Clans of Belari #3 Aftershock Comics 2021 Written by Peter & Rob Blackie Illustrated by Daniel Maine Coloured by Carlos Lopez Lettered by Taylor Esposito    After Gummy bribes the right people, Te’a is able to pursue her dream of being a pilot. As it turns out she is a gifted pilot, whose accomplishments quickly earn her notoriety. But her mav-erick decision-making puts her at odds with her own Chieftain, Burke Graff. Cluthian’s quest for alien-tech weaponry leads him to a surprising discovery: a technology that is destined to alter the balance of power in the System. But for Cluthian to carry out his plan, he needs someone capable, and expendable…    This is one of those series that gets better with each issue.  It is a prime example of what good strong storytelling is supposed to look like as well.  The crescendo of storytelling is beautifully demonstrated throughout the series thus far and this issue feels like it is leading us towards a climax and it’s going to be one that is sure to thrill and excite.  I mean if this is any indication of what’s to come I’m ready to strap in beside Gummy and go for that ride.  This has been building up to what’s to come and that we’ve jumped to that point and don’t feel like we’ve missed those years is really impressive to me.    I am a huge fan of the way that this is being told.  The story & plot development that we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information is presented exceptionally well.  The character development that we see through the dialogue, the character interaction as well as how we see them act and react to the situations and circumstances which they encounter helps us see their personalities magnificently.  The pacing is excellent and as it takes us through the pages revealing more of the story the more we are drawn into it as well.    How we see this being structured and how the layers within the story are continuing to emerge, grow, evolve and strengthen is magnificently rendered here.  Just the sequence events we see and how they impact the story arc is masterfully rendered and I cannot stress this enough.  These avenues that open up are sensational.  How we see everything working together to create the story’s ebb & flow as well as how it moves the story forward is incredibly well achieved.      The interiors here are a very strong classic comic book style and they take this science fiction drama to that place it needs it to be.  The linework is clean, crisp and strong and the varying weights and techniques being utilised to create the level & quality in the detail work that we see is magnificent.  The faces and facial expressions really do wonders in furthering the characterisation.  The way backgrounds are being utilised to expand and enhance the moments is fantastic.  How we see them work within the composition of the panels to bring out the depth perception, sense of scale and the overall sense of size and scope to the story is great.  The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a remarkably talented eye for storytelling.  The various hues and tones within the colours being utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work show a sensational eye for how colour works.     The subterfuge, intrigue and machinations that we see behind the scenes from the others in this story is expressed extremely well.  How they add to the depth of storytelling is amazing and it takes the story to this place where nighttime soap operas belong.  The writing here is so strong and complex and the characterisation is sensational while these interiors really bring it all to life beautifully.  Aftershock can do no wrong when it comes to what they put on stands and this book is living proof of this.

@true0neutral - Hazel, half-elf cleric
@fauxfire76 - Darvin, human bard
@miaaoi - Froseth, dragonborn monk
@hyperewok1 - Remi, human paladin
Marion - Ava, human ranger
Little bit of a reshuffle - well, okay, a lot of a reshuffle. Poor @noctumsolis had some family health issues to deal with, and @sfwarlock is no longer with the group so at least some of this was a ... potentially temporary write-out, depending on situational stuff. So bullet-points.
After having hauled themselves and Alisaie out of the Shadowfell, the Cupcake Coterie sort of flumped themselves down in a wood elf guest lodge while Bethrynna, Eryn’s cousin, put together something resembling food. She offered to sit outside with her cousin to have the conversation they were allowed before she made good on her bargain to serve Nerull ... but he said there wasn’t any need because he said he was going with her. He told the others that he was struggling and failing to acclimate to the world outside the dark void that was the predominance of his memory, and hoped that maybe walking between and watching from a distance would let him get enough used to it so that he could jump back in again properly ... or, if not, he could at least serve to guide his friends to whatever comes after death, when they finally go that way (though not, he said, for a long time). Nerull and Pelor, those set over death and life respectively, passed on their acceptance of this, and Eryn - Forest Forsaken, Family Found - passed back the Boots of Elvenkind, gave and received thanks and well-wishes, and left for his own adventure with his last remaining blood-kin.
There was a brief discussion of what happened in the Shadowfell, and it turned out that Alisaie was figuring out some things she hadn’t known that she as an aasimar could do. Apparently a combination of experience and acceptance of her being other than specifically human is unlocking the more celestial elements of what she is. She’d be hard-pressed to pass for generic human these days.
They got a good night’s sleep to the point where they kind of missed dawn prayers, had breakfast courtesy Riswynn, and then met their ‘tour guide’ - a young boy named Bannon and his blink dog puppy, Cal. He showed them to the outpost-village’s ‘shower room’ and let them clean up, then took them to the elders of the clan.
There was discussion with the wood elf elders about what’s been going on in the Elvenwild. The ancient green who mothered Coryvel has been mostly preying on the High Elves, and apparently there was a recent surrender on the part of the High Elves - so there’s an issue there to deal with. (Darvin is basically looking to entirely eradicate every chromatic dragon on the continent. He’s ambitious, we give him that.) The Wood Elves, on the other hand, were largely being left alone by the green, because they didn’t seem to have anything she wanted ... but they’re being attacked by corrupted drow. So the elves of the Elvenwild are having it on all sides, really, and aren’t in the best situations.
The wood elf elders said that they couldn’t prioritise the dragon over the drow yet - though they might have to revisit if the high elves have surrendered to the ancient green because it might lead to a high elf / wood elf war. However, the Cupcake Coterie decided that they were going to try to lure the ancient green out of her lair so they could take her out, hopefully with some help. The decision was made to call the ancient green out in a week’s time, to the fields of Goldendale where the Belarys mercenaries that Alisaie messaged Kezia to hire on Goldendale’s behalf ... with Alisaie, who’s had the killing blow on nearly every dragon they’ve encountered, as bait. (The two parts of the message were “come and have a go if you think you’re hard enough” and, “We left your son’s head to rot and used it to start a revolution; let’s see what we can do with yours.” So that was a thing.)
They decided to leave the half-elves of the High Elf palace to stay with the wood elves until it was safe for them to travel and let them find their own way wherever they want. Scouts would accompany the Cupcake Coterie to collect them, while the group found a stable door that Hazel could use as a gateway for her Homeward Key - they had to use something larger so that they could get cart and new horse through. But because they wanted to wait until sundown, for purposes of stealth, they had some breathing space to tour the outpost-village, which was fun for them.
The grounds of the High Elf palace were littered with bodies when they arrived - Crownsguard and palace guard both. They didn’t investigate that, mostly because they just wanted to get out and go home. Which they did with all due speed.
When they arrived, it turned out that Hearthome’s winter-fallow fields were being used as a mercenary camp - Kezia came through on the hires, clearly. Hazel and Riswynn figured they would check on that later and went straight into the main house to hug Twilly and Miranda and explain a few things. Twilly and Miranda are going to outright murder Lady Emavaela if the rest of the group don’t first (or if they don’t find any kind of reason that she doesn’t deserve being murdered, which is starting to get doubtful, even if they did figure out that it’s possible that Hazel’s birth was less about “Lady Emavaela likes to screw humans” and more “the Elvenwild high elves are assholes who use a night with their beautiful diplomat as a deal-sweetener when they negotiate”).
Remi, on the other hand, went straight for the mercenary camps, where she met an old friend - Brawdr, a dwarven mercenary who provided Remi’s first lessons in swordplay when she was younger. Turned out that Brawdr was also the dwarf whose life Alisaie saved when she first discovered her wings, when she was driven out of Belarys. That was fun to discover. In any case, Brawdr explained that there was going to be a meeting of the hired companies to discuss the situation, and that the Cupcake Coterie were very much invited after they’ve had dinner with the family.
Froseth got mobbed by Skylar and Farideh. Darvin got dropped on by Evan. All the hugs.
So next session is an “At dawn, we plan!” sort of thing, for those of you who are into Critical Role.

Paying it Forward (Fic)
Brawdr raised his shield in plenty of time to catch his attacker’s blow, hardly even needing to think about it. There was potential there, sure, but his opponent had a lot more to learn. “Your every swing screams louder than you do, short-stack!”
His opponent, a twelve-year-old girl with messy black hair and a stern expression, looked even more stern when she frowned. Brawdr stifled a laugh. It was rare that he could call a human short, even a young human, but he had a good six inches on the child. Brawdr was on the tall end of dwarven height, and he wasn’t sure this Crestwind girl was ever going to be that much taller than him. Still, for all she still telegraphed her weightier strikes, she was coming along well for someone Brawdr had first seen hitting a lamp post with a stick.
Brawdr shook his head and raised his practice sword, a gesture that indicated an end to their bout. “You got that swat and riposte move down, anyway. Let’s see how well you retain it after a day’s running about. Off with you; I’m sure your folks got chores for you.”
Young Crestwind looked disappointed, but she raised her own practice blade to acknowledge the end of combat. She slid the blade into her belt, slung her practice shield across her back, and gave Brawdr one of her rare smiles – a flash of small, solid teeth with awkward warmth at the edges. “See you tomorrow, Brawdr,” she said, before heading off to the more residential parts of town; to her family, their bakery, and her tiny fluffball of a dog. To a life she was making every preparation to leave behind her for more exciting things as soon as she could get away with it.
Brawdr watched her go, shaking his head. “Kid’s got no notion of what she’s getting herself into.”
“So why teach her?” Kallad, a weather-beaten dwarf with a voice as grizzled and rough as his beard, spoke up from the hay wagon he was using as a makeshift day bed. “Didn’t think you went for them that young.”
Brawdr gave Kallad a flat, ice-cold look. “Not like that, you pile of cloaker shit. Kid wanted some lessons. Call it paying it forward. It’d surprise you how much potential teenage human girls can have, if you bring it out of them.”
Kallad frowned at Brawdr over the edge of the hay wagon. “This something to do with what happened to the rest of your Shield-Splitters? ‘Cos you been sitting on that one for two months now.”
“I’m not getting out of this one, am I?” If Brawdr was honest, he didn’t entirely want to. He was going to have to tell that one eventually. The wound in his heart caused by the loss of his squad would fester if he didn’t let the pain flow free.
Still, it was hard. So when Kallad simply fixed Brawdr with a steady expectant look, Brawdr had to take a moment to collect himself with closed eyes and a deep, slightly ragged breath before he could begin.
It was as much shock as anything else that got Brawdr to open his eyes. He hadn’t had another breath in him, and he knew it – some things even a dwarven constitution couldn’t handle, and whatever he’d just drunk was clearly one of those things on top of the rest of his injuries. But there had been another breath, dragged out of him by a feeling of light and cleansing healing that he recognised from the few times he’d had cleric healing. Of course, if we’d had a cleric on this run, when the harpies attacked, we wouldn’t be in this mess.
With an effort to focus his mind back on the present danger, Brawdr turned his attention to what his eyes were telling him. The power that pulled him back from the edge of death, however slightly, was divine, and so was the face in front of him – young, hair that looked like someone spun it from winter sunlight and white gold, eyes the same pale clear blue as a Damyl winter sky. Those eyes started worried but shaded through relief at his breathing to a combination of rage, grief and betrayal at the situation. Brawdr, staggered and almost dead, didn’t understand that expression at all. If he was honest, he didn’t want to.
A voice came from behind her, then: male, gravelly, with the inflections marking a resident of the less prosperous districts of Belarys. “Step away from them, girl. We’ve got looting to do, and a throat to cut. Then we’re going to talk about what you did just then.”
Brawdr, still staggered by the poison, could only watch as the girl – who, he realized when he got a better look at her, couldn’t be more than thirteen – grabbed Trey’s axe and staggered to her feet with it clutched in her hands, a thin human shield between Brawdr and the mid-height portly human and the somewhat pinch-faced woman who was probably his wife, neither of whom seemed to share much in the way of family resemblance to their self-confessed daughter. Brawdr spent little time on that bit of trivia, so shaken was he by the sure and certain knowledge that Trey was dead. He would never have let his axe fall if he lived. Apparently even a half-orc’s ability to bounce back from certain death got trumped by a good solid poison.
Then the girl said something that froze Brawdr’s blood. “Leave them alone, Dad! You don’t get to reward yourself for this! Anyway, we saw your workbench, me and Edrik. He’s taking all the evidence to the guard right now. Run, and maybe you won’t have to go to jail forever.”
The pinch-faced woman grumbled a particularly nasty string of profanities while the man lunged forward too fast for the girl to so much as raise the axe in self-defense. Her father slapped the axe out of her hands with one hand and grabbed her wrist with the other. For all the girl dragged her heels on the boards of the airship docking tower, it wasn’t enough, and Brawdr could only watch as the man flung his own daughter off the edge of the tower, towards the ocean-side cliff face and its jagged rocks hundreds of feet below.
The man turned away from the murder of his daughter, producing a knife from seemingly nowhere … and then the sky lit up behind him and the teenage girl with the faintly celestial look rose to the platform, borne away from her death by a pair of ephemeral white-gold wings. The three still-living people on the dock stared as she landed next to the axe, picked it up again and stood, wings bent in an unconscious mantling gesture of protection. “Leave. Them. Alone, Dad.”
The man backed away in the general direction of his wife. With a snarl at the winged little girl he’d apparently fathered, he said, “We’ll be back. And you’d better not be here when we are because if I see you again, I finish it with blades, not a fall. I’ll make it stick next time, abomination. I—”
That broke the girl’s badly-fraying calm and left a spark of purest rage, and she bellowed “LEAVE!” at him.
Her parents – her presumed parents – ran. Because apparently they had enough sense to retreat when something that looked so close to divine was that angry at them.
The rage abated quickly after that, and left only a thin, too-blonde girl who turned back to Brawdr on trembling legs. “I’m sorry. About them, and that I couldn’t do more. I … didn’t want Edrik to lose you.” With that, she offered Brawdr a hand. Brawdr took it, noting with amusement that she managed to hold a two-handed battle-axe with one hand while pulling a good-sized dwarf in full armour to his feet with the other. Strong kid, he thought. And I’ve never seen a weapon attune to someone that fast.
The amusement was faint and short-lived, though; it died when he turned around to look at what had become of his team. They all lay sprawled at the foot of the boarding ramp, where the criminal pair had set up their impromptu ‘mercy stall’. Trey, their dim-witted but kind-hearted barbarian whose axe had saved the last of the Shield-splitters even when he himself could not. Ardren, a gnome thief who could vanish surprisingly well for a man with beacon-bright red hair and more freckles than stars in the sky. Jerhen, Brawdr’s shield-brother since they were toddling. Even the newest addition to their band, a lilac-skinned tiefling bard called Mockery, who had been hurt so badly in their fight with the harpies that all they could do was stabilise her until they could get her to a healer … or a potion. Mockery was the only reason they’d bought the potions in the first place. No matter how much Trey wanted to be in fighting shape for a good carouse, they wouldn’t have bought from an untried source if Mockery’s life hadn’t been on the line. Brawdr was the leader. He’d given it the go-ahead. In trying to save Mockery’s life, he’d doomed them all … or almost all.
The girl followed Brawdr’s look and then looked away, disgusted. “This is what my parents do when they need to lie low after a big break-in,” she told him. “Usually it’s just water and some herbs to give it colour and stuff – won’t heal you, but won’t hurt you either. This time … I want to say they used the wrong herbs, but…”
Brawdr shook his head. “This isn’t your fault any more than it is mine, kid. We both just get the consequences. I look for a new crew. You, though … word gets around, and no one in those circles likes a snitch. What’ll you do now?”
The girl shrugged, still not looking at Brawdr – not even when the effort of shrugging reminded her of the weight of two-handed great axe in her hand. She offered it to Brawdr. “Sorry. You should have this back.”
“No. It’s yours now.” Then, watching the ice magic play along the blade of the axe, he smiled a little. “And I think I’ve got an idea of where you can go.”
__________
“North’s not a bad bet, for a kid.” Kallad conceded the wisdom of Brawdr’s eventual decision in a thoughtful sort of way. “The People give everyone who wants one a shot, and clan’s almost like family. Better than the one she had, anyway.”
Brawdr nodded. “Good weapon, a general direction, and all of Trey’s part of the pay. Least I could do. Pretty much literally.” He sighed. “I owe her my life, and I couldn’t take her in. Hell, I had to send Edrik to my in-laws, and they’re racist pricks when it comes to humans.”
After a long moment of silence, Kallad pointed out, “You do know the kid probably wasn’t human, yeah?”
Brawdr pondered the wisdom of flagging up that if his in-laws were pricks about human, they were hardly going to be more accepting of a faintly celestial-looking humanoid with occasional wings. He decided against it, and stuck with, “Not my business what she was, except kind and brave and … well, timely.”
Kallad chewed on his bit of straw for another long, quiet moment before he nodded, conceding the wisdom in that point of view as well. Then he changed the subject, largely out of tact. “So what does this have to do with you teaching the Crestwind girl? Totally different situation there. You hear stories – the Crestwinds are the most stable, balanced parents in the province. Maybe the country. The day they fling their precious little girl off an airship tower is the day I sprout wings and fly.”
“I sent a little girl out with a weapon she was lucky to lift, a bag of gold, and courage for three.” Brawdr heaved himself into the hay wagon at Kallad’s feet. “I think about her sometimes. If she managed. If she even got to the People. Guess you could say it haunts me. The Crestwind girl’s got big plans to shake the dust of her district off her boots soon as she can. So that’s two girls of an age on their own in the world; one by necessity, one by choice. If I couldn’t give the first one the tools she needs to survive out there, I can the second. Paying it forward, maybe.” Then he chuckled. “Besides, bet those two’d run in similar circles, one day. Maybe what I teach Crestwind’ll help that other one, too.”
Kallad, cleric of Istus the Fateweaver, gave a non-committal sort of smile, and said nothing.

Clans of Belari #4
Tumblr media
Clans of Belari #4 Aftershock Comics 2021 Written by Peter Blackie & Rob Blackie Illustrated by Daniel Maine Coloured by Carlos Lopez Lettered by Taylor Esposito    Separated, Te’a and Gummy find themselves on divergent paths. Under pressure from Cluthian, Te’a is forced into carrying out a mission that most pilots wouldn’t even dream of attempting—but Te’a is not “most pilots”.    I have been enjoying this story right up until the last page here.  The last page here ruins everything and by that I mean it just stops, there’s no ending, no resolution, just stops telling the story.  Will there be a volume two?  Will we get the opportunity to see how the aftermath is shown, heck is there even an aftermath?  This has been such a good, interesting and fascinating tale and honestly it needs two more issues, this fitting everything into four issues is for the birds.  Alright now that I have vented that, for now, it’s time to move onto the story here.  This is such a well crafted universe and has such a great night time soap opera feel to it with all these behind the scenes machinations that cause drama and set the stage for what is coming next.  There are a lot of moving parts here that are in motion and they all conspire to really pull all the different players into the same sphere of influence.    I am a big fan of the way that this is being told.  How we see the story & plot development that we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information is extremely well rendered.  The character development that we see through the dialogue, the character interaction as well as how we see them act and react to the situations and circumstances which they encounter does a great job bringing their personalities to the forefront.  The pacing is excellent and as it takes us through the pages revealing more of the story the more we so desperately want to see.     I like how we see this being structured and how the layers within the story continue to emerge, grow, evolve and strengthen.  The layers keep opening up new avenues to explore and whether those are being explored now or later they add all this great depth, dimension and complexity to the story.  The way that we see  everything working together to create the story’s ebb & flow as well as how it moves the story forward is exceptionally well achieved.    The interiors here are really exemplary.  The linework is incredible and how we see the varying weights and techniques being utilised to create this level & quality in the attention to detail is truly outstanding.  How we see backgrounds being utilised to enhance and expand the moments as well as how they work within the composition of the panels brings out the depth perception, sense of scale and the overall sense of size and scope to the story.  The creativity and imagination that we see throughout the book is marvellous and that gateway for instance is utterly gorgeous.  The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a remarkably talented eye for storytelling.  The various hues and tones within the colours being utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work shows a superb understanding of how colour works.       This is a great book, my ranting aside that just goes to show how the guys have been able to get me this invested and engaged in what we've seen over the course of four issues.  That the story is this strong and it involved and that we’ve come to know the characters like we have has been a double edged sword when it comes to a limited series versus an ongoing.  We need more great classic feeling science fiction tales like this on stands.
