To Their Worship, Inquisitor Lavellan: I appreciate your warning regarding Corypheus. Fortunately, my own search has taken me out of the area where the supposed magister is operating, and while I have encountered challenges of my own, they have not involved any weakness related to my Grey Warden abilities. As I have little useful information to offer, please accept the accompanying gifts instead. If, in my quest, I find anything that may be of use to you in your fight against Corypheus, I will send it to you immediately. I have also included a note of a personal nature for Warden Alistair. Please take care of him. Like me, he was instrumental in ending the last Blight. I trust his compassion and his strength above any other's, and I would not go though such effort to overcome our Callings only to lose him to your Inquisition. In closing, I wish you luck. This world of the shemlen is a difficult one for our kind, and I can only imagine the pressure of leading the Inquisition, an organization dedicated to the Chantry, while staying true to the Way of the Three Trees. *(I know Mahariel's clan name was Sabrae, which is obviously different from well, Mahariel so last name isn't indictive of clan for the Dalish depsite a Lavellan Inquisitor being introduced as being "from Clan Lavellan" during their game).

An aged letter from Keeper Marethari of Clan Sabrae to Keeper Ealar of Clan Alerion, dated 9:16 Dragon, found among the latter’s possessions following his death. It is written in Elvhen, strongly formal, with a trembling hand.

Ealar,

The rumors are not false. You have the truth of it. Clan Sabrae is in dire need of magical talent, and the role of First has gone unfilled for far too long.

I wish it were not so, but there are many things I wish. Our late Keeper was with us for over thirty years, and his absence is a wound still keenly felt.

I am of the opinion that Mahariel’s child might yet manifest his father’s abilities. I have been training the child myself, attempting to coax some magic from him. So far my efforts have been fruitless. How my heart breaks for the little one, being brought up without his parents. He is of an age where he must surely see what others have, and what he has not. But if his father’s magic remains within him, it will be like having a piece of Hirael survive in the bitter world.

I have hope. Yet, for the sake of my clan, I must prepare for every outcome. My friend, I am hoping you would aid us in this difficult circumstance.

augh the mahariel origin gets me every time.. the tragedy that could have been so easily prevented, clan sabrae losing two of their young ones, the survivor's guilt that must be felt by mahariel, how they not only lose their best friend, but have to leave their entire life behind

and for what? to go through a ritual likely to kill them, one that even if they survive for now, only lets them live a few more decades on borrowed time? a life in which they are likely to never see their family again?

"How is that any comfort?"

It isn't the answer she wants to give. Not the one she should give, either. Taera is leaving, forever—to die or to live they don't know yet, and with how rarely they get news from human lands they may never know. As First of the clan, Merrill should stand firm like a cliff in the sea and be a comfort. She should be brave, she should be practical, she should offer words of wisdom for the road. At the very least she should be a friend, like Taera's always been for her. A shoulder to cry on. Whatever she needs.

But she feels like a thousand pieces of Merrill all scattered around the aravel. Here's a piece that's crying over Tamlen. There's a piece that's angry at the Keeper. Over there is her guilt over not being there to save them, there in the corner is her fear that she'll be all alone now. She picks one up to soothe it only to drop another. She can't hold herself together for long enough to be anything that she should be.

And so she snaps instead, because the piece she was holding was angry—and she gasps, turns away, hands covering her face as the anger slinks away into its corner, ashamed.

"I'm sorry. I'm sorry—I won't forget you, Taera. I promise." She shatters — the tears come, finally, and she takes her hands from her face to pull Taera into a hug, draw her close. She feels so strong, so solid. Is there really taint in her blood? Is there no way the Keeper can be mistaken? "Or Tamlen", she whispers against her shoulder. "I won't forget him either. Or the mirror—"

She draws a breath. No, she must not forget the mirror, what it did.

"You're right", she says, pulling back, her voice dropping into its lowest register as it steadies. "It's harder to live. That's what we do it. I won't forget that either, and neither must you."

this is a rly interesting question for him! he would *like* to receive dalish rites but believes himself too blighted to safely bury. at the same time he very much does not want to follow the warden tradition of going to the deep roads to die fighting darkspawn bc 1) he hates the deep roads so so much and 2) he's very afraid that he wouldn't be killed before deteriorating to the point of essentially becoming darkspawn himself

i think if he died without/before any cure for the calling he'd want his body to be burned, since there aren't rly any readily available better options; it's also what he had to do with tamlen's body which would feel right to him in a sort of deranged way

What is with Dragon Age and not giving Dalish Clans proper names half the time? I swear, it's like these Inktober prompts exist to make me question my knowledge of this entire series...
