one of my absolute favourite tropes is “degenerative morality swops”

but specifically where character a is introduced as the “straight laced rule following law abiding character who believes in sacrifice for the greater good and will attempt to save the world over significant others and themselves” and character b is introduced as “troublemaker, rule breaker, full of chaos, does what they think is right whether it follows the law or not and will self sacrifice but will also judge whether the world or their significant other is worth saving more”

and then -> character a falls in love with character b and suddenly nothing else matters except character b’s safety and happiness, and the entire world can burn as long as character b is safe. EXCEPT, character b has fallen into some kind of evil/dark power and is slowly losing their own morality, but character a is protecting them and so by extension also losing their morality

ITS JUST SO GOOD!

like here’s the upstanding character falling in love (already an horrific act) with someone who plays jump rope with every moral action that makes a perosn respectable. and the love doesn’t make either of them better. no they both descend into some sort of madness. LET ME EAT THAT UP.

and what I mean is, he’s like biting into fresh watermelon on a hot summer’s day. he’s burning your fingers trying to roast marshmallows. and the breath in the moment before disaster.

I am physically sick about the fact that out of EVERYONE in wei wuxian’s life (including the brother and sister he would absolutely kill and die for) the only person he felt safe enough to be vulnerable and open with about a lonely terrifying experience was lan zhan

I accidentally clicked “more info” while I was trying to press play on this episode and ended up reading the synopsis and it says “wuxian comes clean to lan zhan” ANNCKELCJSLJCLWOXKWLJWPWJWMWPDJLQW NOONE TOUCH ME IM SO EXCITED

it’s definitely not 4:30 in the morning and I’m definitely not screaming and shaking and crying and throwing up that lan zhan and wei wuxian are separated AGAIN.

(and then he’s questioning why he’s even in love with this dumbass in the first place)

(I have the answer: it’s because he cares about you like no one else, always wants to see you smiling, and puts himself in absolute danger for you with no hesitation)

so I’m ten episodes in (just about to start ep 11— everyone ignore the fact that it’s 1:30am) and now that I have a good grasp of the characters and their names, I’ve gone back to watch the beginning scene of the first episode and let me tell you…not one of my best ideas🫡not only does it hurt so much worse now that I know the who and what…but also catching details and realising how this is getting set up just makes the dread of the episodes I am watching that much worse…because how are we going from my grumpy serious baby tolerating his sunshine troublemaker on their little adventures to whatever the fuck war bloodied death scene? and moreover how does all of this translate to 16 years later when he’s not wei wuxian but is? and lan zhan is still lan zhan?

what I’m really asking is: is the love still there ? will they die for one another all over again?
