Mugshot Monday - “Rye Whiskey Cup” by Kara ZumBahlen with Straight Rye Whiskey by Tattersall Distillery

I love this rye whiskey sipper my friend Kara makes. She has a Bourbon version too with a corn design. I picked the rye version because the glaze pools on the rye grain carved into the cup. It’s just lovely. It feels good on the fingers, too.

Apparently she almost sold out at the latest Claybuddies sale this weekend when a woman bought 10 of her cups. WHISKEY PARTY!!

Actually, she said she was going to serve a dessert in them instead. 😂

I’m enjoying some Tattersall straight rye whiskey with my longtime friend -- and Kara’s husband -- Dave Austin. This whiskey is goooooood, btw. Dave and I had been trying (and failing) to find time to get together and catch up. It seemed like the planets finally aligned for us.

I love it when you get together with a good friend you haven’t seen in a long time and it feels like you’ve been talking for 10 minutes AND 4 hours at the same time. It was a great night. Cheers!

I have shown this Yunomi before but at that point it was not for sale. I have recently taken it out of my collection and added it onto my Etsy (the link is in my bio). I like to hold onto some of the best pieces of each firing in order to figure out why I prefer one cup over another. After I have determined why I was so drawn to a cup I will occasionally put it up for sale. There are a few things about this Yunomi that were different and caught my attention. One was the glaze, this is Ayumi Green on porcelain fired in the soda kiln. It has such an amazing contrast of lush soda buildup on one side to a matt finish on the other. The second thing was that this is a “one off cup” where I was experimenting with the shape. All of my work has is done in the same style but just by expanding the base slightly more it changed this Yunomi from my regular taller forms. Ma dernière création de l'année cuite à l'atelier poterie est ce plateau! J'ai pris mon temps pour le réaliser, car il est en plusieurs parties: j'ai d'abord réalisé une plaque, que j'ai imprimé avec mes fameux tampons textures (ici une plaque de coupe pour big shot de chez @artemio.be, vous pouvez voir comment je les fabrique dans mes stories en highlight "pottery stamps"). Sur cette plaque imprimée, j'ai ensuite ajouté un boudin de terre sur tout le pourtour, que j'ai ensuite travaillé pour lui donner un joli profil. J'étais persuadée que le tout allait fendiller, casser au séchage, alors que l'ai emballé sous plastique pour un séchage le plus uniforme possible... J'ai eu deux défauts: mon plateau s'est arqué... il n'est pas plat. J'ai eu effectivement de légères fissures, notamment parce que j'ai retourné le plateau pour travaillé son profil, que j'ai rebouché en les ouvrant, remplissant de terre et de barbotine au vinaigre (ce qui a marché, ô joie!) Après le passage du plateau en grès au biscuit, j'ai utilisé cet émail à basse température vert émeraude. Il est magnifique, mais j'ai très vite compris pourquoi il n'a pas de succès dans l'atelier: il refuse de rester liquide, et sédimente immédiatement dans son contenant... il faut le touiller sans s'arrêter... il se mérite! Et j'ai bien sûr essuyé le surplus pour faire apparaître mon motif imprimé. Je suis tellement ravie qu'il soit resté entier jusqu'au bout! En poterie, je me suis mise en tête de me réaliser un service d'assiettes blanches, rondes mais légèrement irrégulières, après avoir vu le résultat de cet émail fabriqué au sein de mon atelier. L'argile est d'abord étalée en plaque de 10mm d'épaisseur, puis découpée en cercles identiques. Ensuite, je l'affine à 8mm d'épaisseur, ce qui déforme légèrement le rond. Ensuite, les galettes sont placées dans des moules qui vont les creuser plus ou moins. Après la cuisson du biscuit, je les trempe dans cet émail blanc satiné appelé Dame Lucie dans l'atelier.
