Hoy en @geocienciachile te contamos sobre el primer plesiosaurio del género Vinialesaurus carolini encontrado en el hemisferio sur. Este hallazgo fue hecho por el equipo del paleontólogo chileno Rodrigo Otero en el Cerro Bayos, que se encuentra a 16 km al suroeste de Calama, Chile.🇨🇱 Este estudio presenta los primeros plesiosaurios recuperados del Jurásico del Desierto de Atacama, en formaciones geológicas asociadas a la cuenca marina del Oxfordiano (163 a 157 Ma). Esta evidencia refuerza la idea del intercambio de vertebrados marinos entre el norte del mar de Tetis y el Pacífico sur, a través de la vía marítima del Caribe en el Jurásico Medio y Tardío. Esto se debe a que recién hacia 3 millones de año se cerro el istmo de Panamá, aislando el Pacífico de lo que hoy es el Atlántico. Cabe mencionar que los vertebrados marinos eran reptiles y que sólo los que vivían en el continente eran dinosaurios. This finding was made by the team of the Chilean paleontologist Rodrigo Otero in Cerro Bayos, which is located 16 km southwest of Calama, Chile.🇨🇱 This study presents the first plesiosaurs recovered from the Jurassic of the Atacama Desert, in geological formations associated with the Oxfordian marine basin (163 to 157 Ma). This evidence reinforces the idea of the exchange of marine vertebrates between the North of the Tethys Sea and the South Pacific, through the Caribbean seaway in the Middle and Late Jurassic. This is because just over 3 million years ago the Isthmus of Panama closed, isolating the Pacific from what is now the Atlantic. It is worth mentioning that marine vertebrates were reptiles and that only those that lived on the continent were dinosaurs.
