On This Day In History
December 5th, 1995: American geochemist Clair Cameron Patterson died.
In addition to being responsible for the current most accurate calculation for Earth's age--4.55 billion years, a number that's been unchallenged since the 1950s--he was a prolific activist responsible for a steep decrease in American exposure to lead pollution. He was largely responsible for banning leaded gasoline and leaded solder (used in food cans).
Patterson suffered severe professional repercussions for his activism from other scientists, supposedly neutral research organizations, and large corporations. After more than a decade of work, his success in creating policy measured showed Americans experienced an 80% drop of lead levels in the blood.

This man is the reason lead isn't in gasoline and paint and pretty much anything anymore. His name is Clair Cameron Patterson. Today is the day he died. Honor his ass and remember: deregulation means putting lead back in shit. Fight against it. Always. Companies want to put it back, they hate that they have to go out of their way to keep people healthy. Don't let them. Ever.

happy clair cameron patterson day to all tumblrites who celebrate 🎉
can't find the original thread but he's a scientist that fought for the removal of lead from gasoline, paint, pipes, and cans. it has lead to an 85% drop in lead levels in children's blood and an decrease in violent crime (as lead exposure leads to increased aggression)

while reading superman comics i ran into this panel of batman with a lead-lined cowl, and it got me thinking.
the comic this is from (adventures of superman #440) has a cover date of may 1988. dr. clair cameron patterson first published findings about the prevalence of lead in gasoline and other parts of common postindustrial life being harmful in 1965, but we only saw legislation passed about leaded gasoline in 1975 (as per wikipedia:)
Starting with the 1975 model year, the United States mandated the use of unleaded gasoline to protect catalytic converters in all new cars.[18] However, Patterson's efforts achieved an accelerated phaseout of lead from all standard automotive gasoline—but not all leaded fuels—in the United States by 1986. By the late 1990s lead levels in the blood of Americans were reported to have dropped by up to 80%.[19] In 1978, Patterson was appointed to a National Research Council panel that acknowledged many of the increases of lead contamination and the need for reductions, but some members argued for more research before recommending action.[20] Patterson expressed his opinions in a 78-page minority report, which argued that control measures in certain sensitive sectors—including all leaded fuels, public water distribution systems, food containers, paints and glazes—should start immediately.[21]
so they definitely would have known lead is a health hazard while making this.. but probably not when it was established that lead everything confounded superman's senses back in precrisis (i assume), so maybe that's a holdover? and also it's very likely that dc just has never thought that hard about these things, simply because lead had been established as the Superman Blocker™ for so long. there is a LOT of lead in these early postcrisis superman comics. the metal men have a Lead Guy, the joker has a bunch of convienent lead coffins to stuff people into, lexcorp everything is lead-lined, buildings in metropolis have lead in them...
which definitely all tracks with like older us city infrastructure Built With Lead In It (and with lex luthor being the way that he is), but still . im actually so curious about the concept of an attitude shift wrt lead infrastructure and lead batcowls, etc., as it relates to increased public health awareness re: lead poisoning. it may be anecdotal, but i feel like in late 90s to 2000s comics, mentions of lead in infrastructure (or costuming) weren't so prevalent? i'll have to pay closer attention as i reread triangle era onwards, i think.
#rimi's comic liveblogging#rimi talks#it's just something to chew on i guess??? no real conclusions to draw but i'm interested in the history of this#also man i didn't know until i went to look it up for this pondering but lead poisoning was a known thing even in ancient rome. wadda hell

"This whole act’s immutably decreed. ’Twas rehearsed by thee and me a billion years before this ocean rolled."
I love this. Both like, how writerly it sounds and also the fact that Ahab is subscribe to the age of Earth being billions of years old over 100 years before Clair Cameron Patterson determined it at 4.55 ± 0.07 billion years.

Doctor Clair Cameron Patterson not only discovered the the true age of the Earth with his research in Lead-dating, but during this process he accidentally discovered the dangers of lead contamination. Then he went “wait, we’re putting this shit in gasoline, cans, paint, etc.” He then began campaigning against lead in everyday products. In particular, he targeted the gasoline industry. You can imagine how that went in the courtroom. He was vilified, excluded, and slandered against but kept pushing for lead to be removed from gasoline. Took decades, but obviously lead was removed from gasoline almost entirely by 1990.

I would recommend that everyone read the Wikipedia page for Thomas Midgley Jr because the way it’s set up is just so scathing. it leads with a quote on how he “had more adverse impact on the atmosphere than any other single organism in Earth's history.” it’s crazy
meanwhile Clair Cameron Patterson’s (the guy who is credited with the removal of lead from gas and can soldering) page leads with how he discovered a much more accurate way of dating the age of the Earth, & his estimated age has been “largely unchallenged” since. the juxtaposition is so funny. fuck that other guy

Sometimes its common that some films comes out without my knowledge, particularly non-Hollywood English language films. This British film was about a wealthy couple from the New York, especially the husband who tries his best to fulfill his seriously ill wife’s dream to be an opera singer. The problem is she’s not any good. Not just him, but everybody who is close to them and once laughed at her, try to understand them and give their support. But not all the occasion seems to remain the same. So on one such a big event, the disaster strikes and how it affects the couple is the rest of the tale to disclose. A very surprising film. I thought it was just a comedy like it brings small smiles on our face, but I laughed out loud on many occasions. This is definitely a right time, because I felt like it was a music and cinematic version of the American presidential candidate Don Trump. Yep, there not much difference, but still this ...
