hi. i put clippy in saw traps. feel free to request one, even if i've done it already i will redo it with new flair. you can also make up saw traps to put clippy in. CANNOT guarantee it will be accurate.
requests to do: 1 traps in queue: 0
when requesting a trap that is not from a movie/one you made up yourself, please be as in detail as possible if you want accuracy
[ID: An image of Clippy, the paperclip with eyes from Microsoft Office, with a speech bubble saying "It looks like you're trying to navigate this blog via its tagging system. Would you like help?". At the bottom of the speech bubble, there are 2 buttons saying "Get help with navigating by clicking "keep reading"" and "Just try to figure it out solo". /End ID.]

Part II, Day 23
AI and the tools we used to use.
On a regular day back in college, I walked into the computer lab where we worked on all of our electronic media projects. I’m pretty sure it was my Multimedia Authoring class, a semester before they offered DVD Authoring. (I signed up for that, too, but they didn’t get enough interest; I was out of luck on that one.)
One of my classmates had a simple website up on his browser; I saw it over his shoulder: Google. I was nerdy enough to know that it was a number, 10100. But I also learned that it was a search engine that day.
Before that, I was a Yahoo user. That homepage was so cluttered that Google seemed like a breath of fresh air. The tools I used were about to change forever.
In the photo, you’ll see two things that were changed forever by technology, too: a typewriter (obvious) and a corn husker (much less obvious).
The typewriter was my uncle’s, and the husker was a gift from my grandpa, who at one point used it to husk field corn by hand. I’ve used both of them at one point or another, though I personally have more use for the typewriter today.
This week, I spent some time using Chat GPT-4 in preparation for some of my upcoming interviews. It works great for that—collecting background information, parsing job descriptions, even becoming a practice partner for the deeper and more complex hypothetical questions. Keeps me on my toes.
I use it regularly, enough to make the subscription worth it. At one point, you could even find t-shirts I co-created with AI in my short-lived online t-shirt store. (I even registered a tax ID for it.)
I used Google to find out more info about the husker today, and came across a newspaper article from 1969. The journalist spoke with the business owner behind this scary-looking farm relic, Byron Raidt. He was a little salty, because by 1969, no one needed to husk corn by hand. Machines did it, and did it very well. And they had been doing it well for over 20 years.
Mr. Raidt said, "When a man husked corn by hand, he wore out everything from his shoes on up. Now he does it by machine. They call that progress."
He goes on to say, "Now the man that digs ditches wears a white shirt and pushes a button. It hurts business."
Why not bring these things together and ask Chat GPT-4 about the Raidt Make brand corn husker? The first paragraph was fine, giving some context. The next was a disaster, going into detail about a specific eBay auction. The third and final paragraph was okay, too.
We’ve all been chatting about where AI takes us next, especially those of us that work with words and language.
Personally, it’s my thesaurus, my Microsoft Clippy for formatting, my old-fashioned Google for high-level context gathering. It does fine. It’ll get better. And I plan on getting better right along with it.

oh god I haven’t even thought abt the lore. well there’s mecrosoft paper, suitcase, test tube, feathry, and silver spoon but I didnt really have an idea for him so. im saying ss is non canon. and then later we added gray and moon who don’t have designs yet
paper is like clippy and really clingy. I think he’s also a bit of mischievous spyware, just a silly little guy Knowing about you and your computer. despite me drawing suitcase first, paper was the first guy created. paper pops up randomly with his tips n stuff and then disappears of the screen to who knows where lol. he’s differentiated from ii paper in that he almost always has a static smile on his face and also the pink line on him is now black.
suitcase is a wonderful file organizer and works good with storage. like paper, she randomly pops up with tips and tricks about computer tech and fun facts. she usually stays on screen if there’s at least one application open. suitcase ISNT spyware however 🎉. iirc shes abt to be discontinued for a newer os (you can still archive the download site tho). difference from regular suitcase she is a flat fuck and also can float. more expressive than the other guys too!
test tube I havent talked abt too much. most recent product and is also an organizer. as well as helps run applications. they say tt makes the computer run faster but they are 8000% lying. made to replace suitcase and paper on newer operating systems but uhhh glitchy as hell not working >:(. they brought back using these guys as spyware and even adware. horrible. tt always has a clipboard and again mostly a static smiling face. silly idle animations. comes on every os and there’s youtube videos on how to uninstall her /silly
mecrosoft is a shitty company so since tt creates adware, they advertised feathry as an ad remover. and she works!!! mostly!!! theyve still gotta make money n shit so she doesnt work all the way. just enough. shes also a paid subscription so mecrosoft you bitch as. feathry has a green marker but she doesnt even scribble out ads it’s just there for appeal. but if you buy now you get a silly creature on your computer!!!!!!!! please
mecrosoft gray wasn’t really ever supposed to exist tbh lol!! they were trying to make mini helper things for each application but none of the guys ever worked except gray’s and they couldn’t figure out why. the real reason is because well! gray is the reason. fucked up little computer creature demands ten thousand attention forever and started deleting code for the other guys while they were testing. and then they just kinda forgot to take gray off of the os because no one ever uses the calculator tool. gray even buggier than metube because he just always gives the wrong answer or just some non existent unit of measurement. little fucked up thing. sentient creature. invasive species. probably a bad idea. might even give your computer a virus? idk it seems to be quite good at modifying code /silly
lore lore lore: copy of mepaper started bugging out on an old computer and the guy using it was like “hmm this is some really creepypasta shit.” idm if you wanna make that guy OJ ig that’d be cool I never really decided (I think ill just say OJ here to make it easier) but mepaper eventually became sentient and became friends with him. but OJ can’t really do work on it now so he bought another one off of like craigslist or whatever. came installed with mesuitcase. mepaper saw that n was like “what the hell dude.” keep in mind this guy(mepaper) doesnt have a voice so hes just speaking thru text boxes lol. so what mepaper did was fuck up the mecase computer with like some really bad virus but somehow mecase survived that. barely. so OJ was like “fucks sake dude” and ig mepaper felt bad so he tried to apologize. but OJ wouldn’t let them near each other so they kinda just yelled from across the house when he wasn’t home. mecase has a voice btw uh it’s not the best quality but she has it. so they made up and theyre cool now.
I haven’t thought abt anything with metube or mefeathry yet so youll have to wait for that 🎉
#rdl#mecrosoft#sure awesome 🎉#now where have I heard the concept of paper doing silly things on a computer before looks directly at my mutual#/SILLLY#ok maybe I DID think abt the lore /silly

Mysteries Left Unsaid
Something I find intriguing about this show is how light and fluffy it is regarding the nature of AI. It leaves me hungry to know more and speculate over what tantalizingly few details the audience is given. The android detective is played almost exclusively for laughs here, leaving any deeper introspection to the viewer and shows like “Star Trek” (remember “The Measure of a Man”?). You won’t see Yoyo fretting over his status as property aside from his alarm at the notion of being scrapped. One might see deficiency in this, but I find myself enjoying the occasional fall down the rabbit hole asking far too many questions about the weird little world of “Holmes & Yoyo.”
-- Can Yoyo be hypnotized? Is there a point where a robot is so sophisticated and human-like that it’s possible?
-- If Yoyo can absorb data at 150 pages per second (ep 2, “Funny Money”), does his memory ever get full and need cleaning out? How would the doctors know what’s unimportant enough to clean out? Would they back things up in a library? Might they use this memory-taking for nefarious purposes like a cover-up?
Imagine how insanely cool it’d be (in a pre-internet world) if Yoyo could read microfilm! There’s maybe a century’s worth of news just sitting there in a library. Could you imagine H&Y tracking a serial killer’s movements through a series of cold cases based on old newspaper reports? I’d love to see how such a family-friendly show would handle a serial killer. There was already a murder in ep 1, so a case involving murder isn’t off the table.
-- How would programming Yoyo with a childhood (as he requested in ep 4, “The Last Phantom) even work? Would these fictional events merely serve as window dressing to help him maintain his cover, or would they influence his decision-making like real memories do? Would they be anecdotes to tell others over coffee, or would he remember/believe in them as if they actually happened?
-- Yoyo is so strong that when he tried to punch a criminal, he knocked the head off a statue (ep 6, “The Thornhill Affair”). What the hell would’ve happened if he really did punch the criminal? Chunky salsa?? Someone needs to bone up on Asimov’s laws before shit gets real messy! Imagine what a scandal that would be today...😬
-- There are conflicting depictions of whether Yoyo lies or not. In ep 11, “Connection, Connection II” (if my dodgy translation is correct-- I relied on a machine-generated French transcriptions of the dubs and used Google Translate on that), Alex expresses surprise when Yoyo lies to Maxine to cover up the fact that he was hiding in the closet to change his film. Alex says that Yoyo isn’t programmed to lie. Yoyo responds with “I’m going to become a person” and just as quickly as the subject comes up, it’s dropped. Yet in ep 5 (”Yoyo Takes a Bride”), Yoyo easily lies to Maxine when Alex puts him on the spot, saying that she was hallucinating when she saw his panel. So, if people want to write Yoyo in later episodes as being programmed for honesty, then would these childhood events be biographical details from the life of the original Gregory Yoyonovich who created him? Then Yoyo wouldn’t technically be lying, just omitting which Yoyonovich he’s talking about.
-- Did Yoyo really get his start in the bunco squad? It’s probably just a cover story, since he doesn’t seem to know people from the 23rd precinct, where he supposedly transferred from, but I like to think that he really did work there in the form of a helpful computer program, like Microsoft Word’s Clippy back in the day 😆.
-- In ep 7 (”The K-9 Caper”), Yoyo asks Alex what boredom is because he’s not programmed for it. If Yoyo doesn't know what boredom is like, does he understand fun? If he doesn't understand fun, how does he know when to smile? What are the AI equivalents of these emotions? Without the visceral physical experience of emotion (various pains, pressures, tensions, sweat, and pulse), can the psychological aspects hold sway over you?
I imagine that things which obstruct an AI's programming would/could cause something like frustration and things that remove such obstacles and create paths of least resistance could resemble desire. But, does that mean AI's wouldn't experience the desire for challenge? And where would the motivation to avoid repeating your programming come in without pain? Is it enough to just be programmed to avoid or pursue? I think pain is the foundation of emotion and motivation. The tiny optimist in me would prefer to believe that pursuit of pleasure is the foundation, but I believe that avoiding pain is far more important to survival as it helps us evade danger. Why do we desire things? Because not getting them causes pain? The absence of pain could be said to be pleasurable and the absence of pleasure is a kind of pain. Avoiding pain is the main drive, and pleasure is the cherry on top you sometimes get.
That’s what’s sad about H&Y being a forgotten oddity. It captivates me like an old doe-eyed dog in a pound (or like Alex bringing food to the apprehended purse-snatching dog at the end of "K-9 Caper”). It had a lot of potential to grow and I see a lot of potential story in what’s left unexplored. Perhaps that’s why the idea of a robot cop with a human partner has been mined again and again-- it’s a rich vein of ideas.
