I’m sorry, the complaining about all the elriel content during Elain week is grating because it feels exactly like people complaining an artist is focusing too much on their *interest* and not providing enough of the content *you* wanted. If you want a specific art done, I must implore you find someone to commission or you learn to draw yourself. Do not nag and whine that there’s not enough of the content that you wanted to see, that this isn’t portrayed how you see it- go create it, nobody is stopping you. Ok that’s a lie, this fandom has many limitations and judgements. Still, **You have the power to do what you want and see what you want to see**. You have not only the ability to block people but the ability to create and be the source of your own interests.
Stop depending on others to provide for you, ESPECIALLY commissioners and artists you spend the rest of the year outside of the event making fun of and slandering. The commissioners you speak so poorly of really get the beat down the rest of the year and they have provided so much “non ship” content, we are truly blessed they spent their time, money, creativity bringing it forward. Enough of this entitled behavior, go create. It’s really that simple. This event was doomed from the start with the sabotage campaign and still people poured their soul into it regardless. Just because YOU have a skewed idea of “elriels” doesn’t mean everybody who participated is actually the way you perceive them. These are truly lovely people and you are held back by your bias and hatred of a ship instead of either ignoring or uplifting what they created (obviously outside the ship art). No one is forcing you to dissect their captions (which they have a right to make, we all are encouraged to make artist statements and say what the source of inspiration was).
And it’s hypocritical to say only elriels are doing this, that’s never true. Nearly everyone makes some statement, sometimes no statement IS a statement even. I really do not like speaking to this fandom but I cannot get over how EXHAUSTIVE it is to exist in this space with such negative people. I have to think twice when working on a piece because it’s going to offend someone, I don’t need that. I’m not out to harm people, neither are those who participated in Elain week the way they did. It’s hilarious seeing the people who ATTACKED ME during elriel month talk from some moral high ground about how things should be done and what should be embraced when they were spitting at me in May and destroyed my drive to create anything for this special week. I’m going to talk because I am a creative that has tried my best not to step on toes but enough is enough, you guys make fandom such a miserable experience when it doesn’t have to be like that. Seriously, you will feel better if you create from your heart and make the content you want to see.

To add, most artists in any other fandom aren’t so intense about opposing ships or whether a ship is endgame or not. We just draw. In any other fandom, I genuinely would not be bothered by my friends or mutuals or non moots drawing whatever it was they wanted (of course there’s limitations, we all have boundaries), hell it was encouraged you drew whatever it was that you fancied, that’s how you built a following and made friends. This fandom it’s a damn crime for some reason if you draw one ship or the other and I really scratched my head at first but I understood with time- book fandom hardly respects artists. It’s the truth.
You have to somehow telepathically understand how someone else views a character physically, what they deem canon, what is appropriate for THEM, not for YOU the artist. It’s infuriating. It’s tiring. And I don’t blame artists for packing up and leaving on top of all the harassment and expectations they get- yes, even from the people who ship the same thing as them. You can’t draw this character like this, this is “anti” ideology, this character is using another character’s traits in this art (that’s wrong). It’s insanity. I really don’t blame artists who draw this or the other, none of us should be bound to expectations of wild shippers running rampant. I’ve seen people say they unliked and unfollowed a rising artist because they “feel like they ship this”. Who cares ?? Clearly book fandom. Acotar fandom. It’s nonsense.
I got harassed for drawing Elain with a sword she WOULD BE ABLE TO USE but the people who went at me repost and talk about theories where their fave (who at the moment CANONICALLY CANNOT) is wielding the same sword. The hypocrisy is nuts, the need to rage is nuttier. I’m so over this fandom, spend a little time and the burnout is real. Godbless the artists of this fandom who keep going. Creators are what keep it going, not haters. If you are toxic about art/fic/creative content, I really would like you to reflect on your behavior.
Is it just me, but I don’t like how in this fandom everyone is being pacified. I know of of this one YouTube channel where two women discus the “Easter eggs” that SJM put down for gywnriel, bryriel, & Elain and Tamlin. It’s the same with getting art commissioned for the next couple. Artists feel like they HAVE to also draw something to appease to Gwynriels, Bryce x Azriel shippers, & the Elain x Tamlin shippers. They are treating this fandom like “everyone is a winner” type of thing, where someone might have come in third place but they also get a prize for competing, even though they didn’t come in first place.
This isn’t the third grade where everyone gets brownie points to make everyone happy. This is about what’s the next most logical ship. I thought we were all adults. As it turns out, artists can’t even be bold about being an Elriel because they have to worry about drawing something to appease to other ships. They don’t really have to in my opinion. I am sorry.
No, we aren't all adults. That's the thing.
Most artist are doing all these double, triple arts not because they want to but because they don't want to be harassed by GAs.
GAs were so vicious back in 21-22 that artists left completely, or just decided that this wasn't worth their time and nerves and just did GA arts not to be hassled.
Like Morgana is a good example. She is a huge artist and she repeatedly, for YEARS, declined to do GA, because of a variety of reasons. But they--especially one of them--hassled her so relentlessly, she finally just said fuck it and did a GA piece. And wasn't too shy about saying just that--today she drew it because they wouldn't leave her alone.
Other artists, who were staunchly Elriel, just stopped making art entirely or don't do any more SJM art.
Even big popular writers of a few years ago were approached--and even offered money--so write GA. There were promised of 'it will open you up to such a large audience. It would be good for your exposure. You should write GA.'
Listen, I was offered $200 once to write an Elriel piece, where at the end, Elain decided to leave Azriel for Lucien, and Gwyn swept in. It was suggested as a 'compromise' for all parties apparently. And everyone would be happy and I wouldn't have to write a GA fic exclusively.
Good thing I am rich and don't need $200 and wouldn't give my info to a random GA. But yeah, there was that.
And with artists, who can actually make money on commissions, it was an offer they couldn't refuse.
