TV, movies, and books; when I was a child always portrayed a boy's life full of neighborhood friends, the main character's crush, and the tree house they would all retreat to when the world got too real. I desperately wanted all of these things. Friends, a crush, and a safe place up in the trees. I never got them. Sure I had a friend or two, I had lots of crushes (that didn't know I existed probably) and I never got a tree house. We moved around a lot. And it was always in the desert, and almost always, the trees were full of thorns. That mixed with 100+ degree weather made it nonconducive for a tree house. They still fascinate me. I think it's that yearning for a safe place to just relax and be a kid and not worry about causing problems or being "good enough". To just, be free to dream. As an adult, I wonder if the notorious "man cave" is something that men do to try and recreate that feeling. But childhood is over isn't it? I think it's good to recognize it's something you don't get a second time. Simultaneity Memoirs #50 "The Arboloth mourned with me for 3 days. I cannot tell you how I know this. It didn't look weepy. It didn't cry. But we were not we, were we? We trust so much in what the eye can see and what the hands can feel, as if those 2 senses could prove or disprove presence. "I buried her in a cold field of dead grass. No humans helped me. I'd killed them to save her, and carried her for 3 days. I didn't even know her name. "But the Arboloth came. It slipped out of the forest and was present with me for those next 3 days. "We were connected, as I said. I was in sorrow, and so I know the Arboloth was too. There was no reason to define or quantify it. That sorrow was it's own entity. Presence, invisible to eye, with no texture to see, but present. You can feel it too can't you. Maybe we give life to our own ghosts and go on haunting ourselves. "The Arboloth have no God. What is a god when you exist without time? When you have no beginning and no end. What is the point in an all powerful being when you will always exist? The Arboloth are their own God. If they had a time-line, they would only be receiving information from a future them, that was past the present. Like memory in a brain pulled forward to be viewed and then tucked away again. "When we mourn death, we mourn the life we have to stop watching or feeling a part of. I believe it's the loss of connection we mourn. We mourn our part in that connection. Almost as if we had ownership of that connection. But it is interesting that those who allow themselves the most empathy have the least trauma in it. There may be sorrow, but it's a confident sorrow. A sorrow of reflection, contemplation. "As night closed in on the 3rd day and the brilliant night light of stars moons galaxies and Aurora lit up the sky, the Arboloth was gone.
