More Porto
Friday, Feb. 24
Had a plan for the day, headed over to a famous cafe, the Majestic -  the most beautiful cafe in Porto. Actually, it’s on the Top 10 of the most beautiful cafes in the world. It dates back to 1921 under the name of Elite. It’s located on Santa Catarina Street, the main pedestrian walkway in the city.  J.K. Rowling lived in Porto while she wrote Harry Potter & the Sorcerer’s Stone. She was raising her daughter in a small apartment, teaching English, and writing in cafes around the city. After exploring Porto, it’s easy to see the influence of the city in the Harry Potter universe:
The Majestic was just that….majestic, gorgeous cafe where you felt like you needed to be on your best behaviour.  The servers were all decked out, wearing white serving jackets.  Looking at the prices on the menu it was obvious coffee was all that I was having.  I did finally get some whipping cream for my coffee…of course it was already whipped…basically an espresso and a cup of whip cream.  Apparently there was a time when many writers would hang out at the Majestic, drinking coffee and what else…writing - I would expect that the prices were much less back in the day, at 4.50 euros for a coffee,  a little steep for a starving artist.
I walked up and down Santa Catarina Street as it is supposed to be a good place to shop - I went into a shoe store and tried on a pair of boots. As soon as it was apparent I wasn’t going to purchase them the clerk was almost rude.  I came across a shopping mall and thought I’d check it out…on the top floor they had shops that had the facade of the cityCarrying on with my exploration I came across the Porto Cathedral.  I opted to not pay again to see the inside, how many churches can a girl go into?  It would seem a lot. The view from the square out front of the cathedral was fantastic, I continued to make my way down to the river and to fully see the Cais da Ribeira, another UNESCO site.
The small strip was more charming than I’d expected, a kind of dilapidated yet quaint look about the buildings that made them quite beautiful.  Below the homes were restaurants and shops and vendors with stalls selling their wares.  I walked across the famous Dom Luis I Bridge, the iconic metal bridge that crosses the Douro, to the other side of the river.  Many more vendors were lined up along the water…the funnest kind of shopping.  I poked my nose in the port shops, many offered tastings but I didn’t feel comfortable with just myself and as well, likely not purchasing a bottle.  I wandered the streets a bit but didn’t find much of interest.  Did pick up a bread item to eat for later and some fruit. Making my way back to the other side, chose a bench to sit down on and pulled out my bread item.  No sooner had I taken the first bite when over my shoulder came a blur of something ripping at my bread.  I couldn’t believe it!  A bloody seagull had flown at me…I stood up to move away and then I felt flapping wings at my head, it was hovering over me!  I cursed the buggar and ran off.  I sat elsewhere and very carefully took out my sandwich for a few more bites.  It turned out to be awful tasting,  but there was no way the seagulls were getting it now, so I made sure to dispose of the rest in a waste can out of their reach - I knew why I never liked birds.
There was one church I had read about that was a must seethe Church of São Francisco, so off I went.  I had come across it the day before but the exterior was non descript and I passed it by.  Today I paid my 4 euros and went inside.  The guard at the entrance was sure to state ‘no photos’.  Of course I’m not one who listens well….I carefully snuck a few photos, how could I not?!!  The interior was all gold, something like over 400 kgs of gold was used.  After the church I buzzed through the museum, not finding much of interest and too impatient to read all the captions I went back outside.  It was a spectacular sunny day and I wanted to enjoy every minute of it.  I made my way over to the Jardins do Palácio de Cristal; elegant Victorian gardens, by this time I’d walked quite a ways and found a bench in the gardens to sit at and take in the view of the river.  After some time, I made my way back towards my flat and came across another great street for shopping.  Here I needed a pick me up…an espresso and of course pastel de nada for only…1.50 euros - awesome!!
Shopping always works up a thirst, popped into another quaint place for a glass of beer and soak up the remainder of the sun.  I returned to this spot several times, with beer being  1 euro why not! Back at the flat I checked my strata to see that I’d walked  over 18 km that day - no wonder I was tired!  Went out to find some dinner, didn’t have energy to assess multiple restaurants so the steak burger place down the street that seemed really popular was my destination.  Turned out to be a great burger (made from steak) and fries for 4.95 euros - the place was packed and I managed to scrounge a seat.  Feeling full of food and beer I opted for another night walk  of 4 km before heading back for the night.
