Folk music study and revival

Learning about Bartok being one of the fathers of ethnomusicology made me realized how there is often a precedent for almost everything, but that our historical myopia prevents us from seeing that. In the mind of most people, the interest in folk music started in the 60s, with some early pioneers, in the US, like Pete Seeger, starting a decade or two before that.

This is ridiculous if one thinks about it. Pete Seeger himself tells the story about how his father was an ethnomusicologist. There had already been a folk music revival of sorts, and it happened at the turn of the 20th century. And the more widespread revival of the 60s wouldn't have been possible without the work of academics and scholars who started compiling and recording folk music about 60 years before them.
