What is the time? Again

We made most use of the overpriced hotel by starting the day with their free breakfast of pumpkin spiced waffles and fruit (real fruit!), And pocketed 2 muffins for later.

We had a walk around Kanab, a random woman came up and said she'd taken a photo of us. After a moment of internal "what's the con" we realised it's just a friendly town thing so gave her the throwaway email account we set up for the trip.

After the walk we headed out of Kanab and drove towards Marble Canyon. What views. The grand staircase overlook was phenomenal, and there were a few other mind-blowing lookouts.

We stopped for Linner at "cliffdwellers" and realised we were too early for check in at the inn were staying (Vermilion Cliffs). We decided to go on 5 miles to see the Navajo Bridge over the Colorado River. It was stunningly beautiful.

We headed back to the inn but was still early (check in/everything opens at 1500) as Utah it was 1530, Arizona 1430 and Navajo territory 1530. We are literally at the border of Navajo territory and just left Utah. Who knows what the time is. There are no clocks or phone signal. So we drove up a little and back down taking in the astounding views.

We're now checked into a cute room in the middle of nowhere. We are hoping for some stars tonight.

Which character you think has changed the most since the story's conception?

Good question! It's a little hard to answer cause a lot of characters have changed a lot in a lot of ways. (sorry for saying "a lot" a lot of times)

So you know what? I'm actually going to make another top whatever number list again, but seriously this time because I can't limit it down to only one :)

Number 5: Frost

Now, he is actually nearly the same as he was in beta hod, except for the fact that in the scrapped sequel arc I had him go through this whole paranoia spiral because his wife got killed by who knows who, and he ends up pushing everyone who's still there away from him.

If I could've found a way to fit something like that into the current version of the story, I would have. But alas, you must sometimes kill your darlings for a story to properly flow.

Number 4: Starlight

Speaking of the guy who killed Frost's wife in that scrapped sequel arc, it was Starlight! He had this whole thing about desperately wanting to reach a position of power after having it denied and snatched away time and time again, to the point where he wants to cause Frost nothing but misery because he thinks Frost unrightfully took away what was his. So he decided to do a little murder here and there like a normal person! :D

Anyway, now he's a guy who primarily serves as someone to further Eclipse and Moonlight's characters. I'm sad to see his whole revenge quest thing go, but it is again what now fits the best.

Number 3: Thrush

I don't think I've really talked about Thrush, and the reason for that is because I'm still deciding what I even want to do with them. Their main role at first was to be an extra in what I called Nightmare's Cult, which is essentially this group of wolves a vengeful spirit gathered together to free him so he could wreak havoc. Because he's petty. Thrush's first name was Sheath because I just liked the sound of it, but I decided to change it to Thistle because that worked better with the name theming. But THEN I changed to Lichen purely because I liked it better, BUT THEN I changed it from that to Thrush when I decided to make them a Cliffdweller instead of Earthbound. That's 4 names they've had, so they definitely hold the record for having their name changed the most. All of that, and all but one of the other characters that were also in the cult have been moved elsewhere or scrapped. So I'm admittedly still a little lost on what exactly to do with them and the other remaining character. But yeah, I find it funny that they got so many name changes when I can only think of like, two other times that happened.

Number 2: Eclipse

Eclipse mainly started off as a sona for myself, and while they're still technically my sona, in hod they've evolved more into being their own character over the years. I don't really know how to give an example of how she's changed, but just trust me when I say she has.

Number 1: Rain

As a character, especially personality wise, she's definitely the one who's changed the most. And could I have just said that from the beginning and not do this list? Yes. But that's boring, so I'm doing it this way cause I love talking about these guys and it's MY blog.

Anyway, Rain's changed a lot personality and design wise. She used to be the "shy and sad girl," something like that, but now she's kinda the group's resident confidant badass who's hiding that she's sad. This plus her early design was way shorter, and had this muted grey blue as her base color. But now her base color is purple! Which, I don't think I've mentioned. But yeah! She's purple because they're magic wolves so I get to do what I want with them 💜

(CAUTION: Long Ass Loredump Ahead)

So, best place to start is probably with the setting itself. There's this single continent with no humans whatsoever, which I've been calling Ashland. (Name is subject to change, but to be honest it'll probably end up sticking like the series title did) And thousands of years ago, before it was known by that name, the continent's apex species where phoenixes, dragons, and gryphons. But, as you probably gathered, a phoenix named Frostburn accidentally caused a mass extinction event, which wiped out all of those creatures. The only surviving life was a little amount of smaller creatures due to how some of them adapted to stay underground to steer clear of the large predators. And yes, this includes our wolves.

Cue a whole bunch of family drama between some wolves, classic post apocalypse survival, and other shit I'm not getting into right now. Besides all of this, something interesting started to happen due to the absence of the Great Beasts. The dragons and phoenixes had five main different elements tied to their different sub species, fire, ice, water, earth, and sky. In ways I haven't fully decided on yet, the surviving wolves were able to harness these elements, and through the centuries, they've developed their own sub species akin to what the dragons and phoenixes had. There were also the griffins, and while it was possible for them to learn to wield elemental magic if they worked for it, they didn't have this magic inside of them. What they did have however, is the magic that let them exist as both avian and mammalian beings. It took longer for the wolves to harness this, but they formed their own sub species as well. (bird wolves my beloved)

These six groups are called the Coldborn, Flameborn, Skybound, Earthbound, Coastdwellers, and Cliffdwellers. There are now many distinguishing factors between these groups, both cultural and physical. I'd go into some, but this is already getting long and I haven't even talked about a single character yet, so we're moving on for now.

Now that I've gone through a crash course of what the world's like, I'm gonna talk about the main characters!

Starting with Eclipse cause she's the closest to being the protagonist, she's a Skybound wolf who at the start of the series, left the Skybound for currently undisclosed reasons. Whatever made her leave seemed to have really shaken her up, and the first section of the story is largely dedicated to getting her on the path to start resolving her issues.

Next is River, who runs into Eclipse one day, and immediately decides his new mission is to befriend her because that's how he is. He's a pretty carefree guy, and at the start of the series he seems to be the most mentally stable. (Which in this series is a VERY impressive achievement)

Next is Rain and Dew, River's older siblings. Rain is River's bio sister from a different litter, and Dew spur of the moment adopted them even though he's only about half a year older than Rain. Rain has a pretty similar attitude to River, if only a bit more subdued. Dew is The Ultimate Big Bro to sum it up.

Now Frost! Best I can describe him is that he's a very cocky himbo, but that's mainly the front he puts up to hide his insecurities. He's a character who gets explored a lot more later in the series, so I'm gonna leave it there for now.

Last I'll do for now is Ember. He's a short and scrawny Flameborn wolf who is pretty stone-faced a lot of the time, he's also begrudgingly friends with Frost. He's Edgy Mcgee and I love him for it. He's also being tortured by a demon, but I digress.
