Apples- so many of them. Anyone want to do a cider course or just a pressing next Thursday and Friday? Apples are free. Make juice.

Dear Sophie,
Remember when we went to that cider mill?
I sort of regret ever asking you to come with me because now when I go there (because I still go there, it’s my favorite cider mill) I think about you. On the drive there I think about how you said the city was so nice and it would be a great place to live and I agreed, and how in an alternate universe, you and I are living in a small but beautiful house in that general area and maybe we have a couple of kids by now and we’re genuinely very happy.
Sometimes—again, intrusive thoughts—I think that, however infinitesimal, there’s still a chance something like that might happen. That we’ll have an Anne Elliot/Captain Wentworth moment (this would be the time for that) and we’ll end up together somewhere.
Probably not in this universe, but… maybe.
It’s October and therefore cider season again, and so I am—on an almost weekly basis, despite it being significantly more out of my way than it was when we went there—making my way back there again. Last year—and the year before, and etc.—I cried while on my way there.
And I’m crying now, ugh.
But this year it’s been different because I finally have someone else to associate going there with. I know at some point that will make me cry, too, but for now it makes going there less bittersweet and more just sweet.

This is Gus Gus. Our vet is pretty significantly south of us, so while the cider mill is also pretty south of where we live now, it’s still on our way back from the vet. We had an appointment and I decided to stop by on our way back, so I took the opportunity to take some pictures (because I love taking pictures of my baby). I don’t intend to post all of them here—I don’t post them much at all, really, even though I’m less possessive of them than I am of pictures of his “older brother” (also a hedgehog)—but having them, having the experience, is so nice because my brain defaults to having him with me there rather than having you with me there, like it has for years.
I’m sure I’ll tell you about Gus Gus’ older brother someday, since there’s something of a connection to you there as well, but this is about how grateful I am for Gus Gus.
And that even so, against my better judgement, I hope that maybe we—you and I—can go back there together someday.
And if not, that someday I’ll be able to go there without thinking about you at all.
Probably not in this universe, but… maybe.
