freddiewatts:
Stung by Iann’s apparent belief that he was triumphantly mired in his own love-blinded opinions and thus incapable of a revision of viewpoint, or any sort of balanced appraisal, Freddie just gave a small smile and nod to his partner’s rationale for this new emotional evolution, and gratefully turned the corner onto the next subject, Ollie coming over to sit beside him.
And he listened as Iann shared what he’d been able to glean from St. Pierre already - preening braggadocio being a brilliantly exploitable quality in a mark - nodding his head a second time. “Galas are like fundraisers, yeah,” he said, “And if Toddry’s reinvented herself as a philanthropist - or if she’s in the process of doing so - then there’ll be whispers to that effect making their way through town. Through my end of town specifically.” Freddie gave another small smile. “So I’ll do a bit of inquiring and see what I can turn up, yeah?”
“How long does St. Pierre intend to be with us though?” the fairy asked, still just thinking out loud, “And how susceptible does he seem to flattery?” A thought occurred to him then, and Freddie paused, his train of thought temporarily switching tracks. “Actually, never mind that for the moment. I’ve a better question.”
Finally remembering he was drinking a beer, Freddie lifted his glass to his lips, meeting Iann’s eyes over the rim. “What is he, darling? Do you know? Is he another of Suky’s witches, or does he predate our Toddry’s having a ‘type’?”
“I’d just like to know if he can rumble me as a fairy before I approach him. I mean, Toddry’s not stupid, and if she’s coming back here, she’ll have to know I’ve a bit of a bone to pick.” The fairy took another sip of his drink, lips quirking into a wry sort of smile. “I wonder if she’s been talking to Martin,” he mused, “And if she has, I wonder what he’s said…”
“Mm. Y’know, I’ll bet you that she’s making a big to-do about how she’s ‘changed her ways’ and all that. You know how those business-minded people do. Like Pepsi Clear - they introduce some all-new marketing scheme, and then when people hate it they go back to the Pepsi Classic and everyone cheers...” Iann nibbled on his nail, leaning sideways on the couch so he looked upwards at Freddie.
“It’s a cleverploy, but not one that just anyone could pull off. Our dear Pepsi Toddry though? Frankly, I gotta say this whole philanthropy schtick could work on her, after what she’d been through.”
He nodded - because if anyone would pick up news of Toddry’s eventual arrival and her ‘new leaf’ re-branding, it would be Freddie.
“Oh - he’s staying at our Inn until Toddry arrives, is my guess. Maybe he’ll be checking out beforehand to make preparations at that villa she uses, though? What with the renovations and all,” Iann noted, since both him and Freddie had both individually noted renovations made and completed to the villa during the summer.
“I think his check-out date’s a month from now. I believe her gala is planned for December, probably to coincide with some sort of winter solstice thing. Which - the solstices are big fooferahs for faefolk, isn’t it? Or like the Otherworld?” Iann vaguely remembered hearing about it, but he wasn’t quite sure. Faefolk tended to guard their festivities unless of course said festivities involved capturing mortals to their Otherworld plane.
The flattery question went unanswered (Iann would’ve guessed yes though - what entourage member didn’t enjoy being plastered with praise?) but Freddie’s new question had an even more guesswork answer. Iann gave a shrug. “I wish I found out, but...honestly I think he mentioned that he was a vampire.”
Iann paused for a moment, and then said, “If he is a vampire, then I think he’s fairly young, like maybe a couple decades old. Because he had that sort of insecure haughtiness, if you know what I mean...” Iann grinned. “That babyvamp vibe.” But the reason Iann paused, was because he had another thought about St Pierre’s species.
“Say, do you think - after the whole Adjaye thing - that Toddry’s switched it up? Started collecting vampires for her minions. As sort of an...I dunno. A fuck you and all that. A petty ‘fuck you’ but y’know, sometimes petty feels good.” And although Iann felt Toddry had this coming to her, he still felt she was the lesser of two weevils when matched up against Martin Adjaye.
