I would be super fascinated to learn more about how Peglar's views re. If humans get to be people why can't I, affects his relationship with Bridgens - and really just about how they came to be in/navigate through that relationship. Your art is adorable and I love it doubly more so for the amount of care and consideration you have for the inner works of creating a dog/cat boy world. :)

aw thank you this au really is my brain going "crack treated seriously" and somehow making This and im glad other ppl enjoy it too. i have a lot of thoughts on this in terms of how much history to keep and how much to disregard so its under the cut:

so apparently in the book (which i have not read and do not plan to read) bridglar met on the hms beagle and as far as i can tell thats completely made up bc peglar was sailing w the east india company at the time.

then theres the show weirdness of bridgens being like in his 50s/60s when irl bridgens was in his 20s and this makes more sense bc as far as i can tell the position of steward was usually one reserved for younger men so for 50smth bridgens to be jfj's steward is a little odd and esp odd if hes a human in a position that is typically meant for cat/dogboys so my logic for this is that either 1) jfj requested bridgens to be his steward or 2) bridgens requested to be jfj's steward and either option would mean giving bridgens and jfj a slightly closer relationship than what they have in show canon which is fine that just means peglar and bridgens likely met during the first opium war but then how they met is still a mystery bc peglar would be aboard the wanderer with hodgson and bridgens would be on the cornwallis/clio with jfj so like ???

POINT BEING for all the reasons above ive handwaved away exactly how they meet but AT SOME POINT they do meet during the first opium war. peglar was the one who initiated the relationship tho the two of them did have mutual feelings for each other before committing to anything and bridgens is deffo the kinda guy who would go all "i would love you no matter what species you are" and actually mean it and peglar. ok so. i have a lot of thoughts about peglar.

so irl peglar was lashed for drunkeness and mutinous conduct while serving with the east indian company and for catboy peglar i like to imagine that travelling to places where cat/dogboys arent treated the way they are treated in england really opened his eyes and his mind to the idea of being treated like a person and this is obviously not a mindset that human officers want him to have and hence why he was lashed. he then served on the wanderer fighting against the slave trade and thats another chance to see a different type of human-to-cat/dogboy relationship even if he wouldnt have had as many opportunities to live amongst the locals as he did while with the east india company. and peglars like, smart. part of the reason why bridgens falls in love w him is bc of his intelligence and cheek and wit and peglar knows that britiannia's "civilizing mission" is bogus because while they are trying to abolish slavery on one hand they are also actively enforcing Company rule in India on the other and bc peglar has seen both sides of that he has Thoughts about it, Thoughts he didnt dare share with anyone until bridgens coaxed it out of him and to his surprise bridgens agreed with him.

bridgens, being well read and well educated, also knows that the way england treats cat/dogboys is the exception and not the rule and really like cherishes peglar and loves him like truly loves him and is thus completely aware of and careful of their uneven power dynamic here and wouldve never been the first to initiate anything for that very reason. and its not easy to navigate this forbidden relationship but peglar makes it worth it and both of them did worry that maybe this was merely a maritime romance but in the months between the war and the expedition they managed to sneak in lowkey dates on land and found that they were still very much compatible and it really makes things all the more tragic that bridgens cant afford to adopt peglar outright and ensure that henry lives out the rest of his days in peace curled up next to the fire with a good book and smiling whenever he catches john staring at him and god, they are so in love.

hii ari do lorenza and clio change their jobs often throughout ffxiv's story (ik clio wasn't always a gnb (realizing i only remember the gnb part.. favoritism)) and are there any reasons as to when or why they switch? do u imagine them taking inspiration from skills learned in one job and including it in another? (i hope this makes sense!!)

Hello friend!! Thank you so much for this ask!! (You’re so valid =P)

As per usual, this has sent me off on a ramble about the different job and weapon changes and reasons for them throughout the story. So my answer is quite long, but here’s a summary before the rest is under the readmore!

A Realm Reborn: Marauder into Gunbreaker for Clio, Black Mage for Lorenza

Heavensward: Machinist then back to Gunbreaker for Clio, still Black Mage for Lorenza (until “starting Red Mage” sometime post-3.0)

Stormblood: probably just Gunbreaker but gaining Dark Knight skills for Clio, “Red Mage” for Lorenza

Shadowbringers: Dark Knight for Clio, “Glaivethrower” (Dancer but without the dancing) for Lorenza

Endwalker: Reaper-y sort of Gunbreaker for Clio, back to Black Mage for Lorenza (gains custom title of Void Princess post-Endwalker)

Dawntrail: maybe Viper for Clio?, still Black Mage/Void Princess for Lorenza

A Realm Reborn

When Clio first sets out to become an adventurer, she signs up to Limsa Lominsa’s Marauders’ Guild because she already knows how to wield an axe - her dad taught her how to use one quite early on, albeit mostly for cutting down trees. So she technically starts as a marauder. However, when she and Brynblyss and Tsutsuji go with Yda and Papalymo to meet with the sylphs (around the level 20 quests), she ends up coming to the rescue of Radovan and Sophie in the forest. The pair offer to train Clio and Bryn in their respective classes as thanks, and so Clio is given a gunbreaker’s soul crystal and an actual Bozjan gunblade (as opposed to the Garlean style), while Brynblyss gets more experience of healing magic (since he has been using potions before now). As part of this/during this time, Clio acts as the tank for the party, but in more of a Xenoblade Chronicles “evasion tank” style than FFXIV’s “face tank” styles - she doesn’t have the bulkiest armour, but she keeps enemies’ attention on her and then can dodge their attacks thanks to her manifestation of the Echo (which lets her see in-game telegraphs). Since none of the rest of the party fight from melee range due to being casters, it thankfully doesn't matter that she moves around (thus also getting enemies to chase her) a lot!

Lorenza doesn’t come to the Source until the Syrcus Tower raid, but when she does so, she acts as something that best resembles a black mage. Her spells are more powerful and Darkness-imbued than those of a typical thaumaturge, and she draws upon the ample environmental aether of the Source in order to cast them, so it feels the most appropriate thing to call her class, but.. she probably doesn’t have a black mage’s soul crystal, unless I can think of how to get her one. Maybe the Scions had one lying around somehow..?

Heavensward

When the party take refuge in Ishgard, Clio realises that her unconventional fighting style (by Eorzean standards) could be used as a way of identifying her as the Warrior of Light, which isn’t really what she wants in the wake of the bloody banquet. Happily, her older half-brother (whom she wasn’t really aware she had) is part of the Skysteel Manufactory, and provides her with a machinist’s firearm to use instead. It.. works, but Clio finds it harder to hold enemies’ attentions and defend herself from oncoming attacks compared to what she’s used to with a gunblade; it’s clear that fighting from a distance isn’t what she’s comfortable with in an actual battle environment. So she goes back to using her gunblade more when out travelling through Dravania, since no-one's around to potentially recognise her for doing so, and goes back to using it consistently (like she did in ARR) after successfully rescuing Raubahn to clear her name in Eorzea. Additionally, Clio goes through the level 50-60 dark knight quests here, as she had done the 30-50 ones and confronted her darkside in the form of Fray right before Heavensward started, but now she gets to learn more about who Fray was and what dark knights are from Sidurgu. Despite this, she doesn’t really have any need or want to use the skills from the soul crystal. (yet.)

Lorenza continues as a “black mage” until the end of the Dragonsong War, where she then crosses paths with X’rhun Tia at.. some point, and ends up learning swordcraft and starting the red mage questline with him, quite inadvertently (this is mainly because I think the concept of her doing those quests is hilarious 'cause of the voidsent ties). She’s been on the Source for long enough at this point to have built up decent reserves of internal aether, but she does still use environmental aether to augment her spells - so she’s probably more “black mage but casting through a sword now” than an actual true red mage. This is perhaps reflected in the outfit Tataru creates for her after taking her measurements - it’s still very typically robe-like in its overall silhouette, but it still provides better ability for movement and swordfighting than actual robes, so it’s a good middle ground for her!

Stormblood

For this expansion, I’m still a bit on the fence about whether Clio picks up another job again. Monk would make a lot of sense for being so tied to Ala Mhigo, while something like Samurai could be something she picks up in Kugane and might arguably be an interesting parallel to Heavensward (from gunblade, to just gun, to now just blade!). For the moment, though, I have her sticking with being a gunbreaker as before - though she does go through the 60-70 dark knight quests here, where she actually starts to properly know and reconcile with Clover (her Esteem, who replaces canon Myste rather than Fray), so once those are completed she could in theory call upon more of a dark knight’s powers. However, she still doesn’t have any particular need to. (yet.)

Lorenza continues experimenting with casting through a sword instead of a staff, so she’s still somewhere between a black mage and a red mage. She fights very differently to Alisaie despite her also being here, because she’s a lot more of a “proper” red mage by comparison. This includes the two having very different stances - Alisaie’s is the in-game wiggly one with her rapier held out in front of her, whereas Lorenza holds her sword much lower, like how a reaper would hold their scythe. She also rarely actually uses her sword for melee attacks, unless the battleground has forced her to get close to an enemy or vice versa.

Shadowbringers

Clio’s arrival on the First marks a shift, because she now finally fights much more like a typical in-game dark knight, complete with a much larger blade (the Crystarium manatrigger, which looks a lot like a dark knight greatsword despite being a gunbreaker weapon!). She has gained the ability to be more interactive with Clover, and when she learns that to make things better in this world ravaged by Light means becoming a Warrior of Darkness, she starts trying to use these dark skills to help those around her. Additionally, the pure Light she takes on from absorbing the Lightwardens’ aether ends up making her joints very stiff, and in the later stages her skin becomes like plaster - so her usual evasion tank fighting style is no longer something she can do effectively, meaning she needs to be a block tank instead. It’s a bit weird for her to be using darkness, but everything is a bit topsy-turvy like that here in this reflection. This comes to a climax at the Crown of the Immaculate, where her darkside - Clover - essentially sacrifices herself to cancel out the excess Light before Clio turns. This restores her mobility (and also her eye, which got torn out in the final fight against Ran’jit), but essentially means she’s stuck in a permanent Living Dead state, which isn’t ideal due to being a bit too Darkness-heavy than is healthy for an ordinary human. Thankfully, this imbalance is resolved at the Seat of Sacrifice, because that’s where Lorenza enshrouds Clio for the first time, despite the two not sharing a reaper’s pact. Once they defeat Elidibus as the Warrior of Light like this, Lorenza is able to take the excess Darkness with her when she ends the enshroud, restoring Clio to a normal and healthy aetherial state.

In terms of Lorenza herself, she is much weaker than usual during Shadowbringers because of being overwhelmed by how much Light is present on the First. She can’t really use the aether around her to cast spells because it’s so aspected to light it would be toxic for her to channel, and she isn’t physically strong enough to be of much use as a pure swordfighter (nor does she want to be in such close proximity to the sin eaters she’d have to be fighting). Instead, she ends up learning how to use the same style of throwing weapons that Lyna wields, as this would keep her at a better distance from combat and is much less aetherially demanding than casting spells. Lyna feels a bit guilty for not helping Lorenza initially when she and Clio first approached the Crystarium, as she was in such a state to begin with, so she is very willing to help Lorenza with this as a way of making it up to her. Functionally, this fighting style is closest to being a dancer, but it has a very different and duller flavour compared to the typical flashy effects of a dancer in-game. Lorenza continues to fight in this way until after 5.3, since her enshrouding of Clio at the Seat of Sacrifice is what restores her properly back up to her old strength.

Endwalker

Once everyone is finally back from the First, Clio continues to use a gunblade as her weapon, but she starts to fight more like a typical reaper would, including taking on more of a pure DPS role instead of her previous niche as the party’s tank. This is because Brynblyss starts to train as a paladin, because he wants to take a more direct or active role in combat to better help the others, and Azami (Tsutsuji) replaces him as more of the healer/support role, due to still recovering from nearly becoming a Lightwarden at the end of Shadowbringers, which weakened her magic (she essentially goes back to being an arcanist instead of a summoner). Clio is also keen to try and balance the darkness she used on the First as the WoD with the light she is so known for on the Source as the WoL, so.. that’s why she ends up looking like something in the middle of in-game gunbreaker and reaper (though her actual skills would essentially be the ones from dark knight - they’d just have that same blue that the reaper ones do). She ends up receiving a new weapon from Hydaelyn after the Mothercrystal trial - it’s her own version of Venat’s Allegoria, which I represent in-game as the gunblade of divine light =)

Lorenza, on the other hand, returns to her initial style of fighting like a black mage, since she can once again draw upon both the Source’s environmental aether and her own internal aether to cast devastating dark magic on opponents (and, while the sword was nice as a change, she’d realised she’d rather just keep herself out of melee range in the first place). The power of her magic is particularly prominent in the context of Azami’s own volatile elemental spells and summons being dampened down in impact somewhat, as well as the context of having slain and experienced the embodiment of darkness that is Zodiark. The exact weapon Lorenza carries here is the augmented deepshadow scythe, which is a black mage’s staff despite the name - the character most associated with deepshadow gear is Cylva, so I might be able to make something meaningful there, but I’m not sure how yet. The initial intended meaning of it was as a reference to Zero’s reaper scythe/the fact I played through Endwalker as a reaper.. and also so that she has a metal blade on her to use as a more physical weapon on a certain someone after the final duty. During the events of patch 6.5, while fighting Zeromus in the Abyssal Fracture, Zero's scythe breaks - but, because it's specifically the blade part that is broken off, Lorenza then starts using the remainder of it as her new black mage staff, since Zero is able to channel light and fight with a sword and shield again.

Dawntrail

Having not actually played through Dawntrail past the opening few quests yet, whatever I write here has the potential to change with time. However, I think the way I’ve left things off from Endwalker allows the girls to be more consistent, at least - Clio now has a weapon that can change form, so I can just say she uses that for whatever (and then maybe get the appropriate weapon of divine light in-game..), while Lorenza now has a weapon of great personal significance to her, and I can’t envision her changing to use something that isn’t that because of such significance. So Lorenza will stay as a black mage, while Clio might try out viper but I'm not sure. Regarding classes, I think I might go back to everyone filling their initial roles in the party (so Clio as the (off-)tank, Lorenza and Tsutsuji as pure DPS, Brynblyss as the healer) - but I haven't quite decided whether Bryn and Tsutsuji are still travelling around with everyone or if they only pop up for certain story points like the other Scions. I did at least figure out a way to keep Zero and Lorenza in the party, though, so there's that at least!

A few days ago I had a curiosity and I hope I don't make you uncomfortable with my question, regarding Clio's previous relationship with Kai, did they break up? They ended on good terms or how was that situation? greetings!

Hello, thank you for the support :)

Yes, they were even married but the union didn't last longer than two years. While Kai and the others were aging and planning on making a family, Clio couldn't age neither get pregnant. She was not able to give Kai a child and that was the first thing that started to tear them apart. The idea of adoption was not accepted by the Hiwatari's honor lineage and that was placing Kai in a lot of pressure, not to mention that he wanted a kid around the same time as Takao and Rei.

Kai and Clio were still loving each other, caring for each other but there were times when Kai was being over protective with Clio, not letting her Travel when she wanted to visit her friends from other worlds and LOA, making her feel oppressed and sad...to a point the relation started to be toxic.

Clio couldn't take it anymore and confronted Kai. Surprisingly he understood her frustration, they both agree that their marriage was going nowhere. They planned to fake Clio's death because a divorce would make an scandal in the Hiwatari Family. During the "funeral" Kai was truthfully upsed, because even though only him and Clio knew about the act, it was also the end of their love.

It wasn't easy for Clio to deal with the rupture, it took her two years to get over it.

In honor of the new Percy Jackson show (which I'm absolutely loving, and I read the series years ago), and at the prompting of @fantasylover-92, here are the godly parents or species everyone on the crew from The Dragon That Will Pierce Heavens would have/be!

Luffy: Son of Hermes (boy loves traveling and adventure)

Hikari: Daughter of Athena (it takes a goddess of war strategy to keep up with Luffy)

Zoro: Son of Ares (the demonic motif made this irresistible)

Nami: Daughter of Aphrodite (to charm people out of their money, and Aphrodite WAS born out of the sea...)

Usopp: Son of Demeter (green thumb, what can I say?)

Sanji: Son of Apollo (would've preferred Hestia, but at least the flame thing and passion for women is represented here)

Chopper: Satyr (I want him to still be at least somewhat fuzzy, okay?)

Gina: Daughter of Hephaestus (all that building and metalworking? come on!)

Robin: Daughter of Clio (the muse patron of history? fit perfectly!)

Sora: Daughter of Zeus (unfortunate sky connections made this necessary, but she's much nicer)

Franky: Son of Hephaestus (so much building!)

Merry: Daughter of Hades (the ghost aspect of her Glaistig form really inspired this one)

Lily: Daughter of Apollo (also a patron of literature, who knew?)

Julia: Daughter of Poseidon (definitely still drowns people)

Eliza: Daughter of Ares (trust me, that woman has a lot of rage...)

Senkovi's Guide to the Torchwoods: Ruinous Arc

“People leave. Their bodies might be rotten or forgotten. Yet, for those who take their time to look for them, there always remain remnants. Monuments overgrown and houses abandoned are where the memory of them live.” - Clio Chronalectia

I have long had this fascination with the Ruinous Arc at the southern edge of the Torchwoods. Mother used to haggle with the toll collector. He was a large man, whose short legs barely held his body. Gleaming pauldrons reflected the sun, which made his forehead produce a river of sweat that parted at his tweezer-curated unibrow. Back then I thought he was a peculiar man, but years of travel have proven that that’s just what toll collectors look like. While he convinced her to pay the legally required fee, the man shielded himself from my mother’s verbal assault with a worn Code of Law. I, however, marveled at the arc’s limestone statues. They depicted heroes whose names and stories were unknown to me, and the ones I made up were riddled with outdated misconceptions and historical contradictions. The copper lettering across the inner edge of the gate read: "Angel of Rain. Bless us with your gift. Shield us from its ruin."

The architect's plea went unnoticed. I later came upon an article in the Royal Observer, with an aptly drawn illustration. It showed the equally unibrowed master of the toll collection guild amidst a flood. He was hauling a sack of sand toward the arc-adjacent river Rubicon. Unbeknownst to him, an elemental water spirit was closing in with a piece of driftwood and murderous intent. It is extraordinary how the illustrator captured the territorial anger of what is basically just a large drop of water.

When returning to the Torchwood region, I used the same route my mother had taught me was safest. She and I were unaware, that the guild had moved their operation westward. The elemental attack had weakened the arc’s structural integrity to a point, where the toll collector’s union (No. of members: 3) had to step in. Forced to hide behind the fallen statue of one of the limestone heroes, I now spied on a small group of creatures. I dubbed them Curators, after their seemingly innate drive to collect pieces of foreign civilization. Their small heads were each hidden by skulls of various origins, underneath which they communicated in a muffled foreign tongue. Giving each other a boost, they created a fragile living tower along the Ruinous Arc. The topmost of them was the smallest and therefore their leader. Fidgeting with a screwdriver, it one-by-one carefully pocketed the copper letters. It started with the A, which was the only sensible choice, considering that the text began with it. The tower then shuffled over to the B, where one of the lower Curators made a comment. I imagine it was something along the lines of “Pick up the pace.”, to which the top answered something like “Shut it!” The tower then moved a few steps back. Rubbing the chin of its skull helmet, the leader then decided they would move onto a lowercase D and then three separate Es.

Attentive readers will have noticed a pattern by now, but will be disappointed to hear that the Curator’s next choice was an O.

Coming back to the small town where your high school bully leaves to try and escape a killer hunting you down is definitely not the destination vacation Haley had in mind... nor did she expect her high school bully to be a completely changed man hell bent on making amends and proving to her that he's been in love with her since he knew her. Haley escaped her small town of Citrus Cove the moment she turned 18. She couldn't wait to be free of Cameron Harlow, the boy who made her life hell all throughout high school. Now years later she is a successful travel writer, yet she is forced to return to Citrus Cove after all these years because she witnesses her neighbor being murdered and the murderer is now after her. Haley intends to lie low until the killer is caught... but now she is facing Cameron Harlow again. Cameron Harlow is a changed man, he went through therapy, he grew and now he is determined to prove to Haley he isn't the same guy and that he is beyond sorry for everything he put her through. Cameron now owns a bar with his brothers and loves his small town of Citrus Cove, all he's looking for is the one, the one perfect person for him and when the woman he wronged is back in town he wants nothing more than to make it up to her... if she'd even let him near her. Haley needs a job and when she is offered a job at a bar the last person she expects to be her new boss is Cameron. Cameron is determined to prove to Haley he is changed, and the fact that he is falling for her all over again means he'll do just about anything for her. Yet Haley's troubles are coming after her and when residents of the town start getting a body count and Haley begins receiving more threatening texts and photos, she and Cameron will have to find the killer before he kills any chance of the romance growing between Haley and Cameron. Oh I absolutely devoured this book, I'm a sucker for a small town thriller romance and this was everything. The amount of groveling Cameron did for Haley was just perfect, Im someone who does not enjoy bully romances but this one was just perfect. Cameron is so so in love with Haley and would do anything for her. I love that he grew and changed, that he made amends and went above and beyond to prove to Haley he is the perfect guy for her. I adored the Emma and Cameron's brothers as well. I honestly can't wait for the second book and to see where the next couple and story goes!! I couldn't put this book down and I would absolutely recommend it!!! It's hot, it's fun, and it's everything you could want in a read!
