The coolest celebrity Halloween costumes spotted this year
1/15
Kim Kardashian West
Whether it was channeling singing sensation Aaliyah, teaming her version of Cher with best friend Jonathan Chebanâs Sonny or Madonna at the Oscars with Michael Jackson (played by sister Kourtney Kardashian), Kardashian West sure seemed to be tipping her hat to her favourite icons, this Halloween.
Image: Instagram.com/foodgod
Sarah Hyland
While we all knew Stranger Things would dominate Halloween, Modern Familyâs Sarah Hyland switched things up by dressing as fan-favourite Dustin from the hit series. Playing Eleven to her Dustin? A blonde-wig wearing Wells Adams.
Image: Instagram.com/sarahhyland
Ariel Winter
The younger (on-screen) sister isnât far behind, but her choice of costume couldnât be more different than her Modern Family co-star. Winter, known for her slightly sexier wardrobe, donned a painted face, like a skull and brought her boyfriend along as matching skull.
Image: Instagram.com/arielwinter
Zoe Isabella Kravitz
The queen of cool, crooner Lenny Kravitzâ daughter went the cult classic routeâshe teamed up with Karl Glusman who played the Marta Singer to her Tyler Durden, from Fight Club.
Image: Instagram.com/zoeisabellakravitz
Karlie Kloss
Coiffed, coutured and costumed, Karlie Kloss was channeling yet another blonde stunner this holiday season and she took on Marilyn Monroeâs iconic white dress look.
Image: Instagram.com/karliekloss
Joan Smalls
Referring to herself as âmoody Minnieâ, the model did a grown-up version of the pretty mouse.
Image: Instagram.com/joansmalls
Bruce Willis
While this seems to be a list extensively of ladies so far, our first male winner is Bruce Willis, who showed up as one half of twins from The Shining. Yup weâre talking blue ruffled dresses and shoulder length wigs on the macho man best known for Die Hard.
Image: Instagram.com
Natalia Vodianova
The Vogue India cover star and supermodel took her love for art to a whole new level and channeled artist Jeff Koonsâ sculpture Venus.
Image: Instagram.com/natasupernova
Joe Keery
We love ourselves a little Steve (from Stranger Things), and we love Harry Potter, and when the twain met? He knocked it out of the park!
Image: Instagram.com
Jason Derulo
The Night King is back. We honestly expected more Game of Thrones-themed costumes, but the singer knocked it out of the park with his version of the demonic, other-worldly royal.
Image: Instagram.com/jasonderulo
Kristen Bell
Sheâs frozen in time. Well, at least her daughters are making sure she is. The Frozen star might have played Anna, the other sister, but due to the insistence of her offspring she was channeling blond beauty Elsa this year.
Image: Instagram.com/kristenanniebell
Kaia Gerber
Wearing a fringed blonde wig, disco-esque silver blouse and hoops, she was throwing it back to the â70s with her costume.
Image: Instagram.com/kaiagerber
Aubrey Plaza
True to her dark and twisted onscreen persona, Parks and Recreation alum @evilhag Aubrey Plaza dressed up as none other than Wednesday Addams.
Image: Instagram.com/plazadeaubrey
Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerber
The handsome couple and parents to Kaia Gerber, went coordinated as a â70s couple.
Image: Instagram.com/cindycrawford
Riccardo Tisci
The iconic fashion designer smeared his face with blood, and attached a pigâs nose to his own, to caption his image: go vegetarian. While weâre not quite sure what he is, weâre definitely frightened.

Art F City: Highlights From The Marciano Collection
The Marciano Art Foundation has been the biggest pleasant surprise of 2017. As Iâve mentioned on the blog before, the new museum, funded by the GUESS Jeans fortune, delivers big-time with site-specific special projects from Jim Shaw and Ryan Trecartin and Lizzie Fitch. Those installations are so enthusiasm-inspiring itâs almost easy to overlook the âquieterâ collection itself, on display mainly in the third floor galleries.
That would be a mistake, because the collectionâthe bones of the Marciano Art Foundationâhas been curated in such a satisfying , thoughtfully-paced manner that the viewing experience stays engaging throughout. Thatâs a rarity, unfortunately, in so many hangs of private collections, which tend not to have a specific focus beyond showing off their holdings. Here, though, there are narrative interests evident in the Marcianosâ collection, perhaps highlighted by the apocalyptic nature of the Jim Shaw show and the site-specific âbehind-the-scenesâ vibe of the Trecartin/Fitch collaborationânamely an interest in social tension or upheaval and works that reveal their process, respectively.
Latifa Echakhch, âTannhĂ€user,â 2013.
It didnât occur to me why I found the show to be surprisingly good until the final gallery, standing in front of a Latifa Echakhch installation. âDecline of Western Civilizationâ imagery from Shawâs workânamely, the neoclassical in a state of ruinâis echoed in Echakhchâs âTannhĂ€user,â a recreation of sets from a midcentury production of the opera, seen here in disarray. The pieceâs apocalyptic feel struck a chordâitâs nothing if not timelyâbut it also reminded me of the Bass Museumâs shamelessly tacky One Way: Peter Marino during Art Basel Miami Beach a few years back. That exhibition, of the architect/minor celebrityâs private collection, featured opera sets as well. That show turned me off of the design worldâs incursions into art collecting immenselyâit had little substance beyond sleek aesthetic and name recognition and felt like a sales pitch for Marinoâs practice rather than a museum exhibition. The Marciano Art Foundation, on the other hand, is thematically and stylistically diverse. It feels artist-centric, and certainly engaged with contemporary concerns.
And, crucially, at no point did I feel like I was being sold GUESS Jeans.
Curator Philipp Kaiser has drawn inspiration from the 1931 Walter Benjamin text âUnpacking My Library: A Talk about Book Collectingâ, and Benjaminâs enthusiastic embrace of both critical thinking and the joys of seeing objects is evident here. Donât let allusions to a nearly-nine-decade-old essay about even older things throw you off thoughâthe exhibition features almost exclusively work from the 21st century. Mostly though, the collection is remarkably smart and even more remarkably fun. The artist list here doesnât offer the unexpectedâitâs the usual blue-chip rosterâbut the quality of the works from those artists is worth noting. Few pieces here feels like soullessly overproduced art fair booth fodder.
A few highlights below:
David Hammons, âUntitled,â acrylic and spray paint on fox fur coat, 2007.
Danh Vo âPantoffle II,â gold, cardboard, and ink, 2014.
In the lobby, visitors are greeted by a mural-sized Cindy Sherman print from 2010, in which the artist dons ritualistic attire. Iâm told it was offered to the Marciano brothers when they bought the building (a vaguely creepy former Masonic lodge) and its dress-up vibe sets the tone for many of the works here, which frequently have a sense of play. David Hammonsâ nearby vandalized fur coat works well as its companion. A Danh Vo piece, hung on a wall of the original travertine, recalls the mid-century buildingâs gaudy gold detailingâhere with gold printed directly onto humble cardboard, mimicking a panel of crushed Budweiser boxes.
Jonas Wood, âStudio Exteriorâ Oil and acrylic on canvas 2014.
The top floor galleries feature an epic balcony with views toward the Hollywood Hills, and some of the work hung in this part of the museum recalls the indoor/outdoor lifestyle the sprawl below is famous forâL.A. painter Jonas Woodâs âStudio Exterior,â for example, depicts an outdoor space with potted plants and a set of gym weights. Thereâs a casual nature to the work that makes it feel like a space youâd want to hang out in and have a beer with the artist.
Allora & Calzadilla, âPetrified Petrol Pump #2,â limestone, 2010 and Glenn Ligon, âDouble America,â neon and paint, 2014.
Louise Lawler, âPollyanna (Adjusted to Fit),â adhesive wall material, 2007/2008/2012 with Takashi Murakami paintings.
Iâm not usually a big fan of Takashi Murakami paintings (the sterility of his signature âsuperflatâ style doesnât appeal to me, personally). This flower diptych, however,  drew me in. The cheery anime millefleur patterns are surprisingly textured and distressed up-close, revealing some sort of anxiety behind the smile-tilâ-it-hurts expressions on the characters. The gallery also features Louise Lawlerâs âPolyanna,â which is a photograph of another Murakami alongside other blue-chip staples such as Warholâs âSkullsâ. The print has been stretched horizontally to fit the spaceâagain adding a sense of tension to something that could otherwise be dismissed as wallpaper. So too, does the representation of the Murakami beside the originals. Thereâs a slight discordanceâa quality present in only the best Murakami works.
Mike Kelley, âKandor 18B,â 2010.
Sterling Ruby, âBasin Theology/Dark Plate Helm,â 2016.
These pieces from Mike Kelley and Sterling Ruby also speak to a similar type of viewingâboth feel like the tabletop make-believe escape of an introverted child. Thereâs again a notion of trouble in constructed paradise.
Carol Bove, âUntitled,â Peacock feathers on linen, plexiglass vitrine, 2012 and âPeelâs foe, not a set animal, laminates a tone of sleep,â brass and concrete, 2013.
Thatâs a recurring motif in so much of the work hereâfrom an exquisitely crafted Carol Bove sculpture that reminded me of Peter Burrâs dystopian architectures to an epic Goshka Macuga tapestry documenting scenes from the Occupy movement. The latter was originally commissioned for documenta 13. It always feels strange seeing Occupy artwork in the private high-end marketâoddly reassuring, on some level, that the protestorsâ messages made it to the eyes of the 1%, albeit by several degrees of remove.
Goshka Macuga, âOf what is, that is; of what is not, that it is not 2,â wool tapestry, 2012.
Rikrit Tiravanija, âUntitled (Los DĂas De Esta Sociedad Son Contados,â acrylic and newspaper on linen, 2011.
