Recently Viewed: a still place

Recently, I’ve noticed that some amateur critics online (particularly on Twitter, but elsewhere, as well) tend to evaluate films as though they are mere objects—trivial things that spontaneously materialize without any human intervention whatsoever, indistinguishable from a rock or a puddle of water. I frequently find myself arguing against this reductive mindset; in my opinion, a movie is synonymous with the creative process that produces it. Every frame contains a multitude of deliberate artistic choices—framing, composition, blocking, set dressing, performance, et cetera. Even the simplest story is the culmination of countless subtle decisions.

Consider, for example, Christopher Makoto Yogi’s a still place, a non-narrative feature that is, according to the Criterion Channel’s synopsis:

…a filmed meditation at Akiko Masuda’s zendo on Hawai’i Island that listens to the island awaken as the sun rises.

Indeed, the film appears to be elegantly straightforward in its cinematic ambitions at first glance. Its stylistic approach epitomizes minimalism. For the majority of its 65-minute running time, there are a grand total of two shots—a wide master and a closeup—between which the director cuts very sparingly. Both the camera and its subjects remain static. The lighting is entirely natural; initially, Masuda herself is almost completely invisible, enveloped by darkness until the sun gradually illuminates the room. The relative inertia of the imagery emphasizes the dynamic sonic landscape: birds sing, wind chimes ring, and raindrops patter on the windowpane—a rich symphony of ambient sounds.

It is, to phrase it bluntly, not a terribly exciting motion picture; in fact, there are those that would dismissively describe it as “boring.” The glacial pace and lack of visual flair, however, are not only obviously intentional, but also pregnant with deeper thematic significance. Meditation, after all, revolves around stillness and awareness; by observing Masuda’s quiet morning ritual without commentary or interruption, a still place immerses the audience in the sensory experience of meditation. The movie’s pervasively monotonous, tranquil atmosphere might cause an impatient or unadventurous viewer’s mind to wander—but isn’t noticing one’s own distraction a kind of mindfulness in and of itself?

In short: the perfect marriage of form and function.

I'm going to infodump on your post, apologies. If you love Last Unicorn, I highly recommend "Flight of Dragons" a TV movie made by Rakin Bass production company. Arthur Rankin and Julian Bass are best known for their holiday stop motion animation specials. You know: Rudolph the Rednose Reindeer, Santa Claus is Coming to Town and many many more. In the 70's they pivoted to epic fantasy with 1977's the Hobbit. At that time Rankin/Bass had firmly established a collaborative partnership with Topcraft Animation for their hand drawn animation projects.

Topcraft was founded by a Toei Animation (DragonBall, and many others) Studio producer. Following the Hobbit they would go on to produce. Nausicaa and the Valley of the Wind. After that Topcraft split into Studio Ghibli & Pacific Animation Corporation. I doubt I need to list the output of Studio Ghibli. Pacific Animation Corporation worked on Thunder Cats and Silver Hawks. PAC was bought by Disney and merged (remerged?) With Studio Ghibli. Some PAC animators worked on Naruto & Bleach.

Getting back to the Last Unicorn. The opening credits are based on The Hunt of the Unicorn tapestry series. Original music was performed by the band America. They had several radio hit singles including Horse With No Name, Tin Man, You Can Do Magic and others. America was produced by George Martin who had produced The Beatles.

Now the Cast!

The Unicorn: Mia Farrow most famous for Rosemary's Baby. Her son Ronan covered the #MeToo movement and other social issues in American culture. Mai's adopted daughter Soon-Yi married Mia's ex Woddy Allen (a creepy old man IMO).

Prince Lir: Jeff Bridges - The Dude from Big Lebowski. He is the son of Lloyd Bridges and the brother of Beau Bridges. Other Notable roles include Kevin Flynn in the Tron series, the titular role in 1984's Starman and Rooster Cogburn in the Coen Brothers remake of True Grit.

Schmendrick the Magician: Alan Arkin, who passed away in June 2023. His son Adam is also an actor. He began his career in 1967. You've probably seen him in something.

King Haggard: Christopher motherfucking LEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!! Saruman the White in LotR/Hobbit. WWII veteran of the bureau of Ungentlemany Warfare. The Man With the Golden Gun, Count Dooku, Hammer Horror legend, started a heavy metal band in his 80's.

Trivia specific to Last Unicorn: Christopher Lee performed the King Haggard role on the German language audio track.

Other performers in small roles:

The Butterfly: Robert Klien, actor and stand-up comedian. Been around since 1970. Kind of a big guy for such a small role.

The Skelton: the drunk skeleton was portrayed by Rene Arberjonois AKA Odo from Star Trek Deep Space Nine and the voice of the French Chef in Disney's Little Mermaid.

The Cat: Donald Messick was a voice acting legend he started his career in 1949. Bigger roles include Scooby-Doo & Boo-Boo in Yogi Bear cartoons.

More on The Cat: I could not possibly omit the following details on this character! He talks...with a Salty Sea Dog Accent!!! He has a peg leg and an eye patch! A goddamn pirate Cat! I love this guy so much!

Dans les pratiques occultes, il y a la recherche de la guérison et du bien-être et/ou la connaissance et la divination.

On distingue trois grandes racines aux pratiques occultes : 1. le yoga, la place du corps et les états modifiés de consciences ; 2. le magnétisme et la notion d’énergie ; 3. la magie, la guérison, la divination.

1. Le Yoga

Jusqu’au XIXe siècle, en Occident, on ne connaissait pas les religions orientales. C’est la société de théosophie, issue du spiritisme, fondée par Helena Blavatsky (proche de la franc-maçonnerie) et le “colonel” Olcott, qui fondirent un syncrétisme amalgament l’ésotérisme occidental, le bouddhisme tibétain, l’hindouisme et autres, en 1875. Le but était de fonder une religion qui englobe toutes les religions.

En 1893, cette société de théosophie organise à Chicago le premier parlement mondial des religions [excusez du peu]. Un nommé Swami Vivekananda (1863-1902), Indien hindouiste formé dans les écoles protestantes britanniques, y fait plusieurs discours qui favoriseront la connaissance et la diffusion de l’hindouisme en Occident. Il y reçoit l’ovation de 7000 personnes.

Brièvement, le yoga indien est une voie religieuse dont le but ultime est de parvenir à l’illumination par la méditation. L’Éveil est un état d’union avec le “dieu” intérieur (âtman) ou d’absoption de l’âtman dans l’Absolu (le Brahman). La voie du yoga passe par différentes étapes dont la dernière est l’état de Samadhi durant laquelle l’esprit du yogi réalise la “réalité ultime”.

En 1924, Tiramulai Khrishnamacharya choisi le hata yoga (yoga de l’effort) pour être adapté aux attentes des Occidentaux en s’inspirant de la gymnastique suédoise et du culturisme. C’est lui qui donne aux postures [asanas] les noms poétiques de “salutation au soleil”, “la cigogne”, [“l’arbre”, “le guerrier”], etc.

“Dès que le yoga s’exporte, il est marketé pour les Occidentaux. On le rend plus physique, on [en] gomme les aspects religieux tout en lui donnant une patine traditionnelle, on en fait une source de bienfaits, voire une alternative à la médecine.” (Marie Kock, spécialiste de l’histoire du yoga)

À ce stade, le yoga est une gymnastique exotique, mais qui porte en épithète un terme religieux, comme on détournait des termes comme chapelet, oraison [ou rosaire – ndr] pour en faire autre chose [un art martial, par exemple – ndr].

À partir des années 1960, des gourous indiens viennent en Occident avec un enseignement plus traditionnel du yoga dans leurs bagages. La dimension physique (asana) cède la place à la méditation (dhyana) pour parvenir à un état d’éveil. Le yoga vise désormais une transformation spirituelle.

Le yoga est inspiré du tantrisme qui est une voie ésotérique hindouiste et bouddhiste. Le yoga enseigne que les exercices de souffle [prânâyâma] permettent d’ouvrir les chakras et de faire l’expérience de l’éveil de la kundalini. L’illumination recherchée est perçue comme un état de plénitude, de bien-être, tant physique que psychologique. Il s’agit en fait d’un état de transe, d’ouverture sur le “monde invisible”.

Le prânâyâma se présente comme une méthode qui permet au prânâ (“souffle spirituel universel” [associé par d’aucuns au pneuma]) de pénétrer et de purifier le corps et l’esprit. L’hyperventilation provoque un état modifié de conscience pouvant aller jusqu’à induire un état de transe.

“Le yoga conduit à un état de fusion cosmique, induisant des états modifiés de conscience similaires à ceux que l’on peut obtenir par la transe ou par des rites initiatiques. Rien d’étonnant dès lors que ceux qui pratiquent un certain temps le yoga ou autres techniques analogues, se découvrent dotés de pouvoirs préternaturels. […] Un état modifié de conscience provoqué par des techniques longuement éprouvées par des yogis, peut provoquer des phénomènes d’emprises démoniaques.” (Josèphe Verlinde, L’Expérience interdite)

La méditation du yoga cherche à provoquer une enstase, une plongé en soi-même pour découvrir son moi profond que le père Thibaut nomme “dieu intérieur” [Michel Odoul écrit “maître intérieur” ; C. G. Jung parle de “soi” et, en parallèle avec le travail des alchimistes, une plongée dans l’inconscient pour sauver notre âme qui a besoin de rédemption].

La méditation chrétienne et la prière permettent une extase, une union (non une fusion), une communion d’amour avec un Dieu transcendant.

Selon le père Thibaut, le yoga est tourné vers soi, la prière est tournée vers une altérité et dans ce cas, le yoga empêche de s’ouvrir à une altérité, son accès nous devient impossible.

“Le souci de l’harmonie de l’homme avec son environnement est important, mais nous constatons qu’il devient progressivement un absolu, une aliénation qui nous empêche de porter tout notre effort sur le vrai enjeu de notre vie : l’accueil de la grâce divine au nom de Jésus-Christ. […]

Pour ceux qui pratiquent le yoga assidûment, il devient progressivement un ‘art théurgique’, à savoir une voie d’auto-divination [1]. L’incompatibilité avec le christianisme saute aux yeux : nous croyons certes que nous sommes appelés à participer à la vie divine (2 P 1, 4), mais par grâce, c’est-à-dire par l’action de l’Esprit-Saint, et non par nos propres efforts ou par immersion dans les énergies créées de ce monde.” (Josèphe Verlinde, L’Expérience interdite)

“ I had a bad night.” Well Wilson, we've all had to admit that a time or two, although your outing with those hot tub chicks wasn't exactly a presidential debate. On the other hand, your little game of “Who's On First?” didn't leave us in a national quandary – if that's the right word. Before this Shakespearian tragedy the Dems were whistling past the graveyard (no pun intended). But after Joe Biden crashed and burned in the debate with Donald Trump the epitaphs loomed large and left us ever closer to our first felon president. Those funny bumper stickers, “Let's Put A Felon In The White House,” aren't so humorous anymore. But give it time and the MAGA machine will rewrite history. Stormy who? Speaking of bad nights – poor Stormy. No Wilson, we should not review the porn star's courtroom testimony and her positive identification of... well, you know, his thing. But we digress. As it stands, the election is between an aged statesman and a felon with an enemies payback list – not to mention a radical instruction manual, “Project 2025,” brewed up by the sinister Heritage Foundation. Despite urging from many quarters and plummeting poll numbers Old Joe says he won't go. Shakespeare is known for dramatic endings and you know what Yogi Berra said – and it doesn't rhyme with “fat lady.”

SUPREME COURT TO THE RESCUE

Thank goodness the U.S. Supreme Court has made homelessness illegal. The high court's ruling comes just in time as the country is exploding with some 1 million people living on the streets. Now those scofflaws will have to buy houses or rent condos like everyone else. But wait, there's more. The Supremes ruled 6-3, along ideological lines, to strike down a law banning bump stocks that turn semi-automatic firearms into machine guns in order to kill more people at concerts and grocery stores. The Founders would just love it. Moving right along, the six conservative justices determined that it was OK for South Carolina to gerrymander voting districts to minimize black votes, overturning a lower court ruling. The hits just keep coming. Along idealogical lines, the court ruled that federal agencies have limited power to regulate industry impacts on environment, health care, consumer safety, government benefit programs and guns. Then there's the icing on the cake – Donald Trump is at least partly immune from prosecution for plotting Jan. the 6 insurrection and any crimes he committed from the Oval Office. And by a 6-3 vote the conservative court gave future presidents immunity from all official acts. God Bless America and Richard Nixon.

Post script – That's going to do it for another hazy, lazy summer week here at Smart Bomb where we keep track of DEI (diversity, equity and inclusion) so you don't have to. DEI is being rooted out of corporations, agencies and taxpayer-funded schools because it's a communist plot to make everyone equal. And we all know that some people are more equal than others. Utah lawmakers did their part by making DEI programs strictly verboten – particularly at universities where leftists push propaganda that diversity, equity and inclusion are somehow good things when they are so evil. Why should minorities, women, LGBT and other marginalized communities get stuff that white men don't get? And then there's this: Congressional Republicans blame DEI for an uptick of antisemitism at colleges and universities. “I think DEI is a fraud and what we’re seeing now on campuses is proof of that,” said Utah's Burgess Owens, chairman of the House higher education subcommittee. If it seems ironic that the GOP blames DEI for antisemitism then you've been paying too much attention. How else can we undercut affirmative action. You're right Wilson, there's always the Supreme Court and its ongoing efforts to get equal rights for white people.

Well shucks, old Joe Biden is having a time of it. His supporters were hoping for a miracle debate, but those things are in short supply these days. Yes Wilson, he does look like an all-star who stayed one season too long. Anyway, you and the guys in the band can relate, so take us out with something for Joe and folks who do not go gentle into that good night:

Dear Friends,yesterday my Husband and me celebrated Pride Yoga and Dance Party event.

This event was mark the second year of Pride Yoga at The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park during San Diego Pride Month. The hour-long sunset yoga class was taken place on the lawn started at 7pm led once again by FIT Athletic’s very own, Viktoria Talbot. Yogis of all levels were encouraged to attend as this was a general level class, with modifications instructed . Guests at this event were treated to a panorama of Coronado Island and a breathtaking golden hour sunset over the San Diego Bay.

After class, The Rady Shell was transformed into an epic Dance Party with returning musical guest DJ Sassy and new guest DJ Dova. We were excited a lot with this wonderful event and have had so much fun .
