Itazuke Air Base is a former United States Air Force base located near Fukuoka City, in Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan. It was established in 1944 during World War II and was an important strategic airfield for the U.S. during the Korean War and the Cold War era. It served as a hub for various military operations and housed different aircraft, including fighters, bombers, and reconnaissance planes.
In 1972, as part of the U.S.-Japan Mutual Security Treaty, the base was returned to Japanese control and was subsequently renamed Fukuoka Airport. Today, Fukuoka Airport operates as a dual-use facility, serving both civilian flights and limited Japan Air Self-Defense Force operations.
———————
Komaki Air Base, situated in Aichi Prefecture, Japan, was a significant military installation for both the Japanese Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) and the United States Air Force (USAF). Originally built in 1944, it played a crucial role in World War II as a Japanese military airfield.
After the war, the U.S. utilized Komaki Air Base during the occupation of Japan. In the 1950s and 1960s, it served as a key USAF base for strategic operations in East Asia during the Korean War and the Vietnam War eras. The base housed various aircraft and supported military activities during the Cold War.
Similar to other bases in Japan, Komaki Air Base underwent changes due to the U.S.-Japan security agreements. As part of these agreements and shifting geopolitical dynamics, the base's role gradually diminished. In 1967, control of the base was transferred to the Japanese government, and it became a dual-use facility, combining civilian and military air operations.
Today, what was once Komaki Air Base is jointly operated as Nagoya Airfield and Chubu Centrair International Airport, serving as a major commercial airport while still accommodating some JASDF activities.

The Sky Deck
I’ve been to Chubu Centrair International Airport (Nagoya) before, I never got the chance to explore it… but during my recent Japan trip, I had to wait at the airport for 4 hours for my uncle and cousin to fly in...
And I found out that it has a Sky Deck, a park at the roof of the airport terminal. You can watch planes land and takeoff from the Sky Deck!
I thought the Yokohama [Port] International Terminal Park was unique. Apparently, turning roofs of transportation facilities is a thing here... Baka naman gusto niyong gawing ganito NAIA (Ninoy Aquino International Airport) Ramon S. Ang? Haha.
But I feel even if the new NAIA will have this, it will be charging a hefty fee for the access. That’s just the downside of letting a private entity operate a public property.
