How is Cleft Rhinoplasty Treated?
Patients with cleft lip and cleft palate can reshape their noses through cleft rhinoplasty surgery. Several babies take birth with this cleft deformity which affects their feeding, speaking, breathing, etc., patterns. Patients with cleft lips can opt for rhinoplasty surgery to add aesthetics to their face and easy breathing flow.
Scroll down for a brief overview of the surgical procedure!
Surgical Procedure of Cleft Rhinoplasty
The previous surgical scars present on your nose make cleft rhinoplasty a complicated procedure. Thus, surgeons use the following two methods of cleft rhinoplasty depending on the complications and conditions:
Primary Cleft Rhinoplasty
This cleft rhinoplasty surgery is performed under local anesthesia to repair the cleft lip at an initial stage. Then, surgeons generally perform bone and cartilage grafting to reform the cleft lip caused due to tissue deficiency. Closing the nasal floor helps provide you with a symmetrical and even nose. Moreover, it will improve the function and aesthetics of your nose and face.
Secondary Cleft Rhinoplasty
It is among the most complicated surgery for cleft lip; thus, patients are kept under general anesthesia to reduce the pain and discomfort. The secondary surgery is done in an open procedure. At first, the surgeon makes an incision in the columella and then folds the nasal tip upward to open the nose.
The surgeon may use different techniques to reshape your nose as per the strength and position of the cartilage. However, choosing the suitable graft material is essential to properly conduct the cleft rhinoplasty surgery. In addition, it helps change the nose shape and improve your breathing.
The secondary surgery requires more grafting as the skin and tissues get stiff due to previous surgeries. For more complex cases, surgeons may perform septoplasty to reshape the deformed septum obstructing your nasal passage.
Bottom LineCleft rhinoplasty surgery does not keep you admitted to the hospital as it is an outpatient procedure. You can leave the clinic just after the anesthesia effect is over. Moreover, patients with cleft lips can improve their breathing with this surgical procedure. Surgeons use cartilage from your nasal septum and ear to straighten your nasal shape.

How can plastic surgery be done?ChatGPT
Plastic surgery refers to a wide range of surgical procedures that aim to reconstruct or enhance various aspects of the body. Plastic surgery can be divided into two main categories: reconstructive surgery and cosmetic surgery.
1. Reconstructive surgery: Reconstructive surgery focuses on repairing or rebuilding body structures that are damaged, congenital (present at birth), or affected by trauma or medical conditions. Some common reconstructive procedures include:
Breast reconstruction: Restoring the breast(s) after mastectomy or injury.
Cleft lip and palate repair: Correcting birth defects affecting the lip and/or roof of the mouth.
Scar revision: Improving the appearance of scars caused by injury, surgery, or burns.
Skin grafting: Transferring healthy skin from one part of the body to replace damaged or lost skin.
Burn reconstruction: Restoring functionality and aesthetics after burn injuries.
Hand surgery: Treating conditions like carpal tunnel syndrome or repairing hand injuries.
2. Cosmetic surgery: Cosmetic surgery aims to improve or enhance a person's appearance, typically by altering or reshaping specific features of the body. Some common cosmetic procedures include:
Breast augmentation: Enhancing breast size and shape using implants or fat transfer.
Rhinoplasty: Reshaping the nose to improve its appearance or function.
Facelift: Reducing sagging and wrinkles on the face and neck.
Liposuction: Removing excess fat deposits to improve body contours.
Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck): Tightening the abdominal muscles and removing excess skin and fat from the abdomen.
Blepharoplasty: Correcting droopy eyelids or removing excess skin and fat around the eyes.
The process of plastic surgery typically involves the following steps:
Consultation: You will meet with a plastic surgeon to discuss your concerns, goals, and medical history. The surgeon will evaluate your condition, explain the available options, and recommend the most suitable procedures for you.
Pre-operative preparation: If you decide to proceed with surgery, you will go through pre-operative preparations, which may include medical tests, taking medications as instructed, and avoiding certain substances like tobacco and certain medications that can interfere with healing.
Surgery: On the day of surgery, you will undergo the chosen procedure under anesthesia. The specific techniques and duration of the surgery will vary depending on the procedure and the individual case.
Recovery: After surgery, you will be closely monitored during the initial recovery phase. The length and intensity of the recovery period depend on the procedure performed. Your surgeon will provide post-operative instructions regarding wound care, medication, activity restrictions, and follow-up appointments.
Follow-up care: Regular follow-up visits will be scheduled to monitor your healing progress and address any concerns or complications that may arise. Your surgeon will guide you through the recovery process and advise you on when you can resume normal activities.
It's crucial to choose a board-certified plastic surgeon with extensive experience in the specific procedure you are considering. Plastic surgery carries risks and potential complications, so thorough research, realistic expectations, and open communication with your surgeon are essential for a successful outcome.

ID from ALT :
First slide. top right reads: There are many types of cleft lip. unilateral (on one side), bilateral (on both sides), and complete (self-explanatory), incomplete (self-explanatory), and post-surgery (there is no cleft), no-surgery (there is a cleft). next to it is a photo of Joaquin Phoenix with no facial hair captioned "Joaquin Phoenix has it BTW (unilateral + incomplete)". below that are four drawings captioned "Examples". They're all the same bust sketches but with different mouths and noses. The first one is Unilateral + complete (post surgery). Text box reads "teeth can sometimes be slighly visible, scar present, tip of the nose points downward, if they had surgery you won't be able to tell half the time if you aren't looking for it, easier to tell from the nose than the lip/scar TBH". Next to it is one captioned "unilateral + complete (no surgery). Text reads: "teeth are visible, upper row of teeth goes with the shape of the lip, tip of the nose points other direction". Third one is "bilateral + complete (no surgery). Text reads: "two front teeth visible but they go to the sides, upper lip split into 3 parts: one attached to the columella and two to the outer nostrils, nose and nostrils are wider". the last one is "unilateral + incomplete (no surgery)". text reads: "teeth can sometimes be visible but mostly no, nose can sometimes be flatter + wider on the side of the cleft, doesn't go into the nostril."
Second slide. the title reads "Drawing a character with cleft lip post lip surgery". the caption reads "some people also get rhinoplasty (nose surgery) but I won't go into it because it just gives you a "regular" nose and I don't think this needs a tutorial IDK". Below that are three drawings from the neck up. First one is of a woman with a faded cleft lip captioned "it's not always very visible". Second is of a Latino man with a gap in his moustache and slightly visible teeth, captioned "teeth can show". Third is of a Black woman with a large keloid scar, captioned "keloid scars sometimes happen". under those is a section called "what it can look like" with "can" in all caps and underscored. text reads: "cupid bow higher on the side of the cleft, nostril lower on the side of the cleft, actual scar, pulling from the scar creating a small opening right below it, nose pointing downwards and/or towards the scar". the drawing next to it has all these differences highlighted. note below it reads "if it's bilateral: the lip and nostrils can still be asymmetrical, the lips would probably be parted in the middle if at all". the last drawing at the bottom shows a person from the side-view and highlights the nose and lips. Text reads: "from the profile, the upper lip pokes out less". a note in the bottom right reads: "note: the scar is surgical. in most cases, it will be poorly visible, and in adults, faded. in some people it's honestly invisible, but it can also be reddish or paler than the rest of the skin. facial hair doesn't grow on scar tissue no matter how visible the scar is."
Third slide. it's the same as the previous one, but for characters with no surgery. the three drawings show a Black man with an incomplete cleft lip showing his teeth, a white woman with a complete cleft, and a Black girl with a bilateral complete one. the section below shows a person with a bilateral cleft from the side, as well as a close-up on the mouth itself. text reads: "the middle part protrudes further than the nose (generally), nose and middle part are on a similar angle, when the mouth is closed the upper lip goes into the lower one". a note under the drawing reads "(the mouth here is slightly open to see everything from the side)". a text box under both drawings reads "incisors can be more hidden or visible (same with gums) and they can be straight or go to the sides. the actual lip is usually invisible on the middle part because it's often on the more inner side. it can look like the profile above but it's not as common". a section next to that one shows a person with an unilateral cleft lip and misaligned teeth on a 3/4 angle. text box reads: "upper teeth go towards the nostril with the cleft" and "the higher the cleft the more they will do that. compare the chara in top left vs the one above this text box."
Fourth slide. it's titled "ok but what else". below that are two busts, one of a person without a cleft lip and the second of a person with a repaired cleft but no visible scar. caption reads "how to draw the subtle differences". text continues "distance between nose and upper lip is shorter, nose more down turned (can be much more than I drew TBH), lip pulls upward below where the cleft was. This way it's still visible even when there's no easy-to-see scar." the two drawings have all these differences color-coded. section below features the same drawings, but this time they show a character with a complete unilateral no-surgery cleft. first one shows the skeleton underneath, second has skin on. text reads "in a no-surgery uni complete cleft lip, think of the rows of teeth not as two horizontal rows but more of a triangle. the upper teeth are parted into 2 sections and they don't meet, but can overlap in the actual cleft spot. they don't go into the nostril BTW." a small note reads "gums are dark red and teeth are blue so you can tell which is which" and the drawing is color coded accordingly.
Fifth slide, titled "the chibis the cartoons etc." with a header "(by someone who doesn't really draw in that style I'll do my best though). it shows two chibi drawings - one of a girl with a bilateral no-surgery cleft lip, second of a girl with a unilateral post-surgery one. they each have instructions below. for the first one, it shows a horizontal 3 with an additional bump, captioned "you can do this shape (it's kinda nose shaped?", next step draws two squares to the middle part, captioned "add teeth to the middle part, boom no nose needed." second drawing has its first instruction as "draw a basic smile, don't bother with subtle differences TBH just simpify it", followed by "draw an anime girl fang upside down, remember that the lip follows the shape. you can throw in a scar too."
Sixth slide, titled "other types of clefts + things to consider for the character". it features two drawings: one of an East Asian woman with a cleft going from her lower eyelid to the corner of her mouth, and second of a South Asian woman in a headscarf with an indent in the middle of her eyebrow. she also has strabismus and her cleft eyebrow is very wide. they're captioned with cleft type 5 and 10 respectively. a text box reads "these are called Tessier clefts and they're like cleft lips but on different parts of the face. There's 14 of them in total and they can be comorbid with cleft lip and palate." the last section has no drawings and just a text box titled "info that you might find useful: most people with cleft lip worldwide didn't have surgery, most people in wealthy countries get surgery as babies, some people choose to get cosmetic revisions rhinoplasties etc. when they're older (most don't), first cleft lip surgery was in 390 BC, most people with a cleft lip have a cleft palate as well, don't call it a fucking 'hare lip' it's offensive and weird".

Your Guide to Plastic Surgery: Finding the Right Surgeon and Procedure
Plastic surgery can be transformative, helping people achieve aesthetic goals, correct physical issues, and enhance self-confidence. However, successful outcomes hinge on finding the right professional and choosing the appropriate procedure. This guide delves into what you need to know to make informed decisions, focusing on how to select the best plastic surgeon and navigate the surgery process to ensure safe and satisfying results.
Why Choosing the Best Plastic Surgeon Matters
Selecting the best plastic surgeon is crucial for achieving results that look natural, align with your goals, and minimize risks. A skilled plastic surgeon brings not only technical expertise but also an artistic eye and a deep understanding of anatomy, ensuring your features are enhanced in a balanced, aesthetically pleasing way.
It's important to choose a surgeon who is certified by a recognized board, such as the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS), which ensures they have undergone rigorous training. Experienced surgeons also typically have an extensive portfolio of their work and testimonials from previous clients, helping you gauge their expertise and bedside manner. Remember, the best plastic surgeon for one person may not be the best for another—so finding someone you feel comfortable with and can trust is paramount.
Understanding Types of Plastic Surgery
Plastic surgery can be broken down into two main categories: cosmetic and reconstructive surgery. Knowing the differences between them will help you identify the type of surgery you may need.
Cosmetic Surgery: This category focuses on enhancing a person’s appearance through elective procedures. Popular options include facelift, rhinoplasty (nose job), liposuction, breast augmentation, and tummy tuck. Each procedure is designed to target specific aesthetic concerns and often involves nuanced techniques tailored to the individual’s goals and body type.
Reconstructive Surgery: This form of plastic surgery is usually performed to restore function or correct deformities caused by trauma, disease, or congenital abnormalities. Common reconstructive procedures include breast reconstruction after mastectomy, cleft palate repair, and scar revision. This type of surgery typically requires advanced technical skills and a specialized approach to ensure both form and function are restored.
How to Choose the Right Plastic Surgeon
To identify the best plastic surgeon for your needs, consider these key factors:
1. Board Certification and Credentials
The most critical qualification for any plastic surgeon is board certification. A certified surgeon has completed rigorous training, practical exams, and ongoing education to ensure they stay updated on best practices and new technologies. Check your surgeon’s credentials through reputable boards like the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) or the ABPS.
2. Experience and Specialization
Plastic surgery is a broad field, and surgeons often specialize in particular procedures. For instance, some may be experts in facial reconstruction, while others focus on breast augmentation or liposuction. Look for a plastic surgeon who regularly performs the specific procedure you want, as this can significantly impact your results and safety.
3. Before-and-After Photos
Reviewing a surgeon’s portfolio allows you to assess their work and see examples of past surgeries. Many plastic surgeons have galleries on their websites showcasing their results. Compare these photos with your own goals to see if their aesthetic aligns with yours.
4. Patient Reviews and Testimonials
Patient feedback is a valuable source of insight. Online reviews can provide a sense of the plastic surgeon's professionalism, bedside manner, and overall satisfaction rates. While a single negative review isn’t always a red flag, consistently poor feedback should be a cause for caution.
5. Consultation and Communication
A thorough consultation is essential for a positive surgery experience. During your consultation, the plastic surgeon should listen to your goals, answer all questions, and discuss any risks. Their ability to communicate clearly and realistically about expected outcomes is a sign of a trustworthy professional.
Preparing for Plastic Surgery
Once you've found the best plastic surgeon for your needs, preparation becomes your next priority. Here are steps to help you get ready:
Discuss Your Medical History: Be open about any medical conditions, allergies, or past surgeries. This information allows your plastic surgeon to plan for any risks and customize the procedure to suit your health profile.
Understand the Risks and Recovery Process: Every surgery comes with potential risks, such as infection, scarring, or anesthesia reactions. Discuss these risks with your plastic surgeon and understand what the recovery process will entail, including any restrictions on physical activity, diet, or wound care.
Set Realistic Expectations: Plastic surgery can be transformative, but it has limitations. The best plastic surgeons emphasize realistic goals and avoid over-promising results. Ensuring your expectations align with what is achievable can prevent disappointment and help you feel satisfied with your results.
Plan for Recovery: Depending on the type of surgery, you may need a few days to several weeks for a complete recovery. Organize your schedule accordingly, arrange for any needed help, and set up a comfortable recovery space at home.
Common Questions About Plastic Surgery
Q: How much does plastic surgery cost? Costs can vary significantly depending on the plastic surgeon, procedure complexity, and geographic location. Cosmetic surgeries are generally not covered by insurance, whereas reconstructive surgeries may be partially or fully covered if deemed medically necessary.
Q: How long do results last? Results vary depending on the surgery type and individual factors, such as skin elasticity and lifestyle. Some procedures, like facelifts, provide long-lasting but not permanent results, while others, like liposuction, can offer enduring changes if a healthy lifestyle is maintained.
Q: What should I expect during recovery? Recovery experiences vary, but common symptoms include swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort. Your plastic surgeon will provide post-operative care instructions, including medication, activity restrictions, and follow-up appointments.
Final Thoughts Choosing the best plastic surgeon and understanding the surgery process are pivotal to a successful outcome. The right plastic surgeon will prioritize safety, have extensive experience, and work collaboratively to bring your vision to life. With careful planning and clear communication, plastic surgery can help you achieve your goals and improve your quality of life, whether you’re interested in aesthetic enhancement or functional repair. Approach the journey with a well-informed perspective, prioritize your well-being, and trust the process.

Plastic Surgery's Chokehold on Social Media
You may have heard of plastic surgery before, but do you know what it is? The term comes from the Greek word “plastike” which is the art of modeling and sculpting. Plastic surgery refers to cosmetic and reconstructive procedures done for health and cosmetic reasons. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, “plastic surgeons treat pathologies that range from congenital anomalies to cancer, trauma and degenerative conditions.” This is not to be confused with cosmetic surgery. Plastic surgery training involves a broad scope of procedures to restore the body’s normal appearance and function, whereas cosmetic surgery training focuses exclusively on aesthetic procedures. Procedures can either be invasive or noninvasive, which refers to whether or not a surgery requires the breaking of the skin or the insertion of medical instruments into the body. Some examples of invasive procedures include facelifts, fat reductions, breast augmentations, and rhinoplasty. Non-invasive or minimally invasive procedures can include fillers, injections, chemical peels, laser hair removal, and tattoo removal. Unlike cosmetic procedures, reconstructive surgery can repair parts of the body affected by defects you were born with, defects that have developed due to disease, or defects caused by an injury. Some examples of reconstructive surgery include burn facial reconstruction, jaw reconstruction, breast reduction/reconstruction, cleft lip and palate repair, and septoplasty.
Although all of these procedures can be beneficial physically and/or mentally, some consequences follow. One of these consequences is the effects it can have on individuals who are exposed to it through online platforms like Instagram. Social media has had a profound impact on the world of plastic surgery and has served as a global influence on the cosmetic surgery market. One study showed that viewing images of females who have undergone cosmetic enhancements affected young women’s desire for cosmetic surgery, especially if they spent a significant amount of time on social media, followed many accounts, and were less satisfied with their appearance. Another study found that time spent on social media and the usage of apps to edit photos correlated with an individual’s desire to undergo cosmetic procedures. Both of these studies allow us to understand the effects that social media has on how an individual views themself and how cosmetic procedures being promoted on social media platforms can encourage someone to get procedures done to look like the unrealistic people they see online.
Celebrities and influencers on social media have had a profound impact on society’s idea of beauty. Although the standards of beauty have changed over time, social media has encouraged its users to get some type of plastic surgery. Many celebrities and influencers have denied having cosmetic procedures done, tricking their audiences into believing that their bodies are natural. Without honesty, there is no transparency, and lack of transparency can create false ideals and standards.
So, why is this relevant? The truth of the matter is, this topic is not important to all individuals, but it can raise cause for concern. A father with a prepubescent daughter may not care about the perpetuation of plastic surgery on social media. However, his daughter is being exposed to this content on her Instagram account. She finds influencers and celebrities who align with her interests, such as doing makeup, painting her nails, and playing a sport. Instagram recommends more accounts to her and she follows them. As she is exposed to more and more accounts, she comes across more individuals who have had cosmetic procedures done and do not disclose. So, she believes the women she is seeing are real, unedited, natural women. She starts to wonder why she doesn’t look like them. She questions how she can achieve their level of beauty, and asks her dad how to look like the girl she follows on Instagram. Her father, confused about how to answer her question, listens to his young daughter talking about a desire to look like other women. Although this topic may not have been something of importance to the father before, it is now, now that his daughter is experiencing insecurities as a result of social media standards.
Even disregarding the harmful effects these standards can have on individuals’ self-perceptions, the glorification of plastic surgery has also resulted in individuals seeking procedures that fit their budgets. These low-cost surgeries are typically done by individuals not qualified to perform these procedures, resulting in patients becoming permanently botched, injured, or killed.
To make a positive change in his phenomenon, individuals must understand that the media they consume online can always be twisted and manipulated to suit a certain audience. This comes with individuals developing digital media literacy, which can greatly benefit people on social media and other online platforms. Here’s a detailed overview of what plastic surgeons do, their training, and the types of procedures they perform.
Areas of Specialization

Cleft Lip and Palate Repair: Correcting congenital facial deformities.

Medical School: A four-year program leading to an MD (Doctor of Medicine) or DO (Doctor of Osteopathy) degree.
Residency Training: After medical school, aspiring plastic surgeons typically complete a residency in general surgery, lasting about 5 years. This is followed by a specialized residency in plastic surgery, which can range from 2 to 3 years.

Post-Operative Care: Monitoring recovery and managing any complications that may occur after surgery.

Facial Implant Surgery in the USA: Enhancing Facial Contours
Facial implant surgery has grown in popularity across the USA as a means to enhance and define facial features, improve symmetry, and boost self-confidence. These implants are designed to augment or reconstruct facial contours, often targeting areas like the cheeks, chin, or jawline.
For those seeking a more harmonious facial appearance, facial implants offer a long-lasting solution that helps to address issues like underdeveloped facial structures or age-related volume loss. The procedure is relatively safe, with advancements in surgical techniques leading to quicker recovery times. Facial Implant Surgery in USA continues to evolve, with surgeons utilizing both silicone and porous polyethylene implants to achieve natural-looking results.
Reconstructive Plastic Surgery: Restoring Function and Aesthetics
Reconstructive plastic surgery is a critical field aimed at repairing and restoring both the function and appearance of body parts affected by trauma, disease, or congenital anomalies. Unlike cosmetic procedures that focus solely on aesthetics, reconstructive plastic surgery serves a dual purpose.
Patients who have suffered injuries from accidents, undergone cancer treatments, or were born with deformities can benefit greatly from these procedures. For example, breast reconstruction after a mastectomy or cleft lip repair are among the most common forms of reconstructive plastic surgery. The emphasis in this type of surgery is on returning the patient to a state of normalcy, both physically and psychologically, which makes it a vital aspect of modern medical care.
Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery: Balancing Art and Science
Plastic surgery and reconstructive surgery, while related, have distinct goals. Plastic and reconstructive surgery combines the precision of medical science with the artistic eye for aesthetics. Surgeons in this field must balance both functionality and appearance, whether the procedure is reconstructive or purely cosmetic.
Reconstructive procedures are essential for patients who need to restore form and function, but plastic surgery procedures also address aesthetic improvements. Surgeons performing these complex operations must have a deep understanding of anatomy, along with advanced skills to achieve desired results. Whether reconstructive or cosmetic, plastic and reconstructive surgery offers patients the opportunity to improve their quality of life.
Popular Plastic Surgery Procedures in the USA
With the rise of aesthetic awareness, more individuals are turning to plastic surgery procedures to improve their physical appearance and boost their self-confidence. Among the most sought-after surgeries are rhinoplasty (nose reshaping), liposuction, breast augmentation, and facelifts. These procedures offer long-term results, helping individuals enhance their natural beauty or restore youthful features.
The field of plastic surgery continues to innovate, with non-invasive options like Botox and dermal fillers becoming increasingly popular as alternatives to traditional surgery. However, for more significant changes or corrections, plastic surgery procedures remain the preferred choice for those looking to make permanent enhancements. Each procedure is tailored to the individual’s needs, ensuring that the outcome aligns with their personal goals and desires.
