Not A Doctor Who confession: given the choice between adopting Young Amelia Pond or Courtney (the kid who was in a few Capaldi episodes) to be your daughter, who would you choose?

THIS IS VERY INTERESTING ON SEVERAL NOTES.

One is that I’m a quarter Scottish (well, a bit over, but my paternal grandfather was the most recent immigrant from that sourcing). I’d understand wee Amelia and know about things she’d need in regards to her home culture. She was an interesting character study as a small child to start based on the fact she was raised in England but kept being Maximum Scottish, which shows how her ability to resist what she found to be unnecessary changes was in place quite early in life. That’s part of why she was able to resist the space-time crack in her wall, but whatever. She’d still get access to Burns Night festivals and fakey Highland Games and Irn Bru and we could learn Scottish Gaelic on Duolingo together.

Two is that my boyfriend is dark-skinned, and adopting Courtney would just kind look normal for us as a couple. We’d, again, know quite a bit about her specific cultural needs (is Courtney descended from Windrush immigrants? Older than that? Both? Neither? I guess we’ll never know) and the fact is we’d be fairly well-equipped to help her out in regards to staying on-track. There wouldn’t be a parent-teacher conference like the one poor Danny had to go through; I mean, she’s gonna be President of the United States of America. She has to stay on-track if she’s gonna be a good one (and hey we’re also Americans so that would help loads, as I think natural-born Americans adopting a foreign-born child makes them eligible to run, though don’t quote me on that considering we still have people whining about a natural-born citizen holding office). I actually think that in a parent-child situation, we’d get on great, if a bit rocky at first.

Three is that both Amelia and Courtney have both their parents in the end and they seem as though they are loving families from what we see of them. I wouldn’t want to edge in on that unless necessary.

Four is that I’m pretty sure Amy would’ve been my grade in school. That’s kinda weird and could cause problems. I wasn’t that into Lisa Frank and Jelly Pens as a kid and I can’t guarantee Amelia wasn’t either. We don’t have wide access to ClipHits and Tomogatchi and Spice World is decades old--issues would arise.

Five is that I’m pretty sure adopting Courtney would look like either I had a kid immediately after high school or that she’s from a potential previous relationship from my boyfriend’s side. That might cause problems as well, mainly in all the questioning.

Six is that there’s time travel involved. I would be very concerned about my child going off in some weird space-time box.

Seven is, well... why not both? They’d get on wonderfully and be best sisters by circumstance. They would cause absolute hell and no one could stop them... except their new mom and dad.
