THE GOLD DIGGERS

1919

The Gold Diggers is a three-act play by Avery Hopwood. The original production was produced and staged by David Belasco starring Ina Claire in the lead role of Jerry Lamar.

The rest of the cast included Louella Geer, Bruce McRae, Lilyan Tashman, Paul Draper, Frederick Truesdale, H. Reeves-Smith, Jobyna Howland, Ruth Terry, Pauline Hall, Beverly West, Gladys Feldman, Horace Braham, Louise Galloway, Katherine Walsh, and Sally Tysher.

Tashman, a genuine Ziegfeld star played Trixie and understudied the lead. She also appeared (in a different role) in one of the film adaptations of the play.

Act Three ~ “The Morning After”

The play takes place in Jerry Lamar’s New York City apartment. A wealthy man who is convinced that the chorus girl engaged to his nephew is a "gold digger", who only wants his nephew's money. He asks Jerry Lamar, another chorus girl he knows, to convince his nephew to break off the engagement. Instead she tries to convince him that not all chorus girls are out for money. Unfortunately for her effort, several of her friends demonstrate that they are as money-hungry as feared. Annoyed, Lamar decides to get him drunk and trick him into proposing to her. Her scheme proves harmless when it turns out that they are really are in love.

The play popularized the use of the term "gold digger" to refer to women who seek wealthy partners, as opposed to the earlier usage referring to gold miners.

The title was not changed, although a subtitle (”Dig A Little Deeper”) was later added. Also, the play did not go to the Belasco Theatre, but the Lyceum, also controlled by Mr. Belasco.

The Gold Diggers had its world premiere at Nixon’s Apollo Theatre, on the Boardwalk in Atlantic City NJ, on June 23, 1919. From there it also played the Savoy in Shubert-Belasco in DC, the Savoy in Asbury Park, and the Broadway in Long Branch, after which

"The Gold Diggers will be put away in camphor, so to speak, in order that it may be fresh for the edification of the early autumn arrivals in New York.” ~ BALTIMORE SUN

While in DC, columnist Earle Dorsey disclosed that the original script had Ina Claire doing uncharacteristically ribald humor, which (according to Maestro Belasco) did not suit her. Such gags were therefore re-assigned to another character so ingenue Miss Claire might “do what she does best.”

The play opened on Broadway on September 30, 1919, at the Lyceum Theatre where it was a hit, running 717 performances before going on tour. During the time it was on Broadway, the author had four other plays open and close on the Rialto.

"Vulgar and immoral" ~ THE DRAMA

The play ran in London in 1926 with Tallulah Bankhead in the lead role of Jerry Lamar for 179 performances.

Gold Diggers of Broadway (1929) starring Nancy Welford as Jerry

Gold Diggers of 1933 (1933) starring Ruby Keeler as Polly (aka Jerry)

Painting the Clouds with Sunshine (1951, musical) starring Virginia Mayo as Carol (aka Jerry)

Gold Diggers of 1933 spawned multiple sequels that were not directly based on Hopwood's play: Gold Diggers of 1935, Gold Diggers of 1937, and Gold Diggers in Paris.

The 1929 film played to great success at the Warner Theatre, on the Boardwalk in Atlantic City, which brings Gold Diggers back where they belong!

KFC chicken has always been breaded with flour, salt, pepper, and msg. If they’re not still using msg they’re using today’s equivalent. The “11 herbs and spices” has always been marketing BS. It comes in a bag full of chicken and some bloody water. Bag of dark meat and a bag of white mean. Original is rinsed breaded once and deep fried. Crispy is rinsed breaded and rinsed again and breaded and deep fried. I worked there. That eleven spices and herbs make it taste awful,i hate KFC for that,the best for fried chicken is only to put sweet paprika and salt,maybe a little bit of black pepper.
