Ch 10: the end.

The first of the day’s birdsong floated through the open window, dancing in the sway of the curtains as they billowed inwards on the breeze. The air kissed the High Lord’s cheek, rousing him from sleep. With a yawn and a stretch, he blinked his eyes open letting the still dark morning fill his vision. His mate’s scent was near, warm, and inviting him back into the arms of sleep. Instead, he carefully brushed a strand of hair out of his mate’s face and climbed out of bed as quietly as possible.

“Please.” The Shadowsinger’s voice broke, barely able to utter the word. He couldn’t look into his brother’s eyes for fear of the rejection he might find there. “Cass, please. I know what I am asking. ”  “Do you?” There was so much pain in that simple sentence. Azriel felt like he was being buried by them, one handful of dirt at a time while he lay at the bottom of a hole he had dug just watching, unable to move.  “Yes,” He insisted. “You’re probably all right. No, definitely right. Just… let me try this and I promise we can go straight to Rhys after. I’m sure it's safe.” He lied.

“I thought you left.” Eris said, clearing his throat a little.  “I meant to,” Azriel replied, voice lower than he intended. His wings spread ever so slightly behind him as he swayed forward into the pull of the male before him. It was invisible but getting harder and harder to resist.  “So go,” Eris whispered, taking a step forward. Azriel’s heart was beating so loudly he was surprised that Eris hadn’t commented on it.
