these first few fanart ABCs (which i SWEAR i am still working on, i’ve just bitten off a lot with this next one and want to do it justice) ended up being redraws or just different approaches to the same concept. and boy do i love doing comparisons!! left column is “old”, right column in new; here are some thoughts! (IDs below the cut)

a. aradia: the original is a gif i made in 2013, back when, you know, i was reading homestuck. i think that’s actually the first property i was actively drawing fanart for, so it’s really nice to revisit. it’s also reeeally satisfying to see how my understanding of character drawing & anatomy has improved, but also how my approach to color & contrast has changed!

b. byleth: i made the first piece about a year ago (feb 2020) for fe3h songweek, based on “torches” by the oh hellos”. i wish i’d drawn byleth’s reflection, but the original also had song lyrics so i needed to keep the negative space. the new one isn’t a redraw (i still honestly really love the original! i think its communicating a lot very effectively, in a lot of different ways); it’s just a different take on byleth reckoning with the history and burden they’re being saddled with against their will. also im using a different brush to color these days ahah

Okay, hear me out.

What if I did a three houses crossover fic with homestuck classpecs?

What if Rhea was a Seer of Life, and each student has to go to her to get their life's purpose read by her? (It also feeds my need for Rhea to interact with other characters in a nurturing way)

What if Claude got read as an Heir of Void? He literally inherits nothing (lmao). But the way Rhea read his life is that he's the keeper of ignorance (because Light could also be the aspect of knowing, so Void could theoretically be the aspect of not-knowing). And this is Claude's worst nightmare because he's literally out here trying to dispel ignorance, and this Archbishop who's renowned in all of this continent as being a fantastic Seer in a long line of Seers tells him "nope, your role in life is to literally keep ignorance."

(And Claude goes to Dimitri, a Maid of Blood naturally, to cry and bang and what have you. Because I'm a mess like that)

Then timeskip happens.

And Claude learns the truth of Rhea's ancestry (and what if she lives. Okay? What if she lives). And he realizes this is the ignorance he must preserve. Because not every truth is his to tell. Not every prejudice could be solved by mutual understanding. Some need trust. And time. And agency for the wronged party.

And Claude realizes.

Oh.

He's the Heir of Void. He inherits a secret. He inherits a safety blanket. A shroud. He is the keeper of ignorance because it is not his truth to tell. And if he had shown a light on this, he would have betrayed everything he fought for. Living side-by-side, building trust and love and understanding slowly, organically.

And Claude embraces his life's purpose.

Parting Thoughts on Dr. McNinja

The Adventures of Dr. McNinja is over. (I’ve linked to the comic archive. Don’t go to the main page unless you want to spoil the ending!)

I won't spend as much time eulogizing it as I did Homestuck. It was another webcomic that was with me through my entire young adulthood. Seeing it end, particularly this week, stirs up those same emotions; times have changed.

I started reading Dr. McNinja in 2006, when I was 19 years old. While I'd never been a fan of superhero comics, I was immediately engrossed in the story of this doctor who was also a ninja, and the bizarre and radical world he inhabited. Ninjas, pirates, dinosaurs, vampires,   zombies, clones, wizard ghosts, ghost wizards, and evil Ronald McDonald and Jean-Claude Van Damme surrogates were par for the course in Doc’s adventures. While it didn’t reinvent the wheel the way MSPA would a few years later, The Adventures of Dr. McNinja still felt like a revelation in 2006. It was the fever dream of every boy born in the 80s: a world where no idea is too awesome or too outlandish to exist. (This was before similar attempts to “awesome up” pop culture became played out.) Fortunately, Chris Hastings was a solid enough storyteller to pull all this together into a narrative and make it work.

I read Dr. McNinja for eleven straight years, every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. It's the longest I've ever stuck with a single story. To his credit, Hastings and his partners never took more than a week off during that entire run. There was no "gigapause" for Dr. McNinja. Just enough time to catch your breath, and then back to work.

The success of Dr. McNinja has helped Hastings land sweet gigs writing for Marvel and Boom comics, and I'm amazed he was able to continue the webcomic for as long as he did. It won't be hard to find more of his work to enjoy. But I'll miss Doc, his family, and the impossibly awesome world they allowed me to visit, three days a week, one ridiculous page at a time.
