(starwars hard and now is when I confess to having not watched the prequels in anything resembling a proper order, and also not since like. When they came out. Cisco had no sooner landed through the breach on his latest whirwind tour of the new-and-improved Multiverse that he'd realized exactly where he was. And when he was. After the last trip had dropped him in an England full of weird abominations and a creepy institute that wanted to control anyone  even a little Psychic, Joe had insisted on teaching him how to use a gun( even though he already knew) and made him promise to always take something for defense. 

Jedi-slash-Sith or not, the two people in the room were ready for a blaster's bolt or a Lightsaber, not what Cisco had in his belt.  And in all fairness, it was hard to say his shooting was instant. He waited until he recognized the speech  ol' Palps was giving, and Reacted Accordingly.

“I super did, yup." Cisco wondered if he should tread slightly more cautiously, and decided not to. He could always breach out, if he had to.

And oh, that was not calming him down. God, interfering was a lot easier when it was fictional.

It wasn’t even that much of a lie.

“Right,” Cisco said, very deliberately not handing over his gun. “As much as I’d love to talk to them, I am needed elsewhere. So. Talk to your wife.” Shit, what advice should he give? The story was already way off the rails, and it was a stretch to think the kid might take his advice anyways...

Out came the Lightsaber. Cisco decided to dip. He could always check back later, just in case. Maybe bring an actual doctor with experience in complicated pregnancies along.

financially i understand the cw's decision to put heatwave and captain cold on legends of tomorrow (fan favourites so you pull an audience of people who want to see them get up to time travel shenanigans, plus the pull of people who know dom and wentworth from prison break) but creatively nothing makes me angrier. taking two of the most prolific members of the flash's rogues gallery and putting them on a time ship instead of you know. fucking fighting the flash. is a CRAZY choice and if i was on the writing team for the flash when that happened i'd be killing

This is old news for fans of the CWs the flash and presumably the rest of the extended arrowverse but this fucking crisis on earth x crossover across 4 shows having the WEDDING of TWO MAIN CHARACTERS that has had a season and a half of build up and a PROPOSAL of two DIFFERENT main characters from a DIFFERENT show all in SUPERGIRL. OF ALL PLACES. Which none of those 4 characters are from. Is INFURIATING!!!!!!

I bought the fucking DVD. I bought the goddamn DVD of season 4 of The Flash so I could watch all of the events of season 4 of The Flash and the important things that happened to the people in season 4 of The Flash such as. Say. Getting fucking married. So I watch season 4 episode 6 of The Flash and they say "next episode we are going to get married :)". And then I click on episode 7 and it is called Crisis on Earth X part 3 and I go that's weird. Well maybe this is just where The Flash joins the crossover. During their wedding. Because it would be crazy for them not to put the wedding of two main characters including THE titular Flash on the DVD. And Barry's cheerful little voice goes "previously on Crisis of Earth X" and it shows me a clip of their wedding.

So I go. Fuck you, for one. And for two okay I guess I will find???? Supergirl?? (ew) and watch them get married :3. And find that Supergirl is only streaming on fucking. NowTV. because nobody wants to watch Supergirl. To which I obviously don't have a subscription. So I am reduced to looking up "Barry and Iris wedding" on YouTube dot com of which there are only two scenes. Neither of which feature Cisco for more than a brief cut to him as best man. So what's even the point.

Anyway now I'm watching the DVD part 3 and I am once again asking where is Cisco. Why am I seeing conflicts between Supergirl's sister and (?) A guy from Legends? Or maybe he's a new guy from Earth X? And then cutting from them to an old guy and the guy who had to ask what a pink triangle represented on a human person in a concentration camp (jesus christ?????? Why are they tackling this?????????). And THEN to MORE people from different shows. I haven't seen someone from the Flash for 5 scenes in a row let alone had them be a main character in the scene. Where are MY friends from THE FLASH. The Flash, the show I bought the DVD for!!!! SO I COULD WATCH THE FLASH!!!

Like surely. The appeal of crossovers are to show "here is how the people you already like hang out with people from other shows you either already like, or could like, if you give it a chance". This isn't letting me get to see any of that.

It is nice to see Snart again though. And oh he's a man loving man?? that's nice. Why did they make this like this. Why didn't they put all the episodes on my DVD 😭

I think OP makes a really good point: choose your battles.

Until last year, I worked at a small cybersecurity company, editing and writing reports. I edited maybe 100 a month (at a minimum), and technically they were for customers but the text was legally owned by my former employers. I was there for about 2 years.

No surprise where this is going: early last year I started hearing the C-suite hyping up AI. End of June, they laid off roughly 1/3 of the company, including the entire Tech Writing staff (me and another doing reports, and 2 doing platform docs). They cited financial stuff, it wasn't them replacing me with an AI.

But, a few months later I learned that they're training an AI to pre-write the reports. Again, not technically replacing me with an AI (although I would be surprised to learn they didn't think they still need me). I learned this because they brought me back on, part-time contracting, editing their more complex reports, so I'm in their Slack again.

I mention all this because it's how AI labor theft is going to look; it's not my former employers (although we did get done dirty), it's the AI industry.

So, to OP's point: I have to choose my battles. When I was an employee, I raised my concerns. I explained that the AI reports would be factually incorrect because they can't fact check, that it would create a lot more work for whoever was editing the reports. I told my manager (who I still trust) I was concerned about the prospect of being laid off if they put AI projects in place. I wrote about AI and labor issues in the anonymous staff surveys.

Now that I'm on contract, I have a lot less I can do. I can't get them to stop using my work to train my replacement robot. I can ask not to be put on any AI projects. I can't quit (because I need to eat), but I can keep trying to get a new job so they stop benefiting from my labor. (The job market sucks, and AI Labor Theft isn't helping)

The other thing I can do is raise alarms on social media, I can write my political representatives (and because one of them is Bernie Sanders, it'll probably at least get read; maybe get him a sound bite). I can look for opportunities to make public comment. I can withhold my labor from AI-supportive projects wherever possible.

I can opt out of Tumblr's model. It'll maybe be closing the door after the horse has bolted, but it's also not nothing.

Now, don't get me wrong, tumblr selling out the users to AI companies is bad, yes, they shouldn't do that. It sucks.

but don't lets get this confused: your posts were already in there. Tumblr selling them is about tumblr making some money and about the AI models having more exhaustive post collections. It's not about your posts being in an AI model, vs not being in one. That battle has already been lost.

Can you find your post on google? Then it's almost certainly in an AI model already. Think about it: These AI sites showed up before all the sites were making deals to sell their users' content, right? How do you think they built them in the first place?

They scraped the posts. Just like google and bing and such do when they build their search indexes.

It's a fundamental part of how the open web works: you want your posts on tumblr to be visible to users, right? You want them to be readable?* Like, look how much stuff broke when twitter changed their whole read-while-not-logged-in policy, ruining a bunch of thread links/NSFW links. And if it's visible, it's scrapable. That's what the AI models were built on.

I've done website scraping before (not for AI models, of course. I was doing search engines and website archival), this is just how it works. You hire a few relatively smart CS graduates and tell them "build me a scraper that'll give us a bunch of tumblr posts" and they go off for a month or two and come back with a database of a few billion posts, and you stuff that into your AI model. That's how they got all the deviantart and flickr and twitter and pinterest and so on posts. They didn't pay for them: they just took them.

They only ever pay for this shit because either:

they fucked up in such a way that the site might be able to sue them for taking rather than paying

They can buy them cheaper than they can finish taking them. Maybe they'd need to pay the CS grads for an extra month? well, that might be more expensive than just throwing the site a couple hundred thousand bucks.

ANYWAY: my point is, don't treat this "oh no tumblr is selling our posts to AI" like it's a big thing that might happen and it would be bad to happen. Yes, it's bad, tumblr shouldn't do this, this'll let AI models get continual updates of content for far easier than just scraping them would be, tumblr betrayed user trust, and so on...

but realistically, this is not a black and white matter of "if only tumblr didn't do this, then we'd be safe from AI models!"

Nope. We already lost that battle. I'm sorry, and it does suck, but that's just how it is. The avalanche has already started, it's too late for the pebbles to vote. * I'm assuming here that you don't run a private blog that's set to only followers or something. You'd be safer then, of course, but you're not really my target audience for this rant
