Who the fuck listens to podcasts anyway, and most importantly who cares: 10  best hip-hop podcasts that I  fuck with

Podcasts have featured heavily in my life for the past 3 or 4 years. The first podcast’s that I heard  was the design podcast “99% invisible.” The next podcast I fell for was the first season of the thriller of podcasts Serial. Very soon after I fell into the Hip-Hop and urban culture (I hate this word) rabbit hole, largely because I am a black talk radio and Hip-Hop urban radio fiend. I always loved the opinions, the perspectives and the style that american urban radio stations presented. The first one that I truly loved and continue to call one of the goats is easily

Juan Epstein

At the time this was the bomb.com, I was working at very a  strenuous industrial gig. This podcast was literally a thing I looked forward too at my job. As I worked day in and day out podcasts not only helped pass the time, but they helped bring me much needed joy, sadness and knowledge.  Its hard to breakdown the best episodes of Juan Epstein, because I loved Cipha and Rosenberg a lot. In particular i felt Rosenberg is a kindred spirit because of his college radio roots and his rabid focus on ephemeral bizzare Hip-Hop knowledge. I found Rosenberg annoying, but very endearing because he reminds me of myself. The Hip-Hop fan that gorged on The Source and Rap Pages, that studied liner notes and became a consumet college radio Hip-hop geek. Alongside Cipha, someone that experienced the industry from a first person perspective, this podcast was and remains essential listening, for true nerds trying to decipher weird things like, why did Havocs hi-hats hit so hard, what was it about Bob Powers studio engineering that made Tribe and De-La’s records knock so hard. Its a podcast that while managing irreverence and comedy, it also gave you an in-depth peak behind the curtain. my favorite episodes include:

2) Interview with Deric “D-Dot” Angelette

3} Interview with Bun-B

Second but not a far second, Combat Jack one upped Juan Epstein a lot. Combat had a slightly more street attitude and an ability to take conversations  into testy territory. He did so in much the same way that future podcasts like  Tax Season and Drink Champs do today. Combat brought the streets into podcasts taking us into the hard and edgy underbelly of Hip-Hop.

He was also very early endorsing acts like Roc Marciano, Action Bronson and Westside gunn. The five best episodes I can remember are:

1) Foxy Brown episode (Made me cry and admire Foxy so much)

2) Prince Paul episode (Prince Pauls endless charisma and knowledge)

3) Scarface episode (Face is easily Hip-Hops poet laureate and mad man)

4) Eric-B episode (Lovely to know how street and gangster Eric-B was)

5) Jessica Rosenblum episode

Comedy and Hip-Hop go hand in hand, I view comedy as essential part of the DNA of Hip-Hop. Even in both Juan Epstein and Combat Jack, both podcasts dedicated time and energy to comedy, so the next podcast that I couldn't live with out is ‘The Champs Podcast”.

Its two white brothers, one of them co-creator of the paradigm shifting Chapelle Show. These white brothers don’t get squeamish around black people and are so good at being funny and unpacking whats at the heart of whatever issues they where tackling. Best episodes where

Shots Fired is a podcast presented by writer blogger Jeff Weiss and L.A weirdo underground rap maverick Nocando. These dudes bring a bizarre weird and irreverent west coast perspective to the podcast format. A lot of their episodes might not have the big guests we think of but Nocando and Jeff Weiss got the charisma to make this an extremely enlightening and funny podcast. Link to the podcast is

Dave Chapelle post The screening “untitled” . . . What can I say? This screening was incredible! . I saw that @DaveChappelle was coming to #NYC so I had to buy tickets. Honestly, I didn’t know what to expect but with my previous experiences with him, I knew it was going to be crazy. . This experience was not only a concert and a movie. It was an in-person celebration of laughter and love. A star studded event on stage and in the crowd. The show wrapped up after six consistent hours of amazing entertainment. They closed the show with Busta Rhymes, a legendary artist that has always given energy to the city of New York. I was going against the grain walking towards the stage with the flood of people coming towards my way but I wanted to get my record signed so bad. A fitting momento for this historic moment in time. Only my good friend @musicisterry knows that look I get on my face when I’m determined and not nothing or no one in the world can stop me. I walked towards the stage while everybody in the movie was taking a group picture on the stage, and I put up my LP for the world to see it. Dave spotted the limited addition record, and he walked towards me and Ushered the security to let me in. I got to shake his hand and thank him once again for his amazing work I wanted to give all my Legends their flowers before they leave us. This wasn’t my first time talking to Dave and it won’t be the last I am thankful for his spirit and the laughter that he brings the world. May you live forever Dave Chappelle. And remember life is rough, laugh a little bit. . And of course when you’re sitting in the floor seats at The Garden you have to bring out the fur 😆.
