So the weddings(so far) are as follows:
I. The McDonalds wedding. Green is in a suit and me a dress, very traditional, the playplace is our alter
II. Human court. Green is making a rare appearance in a dress, I’m wearing feyr suit, confusing for everyone involved.
III. Faerie court. It’s a beautiful spring wedding, we’re both in dresses. We’re radiant, goddesses, creatures of the night. very folksy, there’s a bonfire, a fairy circle, someone probably was killed
IV. FNAF. Matching suits, my ringmaster announcer self+abandoned Chuck E Cheese+ our batshit feral ideas = anarchy. It’s a circus from hell and we’re both the performers and the audience.

A Guide to The Adventure Zone metaplot
So recently, I re-listened to the entirety of TAZ in prep for the ending and took notes; as we head into the finale next week, I wanted to share them! This is a comprehensive look at every plot thread, bit of foreshadowing, and yet-unresolved ideas as we head into endgame. This involves heavy spoilers through the most recent episode (66) and assumes you have already listened or read the content before.
The full is under the cut!
A QUICK NOTE: Transcripts of every episode can be found here, and while I didn’t include timestamps, the “front/back half” description here refers to before or after the ad break, which the transcripts note the location of.
Without further ado, we start with...
Episode 5 (Here There Be Gerblins: Chapter Four), the first half- Taako gets the Umbra Staff; it’s funny to note it chucked Merle across the room first, and also that Taako whiffs a fucking arcana check on it and just eats a bit of the robe, which will probably never come up again but in my heart of hearts it was. Also, Merle's first Zone of Truth and the first time the Bureau is mentioned.
Episode 7 (Moonlighting: Chapter One), the second half- Intro of the Voidfish, Johann, and the specifications of the first inoculation. Lots of tiny tiny details about the Relic War. I’d give specific timestamps but I really just rec reading the transcript in full from the Voidfish intro on. Episode 8 (Moonlighting: Chapter Two), the first half- Lucretia's intro! Again, lots of tiny details, though the characterization here is all over the place because the boys don't know what the hell they're doing yet. Regardless, the important thing here is what Lucretia tells them about the relics, the war, and the timeline- and with what we now know from the future, she’s telling the (partial) truth. (Taako also makes a joke about the last relic being Love, which is funny re: ep 60 and the way the Starblaster works as powered by bonds). The second half isn't as important, but it DOES involve Magnus' first robot arm-ripping AND the first time the Umbra Staff responds to Taako; important to note that it’s described as "warm". Episode 17 (Lunar Interlude I: Carnival Chaos), the first half- What we now know to be the first appearance of the Hunger's scouts at the carnival- it’s never explicitly explained, but I believe the effect was so prominent because the Moonbase isn’t on the ground and therefore closer to the edges of the plane. It’s important to keep in note Lucretia's reactions to all of this; episode 17 takes place a week after the boys bring back the second relic, and adding that to Lucretia’s staff, having 3/7 relics means almost half the Light was assembled and that’s as much as the Hunger needed to find this plane- which starts our timeline of a year until episode 59. Episode 18 (Petals To The Metal- Chapter One), the second half (though honestly just the last 5 minutes)- Taako Blinks into the ethereal plane for the first time, and the Hunger is there, watching (as we see mentioned later during Stolen Century). It’s important to note that Griffin mentions later in ep 28 that the Petals arc only took place a few days after the Midsummer Festival.
Episode 27 (Petals To The Metal- Chapter Ten), the second half (Sloane's fight onward to the end)- A few interesting things here. One, Taako's Extra Big Fireball from the umbra staff is of note; it could be the Arcane Core but it's just as likely Lup's first influence (if we don’t count it responding to him in ep 8). Also, the last 10ish minutes with Captn. Bane and the first appearance of Lich Barry. The verbiage here is of specific note- he describes the pull to the Relics as a "hunger". Episode 28 (Lunar Interlude II- Internal Affairs), all- This is where Griffin has obviously finished the plot and where he intends to start putting the work in motion towards the overarching plot. There’s a LOT of schtick to parse through at the start but what’s primarily important is what Lucretia says about the red robes- that they’re ones who created the Relics, and never to even speak to them- isn’t technically a lie. We also know that the 2 days the boys were gone is when Barry took over Pringles to get into the moonbase, and from there on out was kicked off through magic- likely why he went to approach them directly before they made it back. Also, ANGUS MCDONALD BOY DETECTIVE’S REAPPEARANCE I’m sorry I love him so much I had to mention him somewhere. There’s also a lot of Voidfish info here- Johann's speech (about being forgotten, the Voidfish's first response to Magnus (WHICH KICKS MY WHOLE ASS WITH EMOTION) and its song, and Lucas' jab of "What if it reproduces asexually and pops out a baby that makes us forget about it???" Ha. Haha. Ha. The second half is all character building, but it IS the first mention of the Flaming Poisoning Raging Sword of Doom and the fucking Glutton's Fork which continues to haunt me for all the vore it added to this podcast. The actual important thing here is the end of this episode is where Garfield makes off with Magnus' shield... and blood, so that’s our timeline on the vat in the back (a full year, since Petals took only a few days after the Midsummer Festival). Episode 29 (Crystal Kingdom- Chapter One), in the middle before the break- The IPRE badges under the Candlenights tree. While it’s possible Barry left them somehow when he was possessing Pringles there’s still no good answer as to how these got here and it just Never Comes Up Ever Again. This is also where we learn Lucretia's name, and it’s important to note her reaction to people using it- especially the boys, in the sharp way we see her try and disconnect. This is also the first time we ever see her writing in her journals. Episode 35 (Crystal Kingdom- Chapter Seven), all - The Cosmoscope. Our first explanation of planes, other worlds, and “possibly” planetary travel, and is important for noting how Griffin describes the planar system. Also, Barry again, who continues to use the phrase "hunger of all living things" and "the light of creation itself" and I'm a little mad I didn't put THAT one together until writing this. Additionally, Barry's noticing of the umbrella and Lup- "You found her", before he's wreathed in flames (which is likely what Paloma refers to in her later prophecy to Taako in episode 49). Noelle also has her subsequent lich scanning, of catching Barry... but also possibly Lup, as it’s the same wording Kravitz uses later in episode 50 when the Umbra Staff starts to respond. One of the mirrors in Lucas' trash bin, as well, had the Hunger scout's eyes inside- Black Opal, that “didn’t resonate with any planes”; Griffin later describes the Hunger as the 13th plane, and Magnus took this mirror, so maybe it can be put to use later on. Episode 38 (Crystal Kingdom- Chapter Ten), in the middle- Kravitz' discussion of how many times the boys have died- Taako (8), Magnus (19), and Merle (57). Magnus says "he think he'd remember" if he died that many times- again, Ha, Haha, Ha. Also, if you're looking for fun, Magnus eats the fucking Philosopher's Stone in the last 15 minutes.
Episode 39 (Crystal Kingdom- Chapter Eleven), the second half- The big thing here is obviously Maureen's Prophecy at the end and the setup for our 7 person team, as follows: The Twins (Lup and Taako), The Lover (Barry), The Protector (Magnus), The Lonely Journal Keeper (Lucretia), The Peacemaker (Merle) and The Wordless One (Davenport). This also sets the groundwork for the Voidfish only being able to erase things from living creatures (a la Barry's Lich form knowing things outside of his body he can't know in flesh unless inoculated). Additionally, Lucretia's bit about the destruction of the cities informs her character and motivation a LOT and I feel is important for understanding that (especially since, from the things we hear in episode 66, all the incidents mentioned are primarily things that happened to the boys’ relics). It's also entirely not relevant to the metaplot, but getting the Philosopher's Stone out of Magnus here is such a good bit. Episode 40 (Lunar Interlude III- Rest and Relaxation), all, esp. the end of Taako's and Merle's segments in the first half- The end of Taako's segment has the Umbra Staff burning L U P in the wall- which he doesn't recognize at all and it  kills me all the time. Its also interesting that the cantrip Angus casts right before that scene is Produce Flame. This may also be where Angus starts investigating the Bureau as a whole and starting to figure things out as he mentions in episode 59. Aside from that, all the boys have important character builders here, but at the end of Merle's talk, Lucretia's note about her adventuring days is very telling- how she "lost dear friends over her choice, but it was the only one to make". This is one of the clips referenced in Lucretia’s bit in episode 66 and it just ends me. Also, again, no relevance to the plot, but the Leon bit here is my favorite one the boys have ever done with the candies. I just fuckin' lose it. Episode 41 (The Eleventh Hour- Chapter One), the very beginning and very end- Griffin drops some Voidfish info, and there’s a little reaction during Boyland's remembrance rights that might be important (about how the Voidfish processes information) Remember- the Voidfish can help the brain implant info, as well as erase it, as we see played with later in episode 64. Also the tiny line at the end from June as the boys enter Refuge- "It's you" as she recognizes Magnus. Episode 42 (The Eleventh Hour- Chapter Two), the very beginning and very end- Tiny bit of discussion regarding the Red Robe when the boys enter Refuge and see the statue. The other thing of note is what Griffin says as the first loop in Refuge comes to an end- "There’s something about the dying that’s familiar." There's been a lot of Istus associations with the planar jumps, but this could also be a reference to Magnus being the one who made the Chalice. Regardless, this was an important early plot call-out. Episode 45 (The Eleventh Hour- Chapter Five), the middle (right before the ad break)- Paloma's Big Prophecy from the black crystal- its description is the exact wording Griffin uses to describe the Hunger later, and describes two things we see in the future, the "sea of tar" from the Astral Plane (episode 57), and the ash being a destroyed world minus the Light of Creation (episode 61). Paloma’s words to Taako being “Remember: there is always a third option”. This is one of the BIGGEST unresolved plot threads heading into the finale and should be kept heavily in mind as the setup for endgame. We may have gotten a reference to it again in episode 66, from Magnus, but it’s uncertain. Episode 47 (The Eleventh Hour- Chapter Seven), the first half with Istus and also the very end- Meeting Istus!  This entire scene is important but things to note here: she mentions the boys don't exist in other iterations of the multiverse, and mentions they have been her agents for "a long time", likely discussing the Hunger, though it's unclear if she even knows the full extent of it as she seems baffled by their existence. We don’t have a clear idea of if the gods exist over the entire multiverse or there’s different iterations for each plane. Also, gods say fuck, and that is wonderful. Its also important to remember what she gives the boys: Merle's time travel orb (which has not been used), Taako's bag of necessity (which ABSOLUTELY still hasn't been opened) and of course, Magnus' Chance Lance. The final thing here- Istus disappearing and saying she can grant them the time to make "a difficult decision" in the future; this is also unresolved going into endgame. Also, at the very end, the Temporal Chalice speaks of being The Light Of Creation. Its our first insight into the Relics being linked, and it's an important note that these things REMEMBER a time before this plane, and therefore have some form of sentience; this may also come into play with the final confrontation with the Hunger. Episode 48 (The Eleventh Hour- Chapter Eight), the first half- The big backstory episode! The jumping-off point is obviously all the static in the boy’s memories which helps us establish exactly when the boys arrive/what takes place before and after the war. This is where we get our solidified timeline- Griffin mentions in Magnus' part the static is "about 12 years ago", and Julia's death was "5 or 6" years ago. It should also be noted Taako's extra pockets of static forgetting, which is of course Lup. It’s also funny to note at the end of the ep that the boys mention missing Barry and being "genuinely regretful" that he died in Phandalin, which at this point was definitely a joke but great accidental foreshadowing, guys. Episode 49 (The Eleventh Hour- Chapter Nine), the second half- Lich Barry's back! With the whole "do you trust me" scene, where we hear Barry's voice as he tries to address Lup- from what we’ve seen, it seems less like he knew she was in the Staff, and more trying to reach out in a desperate attempt to keep his Lich form together. He also talks about the Hunger again. Also, Paloma has one more prophecy for Taako: "In your hour of greatest need, you will find the power that you seek from the man wreathed in flames." This is likely referring to Barry as he burned in ep 35, and this may be an allusion to trusting him. Also there’s the last 6 minute epilogue- Magnus' scroll (revealing he’s a Red Robe and made the Chalice), Merle noticing the stars beginning to go out (now that we’re about 2/3rds of the way through the year since episode 17), and Kravitz is back, which I adore but has little significance to the metaplot. Episode 50 (Lunar Interlude IV- The Calm Before The Storm), the first half- The end of Taako's date (with the Umbra Staff attacking Kravitz), the end of Merle's section (Lich Barry saving Merle's kids) and Magnus' whole character section for the Voidfish swim. Griffin hammers VERY hard on Mavis being 12 in Merle's section, and not much older than Mookie, and this is further defined proof from what we hear in episode 66 about being in this plane for 12 years. Meanwhile, the Kravitz section relates to Lup being in or controlling the umbrella (which seems more like controlling, from what we hear in episode 58), and Magnus' section is our big "there's a second Voidfish" reveal, along with the visions from the Voidfish (that we now know are the actions Magnus takes in ep 64). This is another one where I just advocate reading the entire transcript/relistening to the whole section because it’s full of little details. Also, again, no real big plot relevance, but Taako cons Garfield out of the sword at the end, and I laugh until I cry every fucking time. I also adore the implications that to regrow the Magnus Body, Garfield needed some Real Magnus Sideburns for the vat. He takes blood, skin, and sideburn. The three things you need for a genuine Magnus. Episode 51 (The Suffering Game- Chapter One), the first half and a bit at the end- Now we're getting into the shit; Lucretia sends them out TWO DAYS before the next midsummer, as close as she can manage to not sending them to Wonderland at all before the Hunger's arrival, and only after rigorous training. She is genuinely scared that this is where she’ll lose them, where it felled her. We also get the age reveal for Lucretia, and Magnus breaks in to see Robbie and figures out he was possessed by Lich Barry. This is also where Merle's spells start going fucky, as the Hunger starts to assault the surrounding planes (including the plane where the Gods reside). Episode 53 (The Suffering Game- Chapter Three), the first half- Taako sees the Hunger's scouts in the Ethereal Plane; it’s all over, as compared to the bits of it in episode 18, signifying its closeness to the plane. Plus, Cam's later discussion of liches is our first look at knowing about Barry and Lup’s physical state, and the whole "trust Barry, love Barry" sequence in episode 58 sustaining his soul, even in a mortal body. Episode 56 (The Suffering Game- Chapter Six), a bit at the front, a bit at the back- There’s a lot of unmentioned stuff Barry is doing here that’s largely unimportant, but the thing to notice is Merle's call to Pan- he’s not answering, he’s not there. We know that due to timeline the boys spend less than a day in Wonderland so this is incredibly quick. Later, we get a note how Edward and Lydia used necromancy to make Wonderland- obviously, Barry has to be a necromancer to be a lich, but this is our foreshadowing about the Bell being his relic. There’s also the scene of seeing the astral plane covered in that tar when Taako saves Magnus during Arms Outstretched, just as Paloma predicted in ep 45, where Kravitz is having a no good terrible bad time.
**NOTE: From here on out, descriptions will be referring to whole episodes.** Episode 57 (The Suffering Game- Chapter Seven)- We're IN it now; from here on out we’re looking at full episodes of straight plot. Magnus' visions are important details to the world everyone came from (2 suns, purple sky), plus that the Chalice is absolutely Magnus' relic. Also, of course, The Barry Bluejeans Reveal. We also have the hammering home of how little time the boys spent in Wonderland, since Barry says “tomorrow will be fateful” for the Hunger landing, so it had to be less than a day. Theres also Magnus' other visions: the Starblaster escaping a plane and the Voidfish and a book- what we now know to be the last time Magnus saw the Voidfish as Lucretia erased his memory in episode 66. Episode 58 (Lunar Interlude V- Reunion Tour)- Damn near Everything. Barry's story is the most important at the start- our knowledge that he doesn’t know where Lup is. There’s also the heavy implications here that Lucretia has the ship (though she may not anymore). There’s so much here to unpack I advocate just listening to the whole sequence This is also important to detail how Barry thinks of what happened between him and Lucretia- he says she "vilified" him, obviously very hurt by Lucretia taking this into her own hands. My original notes (before ep 66 dropped) involved thinking of Barry and Lup running off together and it hurts, my heart hurts, everything hurts. And speaking of my heart hurting, there’s Lup's interjection from the Band of Telepathic Thought, detailed as “coming from a cave a few hundred meters away”; Griffin specifically said that Barry’s cave in this episode was VERY close to WaveEcho Cave, implying that not only is Lup alive in her Lich form, she’s not IN the umbrella- just controlling it. Theres also Kravitz in the Astral Plane, which is important to see how the Hunger is taking down the other planes in the system. The very last sentence of this ep may also be John's first technical appearance in the podcast as we formally meet The Hunger. Episode 59 (Lunar Interlude V- Reunion Tour- Part Two)- What ISN’T happening here, to be honest. Magnus' voidfish swim (which we now know to be ep 64's contents), the reveal Lucretia isn’t destroying the relics and what she voidfished, the whole thing about everyone being from another world, LUP,  DAVENPORT, JUST. ALL, CHRIST, ALL OF IT. This is honestly the episode where so much pops off I can't make like play-by-play things because there is just Way too much content. If you're looking for a Very quick thing to refresh post-Stolen Century, listen to Lucretia's ending speech, and the epilogue at the very end after the MaxFun plug, but we all know this one is just Shit Pops Off: The Episode. Episode 60 (The Stolen Century- Chapter One)- Again, so much. A few cliff notes- this is where we learn the Light of Creation fell in that world a year before, so with the Hunger coming they just got very very lucky (and/or here comes Istus to preserve like, all life and fate). Davenport's discussion of bonds is also important, and likely a good allusion to how the endgame is gonna play out- "Bonds are what power this ship, and its what’s going to allow us to go to places we never even dreamed of." (funny ref: Taako's power of love joke in ep 7. Accidental foreshadowing is so good.) There’s also the realization of no permanent deaths right at the end here. Episode 61 (The Stolen Century- Chapter Two)- We find out our basic tenants of the journey- the Light falls when they arrive, a few days later the scouts appear, The Hunger comes 1 year later, and if they can't pick up the Light, the plane is destroyed and the Hunger gets stronger. This is also where it’s named (thanks Lucretia). I love this episode when it comes to character building and solid character choices- Merle's chronicling and the congregation at the end of the mushroom cycle, plus Lup and Taako's argument with the robots are fantastic example of what sets them apart. This is around the time the Mcelroys start acting really really hard and it has not stopped killing me. Also, "light them the fuck up" and "she thinks of her friends, and she prays for sunrise" ruin me completely. I want to say  Lup also puts forward what feels like a lot of foreshadowing for her survival- pushing on how she believes those consumed by the Hunger can be saved. Griffin Mcelroy, you owe me one Lup, and I plan to collect. You better believe, Griffin Mcelroy. Episode 63 (The Stolen Century- Chapter Four) - The obvious most important parts here is the Parlay technique- Merle's communications with The Hunger, aka John, and what he wants/how the Hunger came to be (and of course, what Merle holds important to him in their journey). This also seals down Merle's role as The Peacekeeper in the prophecy. The verbiage here that Griffin uses is important- that John is tying planes on through bonds, and bonds are what give it power, in the same way the ship uses bonds to jump from plane to plane. It should be noted this episode starts at cycle 30 and goes to 47 (tho Griffin also says Merle is killed "a few dozen times", so it’s likely episode 64 happens before the final scene with John). Other things to note- Taako's food bond, which is yet unresolved, and better not be the Taco Quest so help me god. (My gay heart is hopeful for Kravitz.) UPDATE: A keen-eared listener pointed out this scene is underscored with the track The Cosmoscope- supposedly the song playing when Kravitz appears in the mirror. I haven’t confirmed this myself, but I WANT TO BELIEVE. Episode 64 (The Stolen Century- Chapter Five)- [bangs fists on table] VOIDFISH EPISODE VOIDFISH EPISODE VOIDFISH EPISODE!!!!!!!! I'm mad at how balls-to-the-wall Travis is about this characterization and how much it kicks MY ENTIRE ASS. Important things here: the other Voidfish are gone, absorbed into the Hunger; Lucretia learns about inoculation here and absolutely keeps it a secret, and that the Voidfish can directly implant memories, not just erase them, though it is unknown why the Voidfish doesn't do this in their plane. It’s possible they can’t outside of the plane it was made in (though that seems unlikely), or that it requires more Voidfish to do? But I think this should be kept in mind as a potential future option for undoing the second inoculation. I also just adore that Davenport sings? It has nothing to do with fucking anything but I love that he does it’s just Good. We also see the possible coining of Magnus’ tried-and-true line; Magnus rushes in. Episode 65 (The Stolen Century- Chapter Six)- The entire trial scene is pretty important character building here, but the very end is the most important (with the long overlapping prophecy), “The six of you will fall short of glory, so it is known, and so it has always been known". Plus, Lucretia's segment about creating a “barrier” is the start of her plan as referenced later in episode 66. Griffin gives more specifications of how the Voidfish works as well, with remembering the action, not the information. Also, we finally have Lup and Barry becoming liches- and Taako being the main thing that anchors Lup to herself, not just Barry, probably explaining why the Umbra Staff has been responsive to only him Episode 66 (The Stolen Century- Chapter Seven)- This episode is all timeline breakdown. We start with the magical items for the boys (Taako's Krebstar magic glave, Merle's Gilley stick, and Magnus' Bearface helmet snd "#2thnecklace" pendant which will be coming back quickly). We also now know Lup made the Umbra Staff. This is where we get the ideas for the Relics, too- we know it was Barry and Lup's idea, and everyone agrees, but Lucretia, who was working on a barrier (as referenced in ep 65). There’s an interesting line in this conversation- Magnus wishes they had “a third option” of beating the Hunger and killing it. While we can’t promise proper forshadowing from the Boys since Griffin wrote the end, it would make sense if he’s referring to Paloma’s Prophecy to Taako in episode 45. We also have proof of who made which relic- the Phoenix Fire Gauntlet (Lup), the Oculus (Davenport), the Gaia Sash (Merle), the Philosopher's Stone (Taako), the Temporal Chalice (Magnus), the Animus Bell (Barry), and the Bulwark Staff (Lucretia); I pick this spelling in particular because a “bulwark” is a defensive wall, but can also be used to refer to “an extension of a ship's sides above the level of the deck.”. I also just love Griffin trying to retcon Merle's family to cover his ass from the Gerblins arc. Everything else is final timeline clarification- it’s 10 months after they land in this plane until the Relic War starts, and goes another 10 months past that until Lup disappears; Lucretia then erases everyone’s memories 4 months later, at the 2 year mark. leaving a 12 year timeline in this cycle, as suspected in ep 50. We have confirmation that Lucretia found out about innovation in episode 64 too. The end of this ep is the final timeline breakdown- Lucretia placing everyone in these worlds, spending 8.5 years recovering the staff and creating the Bureau, half a year until the Voidfish makes the baby, and then a year on the timeline of the rest of the podcast. And now we're back in it, right where ep 59 left us, ready for it to all pop off.
I hope this helps in your relistening and prep for the finale! This is it, everyone!

As the Boulter House
PHILADELPHIA after being signed to a one year contract with the Eagles, quarterback Tim Tebow admitted to reporters Wednesday that firmly ingraining himself in Philadelphia charity scene probably constitutes his best shot of remaining with the team long term. I want to still be here beyond training camp, I have to be seriously involved with as many charities and nonprofits as possible right from the get go nfl jerseys, said Tebow, noting that he plans on committing his time to various children hospitals and food banks, as well as to every single one of the city Ronald McDonald House locations, in hopes of becoming a beloved, indispensable member of the Philadelphia community. No way this will last for more than a few preseason games unless I driving out to the local Boys and Girls Club with a box of signed youth size Tim Tebow jerseys every afternoon.

We should have some common frickin sense and support people who try to walk the middle of both sides and is honestly interested in the country, not themselves.  nfl jerseys

Hope Idiotic | Part 17
By David Himmel
Hope Idiotic is a serialized novel. Catch each new part every week on Monday and Thursday.
DR. KHORASHI WAS DR. MILNER’S MALE DOPPELGANGER There were no dogs in his office, which was located in a medical building on Michigan Avenue, but it was still a little bit of a granola-new-age mash-up. There was a macramé plant holder hanging from the drop ceiling in his waiting room.
Lou liked Dr. Khorashi. He liked Dr. Milner, too but unlike Milner, this guy laughed at his jokes.
“So, you get dizzy. You’re stressed. A little depressed. Anxious, wound up? Short temper?” Dr. Khorashi inquired.
“All of the above,” said Lou. Lou gave him news-in-brief version of his misery.
“How’s your appetite?”
“Don’t have one.”
“You sleeping?”
“Hardly.”
“How about your sex drive?”
“Normal.”
“Taking any drugs? Abusing alcohol?”
“Allegra-D for my allergies. Lots of scotch for all the other shit.”
“Do you smoke?”
“I’ve been sneaking cigarettes, but I wouldn’t call myself a smoker. Well, I smoke a pipe. I mean I used to smoke a pipe. Girlfriend won’t let me smoke it in the apartment. Too much of a hassle to go outside and enjoy one.”
“A tobacco pipe.”
“Yeah. I like the smell of it. Smells like my grandparents’ house.”
“But you’re smoking cigarettes now.”
“Maybe a pack every month. Just when I’m tired of looking up grad schools and reading rejection letters from would-be employers. Something to do with my hands other than kill myself. You know, immediately, I mean.”
“Have you thought about killing yourself?”
Lou realized that his joke wasn’t a joke at all. Not in a shrink’s office. “No, no. I’m sorry. I was being funny. Really, I’ve never thought about it. I mean, not any more than anyone else has ever thought about it. Just like, when you hear about someone doing it, you wonder about what the last thing to go through their mind was. And not the bullet, like if the person shot himself or anything. No. I’m not suicidal.”
“I don’t think you are. It’s okay to think about it. It’s a part of death and the human condition. You’re being honest. That’s good.”
“I don’t think I could do it. I’d rather be around to see the naysayer’s faces when shit got better, you know?”
“I do. Lou, I’m going to prescribe you Remeron. It’s an anti-depressant that can be used to treat minor anxiety. It should help with your appetite and your sleep. You may experience increased dizziness. Let me know if it gets too bad. And always hang on to a railing.”
“Making jokes.”
“Let’s meet in two weeks and see how you’re feeling. It should take about a week to stabilize in your system, and I’d like you to have a week with it doing its job to see how you really react to it. Sound okay?”
It sounded fine. Dr. Khorashi wrote the script, and Lou filled it at the Walgreens on the ground floor of the building.
Medication and psychotherapy, he thought. I’m a fucking headcase.
THREE WEEKS LATER, Lou was sleeping and eating better. The dizziness was the same, but generally everything else seemed easier. Still no job, but he had an easier time writing cover letters. Also, his morning scotch benders had stopped.
He looked forward to his therapy sessions. They made him feel like he had control over his life again. Matters were in his hands and those of trained medical professionals. Khorashi was on Mondays at 3:00 p.m., Milner’s appointments were still Wednesday nights with an additional 9:00 p.m. slot for Thursdays, too. He figured the more therapy the better. Nip that anxiety shit in the bud, get off those meds and get back to good.
“You don’t think you’re overdoing it?” Michelle asked one night as they were crawling into bed. “Three times a week? Two doctors? Medications? Are you crazy?”
“According to my doctors, no, I’m not.”
“So what’s wrong with you?”
“Acute anxiety and depression due to circumstantial conditions.”
“What does that even mean?”
“It means that there’s a lot of shit going on that is impacting me negatively and I’m finding the best way to not let the stress of it add to the negativity.”
“You haven’t told anyone you’re seeing two shrinks, have you?”
“Chuck. Neil. My dad.”
“But none of our friends?”
“No. Why?”
“Nothing.”
“Why?”
“Well, I’m glad you feel like you’re getting the help you need, but it’s sort of a sign of weakness.”
“I’m sorry? This was your idea.”
“I know. I’m just wondering why you either can’t handle things on your own or why you can’t come to me with what’s troubling you.”
“I am handling things on my own. This is how. I’m using the professionals. And I can’t go to you with this kind of stuff. It’s not in your wheelhouse.”
“You’re my boyfriend. We’re supposed to get married. Your life and emotions are absolutely in my wheelhouse.”
“You don’t know what it’s like to be in my position. You can’t begin to relate to it. I’ve tried explaining it to you, but you don’t get it. For me, my career, my conditions out here, it’s not like yours. And you can’t empathize.”
“Are you kidding me? When I moved out here, I had nothing. My parents were furious with me and told me that they wouldn’t pay for anything. Not even a pencil. I had student loans and no friends and was terrified. I’d wake up in the middle of the night hyperventilating from stress. That happened for the first two years of law school. Don’t tell me that I don’t know what it’s like to struggle.”
“Michelle, your parents were pissed at you for a weekend. You were essentially hired with a career all laid out for you after two years and making a six-figure salary. Big loans? Yeah, that’s why you’re making what you’re making now. And that’s why it’s called compensation. You were stressed during law school? Everyone is stressed during law school. That gave you a support group. You had contemporaries who were all going through the shit with you. You all had each other. A miserably, wealthy band of barristers. I moved here after leaving my own kind of promising career to give it a go with you and with this city.”
“I told you not to move here just for me.”
“I didn’t, but we both know that you were a leading factor in the decision, come on. But listen, my move set me back a few years. I’ve never been this unemployed or unemployable. I’ve never experienced a recession like this. And I’m the only person I know who is going through this. I’m almost thirty years old, and I’m nowhere near where I used to be or want to be in my career. My contemporaries are employed and wealthy, something you regularly remind me of all too often. It’s not the same thing. Not at all.
“Your career has a clear path. College, law school, job, partnership, riches, retirement. I don’t have that. I don’t get to just graduate from school, get a job as a junior copywriter on the Nike and McDonald’s and Pepsi accounts and in seven years be eligible to become a partner in the firm. There is no predetermined path for a creative to follow. There is no six-figure salary by the age of twenty-four. Even a junior copywriter at Leo Burnett doesn’t make much more than maybe forty grand. And that’s if he hasn’t been canned during this recession. Plus! Plus, I’m a man. A white man. I’m the last thing any company is going to want to hire when the freezes thaw out. We’re finally getting our comeuppance. You’re a woman. You’re safe. Have you read anything about the layoffs? It’s the men that are getting the boot. Yeah, maybe because they pay women less, but I’d rather make less than nothing.”
Michelle lay in the bed with her head on the pillow facing Lou. She yawned. “Okay,” she said. Then she turned over and fell asleep.
Lou’s Remerol kicked in, and he fell asleep, too.

College basketball's preseason top 25, according to us
These are the 25 best teams in college basketball, according to us.
As the summer came to a close, it seemed like the main storylines of the 2017-18 college basketball season were pretty easy to peg.
Will Sean Miller finally get Arizona over the hump and into the Final Four?
Can Duke live up to its “super team” billing this season?
Will freshmen like Marvin Bagley, Michael Porter and Collin Sexton be as good as advertised?
All of those questions became secondary on Sept. 29. That’s the day the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York released a complaint detailing the findings of an FBI investigation into the ugly underbelly of college basketball. Since then, four assistant coaches have been arrested and charged, Hall of Fame coach Rick Pitino has been fired, and a handful of high-profile players have been held out of competition.
The FBI investigation isn’t going away, but it also isn’t going to keep college basketball’s 2017-18 season from happening. Beginning on Nov. 10, 351 teams will begin the long and beautiful journey towards March and the NCAA tournament. Here are the 25 teams that as of right now appear to be the class of that large group.
Odds by Mike, evens by Ricky
1. Duke
Photo by Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images
With Mike Krzyzewski fielding the youngest team of his career, it’s easy to see Duke in this top spot for a second straight preseason and wonder aloud: “Are we all making the same mistake again?”
The Blue Devils were a near-unanimous No. 1 choice before the start of a roller coaster season that ended with a surprising second round NCAA tournament loss to South Carolina. While recent history is certainly capable of repeating itself when this many freshmen are involved, there are equally compelling reasons to believe that the Dukies are going to live up to their preseason hype.
For starters, Coach K has a true point guard this season in the form of five-star freshman Trevon Duvall. Instead of forcing Grayson Allen or someone else to play out of position, Krzyzewski will have the comfort of having a true floor general run the show in 2017-18. Also there’s Allen himself, a gifted senior whose tumultuous college career up to this point should allow him to provide the type of leadership last season’s team was sorely lacking.
Sometimes we make things more complicated than they need to be, so let’s also toss this in: Marvin Bagley III is simply a more talented player than any of the guys who suited up for Krzyzewski last year. Fellow freshmen Wendell Carter and Gary Trent Jr. are great too, but it’s the super versatile 6’11 Bagley who truly sets this team apart from the rest of the country. At least on paper.
2. Arizona
Stephen R. Sylvanie-USA TODAY Sports
Can Sean Miller finally make the Final Four? It was already one of the biggest storylines in the sport before the FBI investigation that led to the arrest of long-time assistant Book Richardson and a cascade of recruits immediately decommiting from the program. But unlike other teams, Arizona seems set to ride out the investigation rather than dishing out precautionary suspensions, in the process showing how serious they are about winning right now, future sanctions be damned.
That’s a good thing, because college hoops fans deserve to see this team play. Allonzo Trier is one of the sport’s great individual scorers, a bullish two-guard who can get buckets from all three levels. Freshman center DeAndre Ayton is a certified unicorn whose combination of size, athleticism and skill could make him the most dominant big man in the country from day one. There’s also a potential breakout sophomore star in Rawle Alkins and a host of four- and five-star recruits who provide great depth.
Maybe the FBI investigation will eventually end Arizona’s season before it really starts. Until then, the Wildcats have as much on-court potential as any team in America.
3. Michigan State
By the time this season’s Final Four rolls around, it will have been 18 years since a Big Ten team last won a national title. Michigan State, the most recent team from the league to cut down the nets, is hoping to be the same one that ends the drought.
The moment Miles Bridges opted to turn down the chance to be a lottery pick in favor of playing one more season for Tom Izzo he made himself the national Player of the Year favorite and his team one of the top choices to win it all. Despite missing a healthy chunk of his freshman season because of injury, Bridges was remarkably productive in his college debut. He did a little bit of everything for the Spartans in 2016-17, averaging 16.9 points, 8.3 rebounds, 2.1 assists per game.
Also returning to East Lansing this season are fellow sophomores Nick Ward (13.9 ppg), Joshua Langford (6.9 ppg) and Cassius Winston (6.7 ppg), who are all expected to take steps forward in year two. Five-star freshman Jaren Jackson should be one of college basketball’s most talented newcomers, and he’ll have frontcourt tutelage in the form of senior forwards Ben Carter and Gavin Schilling, who both missed all of last season because of injuries.
4. Kansas
Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports
Kansas checks just about every box: a productive senior point guard, shooters on the wing, a high-upside freshman big man and one of the sport’s most dependable coaches. The Jayhawks win the Big 12 every year and you’re a fool if you bet against this team doing it again this season.
Devonte Graham played the role of supporting actor last season behind Frank Mason, but he’ll be the leading man now. Graham is a good shooter, a solid defender and the type of veteran ball handler every team needs in March. Svi Mykhailiuk, LaGerald Vick and five-star transfer Malik Newman will knock down shots from the perimeter, while Billy Preston and Udoka Azubuike form a huge and talented front line.
Kansas is the rare program capable of making a run at the Final Four every year. This season is no exception.
5. Villanova
With North Carolina going to back-to-back title games and cutting down the nets last April, what Villanova has done the past two seasons has sort of been swept under the rug. The Wildcats, of course, beat the Tar Heels at the buzzer of the 2016 national title game, and were the No. 1 overall seed heading into last season’s Big Dance with a 31-3 record.
All-American Josh Hart and March Madness icon Kris Jenkins are both gone, but the good times should continue to roll on for Jay Wright and company in 2017-18. Junior point guard Jalen Brunson is a legitimate national Player of the Year candidate, Mikal Bridges has been considered ‘Nova’s best NBA prospect since he arrived in Philly, and former five-star big man Omari Spellman is finally eligible and ready to provide Wright with a dominant post presence.
Toss in the expected improvement of guys like Donte DiVincenzo and Eric Paschall as well as the return of Phil Booth, and you once again have a team that should be right in the thick of the national championship hunt come March.
6. Kentucky
Mark Zerof-USA TODAY Sports
John Calipari is the greatest recruiter alive, and his philosophy on the the trail has never been more transparent. Calipari wants the biggest, faster player at any cost, and that’s how he got this roster, one that feels like it sacrifices ‘fit’ in the pursuit of cold, hard talent.
Kentucky has at least eight five-star recruits on the roster, led by athletic wings Hamidou Diallo and Kevin Knox. P.J. Washington is a bulldog at the four, Nick Richards is an athletic blocker at the five and Quade Green should provide a steadying presence at point. And that’s just the freshmen.
The big question for Kentucky is if they can knock down shots from the perimeter. Size and athleticism should again win the Wildcats the SEC, but it’s hard to advance in March without reliable three-point threats. Perhaps Diallo and/or Knox turns into that type of player. Maybe Kentucky will just ride offensive rebounds all the way to San Antonio. Even with all that talent, this team still feels like it could go boom-or-bust.
7. Miami
Enthusiasm for Hurricane hoops has rarely, if ever, been higher than it is heading into the 2017-18 season. Miami won 10 games in the ACC last season and return a higher percentage of minutes (67 percent) from a year ago than any other team in the conference. Headlining that core group of returnees are all-conference caliber players Bruce Brown and Ja’Quan Newton.
Miami also brings in the best recruiting class of the Jim Larrnaga era, one headlined by McDonald’s All-American Lonnie Walker. If the Hurricanes can avoid the noise that could come with being named in the FBI’s September complaint, there’s no excuse for this team not to finish in the top four of the ACC and earn a top four seed in the NCAA tournament.
8. USC
Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY Sports
Like Arizona, USC is fielding a team with a real chance at the Final Four while also having to deal with the shadow of the FBI investigation. Tony Bland, arrested in the federal probe, was a key, beloved assistant for the Trojans who will be missed. That speaks nothing of the two unnamed players mentioned in the investigation who could eventually be suspended.
If USC has its full complement of players, this squad is incredibly deep and experienced at every position. Jordan McLaughlin, Elijah Stewart and De’Anthoy Melton lead an embarrassment of riches on the perimeter. Chimezie Metu is an elite athlete at center and Bennie Boatright is a gifted scorer as the stretch forward next to him. The bench is stacked too, with Duke transfer Derryck Thornton and freshman shooter Chuck O’Bannon leading the way.
USC finally has the athletes to play the fast, loose style Andy Enfield has always desired. The Trojans are going to be a ton of fun ... unless the FBI or the NCAA gets in the way.
9. Florida
For anybody who doubted it, Mike White proved once and for all last season that there would be life for Florida basketball after Billy Donovan. The Gators won 27 games and were one victory away from achieving the program’s sixth trip to the Final Four. That trip could easily come this season thanks to a combination of key returnees and key additions.
Junior shooting guard KeVaughn Allen is back after averaging 14.0 ppg last season. He’ll have backcourt help in the form of senior point guard Chris Chiozza, the buzzer-beating hero from last year’s Sweet 16 win over Wisconsin. Down low, the Gators will be blessed (at some point) by the return of senior center John Egbunu, who tore his ACL last February. Florida also brings in grad transfer Egor Koulechov, who averaged 18.2 points and 8.9 rebounds last season at Rice.
10. Wichita State
Thomas Joseph-USA TODAY Sports
Wichita State is in its first year in the American, but it shouldn’t have needed a bigger conference for validation. This is one of the most dependable non-blue blood programs in the country under Gregg Marshall. He’s done it again this year: in the shadow of the Fred VanVleet-Ron Baker years, Gregg Marshall has built another team with legitimate title aspirations.
The Shockers are again led by a pair of studs in sophomore point guard Landry Shamet and junior forward Markis McDuffie. There’s just one problem: both are currently battling foot injuries. The good news for Wichita State is that there’s senior depth all over the roster, most notably big man Shaq Morris and shooter Conner Frankamp. A new conference might provide new challenges, but expect the Shockers to be healthy and cohesive again by March.
11. North Carolina
Photo by Sara D. Davis/Getty Images
The reigning national champions have a shot at making it back to the Final Four for a third consecutive season. Last season’s Final Four Most Outstanding Player, Joel Berry, is back, as are fellow senior Theo Pinson and Elite Eight hero Luke Maye. The task for the Tar Heels is going to be to find a way to replace the remarkable amount of production that left Chapel Hill after last season.
The backcourt should be fine once Berry returns from his hand injury, but its the frontcourt where Roy Williams needs some guys to emerge. The Tar Heels were successful the last two years largely because they led the nation in rebounding margin and offensive rebounding percentage. Williams will likely ask Pinson and talented Pitt transfer Cameron Johnson, both natural wings, to play more on the block to help out the very green UNC big men.
12. West Virginia
Stan Szeto-USA TODAY Sports
West Virginia isn’t beating anyone by surprise at this point. Bob Huggins is going to deploy a vicious full court press operated by a team of hard working, under-recruited athletes. Scoring might be a struggle, but no matter: every game against the Mountaineers is a war, and no one is coming out of it feeling good about themselves.
This year is no different. Jevon Carter is back as one of the country’s top returning guards. Daxter Miles Jr. is a tough and steady senior and Esa Ahmad is a high upside big man who will be valuable once he returns from his first semester academic suspension. There’s nothing overwhelming about West Virginia’s talent level, but they always seem to find a way to grind out wins.
13. Louisville
There may not be a more difficult team in college basketball to gauge right now than Louisville. On paper, the Cardinals are unquestionably a top 15 team. Quentin Snider has been a steady presence at the point guard position for three years now, and junior forward Deng Adel has the potential to be a First Team All-ACC performer.
The issue, of course, is that the team lost its Hall of Fame head coach just three days before its first practice. It’s hard to imagine that, and all of the other off-the-court distractions, not having at least some effect on the team’s 2017-18 performance.
14. Cincinnati
Aaron Doster-USA TODAY Sports
Cincinnati annually fields an elite defensive team that struggles to score. The Bearcats finally made strides towards balance last year when they finished No. 34 in offensive efficiency, the first time they’ve cracked the top 50 since Mick Cronin took over in 2007. There’s reason to believe this team can be even better offensively.
Junior off guard Jacob Evans is a three-level scorer and long defender. Kyle Washington is an inside-out big man who can heat up quick, while sophomore Jarron Cumberland is an ace shooter on the wing. Tough, athletic forward Gary Clarke is still here captain the defense. Cincy will always be a team that grinds out games, but there’s enough talent here to talk yourself into a deep March run.
15. UCLA
Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports
The Lonzo Ball era was brief but eventful, as the Bruins went from 15-17 in 2015-16 to one of the most exciting teams in the country a year ago. The good times don’t have to be over just because Ball is now suiting up for the Lakers.
Double figure scorers Aaron Holiday and Thomas Welsh are both back, and Steve Alford has also welcomed in a top five recruiting class. Headlining that crop of freshmen is five-star point guard Jaylen Hands. Hands might not be as flashy running the show as Ball was, but he has the potential to be every bit as effective in terms of producing wins.
16. Seton Hall
Vincent Carchietta-USA TODAY Sports
Seton Hall has been building for this particular season for four years. The Pirates will feature four senior starters who have helped the program reach consecutive NCAA tournaments after a nine-year drought, but they still haven’t broken through with a win yet.
This team is good enough to go on a run. Angel Delgado is a double-double machine who should be one of the best front court players in America. Khadeen Carrington and Desi Rodriguez are high scoring guards, and sophomore Myles Powell potentially provides some much needed outside shooting. The Pirates lack a natural point guard, but they’re as tough and experienced as any team.
17. Xavier
Stan Szeto-USA TODAY Sports
No one is surprised any more when Xavier is making noise during the month of March. That said, it’s still staggering to see that over the past 10 years, the Musketeers have advanced to the NCAA tournament’s Sweet 16 six times. The most recent of those appearances came a year ago, when Chris Mack’s team pulled three upsets before falling to Gonzaga in the West Regional final.
Despite all the program’s postseason success, Xavier has still never experienced a Final Four. Musketeer fans are hopeful that streak will end in a few months thanks to the return of All-American candidate Trevon Bluiett, who poured in 18.5 ppg last season. He and senior J.P. Macura should make up one of the best backcourts in the country.
18. Minnesota
Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports
The Gophers had the biggest single-season turnaround in college basketball last year, going from an 8-win team to a 24-win No. 5 seed in the NCAA tournament. Almost everyone returns, including elite shot blocker Reggie Lynch and senior point guard Nate Mason. Amir Coffey, a smooth 6’8 sophomore wing, is the most talented scorer on the team and should end up as one of the better players in the Big Ten. There’s also Mr. JellyFam himself, Isaiah Washington, creating offense off the bench. Minnesota won’t surprise anyone this year.
19. Notre Dame
Mark Konezny-USA TODAY Sports
Notre Dame is in the midst of one of the most successful stretches in program history, one which appears set to continue this season. The Fighting Irish have won 82 games since the start of the 2014-15 campaign, the most they’ve ever won over a three-year stretch. They advanced to the Elite Eight in both 2015 and 2016, and won a game in last year’s Big Dance before being ousted by West Virginia.
The good times figure to keep rolling in 2017-18 thanks largely to the presence of preseason First Team All-American Bonzie Colson. The senior forward was the only player in the ACC to finish last season averaging a double-double (17.5 ppg, 10.2 rpg). He’ll join forces with senior point guard Matt Farrell to form one of the most potent inside-outside combos in college basketball.
20. St. Mary's
Kelvin Kuo-USA TODAY Sports
Is this the year St. Mary’s finally knocks off Gonzaga from the top of the WCC? It feels like it. The Gaels have a legitimate star in Aussie center Jock Londale, a steady lead guard in Emmett Naar, and a high-impact transfer in wing Cullen Neal. There’s shooters everywhere, and one of the country’s best offensive minds, Randy Bennett, finding ways to get them all open.
If the ‘Zags beat this team three times again this year, it will be a real accomplishment.
21. Purdue
Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports
It’s ever easy to replace a consensus First Team All-American like Caleb Swanigan. It helps when you’re returning the other four starters from the season before and six of that squad’s top seven scorers.
Even without Swanigan, Purdue figures to be a load to handle in the post. The Boilermakers have five players who are 6’9 taller, led by 7’2 center Isaac Haas. They also have a preseason All-Big Ten player in senior forward Vince Edwards, and an all-conference caliber guard in Carsen Edwards. It’s been 11 years since a Big Ten team won back-to-back regular season conference titles, but Purdue has the pieces to at least make a run at ending that streak.
22. Northwestern
Amber Searls-USA TODAY Sports
Northwestern as a preseason top-25 team? Believe it. After making the NCAA tournament for the first time in program history last year, the Wildcats return every key starter from a team that gave national runners-up Gonzaga a real run for its money in the round of 32. Bryant McIntosh is a productive senior at point guard, Vic Law profiles as one of the Big Ten’s best two-way wings and Dererk Pardon can be a monster on the inside.
The novelty of Northwestern basketball being good is over. Now it’s about building something that lasts.
23. Virginia Tech
Anthony Gruppuso-USA TODAY Sports
Virginia Tech broke a decade-long NCAA tournament drought in 2017. A year later, Buzz Williams appears to have a team capable of taking the program to the (modern) Sweet 16 for the first time in history.
The team returns all five starters from a season ago, but also must replace its two leading scorers from last season in the graduated Zach LeDay (16.5 ppg) and Seth Allen (13.3 ppg). No one ever accused Williams of being conventional. The upside is that the Hokies figure to have a fully healthy Chris Clarke, who was the team’s leading rebounder (7.3 rpg) and third-leading scorer (11.4 ppg) when he tore his ACL in mid-February. The Hokies ended the season just 5-4 after Clarke went down.
24. Gonzaga
Stan Szeto-USA TODAY Sports
It’s easier to talk about who’s not here, of course, after last year’s national runners-up lost a huge chunk of their rotation. Credit Mark Few for still putting out a team that will compete. Johnathan Williams and Killian Tillie will form a dependable and productive front court, while junior guard Josh Perkins will look to push his game to new heights without Nigel Williams-Goss around.
The most interesting player here is Rui Hachimura, a Japanese import with an NBA-ready body but raw skill set. If he puts it together this season as a sophomore, the ‘Zags will be formidable once again.
25. Missouri
Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports
LSU couldn’t make it to the NCAA tournament with Ben Simmons and Washington couldn’t even win 10 games with Markelle Fultz. That doesn’t mean there’s no hope for Missouri to have a big season with the similarly gifted Michael Porter Jr.
For starters, Porter Jr. won’t have to do it alone. His younger brother, and fellow five-star recruit, Jontay, helps headline a five-man recruiting class that ranked in the top five nationally. Toss in a handful of key returnees and a proven new head coach in Cuonzo Martin, and it’s not ridiculous to peg Missouri as a team capable of going from eight wins to top 25 caliber in the span of only a year.

THE FROGS
You can feel the end of summer in the air, and one summer event that stands out in Pittsburgh is the Annual FROGS Formal. On July 15 at the DoubleTree in Monroeville the FROGS and friends celebrated the centerpiece of their annual week of festivities.
#gallery-0-9 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-9 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } #gallery-0-9 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-9 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
FROGS OFFICERS—Tom Burley, past president; Ralph Barnett, treasurer; Charles Franklin, secretary; Roland J. Coston- Criswell, president; Tony Thompson, financial secretary; Clarence Curry, past president; and Ted Roberts, chaplain
WOMEN BEHIND THE FROGS
ELECTED OFFICIALS WELL REPRESENTED—Ed Gainey, Jake Wheatley, Dewitt Walton, Valerie McDonald Roberts, R. Daniel Lavelle, Ricky Burgess and Dwan Walker
FROGS president Roland J. Coston-Criswell said this year FROGS week consisted of a game night, the formal and a picnic for the entire family. All events are opportunities for the FROGS to come together and have a good time.
#gallery-0-10 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-10 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } #gallery-0-10 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-10 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */

FORMAL COMMITTEE—Chuck Franklin III, Chucky Franklin IV and Antoine Smalls
THE LOGANS—Jennifer and Mike
The club was established in 1910 and there isn’t a fraternity, sorority or club that can boast a charter established before the FROGS. “The high purpose of the newly-created club was to have fun.” Those words said by Wendell G. Freeland ring as loud today as they did written in 1960, said Coston-Criswell, and tonight is an evening to have fun. For those who do not know, FROGS is an acronym that means, “Friendly Rivalry Often Generates Success.” Wilbur C. Douglass named the club the FROGS and registered the name in Harrisburg.

Episode 96 : A City United
"It's not the world, it's the people in it..."
- LaPeace
What a month it has ended up being. Manchester suffered a terrible blow, and the figurative reverberations will be felt for a long time to come. It has been something to see how people have come together in the wake of the attack, and hopefully that spirit is something that can be carried forward.
While I wasn't able to completely re-do this month's show, I hope it's a pleasant listen for anyone who has the time to give it an ear. Amongst this episode's tracks we have a couple of Manchester tunes, some beautiful instrumentals, and an uplifting ending. Enjoy.

Playlist/Notes
Kendrick Lamar : DNA
"I got loyalty, got royalty inside my DNA". Absolute fire. The Mike Will Made-It beat is dark and banging and from the very first line, Kendrick is on point. A beast of a track from the new, appropriately-titled album "DAMN." Definitely worth checking the video starring Don Cheadle too!
[Lex Luger] Kid Ink : Blackout (Instrumental)
I was struggling to find an instrumental in my library to fit in here but then thought about which producers might have something to fit, and Lex Luger, Mr."Hard In Da Paint", was my first idea. To be honest, I went to go and have a listen to the Kid Ink track and...I didn't rate it. All about the beat here, thanks to a mixtape of instrumentals on Datpiff!
Devin The Dude : Acoustic Levitation
Devin is a bit of a southern legend, starting off with Odd Squad and Facemob before commencing a long solo career. He's noted for bringing his sense of humour to his music, but that's not the vibe on this cut, the title track from his ninth solo LP. It's a fairly serious number with Devin in reflective mood about the world over a beat produced by his old Odd Squad running mate Rob Quest, who cooks up a solid 808 groove.
Children of Zeus : I Want You
The first time I heard this, I stomped over to DJ Chris E and demanded (ok, not like that ;) ) he tell me what it was immediately! It had only just been released on the CoZ Soundcloud account, and I got my download as soon as I got back home. This is a bodywork-rattling, baby-making slow jam out of Manchester that deserves all the listens. Vocally, it's a Tyler Daly solo, and as much as I love the lead vocal I think his backing styles on the hook put this one over the top.
Dr Dre ft. Jill Scott, Jon Connor, and Anderson .Paak : For The Love Of Money
One of my highlights from Dr Dre's "Compton" LP, a piece inspired by "Foe Tha Love Of Money" by Bone Thugs-N-Harmony. This has some of the foremost soul vocalists of recent-ish times taking a starring role, with Jill Scott bringing the gentleness and Anderson contributing a rougher tone. The origins of the track are that it was the first beat made by New Jersey native Cardiak when he moved to Los Angeles, and Jon Connor heard it and wrote his lyrics to it - it was only after that that it found its way to Dre for it to become what you hear now.
MC Eiht : Just Lean
This Compton veteran has carved out a long career, and it's amazing to think that "Affiliated" is his eleventh solo album. Add that to the Compton's Most Wanted LPs, and you have someone who deserves a ton of respect. He's not talking about anything super complex on this weed anthem, but he does definitely slip in some clever references - Ice Cube and UGK, to name but two. The longtime CMW producer Tha Chill collaborates with the D&B producer DJ Subflo for an eerie, creeping track with those echoing snares adding to the dissociative feel.
UNKLE : 24 Frames (Redux)
I can't remember how I exactly found this one - I hadn't been up-to-date with UNKLE's output after the "Psyence Fiction" album, but heard this orchestral killer on Spotify and have been dying to find a place to slot it into the show for months!
Count Bass D : Subwoofer (Dumile)
Somewhere right now, Count Bass D is making a beat. Crafting. Refining. He's sixteen solo albums in, not to mention EPs and compilations, but right here were back to his third, 2002's "Dwight Spitz", now available via Bandcamp. A tribute to the fallen DJ Subroc of KMD and also paying homage to Hip-Hop luminaries of times past, this is almost certainly my favourite tune on the LP. For a little listening detail, check how the drum pattern changes up on the approach to the hook, doubling up on the kicks and snares - very nicely done.
Mothership Connection : Space Junkin'
Manchester's Mothership Connection have been doing a stack of live appearances over the past few years, but as they're a collective of solo artists and member of other groups, it's taken a while for them to release their own product. we finally have their debut EP, "This Train Goes To Junkleberry Junction". All tracks are produced by Mankub, and this one is on a bit of an Apollo 13 vibe while the crew of MCs spill lyrics all over the equipment!
Ilajide ft. Propaine : In The House
The man behind the beats for Clear Soul Forces stays producing quality material. This particular piece is on the "Five Week Heet III" Bandcamp release, and after the quiet intro groove (hard to hear on the mix in/out, actually) it just thumps along. I definitely need to hear this man doing extra work outside the camp. Actually, how about Ilajide and Camp Lo...?
J Dilla ft. LaPeace, Moe Dirdee, & Seven The General : Say My Name
One of those songs that pops into my head fairly regularly but which I don't play even for myself as much as it deserves. Nothing esoteric here, just dope rhymes over an old Dilla beat - that's enough. Catch this on the "Rebirth Of Detroit" album.
The ARE : Midnight (Instrumental)
It's been a while since our last visit, but we return to The ARE's reworking of samples used by A Tribe Called Quest on the "Midnight Marauders" LP. This one is a re-imagining of one of my favourites, but crashing along with a vibe of its own :)
Ka : Up Against Goliath
I was having a listen to Ka's brilliant "Grief Pedigree" this month and found myself rewinding this track. It may at one level be a song about the street game, it could be an anthem for anyone up against the odds. DJs, for full thematic effect you could follow this with UGK's "Pocket Full Of Stones", which is also pretty close speed wise too. #yourewelcome
Damian Marley & Nas : Friends
It's been a while since "Distant Relatives" was released, and every so often a song gets shortlisted for the podcast before getting dropped at the last minute. This time though, it makes the cut. It's not often that Nas doesn't put in the best lyrical performance of all the vocalists on a track he appears on, but I think Damian's performance is superior here! Damian also handles the production, which is well-done, except that the periodic sloppiness on the two and four beats makes it sound like yours truly is making mixing mistakes :)
Yusef Rumperfield : Sparklin
From the Tall Black Guy Productions label come the instrumental stylings of Yusef Rumperfield on his "Jazz In Motion" album. I picked this chilled-out number because sometimes, there's no room for words.
Portishead : It Could Be Sweet
An old favourite from Portishead's debut "Dummy". Beth Gibbons' heartfelt scratchy-throated vocals go nicely on top of the drum machine beat and some subtle keyboards.
Air : High Point
The B-side to the "Once Upon A Time" single, and once again proving Chuck D right about the flip side, this is a beautiful instrumental.
Thundercat ft. Kenny Loggins and Michael McDonald : Show You The Way
A great song to end on, and one I've been playing over and over since I bought Thundercat's "Drunk" album. This bassist, producer, and singer is a really unique gem, and as is somehow befitting of a man who's worked with artists as different as Suicidal Tendencies and Kendrick Lamar, he's a lover of the R&B-infused jazz fusion styles of the 70s and 80s. When Kenny Loggins called him up to say that he and Michael McDonald would be interested in collaborating, he rightly flipped out! The combination on this uplifting cut is a straight classic to me, and I think with the pain of the last month, this is a fitting place to close the episode.
Please remember to support the artists you like! The purpose of putting the podcast out and providing the full tracklist is to try and give some light, so do use the songs on each episode as a starting point to search out more material. If you have Spotify in your country it's a great way to explore, but otherwise there's always Youtube and the like. Seeing your favourite artists live is the best way to put money in their pockets, and buy the vinyl/CDs/downloads of the stuff you like the most!
Check out this episode!

Marvin Bagley III's recruiting decision will change college basketball's national championship picture
Duke, USC and UCLA are all vying for Marvin Bagley III. These are the options for the ultra-talented big man.
The most coveted high school basketball recruit in the country will announce his college decision on Monday night. Marvin Bagley III is expected to choose between Duke, USC and UCLA after taking visits to all three schools over the past month.
Officially, Bagley is still a member of the 2018 class, but he has reportedly filed paperwork to reclassify up a year and play college basketball this season. If he’s ruled eligible by the NCAA, his presence would immediately alter the national championship picture.
What makes Bagley so special? He’s a 6’11 lefty big man with top-end speed and agility who thrives finishing inside and cleaning the glass. He’s also flashed a projectable outside shooting stroke and some ball handling ability. He averaged 25.8 points, 14.9 rebounds and 3.1 blocks per game this season on Nike’s EYBL circuit.
Duke, USC and UCLA would all love to have him. Here’s our breakdown of how Bagley would fit each of his three finalists, with a prediction at the end on where he’ll end up.
USC
Early top 25 ranking: No. 11
Projected lineup with Bagley
C Chinzie Metu
PF Marvin Bagley III
SF Bennie Boatright
SG De’Anthony Melton
PG Jordan McLaughlin
Bench: SG Elijah Stewart, PG Derryck Thornton, SF Shaqquan Aaron, G/F Chuck O’Bannon
Andy Enfield isn’t just the man behind Dunk City anymore. He’s built USC into one of the deepest and most experienced teams in the country. The Trojans will be a trendy Final Four pick whether they add Bagley or not. With him, they might be the national championship favorite.
The USC roster is already an embarrassment of riches. There’s four starting caliber guards with seniors Jordan McLaughlin and Elijah Stewart, breakout sophomore candidate De’Anthony Melton and Duke transfer Derryck Thornton. There’s a versatile and athletic front court in place with Chinzie Metu and Bennie Boatright.
Basically the only thing missing is the type of elite talent who could be taken at the top of the NBA draft. That’s where Bagley comes in.
USC is fully aware of the stakes here. They’ve put on the full court press to recruit Bagley, even offering a scholarship to his 7-year-old brother to get in the family’s good graces. It might seem like another shameless recruiting tactic, but Enfield knows how incredible this team can be if it adds Bagley.
Enfield plays a freewheeling, uptempo style that is a perfect match for Bagley’s athleticism. The Trojans might not have the history or prestige of Duke, but they look like the team that offers him the best chance to win during his short stay at the college level.
Duke

Early top 25 ranking: No. 11
Projected lineup with Bagley
C Wendell Carter Jr.
PF Marvin Bagley III
SF Grayson Allen
SG Gary Trent Jr.
PG Trevon Duval
Bench: C Marques Bolden, PF Javin DeLaurier, SF Jordan Tucker, SG Alex O'Connell
It’s the same story with Duke every year now: a bunch of productive players leave for the NBA and are replaced by a new batch of top recruits. Luke Kennard, Jayson Tatum, Harry Giles and Frank Jackson are out. Trevon Duval, Gary Trent Jr. and Wendell Carter Jr. are in.
Add Bagley to the equation and Duke will again look like the most talented team in the country at the start of the season.
Power forward has always been the most important position for Coach K since he embraced the one-and-done. That’s where he slid Jabari Parker and Justise Winslow and Tatum to give Duke a more dynamic four-out offensive look. Right now, he doesn’t have a player on the roster with that type of skill set. As things stand, Duke is probably starting two traditional big men in Carter and Bolden in the front court. You know Coach K badly wants a more versatile athlete in that spot.
Duke has been targeting Bagley as a 2017 recruit from the beginning, even reportedly “guiding him through the process” of reclassification. Coach K knows he already has an elite athlete at point guard in Duval. In Grayson Allen, he has a senior who is a proven go-to scorer. Carter should be a double-double machine.
The only thing missing is a player like Bagley. When it comes to recruiting, it’s never smart to bet against Duke.
UCLA
Photo by Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images
Early top 25 ranking: No. 25
Projected lineup with Bagley
C Thomas Welsch
PF Marvin Bagley III
SF Kris Wilkes
SG Aaron Holiday
PG Jaylen Hands
Bench: SF Price Ali, PF Cody Riley, C Gyorgy Goloman, F Jalen Hill, G LiAngelo Ball
UCLA was a train wreck in the season before Lonzo Ball showed up on campus. With him, the Bruins were immediately one of the most successful and entertaining teams in the country. Steve Alford’s big challenge is to keep that momentum going.
If he gets a commitment from Bagley, there will be no doubt he’s accomplished that.
You have to credit Alford for the recruiting resurgence in Westwood. He’s already bringing in a six-player class that ranks No. 5 in the country, per 247 Sports. That includes a pair of McDonald’s All-Americans in Jaylen Hands and Kris Wilkes and two talented big men in Cody Riley and Jalen Hill.
The Bruins are lucky to have a senior like Aaron Holiday around to provide stability on both ends of the court. So much of this season’s success would appear to rest on Hands, who will serve as Ball’s replacement at the point. Hands is quick athlete who can finish above the rim, but he doesn’t play with the poise Ball did. Then again, almost no one does.
This UCLA team should hang around the top-25 all year without Bagley. With him, it’s a potential top-10 squad that can make a run in March.
Prediction
Duke feels like the safest bet here. It’s the program with the most prestige. It’s the program that has proven it can turn you into a top NBA draft pick after just one season. It’s also the school that has been at the forefront of Bagley’s push to play college basketball next season.
Still, I’m going with USC. Bagley has been on the west coast all his life and has spent the last two years in Los Angeles. The Trojans offer an uptempo system, a deep and talented roster and the opportunity for Bagley to create his own story rather than simply being the next in a long line of Duke one-and-dones.
Recruiting is as much about timing as it is about luck. USC has the pieces in place to win a championship this year. If Bagley joins the mix, you’re looking at the preseason favorites.
