February 25, 2024 - Black-lored Cisticola (Cisticola nigriloris) These cisticolas are found in mountain grasslands, marshes, and along the edges of forests and streams in southern Tanzania, northeastern Zambia, and northern Malawi. They feed primarily on insects, foraging in pairs or small groups and often joining mixed-species flocks. Breeding from November to April, they build large ball-shaped nests with side entrances from dry grass and spiderwebs and line them with grass seed heads, plant down, and sometimes other materials. Females lay clutches of two to four eggs.

Where there is smoke there is fire
Spotted Harrier, Brown Falcon, Richmond, NSW
’While pulled over on the side of the road, I was very lucky to witness this epic fight between a spotted harrier and a brown falcon. The harrier was flying slowly across the field, trying to conceal a golden-headed cisticola it had just captured, when the falcon showed up with thievery in mind.’

many birds have very good names. tufted titmouse, kittiwake, yellow-bellied sapsucker, zitting cisticola...nature is beautiful <3
also fond of names that tell u what the bird does: woodpecker, wagtail, dipper, sapsucker (again), warbler etc
#sam.txt#the cisticola is also called the streaked fantail warbler which is good but 'zitting cisticola' just has a great ring to it#also shoutout to some good non-bird names: mudpuppy & mudskipper#also variegated mud-loving beetle. heard abt this one in a lab & i was enamoured by the name. i too am mud-loving <3
