Employers desire foreign workers who are accustomed to the hazardous work sites of industrial construction; in particular, they specifically solicit migrants who do not have a history of labor organizing within SWANA. In response, labor brokerage firms brand themselves as offering migrant workers who are deferential. Often, labor brokers conflate the category of South Asian with docility; [...] as inherently passive, disciplined, and, most important, unfettered by volatile working conditions. "We say quality, they [U.S. employers] say seasoned. We both know what it means. Workers who are not going to quit, not going to run away in the foreign country and do as they are told.” [...]
For migrants, the U.S. oil industry presents a rare chance to apply their existing skill set in a country with options for permanent residency and sponsorship of family members. Migrants wish to find an end to their temporary worker status; they imagine the United States as a liberal economy in which labor standards are enforced and there are opportunities for citizenship and building a life for their family. [...] What brokers fail to explain is that South Asian migrants are being recruited as guest workers. Migrants will not have access to U.S. citizenship or visas for family members; in fact, their employment status will be quite similar to their SWANA migration.
While nations such as the Philippines have both state-mandated and independent migrant rights agencies, the Indian government has minimal avenues for worker protection. These are limited to hotlines for reporting abusive foreign employers and Indian consulates located in a few select countries of the SWANA region. [... Brokers] emphasize the docility of Indian migrants in comparison to the disruptive tendencies of other Asian migrant workers. [...] “Some of these Filipino men you see make a lot of trouble in the Arab countries. Even their women, who work as maids and such, lash out. The employer says one wrong thing and the workers get the whole country [the Philippines] on the street. [...] But you don’t see our people creating a tamasha [spectacle] overseas.” [...] Just as Filipinx migrants are racialized to be undisciplined labor, Indian brokers construct divisions within the South Asian workforce to promote the primacy of their own firms. In particular, Pakistani workers are racialized as an abrasive population.
[...] While the public image of the South Asian American community remains as model minorities, presumed to be primarily upwardly mobile professionals, the global reality of the population is quite to the contrary. [...] From the historic colonial routes initiated by British occupation of South Asia to the emergence of energy markets within the countries of SWANA, migrants have been recruited to build industries by contributing their labor to construction projects. Within the last decade, these South Asian migrants, with experience in the SWANA oil industry, have been actively solicited as guest workers into the energy sector of the United States. The growth of hydraulic fracturing has opened new territory for oil extraction; capitalizing on the potential market are numerous stakeholders who have invested in industrial construction projects across the southwestern United States. The solicitation of South Asian construction workers is not coincidental. [...] Kartik, a globally competitive firm’s broker, explains the connection of Indian labor to practices of the past. “You know we come from a long history of working in foreign lands. Even the British used to send us to Africa and the Arab regions to work in the mines and oil fields. It’s part of our history.”
Seasoning Labor: Contemporary South Asian Migrations and the Racialization of Immigrant Workers, Saunjuhi Verma in the Journal of Asian American Studies

what if König has a wifey that’s just obsessed with a specific artist!! she gets hyped when new albums are released, cries listening to their sad songs, can ramble for hours about their whole career progression and make in depth lyric analysis.
And who would do ANYTHING to see their favourite artist performing live. Literally anything. Like, 100% willing to take part in könig’s deepest, darkest fantasies just as long as he gets her tickets to the latest tour (and maybe some tour merch lol)
Would he be jealous of wifey being so invested in someone else or would he take advantage of her obsession to endear her to him?
This can go two ways!! If the wifey is obsessed with a band/a solo singer who is a female, Konig wouldn't really mind too much. He will buy you those expensive tickets if they are touring in Europe(he doesn't want you to go too far away from him, and the cross-continental flights are too much trouble even with his money and citizenship), will give you his card to buy some merch and honestly wouldn't mind you blasting the songs in the house. He has Opinions about the music he likes - mostly German hard rock, obvi, he was raised on this stuff, at first as a rebellion, and later came to really embrace it, but he won't mind you and your music tastes. Even if it's something basic like Taylor Swift or Lana Del Rey or Mitski, etc, he wouldn't honestly mind. Would like you to listen to his music, but if anything, your obsession with some girlie pop female singer only fuels his adoration for you. You're so cute and obsessive, he can't have enough!! If you like a band or a solo singer that is a man...oh boy. Konig googles the easiest way to kill a celebrity, preferably blasting the whole stage altogether. He knows that his being jealous of some singer is ridiculous...he also doesn't care. He tries to see the comparison between him and the guy you're obsessed with. 90% chance that they don't look alike at all - and it makes him worried, because what if you were to pursue someone like your favorite band boy?? he won't allow you to go to the concert, oh no, these places are too dangerous!! Too many people and too much possibility of mass attack or targeted assassination, you need to stay home! He won't falter even with your puppy eyes, his desire to keep you with him is too much( You'd have to promise you're definitely not leaving Konig, you just like the music and want to support your favorite artist...he will be so obnoxious and rude, not even realizing it - he is blasting your music tastes and probably leaving you crying after( your tears are the only thing that will kinda make him reconsider - but still, no concerts. Maybe a few posters and special edition disks, but please don't forget about your husband, he needs you to tell him how in love you are with him!! If that would mean sucking his cock like a good girl and stopping whining when he asks for cockwarming while he is playing or watching TV...you want those special merch thingies, right? And maybe, if you're good enough and play with your ass a little, he might consider buying a ticket...

XU LILI '01 / B. BEIJING, RAISED IN LA .
hellooooooo ~ this is nini again with a second character who's definitely a whole 180 approach from jino lol. took me a while to get an intro up because end of the year things kept me busy ! and i was also still trying to figure out how best to explain little miss lili here ~ but nevertheless, we're here now and down below you can get a good idea of this gal who is both bite and bark and will very much prove it !!! but i promise she can be nice even if it comes off haughty and self-serving so please like if you'd like to plot ♡
TL;DR signed jul. 2020, female senior morning group, female dorm a; self-serving, self-absorbed and overly self-concious? yet deep, deep, deep down she has a heart of gold? just got to dig deep enough underneath all her generational trauma lol
BACKGROUND
born li yifei, her name was legally changed to xu yifei when she got adopted by her grandmother / it was further changed when she gained dual citizenship through her grandmother when she moved her to los angeles -> now she goes by xu lili
her parents were a love that burned hot but burned out fast kind of relationship
also didn't help that her dad and mom were from starkly different social brackets that when her grandmother strongly opposed the marriage, her mother got disowned and left to be with her husband
but when the marriage ultimately fell apart, in a last ditch effort, they had lili
for a while it worked until the pains of motherhood, marriage and poverty got too much and when she turned 5, her parents divorced: her mother got her and her father got his freedom back — apparently that meant never seeing lili again, too
a year after her divorce, her mother met a new man (richer, older) and started a new family alongside that man’s children from a prev. marriage. by the time she was 7, lili was brought back to her grandmother’s and like her father, that would be the last she’d see of her mother
being adopted by her grandmother was a start to a new life, adapting to a new environment and learning that love wasn’t just given: it was earned
her grandmother was the owner of a real estate investment / development group; a woman of high expectations and most of all, showed love like how she did business: she expected results in return for her nurture
in the case of lili: her grandmother enrolled her into all the best programs, nurtured her love for performing, and expected the excellence that proceeded from the investment
but excellence can only go so far with natural talent, lili had the talent but in comparison to her peers, she didn’t have the it needed to take her far, something she learns when she receives no offers to continue her ballet career
( 2017 ) instead, she looks elsewhere to continue her love, to find adoration elsewhere is null when her grandmother is pressuring her for results: she auditions for a company in la and passes; suddenly she’s on a flight to korea and training to debut in a girl group of some unknown company
just when she was about to debut, her grandmother ends up sick and she went home when she was supposed to be practicing/preparing for debut
( 2020 ) she ends up getting dropped from the debut lineup upon return (and still has the audacity to be sad about it) ~
she joins lgc in jul. 2020 after getting dropped from debut and consequently the label
TIDBITS
much prefers to be called lili
was quiet and withdrawn as a kid because of her parental troubles, only was able to really fully express herself through performing
because of that she was able to come out of her shell, however, it was falsified by the desperate need of validation and her inherent ego that waged a war with her insecurities
has imposter syndrome, so she on the low sabotages herself
such as when she was supposed to debut, she knew what was at stake but still left -> her grandmother didn’t even appreciate her visiting when she was sick, instead she was told to go back to korea and finish what she started
headstrong and stubborn, her grandmother had brought her up to say what was on her mind and not care about others -> it only made her selfish and self-serving
a bit of a tsundere, if you squint but i swear it’s there, she’s not used to people being overly affectionate to her and is very rarely affectionate; will be the one to give an awkward shoulder pat when comforting
honestly because of her parents she doesn't believe in love, thinks it's superficial, thinks lust is also dumb but what can a girl do when she has needs 💅 might also think she's hard to love / doesn't deserve it because of her trauma from her parents and her grandmother
is 100% right, always, even when she is 100% wrong — will argue why she’s right
she likes being as she says ~ playful ~ and riling people up and causing friction, call it what you will but i think it’s the attention-seeker in her thinking that even if she can’t get people to like her, if they’re irritated, that means they have to be thinking about her still? right ???
ambitious to a fault, she will do what she needs to do to get where she wants to, even if that means burning some bridges
her grandmother had taught her to learn to control her emotions, but what can we say, she’s an open book and if she’s not on a default rbf — she’s giving face
v relationship phobe - more or less will keep one at arms’ length; the type to make you think you’re close but you don’t really know much about her
will get out of everything and anything but saying she doesn’t speak korean / can’t understand what you’re saying
does not like pity, will not stand to be pitied
smokes like a chimney, we know its bad !!! but girl is stressed !!! and when she’s stressed !! she smokes !!
vain, superficial and far too outgoing and confrontational for her own good (can’t be me lmfao) and will 100% tell you what’s on her mind without prompt
she is an enabler, she will enable you 100% to make bad choices
she only cares about her grandmother really because it’s her validation she seeks the most but lbr she seeks validation everywhere in everyone and that’s kind of her ruin because she also has foot in her mouth syndrome and a temper 😵💫
PLOT HOLES
⤷ honestly give me everything ! we want drama, friction ! friends who try to dip deep, friends who make her angry ! friends who are obviously surface friends but want to be more ! friends who care but are annoyed with lili's aloof attitude ! friends who are no longer friends ! rivals !!!!! i'll take everything and anything anyone comes up with
NOTE
⤷ also i should have her profile with a proper bio finished soon ~ sorry about that xx

World Running Down, by Al Hess
⭐⭐⭐⭐ 1/2
In a post-apocalyptic future, only the fortunate can attain citizenship in Salt Lake City, a privilege that affords them luxuries such as a safe place to stay, plenty to eat, and access to medical care. Valentine, a trans man who scrapes by working salvage jobs, is not one of the fortunate — that is, until a handsome android named Osric arrives bearing a proposal. It's a tempting offer: one last job in exchange for citizenship, with all that entails, including access to hormone treatments. But there's more to the job — not to mention the android — than first meets the eye. With the safety of emerging consciousnesses at stake, can Valentine and Osric make the right choices, even if it means sacrificing everything they desire?
I don't go for main-plot romantic books too often, but I'm glad I made this exception. Both Valentine and Osric were wonderful characters in complicated situations, and I enjoyed watching them fumble around with each other. Yes, this is that kind of book: light on the steam, and heavy on the awkward discovery. And it's well-justified awkwardness, given that one of the heroes is an AI who only recently had to use a physical body. While I'm aware comparisons of transgender people with robots isn't everyone's cup of tea, it's worth noting that the author is himself a trans man, and it's more nuanced than it might sound at first glance. For example, Osric experiences dysphoria from his physical form not being like the distributed consciousness he'd previously inhabited; the fact that his body is artificial/non-human isn't the point of comparison.
One of the things I loved the most about this book was the setting's vibe. It has a wonderful futuristic-yet-retro vibe that reminds me a bit of the Fallout universe(in fact, I wonder if the main character's name isn't a reference to Nick Valentine, from Fallout 4), except throwing back to a time that's a little earlier than the atomic age. I also liked the way the Mormon community the group encounters was used in this story. As someone who has known LGBTQ Mormons, I'm aware the situation isn't quite as black and white as many people might think, and I appreciated this take on what one offshoot community might look like in the future.
As a bonus, Al Hess is a talented artist. In addition to painting the cover of the book, he drew portraits of many of the main and secondary characters. Two — Valentine and Osric — are included at the front of the book, and the rest can be found on his website.
My biggest gripe with the book is that some plot threads seemed to be left dangling. The most egregious was the part about the mutant animals, which got built up and then just dropped. I don't care how sweet it is when our two leads kiss, I wanna know what was up with the mad science! But if you're reading primarily for the romance and characters, you shouldn't have any issues with this, as I feel that half of the plot was wrapped up very nicely. I can't promise you won't yell at the characters and pitch the book across the room, however, but isn't that just a sign of being invested in a good drama?

ll Latinos should fear Trump’s mass deportation vow
Immigration is the defining issue for Donald Trump.
Latino immigrants are the main target.
But all of us Latinos/Hispanics will be affected when Trump brings back the 1954 Eisenhower “Operation Wetback” raids where Mexican immigrants, and even Mexican Americans, were brutally rounded up and sent to Mexico.
Trump has publicly praised Eisenhower and proclaims that his militaristic removal of unauthorized immigrants will be the largest in American history.
If you research Eisenhower’s “Operation Wetback,” you will learn that millions of Mexicans and many American Hispanic citizens were sent to Mexico under barbarous processes.
Trump wants to conduct massive raids of churches, schools, hospitals, construction sites, farms, restaurants or other places where Hispanics congregate.
He will use the military and “deputize” local law enforcement personnel to conduct these roundups.
If you cannot prove citizenship, you will be placed in “open air” detention camps awaiting deportation. (Project 2025).
Incredibly, many Latinos are voting for Trump, either agreeing with his “roundup” policy or believing it won’t affect them.
Really?
What will stop an armed military trooper from accosting your grandmother, uncle, nephew or other relative and asking them for proof of citizenship?
Under “Operation Wetback,” both Mexicans and American Latinos were asked for birth certificates because driver licenses and Social Security cards were held by many undocumented individuals and not deemed sufficient evidence of legal citizenship.
That’s still the case today.
Do you want your friends and relatives exposed to this abuse?
Think of the families you know which will be destroyed.
Focus on the half a million DACA “Dreamers” who have been “Americanized” and are now working to strengthen our economy but who will be uprooted.
If you are worried about increased food, gas, or other service costs, you will be paying higher prices when millions of workers in agriculture, dairy, energy or construction are rounded up and deported.
And the nearly $100 billion in federal, state and local taxes paid by undocumented workers will evaporate and guess who will fill the gap.
A recent CBS News analysis concluded that that a mass deportation could cost $14.6-$19.6 billion for every million individuals deported or $40-$54 billion to deport 11 million undocumented migrants.
Those are your tax dollars which could be invested in education or other more urgent needs.
Whether you are a Latino/Hispanic like me (with my family’s centuries-old presence in these lands) or a first- or second-generation American Latino, we will be under attack as never before.
The recent verbal assault by an Anglo individual yelling epithets at me and telling me to “go back to Mexico” or the racially motivated Walmart slaughter of Hispanics in El Paso, will pale in comparison to what Trump will do.
In this poisonous environment, Latinos will be attacked for speaking Spanish in public.
Employers will be reluctant to hire someone “appearing” to be an immigrant.
A pall of discrimination, hate and worry will fall on brown-skinned Americans.
According to Trump, brownskinned immigrants are “rapists and killers” and “poisoning the blood of America.”
And many believe him.
I know that my friends and relatives along the Texas-Mexico border are frustrated with the surge of migrants crossing the Brownsville, Laredo and El Paso borders.
I know because I was born in Laredo, grew up in Brownsville and practiced law in El Paso.
I have many friends and relatives living along the border.
But another “Operation Wetback” is not the answer.
Do my fellow Latinos/Hispanics want to see their family members stopped randomly on the streets or as they emerge from church or work or a restaurant and asked by an armed official for proof of citizenship?
Will there be physical resistance or confrontations?
The real solution to our immigration problem is updating our immigration laws just as a group of bipartisan Congressmen tried to do this year – until Trump killed the bill.
The last time Congress dramatically amended our immigration laws was in 1986 when President Reagan signed the Immigration Reform and Control Act.
It provided fines and jail terms for employers who violated the law and offered amnesty for several million individuals who had lived in the U.S. for four years.
That law is 38 years old and obviously must be reformed as the Biden/Harris administration has tried to do.
My message to fellow Latinos/Hispanics:
Don’t be naive about Donald Trump’s “Operation Wetback” and live to regret it.

Electricity is the world’s most important and fastest-growing form of energy. It is also the most difficult form of energy to supply reliably.
Many of the world’s most pressing challenges are tied directly to electricity, including carbon dioxide emissions, women’s rights, and poverty reduction. The electricity sector matters to climate change efforts because it is the single biggest source of global CO2 emissions.Electricity matters because it is one of the world’s biggest industries. Global electricity sales exceed $4.5 trillion per year. That means that the electricity sector generates more revenue per year than global automobile manufacturing, which generated about $3 trillion in 2022. Furthermore, electricity-related investment is the biggest portion of global energy spending. This year, the International Energy Agency (“IEA”) expects that global spending on the power sector, including investment in renewables, nuclear, hydrocarbons, grids, and batteries, will total $1.2 trillion. By comparison, spending on hydrocarbons—coal, oil, and natural gas—will total about $950 billion.
Electricity matters because it is the ultimate poverty killer. No matter where you look, as electricity use has increased, so has economic growth. Having electricity does not guarantee wealth. But its absence almost always means poverty. Indeed, electricity and economic growth go hand in hand. Electricity spurs economic activity, and economic growth spurs electricity use. Westerners take electricity for granted. But nearly everything we touch—almost everything we read, eat, or wear—has in one way or another been electrified.

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins
Note: this is the prequel to the Hunger Games series. If you're invested you may not want to read this review before reading the book!
In his last scene before returning to the Capitol, Coriolanus dives into the remote lake. His mother's palette and his photographs are destroyed by the water, but he is surprised to find that his father's compass still works. He trashes the ruined items, meanwhile rejecting the legacy of gentleness his mother's token represented and the relationships represented in the photos. With only his father's inherited (literal and figurative) compass left to guide him, he returns to the Capitol and embraces his father's coldness.
I was really excited for this. I trust Suzanne Collins and I wasn't disappointed! Often a prequel can't compete with the originals, but it didn't feel like she was retconning important details; she added interesting background, and in some ways the sequel seemed planned. Tigris especially was given a background. I had already reread the trilogy earlier this year but had to read them again after this.
Snow is a great unreliable narrator. At first I was disappointed that the contestants in the 10th Hunger Games were not fleshed out. They seemed almost animalistic, dehumanized. But that's because this is Snow's perspective. We know what kind of person he is destined to become; he has to someday be the President Snow we see in the trilogy. Looking back to the trilogy, we can draw comparisons between the protagonists. Katniss empathizes with the other tributes; even when she attempts to dehumanize them so that she call kill them, she describes their traits and backgrounds and feels guilt. The reader of Ballad doesn't know who the the 10th Hunger Games tributes are beyond their violent acts because Snow doesn't care; Katniss identifies with the other 74th and 75th Hunger Games tributes and knows they are not her true enemy. Katniss and Corio both grew up poor and hungry, but Corio is unable to identify with others or see his problems as structural because he views himself as separate from and better than people outside his sociopolitical bubble. His skill as a manipulator is shown immediately, but at times he edges toward the sympathetic. However, the more he interacts with Lucy Gray, the more we see that he dehumanizes her as well. I feared at some points that this book might follow a pattern of blaming a woman who breaks the man's heart for his loss of character. However, it soon became clear that his way of speaking about Lucy Gray was written very intentionally. The first time he refers to her as "his", it's plausible he's speaking only in the terms of the Capitol. Later, he speaks of her being unequivocally his, and of owning her. He does not really like anything about her. I felt dread as the book progressed.
Snow maintains his worthiness above people born into "lesser" families, most especially those of the districts. He can only convince himself of Lucy Gray's worth by believing she is not truly "of the districts". This of course is a farce, as no one is intrinsically district or Capitol, and this belief in her worth deteriorates over time. He essentializes Capitol vs district and Panem citizenship; the Covey is not "really" district 12 because they previously were travellers. However, district is determined by the Capitol, which suppresses human movement and cultural expression. Everyone's ancestors were something before they were Capitol / district. To Snow, "District 12" and "Capitol" are both intrinsic states which indicate different levels of worthiness, rather than incidental circumstance of birth.
At no point does Snow come to respect the Plinths. At no point does he truly care about others. When he realizes what Tigress, only two years his elder, may have sacrificed for him --endured a trauma for him -- he decides he doesn't want to know about it. She can bear to experience it, but he can't even bear to take some of the burden by listening. The presumed murder of Lucy Gray is presented as nothing more than an inevitable tragedy at the hands of a man who could not be satisfied without conplete power and control.
Snow's characterization brings home the political message at the core of the series. A large portion of the book is his internal experience, through which we see a man not unlike powerful men in modern America. His struggle and life experience do not inevitably make him evil; his active decisions and mentality do.
Overall, I enjoyed it. I hope Collins writes more (in other series!). It didn't fully have the pull of the original trilogy but kept me engaged and interested, and appropriately haunted. I read it a few weeks ago and am still thinking about it.
Some miscellaneous thoughts:
• At two separate times, I thought Coriolanus would be left in the arena to teach him and the people a lesson that even the Capitol has to comply. First, I thought the bombs were set by the Capitol and meant to start the Hunger Games with all the contestants and mentors present. Then I thought he and Sejanus would be left to battle it out after sneaking in. I was interested in the development but must've been misreading where the plot was led. Just a sidenote.
• Built into the original trilogy is commentary on sex, class, and race; an analysis of racism is missing from this book. I wanted a deeper analysis of colonization when the Covey was discussed and I was surprised to see racial dynamics that are absolutely an issue in-universe ignored while in the perspective of a man who will once day be responsible for the structural propogation if it; it was so severe by the 74th Hunger Games that the omission seems glaring.
• At what point did Collins decide she would write this, and did she have Snow's background already in mind at the time she wrote the first books?
• What inspired the Covey? Given that racist legacies are written into the original trilogy and the canon is a commentary and representation of issues Collins is concerned about, I wonder about it and its implications but don't know enough. District 12 is settled on mines but the Covey is said to be travelers, considered outsiders. Collins *did* show the suppression of the Covey and the attempt to homogenize the culture, and the absurdity of District citizenship being seen as intrinsic. I just wanted more, I don't know how much of a real criticism this is, I just wanted more.
• If I recall right, neither district 12 Hunger Games victors are discussed by Katniss's time; both histories have been erased. It fits in so well with the originals.
• What specifically is said about the songs sung by the Covey, especially The Hanging Tree? How does context change the song's interpretation?

The Intersection Between The Slow Fashion Movement & Digital Citizenship (week 7)
When referring to the online media landscape, digital citizenship encompasses a range of user behaviours, ranging from proactive and positive elements to more negative behaviour. In relation to the slow fashion movement, digital citizenship includes engaging respectfully with others as a good corporate citizen, and the responsibility of content creators to produce meaningful and entertaining content, whilst considering the potential impacts their habits and influence may have on others and the environment.
The International Institute for Sustainable Development defines sustainable fashion as “goods and services that respond to basic needs and bring a better quality of life, while minimising the use of natural resources, toxic materials, emissions of waste and pollutants over the life-cycle” (IISD 2015). This means that slow fashion is focused on promoting more eco-friendly and conscious shopping habits to reduce our impact on the planet. For instance, buying second hand or ‘thrifting’ and supporting fashion labels that are transparent about their ethical supply chains, using natural, recycled or up-cycled materials and supporting local designers and artists when developing and producing their clothing collections. Although the slow fashion movement has become more well known since it has reached #trending status on social media, this isn’t an entirely new movement, and can be traced back to the counter culture of the 1960s and anti-fur campaigns during the 1990s and early 2000s (Lai et al 2017, p. 81).
For the purpose of this analysis, I will refer to activism in the 21st century as the ‘second wave’ of the slow fashion movement. The collapse of the Rana Plaza, an eight-story building tragically killing 1,138 garment workers and in excess of 2,000 fatal injuries, in Dhaka in 2014 was a pivotal moment in the fashion industry (Parven 2014). This tragic incident emphasised the suffering of employees in the conventional textile industry, and raises the point that “compassion should play a significant role in sustainable fashion consumption” (Geiger & Keller 2017, p. 1124). Therefore, this was arguably one of the greatest public outcries for more transparency within fashion supply chains for security and ethical trading practices. Similarly, the release of ‘The True Cost’ documentary, directed by filmmaker Andrew Morgan in 2015 was another influential moment in the slow fashion movement. This shocking exposé of the dirty secrets of the global fashion industry highlights the true human cost of the fast-fashion retailers, and ultimately poses the question, who really pays the price for our clothing? This creates a fascinating juxtaposition between the extreme poverty and poor working conditions of the employees working for these big brands, in comparison to the glamorous models and advertising campaigns, which encourage wealthy consumers to invest in their luxury clothes. Interestingly, many activists and influencers in the slow fashion movement have described this groundbreaking documentary as a pivotal and significant catalyst towards their journey towards more ethical and conscious consumerism and overall approach to fashion.
Social media arguably has both positive and negative impacts on consumerism and the slow fashion movement. The most prominent damaging example are the extremely popular clothing ‘haul’ videos created by YouTubers and influencers, which promote regular shopping trips and materialism to their online audience. However, aside from the clear negative aspects, social media platforms, particularly YouTube and Instagram, have offered both consumers and producers of fashion a highly effective platform and exciting digital space to ‘spread the word’. This has ultimately fostered the development of digital communities that are passionate about and interested in the slow fashion movement, ethical labels and conscious consumerism. Some famous slow fashion activists and content creators include the well-known Tiffany Ferguson, Kirsten Leo, Venetia La Manna, and some of my personal favourites, Australian-based Hannah Heading, Clare Press and Unmaterial Girl. Other positive acts of digital citizenship encouraged by digital communities include the popular ‘capsule wardrobe’ movement, the ‘10x10 challenge’, originally created by style bloggers, Lee of Style Bee and Caroline of Un-Fancy; and the #createorrenew and #capsuleconversation hashtag publics created by Danice M Tay, a Toronto-based slow fashion and sustainable living blogger.
Therefore, it is clear that there is a powerful connection between the slow fashion movement and digital citizenship, which is highlighted through the influence of slow fashion online activists and the rise of digital communities within the eco-fashion space.
