One thing I will never support and isn’t pleased about is Sizzy. I know you like them but I don’t. It is unhealthy, and rushed. They had Isabelle sacrifice her sobriety for Simon. Don’t get me started on Simon and the writing for him this season. It makes no sense when Simon has an alcoholic mother. Maia was treated so poorly for no reason and Simon x Maia was shoved aside when they actually received the development. Sizzy was just unnecessary then left in the AU!episode from season 1.
I understand what you mean and as a sizzy shipper i actually agree to a certain degree.
s1!sizzy was (in my opinion) fucking adorable, but then the writers just kinda…forgot they existed through s2. They had one or two scenes one on one in the whole season and that’s by far not enough to build up a supposed endgame ship.
The 3b scenes were objectively speaking really cute (imo) but they had no foundation. Simon and Izzy were barely friends at this point so even to me it didn’t have the same impact it would’ve had if they had been steadily growing closer from s1 onwards.
I also agree about the addiction part. I think the writers completely forgot about Simons Mum and the way they handled Izzys addiction was messy from the beginning, so what else is new >_>
I think if the show hadn’t been cancelled they would’ve made sizzy canon in s4, which would’ve been better than s3 by all means and that they wouldn’t have let them kiss in s3 if it weren’t for the extra episodes due to the show being cancelled is something I honestly appreciate, because I can still tell myself that they would’ve done more/better with them next season, but now we’ll never know anyway.
But I agree with Maia. The way not just the breakup with Simon but her whole storyarch with j/ordan and the pack was handled poorly and she deserved better.
I think one problem the writers have is them treating Simon the way the “pretty girl” was treated in older tv-shows. You know, the one who can’t stay single for longer than one episode. (for example, riverdale has the same problem with archie lmao)
In s1 he jumped from crushing on clary to crushing on izzy to sleeping with Maureen to crushing on clary again. Then he went on a date with Maia, dated Clary, dated Maia again and now Izzy. It was just too much, when did he ever get over one of the girls he was with? It doesn’t make any sense. The longest time he was single was between Maia and Izzy but even that wasn’t really long.
And that answer got a lot longer than I planned :’D

Clary: (talking to simon about maureen) how can such a smart and perceptive person like you not notice when the person right next to you is crushing on you?
Simon: i guarantee you I'm not the only smart and perceptive person to make that mistake
Ok let's talk about this. First of all: I'm no big Simon x Clary shipper (I don't even know their shipname)
I think friends, even long-time childhood friends should be allowed to be friends without any romance. Especially long-time-childhood-best-friends
I know it's the same with jalec. But they grew up as brothers. A relationship is forbidden bc of the parabatai stuff. And Alec was in the closet. Simon could just have said sth
But I appreciate that they got back to friends with a little but not too much drama. But here Simon is seriously pining and I don't like that.

My Mind Is Blind To Everything But You
Maia x Maureen
Maia and Simon plan to spend the day just hanging together, playing video games and not getting involved in any Shadowhunter drama. That turns out to be surprisingly easy when a pretty girl interrupts their day to give Simon a box of his stuff and takes a special interest in Maia.
“Yeah, Mom?”
Simon barely looked up from the TV at the knock on the door, cursing as Maia shot his character.
There was a slightly awkward pause and Maia narrowed her eyes as nobody entered. She paused the game, tilting her head to the side as she tuned her senses into whoever was on the other side of the door.
“It’s not your Mom,” Maia said softly, too quiet for anyone other than Simon to hear.
The scent was wrong for it to be Mrs Lewis, or Rebecca, or Clary, her perfume was different and the underlying scent of the actual person was unfamiliar to Maia. She could work out that it was female, and that they were nervous. Her heartbeat was rapid and there was a hint of sweat hanging in the air, due to the current snowfall outside and the fact that the Lewis’ heating system wasn’t the best, it was unlikely that she was sweating because she was hot. So, Maia deduced, it was more likely that she was nervous.
Simon frowned in confusion at the door before dropping his control onto the bed next to him and scrambled his feet from where he was lying on his stomach across his bed, as he tried to get upright Maia had to swerve backwards, narrowing avoiding Simon’s foot in her face.
He stepped over to the door and pulled it open.
From her position on Simon’s bed, her back resting against the headboard, Maia couldn’t see who was stood on the landing outside. But whoever it was, Simon wasn’t expecting to see, judging by his soft “Oh.”
“Hey,” the girl said, her voice soft with an underlying awkwardness, which clarified Maia’s theory of her being uncomfortable.
“Hey,” Simon said back dumbly, Maia resisted the urge to roll her eyes at him, instead, when neither of them said anything for nearly a full minute, she cleared her throat pointedly.
“Your Mom let me in,” the girl said, fiddling with her bracelets awkwardly. “I er—I probably should’ve called ahead or something.

I love you rant. I have been feeling this since episode 1x01. I don't ship Clary with Jace or Simon because I can't stand her character but I recognize chemistry. Simon x Clary have great chemistry but she treats him horribly as a friend and especially now. I watched Clace in ep 2x14, they are so bland, no chemistry and rarely smile around each other. It is forced and awkward. Maia has chemistry with Simon and Jace but those ships won't last because of fans and ultimately book ships. Tbc.
Magnus x Alec are the one couple exception to the rule. They have great chemistry, emotional scenes and writing. They sizzle yet fans pit Magnus and Alec against each other, trying to rush their relationship with a marriage and kids like you said. The problem is they need to stop trying to put a square peg in a round hole. The tv show is so different from the books, the characters are adults with the exception of Simon/Clary/Maureen who are 18. No one is barely a teen on this show at all. Tbc.
I agree again about Simon x Isabelle. Sizzy barely interacts. It is zero romantic chemistry. Their relationship is shallow. Izzy has way more depth and a connection with others. Simon has better chemistry and connection with Maia also. He really has it in spades with Jace and Raphael too. The show is so flawed but the writing has turned into its own entity. 2B is moving even further from the books and turning things political like what happened in the Seelie Court with Jace/Simon/Clary.
Simon doesn’t deserve this! I refuse to feel sorry for Clary though. She knowingly kissed him back despite having lingering feelings for Jace even after the truth came out about Jace. I don’t care for Climon because of Clary mostly. The writers also don’t have the real balls to go against the fans. I feel like the only 2 book ships that crossed over to tv are Malec because they are more visible and Luke x Jocelyn before they killed her off. Sorry about the asks. Your rant set me off next.
See, that’s the thing: I don’t hate Clary.. infact, I actually like her. I really do. I mean, she’s the typical ‘tries to do the right thing as long as the right thing is in line with her interest’ kinda main character… which is normal, i guess.. PLUS Kat is cute and so sweet and nice that I can’t help but like her character too.
BUT I disagree the fact that she keeps leading Simon on when she knows for fact that she’s still undecided about Jace. That’s not fair.
That’s downright cruel actually..
Clace fans were all like ‘Serves him right’.. ‘Simon should know better. Clary belongs with Jace.’.. ‘Simon is such a creep. Perving on his best friend’.. ‘Simon shouldn’t force Clary to be with him’..etc..
I wasn’t even a diehard Climon fan nor am i anti-Clace (I just think Climon is cute due to the characters developed such sweet and happy atmosphere when they’re together - again, chemistry is something we can’t control) and even I was like:
How on earth it was Simon’s fault? In which way he was wrong? Because he was happy that his longtime crush finally reciprocate his feeling? He never did anything beyond being her best friend and just steadfastly be by her side, supporting her - no matter how much it must’ve hurt to be ridiculed by Jace and yes, even Alec.. for being a mundane (and later vampire). He didn’t even confessed until after Clary and Jace broke up (and was so nervous about it too). And it was still up to Clary to accept him or not.
How the hell was he to know or even suspect that Clary never fully loves him? Yeah sure he might’ve  realize that Clary wouldn’t get over Jace so quickly.. but he figured it’ll okay since they found out that Jace is her brother. So obviously he felt insecure when Izzy told him that Jace wasnt Clary’s brother after all which was why he decided to follow them to Seelie’s Court - some fans called him a jerk for this..
Hello~ excuse me? Simon never once forbid Clary from doing anything/interacting with Jace.. never once questioned her.. He trusted her but yeah, he is still an 18 years old boy and yes he still feel that insecurity and felt this need to show Clary and prove to himself that he is useful… that he has nothing to worry about.. Clary is his best friend and lover, of course she loves him..‘
His face when he found out otherwise in the most humiliating way possible.. just… hurts my heart so much.
What gets to me is that  at the end, Clary will get her happy ending with perfect Jace (coz OBVIOUSLY Jace is only concerned about Clary’s feeling and who the fuck cares bout the guy he just so gloriously up’ed one more time, right?) and thats that.
And if Simon dares to even show that he’s hurt and doesn’t want to see/help the Shadowhunters for a while after this, if he dares to show normal ‘ i’m done with all of you’ reaction, fans would crucify him. They expect and want him to just accept it and brush it all off and jump into bed with Izzy as soon as possible so he won’t be a bother to Clace ship anymore.
And if he dares to be otherwise.. to show how deeply hurt he feels, well~ he is a jerk and stupid for not seeing this coming.
I never hate Clace but (most) their fans seriously are horrible jerks.
Oh and btw:
Clary kissed Simon first.
So tell me again how it was his fault that he thinks Clary likes him back?
See, I’m all about chemistry..
- That happy laugh that Clary have when she’s with Simon.
- That beautiful easy smile she always have when she looks at him
- That at first cocky turned bewildered turned awed turned amused turned affectionate turned shy looks/smiles Jace has for Maia throughout their encounters.
- That contempt turned annoyed turned pity turned grudging respect turned ‘you’re pretty but you’re still annoying’ turned affectionate ‘you idiot’ look from Maia to Jace
- That soft looks in Raphael’s eyes when he looks at Izzy
- That shine in Magnus’s eyes when Alec is near
- That barely concealed affectionate smile Alec has for Magnus when he thinks Magnus is being cute (to be fair, Alec thinks Magnus is always adorable^^)
- Those glances Alec keeps giving Magnus as if to constantly checks that the warlock is okay.

Reuniting The Sky (The Colour AU) [Clary x Jace x Simon]
(this is going to go with a gifset if I get around to it) [Set kinda during 1x01]
[AO3 Link]
Clary Fray has known for a long time that her childhood best friend Simon Lewis was her soulmate. Her black and white world had always been tinted with colour as the two of them grew together to become the wonderful young adults they are. Simon Lewis has also known since he was a child that Clary was his soulmate. But neither of them decided to tell the other. They longed for the day colour seeped back into their dull black and white world. But were too scared that maybe it wasn’t the same for the other. But what would happen when they both find out they have another soulmate?
Today has been a long day, Clary thought, as she slowly walked into the cafe that Simon was patiently waiting for her in. Wearing a sad smile she walked up to him. “Give me the professors' names and I... I will end them,” Simon said sternly. “You know, with... with a scathing e-mail to the dean.” “Don’t bother,” Clary handed Simon the acceptance letter to Simon, to his amaze she started cackling with laughter. “Sad face? Really?” he laughed, as the two of them sat down for a coffee. It wasn’t the coffee Clary craved, it was the colour she would see the minute she touched Simon’s hand. She longed to see the bright colours paint the room so gradually. As an artist the idea of colours fascinated her. “I guess I should congratulate you,” Simon smiled as he leaned over and gave Clary a hug. Don’t let go, Clary thought as she watched the dull black wall turn into an array of colours. Blue, purple, and a dash of yellow. I want to stay in this world forever. Simon clung to Clary, not wanting to part from her. The warmth of her body against his made him melt, as the colours came to life around him. The two of them wondered whether or not to tell the other, or to cling to the other and never let go. You are my dream, Simon Lewis. You can give me everything I could ever ask for.
--
A few hours later Simon and Clary decided to go to Pandemonium with their friend Maureen, to celebrate Clary’s eighteenth birthday. The three of them had no idea if they would be able to get in with their fake IDs, Clary’s sucked more than Maureen’s and Simon’s. But they decided to give it a go anyway.
Pandemonium was packed with every type of person you could think of, and more. And this was only outside the venue. Clary impatiently stood waiting for Simon to get himself ready, and out of his bright yellow graffiti van. When suddenly a tall, blonde guy, full of tattoos walked straight into her. Clary went to yell at the guy, but that’s when she noticed...the colours. This can’t be possible. How?! Clary’s mind screamed, giving the tattooed man a confused glare. “Excuse me?” She blurted out, the tattooed man was bewildered too. Not only could she see him but he could see colours. For the first time in his life. “I-uh, you can see me?” He asked, trying not to reveal the vast colours that appeared for such a brief moment. “Well, duh,” Clary smirked. Clary’s mind went straight to denial, there was no way that she just saw a flicker of colours. Not when she had Simon. Before Clary realised the blonde man had disappeared off into the club. I have to find him, she thought. I have to know the truth.
--
Clary, Simon, and Maureen after what felt like hours had finally entered the club. The blonde tattooed guy was still on Clary’s mind. Colours were the least of her worries. What worried her was what could this mean. “Clary, what do you want to drink?” Simon asked, gently touching her elbow to grab her attention. The colours came flooding in. The room was a dark purple, with flashing white lights. “Anything,” she smiled, fakely. She knew Simon could tell her smile was fake. But she didn’t really care about him at this moment. She didn’t care about herself, or the colours she longed for. She cared about why this guy she just met also allowed her to experience colour. If that was what happened. “Okay,” he smiled sadly, “Maureen and I will get the drinks you just wait here,” “See you in a bit,” Maureen smiled. Clary forced herself to smile back, nodding that she would wait for them. But would she?
--
What was that? Jace thought. Was that really a flash of colour. He tried to shake her off. This girl that not only could see through his glamour but brought colour into his life. The most beautiful girl he’d ever seen. In both colour and black and white. Orange. That’s what he knew. She was orange, like the sun. Yet her eyes sparkled like the stars. Jace was lost in his thoughts when his best friend and parabatai, Alec Lightwood tapped him. “Jace, we have a job to do,” he shouted, over the echoing music. Jace snapped right back into it. I am a warrior. Keep your head on straight and let’s get to work. The best of his kind, Jace Wayland was knew all throughout the Shadow world. The best of the best. You don’t want to be on the wrong side of Jace Wayland, that’s what everyone thought. Jace, Alec, and along with Alec’s sister, Isabelle charged over to the place that would become a demon’s deathbed.
--
As Simon and Maureen got their drinks, Simon scanned Pandemonium for Clary. She had gone. Damn, Clary where are you? Simon started to panic, what if something had happened to her? He couldn’t wouldn’t let that happen. Frantically Simon started to search the whole of Pandemonium, pushing his way through the crowd but she was nowhere to be seen. He wanted to scream for her. It was if he was drowning without her. Clary was his world.
Simon wove in and out of hundreds of people, until he found an open space where he could finally breathe. Is this what they mean when they say there’s many more fish in the see, because I don’t like it. As Simon calmed his nerves he felt something hit his shoulder. As he quickly turned around he noticed colour in the people in front of him. Clary, he thought. But she wasn’t there. No one was there.
Jace stopped, this can’t be happening. He turned around frantically and stared at the mundane. The few moments of colour that he saw as he touched him, showed the beauty within this man’s eyes. Jace was flabbergasted. He didn’t know whether to hit this guy or hug him. What does this mean? First the girl he thought was the definition of sunshine, and now a guy who looked like the moon. Beautifully lonely. Just like him. There’s no way that he could have two soulmates. He didn’t deserve them, that’s what Jace had always thought. So he ran. He ran from the sun and then he ran from the moon. A lonely star doesn’t deserve the light of the moon let alone the light of the sun. Let alone them both at once. I deserve to be engulfed by darkness.
--
Clary searched everywhere, but she couldn’t find him. She thought maybe she should give up. Go and find Simon, why did she want to find this guy so badly? She already had someone, a perfect someone that could give her everything she dreamed of but something inside of her tugged at her telling her to not let this go. That she may need them both. Clary, Simon, and this mystery man. What could go wrong?
She saw him, she saw him standing next to Simon. Out of all the coincidences this one scared her the most. He was staring at Simon, yet Simon was acting as if he wasn’t there. What is going on? She ran, she ran towards them both, reaching to them, not wanting to let them go. But once she got there. The man was gone, and the stars went with him. “Simon, didn’t you see him?” she asked, confused. “See who, Clary? More importantly where did you go? I turned around and you were gone. I couldn’t find you. I was so scared, Clary so scared,” Simon cried, taking her into his arms. Clary couldn’t care for the colours time, and neither could Simon, the both of them where trying to figure out how they could see colour from someone other than each other. “There was a guy, he was right in front of you, Simon. He bumped into you, Simon. How could you not see him?” she explained. He bumped into you, Simon, echoed inside Simon’s mind as he clung to Clary for dear life. “There was no one there, Clary. I swear it,” he answered. Clary decided to not bring it up anymore. It would only hurt him, if she told him that he was her soulmate. A soulmate that she didn’t even know the name of.
--
A star shines it’s brightest in the darkness. But when a star is surrounding by sunlight and moonlight does it fade? Or does it shine brighter than ever before?
Jace wanted to run to them, he wanted to ask them how on earth this could be happening. He could see them both, from where he was standing. He knew that he shouldn’t be distracted, yet the stood there shining together. The moon and the sun. His moon and sun. They knew each other. Yet they didn’t know him. Maybe that was why he was just a lonely star, craving the light of the sun and the light of the moon. Maybe they were each other’s soulmates, and not his. Maybe a lonely star was supposed to hide in the shadow of the light. “JACE!” Alec bellowed, “Stop getting distracted, what is with you tonight?” “Nothing,” he lied. Jace hit his cheeks, making them a rosy red. The demon entered the room, that was when Jace knew it was time to get to work.
--
Clary saw him, out the corner of her eye. He was staring at her. No at them. “Simon, quick we need to go,” She shouted. “What about Maureen?” Simon asked, “We’ll be quick, I just, we just. Please,” She begged, as she pulled Simon through the crowd. He nodded following her course of action. Clary couldn’t think about anyone else other than Simon and this mystery man. She couldn’t care about the people she pushed out of the way as she pushed through the crowd like a bulldozer. She just knew they had to get to him.
Finally they reached the room she saw him enter, there was a curtain blocking the entrance, she pushed it open. And strolled in, Simon following in behind her. There was three of them. Two guys and a girl. The other two, were definitely related they looked like each other. But her eyes darted straight towards him. “Clary, why are we in an empty room?” Simon asked. Clary slowly turned towards him. “Simon, it’s not empty. Can’t you see them,” She whispered, “Why can’t you see them,” “The better question is how can a mundane see us?” The other guy said. “A what now?” Clary laughed. Simon was bewildered, he couldn’t understand what was going on. But he knew that there was something that he couldn’t see. And it wasn’t colours this time. “I want to know why I can see you, but my best friend can’t,” Clary demanded, “I’m Clary by the way,” “I’m Alec, that’s my sister Isabelle, and that’s Jace. Wait why am I telling you this?” Alec stated, Jace. She finally knew his name. “Mine’s Clary, and this is Simon,” She smiled. “Hi, people I can’t see,” Simon laughed, with fear and confusion. Clary noticed that Jace was avoiding eye contact with her, as if he wanted her to pretend as if he wasn’t there. But Clary wasn’t going to let that happen. She needed to know.
Once again taking Simon’s hand, she stormed them both over to Jace. Jace who was taken back by the confidence of a woman he just met. Clary was decided if this would be the best time to reveal that she experienced colour when she touched the both of them or not. “I’m Clary,” she breathed, putting out her hand, letting go of Simon’s with the other. She wanted him to shake it, so that she could be 100% sure that she did experience colours when touching him. But he wouldn’t do it. “It’s just a hand,” Slowly but surely he took it. She wasn’t wrong. The colours flooded back in so beautifully. It was different with him. With Simon she had gotten so used to experiencing colours. But with Jace it was if she was experiencing it for the first time again. His eyes were beautiful. One blue, one half blue and half brown. He had a whole universe in his eyes. A whole universe clouded by sadness. “I was right,” Clary breathed. Simon and Jace stared at her. “It’s not just Simon, I can see colours with you too,” she admitted. Both of them stood there in shock. “Clary, what are you saying? Who are you saying it too?” Simon asked. Clary noticed Jace pull something from his pocket and wave it across a tattoo on his left arm. “What in the name of...” Simon shouted, “Where did you come from?” “No time to explain that,” Jace whispered, “It’s the same for me,” “Huh?” Clary and Simon said in unison “When I touch you both, I see colours,” he admitted, a small smile on his face. “Wait, was that you before?” Simon  asked, Jace looked at him weirdly. “I felt someone bump into me, and I saw a flash but no one was there.” “Yes it was me.”
Clary, Jace, and Simon stood staring at each other confused, the world around them became quiet, as if it was just the three of them. The sun, the moon, and the stars. Finally back together. Lighting up the darkness.

Hi! I agree with the Malcom X quote and I agree that black women have been treated horribly on the show but I disagree about the Maureen comment, because she /took advantage/ of Simon while he was high. Simon comes back after being away three days (which is very unlike Simon) and /acts/ unlike Simon and she sleeps with him when he has given no hint of this in the past (because Maureen KNOWS he's in love with Clary) We can state that they /both/ made a mistake but what happened wasn't (pt1)
110% Simon’s fault. Just like it isn’t 110% Izzy’s fault what’s going on with her and Raphael right now since she is /under the influence/.youtube (dot com) /watch?v=Oq3rr7nxP4I (she knew something was wrong/different with him) and he was hallucinating! Please and thank you.
I’m sorry anon, but i don’t know why you think that? maureen at no point indicates that she thinks simon is intoxicated or high? what part of dialogue implies that she assaulted him?
M: Okay, who are you and what did you do with Simon?
S: Simon? Never heard of him.
M: I’m serious. I’ve never seen this side of you before. First, you’re acting really weird, you’re disappearing for days on end. Now, this. I mean, I’ve always thought you were cute, but last night you were… [chuckles] I don’t know. You were amazing.
She says that at first he was acting weird then disappeared. Now, this - implying he came back and wasn’t still being weird before they had a great night. She didn’t know he was hallucinating Clary until after they slept together.

Calling Jordan Maia's abuser is so reductive and without context. He was bitten by a werewolf and he changed without realizing what had happened to him. It changed him and he became a different person. When he hurt her, he did everything in his power to fix himself and to help other people like him -people who'd been afflicted by a supernatural disease (and in Shadowhunters, vampirism and lyncathropy are classed as demon diseases) and didn't have the means or knowledge to cope.
It really bugs me that people write off the relationship as abusive but overlook - Simon being so careless over feeding that he bites and almost kills Maureen... Jace being possessed by Lilith and having violent dreams of Clary, including almost stabbing her once, then holding her captive for Lilith to kill. All those situations are overlooked/excused because Supernatural!Reasons! Prevail! (Although you can argue that Simon's reasons aren't excusable. He wasn't a newbie vampire. ) But Jordan x Maia gets a Lifetime Movies award analysis for Abuse! Special!
Hi, I’m seeing a few people say they prefer a shorter season but I don’t see how that would benefit the stories. I think they should have a longer season to flesh out characters and have cleaner better continuity. As for programming I think we can do away with these haitus’s except for summer. The actors still get their holidays and have time to do side projects.
If they cut away a lot of one-off villains and replace it with character growth and personal stories, they could probably end up with a strong 18 episode season. But they won’t do that regardless (I imagine) because The Flash should be one of CW’s top-earners and cutting the episode order would hurt them financially. If they do cut it, it’s because not even The Flash is making as much money as it should.
Jordan has been cast and will show up in next week’s episode. Whether they will go in the same direction as the book, who knows at this point. Rumors are that Maia will learn to forgive him, which is how they got together in the book. He was abusive towards her, she broke it off, he turned and went after her in jealously, they bond over being werewolves, she gets cheated on by Simon, Jordan was there to pick up the pieces and they got together. So, no thank you if this happens on the show.
Yes, sorry, I meant either he won’t be as abusive on the show as he was in the books or they won’t actually get back together on the show. I did know that he was appearing to begin with. I would argue that many of the relationships in the books were abusive either physically or emotionally (they’re not good… sorry!) but the show has improved them tenfold. So I hope they would take care with Maia’s story and not stick her with an abuser. I was just saying that we don’t know exactly what route they’ll take, and neither Jordan’s presence nor Isabelle and Simon’s canon ship means that Simon/Maia is doomed.

The Mortal Instruments: City of Lost Souls - Simon x Isabella
Considering they’d already spent one night in bed together, Simon hadn’t expected his second night with Isabelle to be quite so awkward. But then again, this time Isabelle was sober, and awake, and obviously expecting something from him. The problem was, he wasn’t sure exactly what.   He had given her a button-down shirt of his to wear, and he looked away politely while she climbed under the blanket and edged back against the wall, giving him plenty of space.   He didn’t bother changing, just took off his shoes and socks and crawled in next to her in his T-shirt and jeans. They lay side by side for a moment, and then Isabelle rolled against him, draping an arm awkwardly across his side. Their knees bumped together. One of Isabelle’s toenails scratched his ankle. He tried to move forward, and their foreheads knocked.   “Ouch!” Isabelle said indignantly. “Shouldn’t you be better at this?”   Simon was bewildered. “Why?”   “All those nights you’ve spent in Clary’s bed, wrapped in your beautiful platonic embraces,” she said, pressing her face against his shoulder so her voice was muffled. “I figured…”   “We just slept,” said Simon. He didn’t want to say anything about how Clary fit perfectly against him, about how being in a bed with her was as natural as breathing, about the way the scent of her hair reminded him of childhood and sunshine and simplicity and grace. That, he had a feeling, would not be helpful.   “I know. But I don’t just sleep,” Isabelle said irritably. “With anybody. I don’t stay the night usually at all. Like, ever.”   “You said you wanted to—”   “Oh, shut up,” she said, and kissed him. This was marginally more successful. He’d kissed Isabelle before. He loved the texture of her soft lips, the way his hands felt in her long, dark hair. But as she pressed herself against him, he also felt the warmth of her body, her long bare legs against him, the pulse of her blood—and the snap of his fang teeth as they came out.   He pulled back hastily.   “Now what is it? You don’t want to kiss me?”   “I do,” he tried to say, but his fangs were in the way. Isabelle’s eyes widened.   “Oh, you’re hungry,” she said. “When was the last time you had any blood?”   “Yesterday,” he managed to say, with some difficulty.   She lay back against his pillow. Her eyes were impossibly big and black and lustrous. “Maybe you should feed yourself,” she said. “You know what happens if you don’t.”   “I don’t have any blood with me. I’ll have to go back to the apartment,” Simon said. His fangs had already begun to retract.   Isabelle caught him by the arm. “You don’t have to drink cold animal blood. I’m right here.”   The shock of her words was like a pulse of energy zipping through his body, setting his nerves on fire. “You’re not serious.”   “Sure I am.” She started to unbutton the shirt she was wearing, baring her throat, her collarbone, the tracery of faint veins visible beneath her pale skin. The shirt fell open. Her blue bra covered a lot more than many bikinis might, but Simon still felt his mouth go dry. Her ruby flashed like a red stoplight below her collarbone. Isabelle. As if reading his mind, she reached up and drew her hair back, draping it over one shoulder, leaving the side of her throat naked. “Don’t you want… ?”   He caught her wrist. “Isabelle, don’t,” he said urgently. “I can’t control myself, can’t control it. I could hurt you, kill you.”   Her eyes shone. “You won’t. You can hold yourself back. You did with Jace.”   “I’m not attracted to Jace.”   “Not even a little?” she said hopefully. “Eensy bit? Because that would be kind of hot. Ah, well. Too bad. Look, attracted or not, you bit him when you were starving and dying, and you still held back.”   “I didn’t hold back with Maureen. Jordan had to pull me off.”   “You would have.” She took her finger and pressed it to his lips, then ran it down his throat, across his chest, coming to a stop where his heart had once beat. “I trust you.”   “Maybe you shouldn’t.”   “I’m a Shadowhunter. I can fight you off if I have to.”   “Jace didn’t fight me off.”   “Jace is in love with the idea of dying,” said Isabelle. “I’m not.” She slung her legs around his hips—she was amazingly flexible—and slid forward until she could brush her lips against his. He wanted to kiss her, wanted it so badly his whole body ached. He opened his mouth tentatively, touched his tongue to hers, and felt a sharp pain. His tongue had slid along the razor edge of his fang. He tasted his own blood and drew back abruptly, turning his face away from her.    “Isabelle, I can’t.” He closed his eyes. She was warm and soft in his lap, teasing, torturous. His fangs ached painfully; his whole body felt like sharp wires were twisting through his veins. “I don’t want you to see me like this.”   “Simon.” Gently she touched his cheek, turning his face toward her. “This is who you are—”   His fangs had retracted, slowly, but they still ached. He hid his face in his hands and spoke between his fingers. “You can’t possibly want this. You can’t possibly want me. My own mother threw me out of the house. I bit Maureen—she was only a kid. I mean, look at me, look what I am, where I live, what I do. I’m nothing.”   Isabelle stroked his hair lightly. He looked at her between his fingers. Up close he could see that her eyes weren’t black but a very dark brown, flecked with gold. He was sure he could see pity in them. He didn’t know what he expected her to say. Isabelle used boys and threw them away. Isabelle was beautiful and tough and perfect and didn’t need anything. Least of all a vampire who wasn’t even very good at being a vampire.   He could feel her breathing. She smelled sweet—blood, mortality, gardenias. “You’re not nothing,” she said. “Simon. Please. Let me see your face.”   Reluctantly he lowered his hands. He could see her more clearly now. She looked soft and lovely in the moonlight, her skin pale and creamy, her hair like a black waterfall. She unlooped her hands from around his neck. “Look at these,” she said, touching the white scars of healed Marks that snowflaked her silvery skin—on her throat, on her arms, on the curves of her breasts. “Ugly, aren’t they?”   “Nothing about you is ugly, Izzy,” said Simon, honestly shocked.   “Girls aren’t supposed to be covered in scars,” Isabelle said matter-of-factly. “But they don’t bother you.”   “They’re part of you—No, of course they don’t bother me.”   She touched his lips with her fingers. “Being a vampire is part of you. I didn’t ask you to come here last night because I couldn’t think of anyone else to ask. I want to be with you, Simon. It scares the hell out of me, but I do.”   Her eyes shimmered, and before he could wonder for more than a moment whether it was with tears, he had leaned forward and kissed her. This time it wasn’t awkward. This time she leaned into him, and he was suddenly under her, rolling her on top of him. Her long black hair fell down around them both like a curtain. She whispered to him softly as he ran his hands up her back. He could feel her scars under his fingertips, and he wanted to tell her he thought of them as ornaments, testaments to her bravery that only made her more beautiful. But that would have meant stopping kissing her, and he didn’t want to do that. She was moaning and moving in his arms; her fingers were in his hair as the two of them rolled sideways, and now she was under him, and his arms were full of the softness and warmth of her, and his mouth with the taste of her, and the scent of her skin, salt and perfume and… blood.   He stiffened again, all over, and Isabelle felt it. She caught hold of his shoulders. She was luminous in the darkness. “Go ahead,” she whispered. He could feel her heart, slamming against his chest. “I want you to.”   He closed his eyes, pressed his forehead to hers, tried to calm himself. His fangs were back, pushing into his lower lip, hard and painful. “No.”   Her long, perfect legs wrapped around him, her ankles locking, holding him to her. “I want you to.” Her breasts flattened against his chest as she arched up against him, baring her throat. The scent of her blood was everywhere, all over him, filling the room.   “Aren’t you scared?” he whispered.   “Yes. But I still want you to.”   “Isabelle—I can’t—”   He bit her.   His teeth slid, razor-sharp, into the vein at her throat like a knife slicing into the skin of an apple. Blood exploded into his mouth. It was like nothing he had experienced before. With Jace he had been barely alive; with Maureen the guilt had crushed him even as he had drunk from her. He had certainly never had the sense that either of the people he had bitten had liked it.   But Isabelle gasped, her eyes flying open and her body arcing up against him. She purred like a cat, stroking his hair, his back, little urgent movement of her hands saying Don’t stop, Don’t stop. Heat poured out of her, into him, lighting his body; he had never felt, imagined, anything else like it. He could feel the strong, sure beat of her heat, pounding through her veins into his, and for that moment it was as if he lived again, and his heart contracted with pure elation—   He broke away. He wasn’t sure how, but he broke away and rolled onto his back, his fingers digging hard into the mattress at his sides. He was still shuddering as his fangs retracted. The room shimmered all around him, the way things did in the few moments after he drank human, living blood.   “Izzy… ,” he whispered. He was afraid to look at her, afraid that now that his teeth were no longer in her throat, she would stare at him with revulsion or horror.   “What?”   “You didn’t stop me,” he said. It was half accusation, half hope.   “I didn’t want to.” He looked at her. She was on her back, her chest rising and falling fast, as if she’d been running. There were two neat puncture wounds in the side of her throat, and two thin lines of blood that ran down her neck to her collarbone. Obeying an instinct that seemed to run deep under the skin, Simon leaned forward and licked the blood from her throat, tasting salt, tasting Isabelle. She shuddered, her fingers fluttering in his hair. “Simon…”   He drew back. She was looking at him with her big dark eyes, very serious, her cheeks flushed. “I…”   “What?” For a wild moment he thought she was going to say ‘I love you,’ but instead she shook her head, yawned, and hooked her finger through one of the belt loops on his jeans. Her fingers played with the bare skin at his waist.    Somewhere Simon had heard that yawning was a sign of blood loss. He panicked. “Are you okay? Did I drink too much? Do you feel tired? Are—”   She scooted closer to him. “I am fine. You made yourself stop. And I’m a Shadowhunter. We replace blood at triple the rate a normal human being does.”   “Did you…” He could barely bring himself to ask. “Did you like it?”   “Yeah.” Her voice was husky. “I liked it.”   “Really?”   She giggled. “You couldn’t tell?”   “I thought maybe you were faking it.”   She raised herself up on one elbow and looked down at him with her glowing dark eyes —how could eyes be dark and bright at the same time? “I don’t fake things, Simon,” she said. “And I don’t lie, and I don’t pretend.”   “You’re a heartbreaker, Isabelle Lightwood,” he said, as lightly as he could with her blood still running through him like fire. “Jace told Clary once you’d walk all over me in high-heeled boots.”   “That was then. You’re different now.” She eyed him. “You’re not scared of me.”   He touched her face. “And you’re not scared of anything.”   “I don’t know.” Her hair fell forward. “Maybe you’ll break my heart.” Before he could say anything, she kissed him, and he wondered if she could taste her own blood. “Now shut up. I want to sleep,” she said, and she curled up against his side and closed her eyes.   Somehow, now, they fit, where they hadn’t before. Nothing was awkward, or poking into him, or banging against his leg. It didn’t feel like childhood and sunlight and gentleness. It felt strange and heated and exciting and powerful and… different. Simon lay awake, his eyes on the ceiling, his hand stroking Isabelle’s silky black hair absently. He felt like he’d been caught up in a tornado and deposited somewhere very far away, where nothing was familiar. Eventually he turned his head and kissed Izzy, very lightly, on the forehead; she stirred and murmured but didn’t open her eyes.
