Help support Gosling! I see lots of horse memes tumbling around, and if some of equestrian tumblr and equestrian peanut gallery tumblr (affectionate) can give her a hand, or at least pass it into other horse spheres of the internet, I'd appreciate it.

Gosling was born June 19th, 2023, a month earlier than she should've been. She was lively but unable to stand, with no suckling reflex. She had a small seroma on her chest, an umbilical hernia, and her legs were contracted. Though two vets came and a feeding tube was placed in her nose to give her colostrum, within hours she was dehydrated and weak. She was rushed to the Marian Dupont-Scott Equine Hospital in Leesburg, Virginia. Being premature, her digestive system couldn’t handle the colostrum and she developed pneumonia. She was kept for a week on IV antibiotics, tube fed, helped to stand, and taught how to nurse. When she came home, she could (with help) stand for a few hours a day and gradually grew more lively, but continued to have high fevers and required antibiotics three times a day. The seroma on her chest continued to grow, until there was concern it might split her skin. A homemade compression vest was made, antibiotics were switched multiple times, and blood was repeatedly drawn, but the seroma never shrank and no clear cause was discovered. At six weeks old, Gosling and her mother returned to the hospital to determine what to do about the seroma, since the usual treatments of compression and time were not effective. The doctors decided that in this case, the best course of action was to put off the umbilical hernia surgery, and lance and drain the seroma. On August 9th, 2.25 litres of fluid was drained from Gosling’s chest. The first week of care for Gosling’s life at the hospital cost 15,000 dollars. Veterinary care at home has cost almost 5,000 dollars since. We have not yet been given the bill for Gosling’s second stay at the hospital (where she remains as of this writing.) The financial burden is tremendous. Please help us care for Gosling through this difficult start. Information: Gosling is a purebred Cleveland bay filly. Cleveland Bays are a critically endangered breed of horse with approximately 1,000 purebreds in the world. Only about 15 foals are born each year, not enough to maintain current numbers. Because of this, fillies are incredibly precious to the future of the breed.

NEW BOARDER

We just got a new boarder. The Bruun family, consisting of Asta Bruun her wife Sarah and their daughter Ellie, with horses PRF Patches and Old Man.

Today young Ellie got to ride a little on Patches, both by herself with mom Asta's help and with Asta. Looks like they had fun! Asta also trained him a little, while her wife Sarah held Ellie to watch her riding.

WINTERTIME AND NEW SMELLS

The other day the new owner of Bad Romance's (hanoverian mare) horse transporter had arrived and collected the mare, so she could go to her new home at Laura Graff.

Soon the new owner of Mist aka. Misty (the rescue mustang) will be collecting her. She is ready to go as soon as the money from the new owner Kyla Hunt ticks in. We know she will get a good home with Kyla that much is sure!

These days we haven't been that active as the only horse in training has been lame, but he is getting back to good health again now, and we will hopefully soon be able to start the training with him. Or so we hope.

It has been snowing all day here in this part of Denmark, and I had to put a blanket on Old Man, so he would actually exit the indoor area and go outside.

After the blanket he is chilling beside Patches, apparently enjoying the heat and comfort the blanket gives him. He has also become a good friend of Patches, and let the calm gelding quite close to him. Much closer than any other horse would be allowed to get. And much closer than both Sarah and I can get to him too.

The lanky warmblood boys (Patches doesn't count, he loves the cold, and suffers in the heat if not trimmed) wanted to go inside around midday, even if they got their blankets on. I might have to give them some warmer blankets soon, because they are apparently freezing more than even Old Man xD

DON'T YOU THINK...

"Don't you think we should invest in an indoor arena at some point?" My clever daughter Calypso pointed out.

"Sure, but it will take more than the winter season to build it, and it will be hard to build, when the earth is frozen," I said with a shrug, and kept on brushing Saffy (BOE Saffron). She seemed to enjoy the warm barn and not having to wear the blanket.

"Then why don't we rent or loan one of the indoor arenas nearby?" Calypso questioned, seeming so sure that that was the perfect plan.

"You can't just rent something. You gotta talk to the people first, make plans and all that," I replied, my back towards her.

"Oh," she kinda sulked and seemed to get that it wasn't that easy.

"Yes 'oh'. Maybe our neighbors don't want us in their arenas. Maybe they are using them themselves, or maybe they have already rented them out," I explained to her, as I turned around to look at her, "So you are going to ride outside today."

Calypso brought the mare outside. She would be the one riding Saffy from now on, as the mare was slightly more experienced than Smarties (BOE Smarties). I would be writing the stallion, but today he had a break day.

"Give her reins, Calypso. You are warming up! This is not a frisky show jumper, this is a calm mare who does her best!" I told her as she rode Saffy around the outdoor arena. The snow was not that deep yet, still it was annoying. I would like an indoor arena too, I thought as I blew into my cold hands and wished I had put on gloves.

"I am giving her reins!" she replied stubbornly, and gave the mare slightly more rein.

"You are to support her decision to trot correctly, not hold the whole weight of her head. She had to hold that herself!" I corrected her.

Calypso just nodded, probably annoyed with me. But then again, who would like having your own mother as instructor? If I wanted her to get better, I would have to find an intructor somewhere, and employ them at my stable. That would do all my children, including my wife, some good.

"And now: Canter!" I yelled to my daughter. It was hard to hear anything because of the snow and how thickly it fell around us.

Instead of answering Calypso just put her helpers to the mare's sides and told her with them that she should jump into canter. Saffy did so very well.

"Good job!" I tried to praise every little thing she did correctly, so she wouldn't give up, because I was too stern.

When the lesson ended I asked Calypso to cool the mare down by taking a ride around the pastures. At the first pasture we met Smarties, who was very interested in Saffy it seemed. Stallions are just like that around mares sometimes.

"Look at Smarties!" Calypso laughed, as the stallion seemed to follow us from the other side of the fence.

"Silly boy," I laughed back, and patted Saffy's neck, before looking at the snow in front of me.

"We really should get an indoor arena. I'm freezing!" Calypso protested and let go of the reins for a few seconds to rub her palms against each other.

"And you really should learn to put on glows, when it's this cold," I replied, winking at her. That just made her stick out her tongue.

"So should you," she caught a snowflake with her tongue, and grabbed onto the reins again to lead the mare back to the stables.

Just a little show jumping with Patches

These days the weather is horrible. It's light outside still, but the rain came down stronger and stronger as I trained my boy Patches in some jumping. He is clearly a good jumper, and we soon need to make the jumps higher. My goal is entering a show jumping competition with him before the end for the year. It's going to be so much fun.

Patches is a special boy, and the horse that made me want to create this rescue farm. He is a Cleveland Bay gelding at the age of 15 years old. He is a lovely boy, so sweet and gentle, though he only trusts me and my family. I'm the only one who can ride him, as he will throw off everyone else.

The rain became heavier as we cantered around the arena. He was so good today. All calm and collected, which is impressive for him, as he can be a little skittish. Also he does not like the rain.

He really tries his best though, but it was clear at the end of the training that he was done with the rain.

So I took him inside for a rubdown. He enjoyed that very much. Even if people say he looks like a buckskin, his genetest says he is bay. Light bay. Very light. He is just the best horse I could wish for, and I would exchange him for anyone.

Finally I said goodbye to him for now, and went on with my day of training the other horses. After all he is not the only horse in the barn, even if he is the only one who has my heart completely
