I love that "accent" is winning when every time I see someone on tumblr dot com talking about the Jersey accent it's just them proving they have no idea what it actually is or sounds like
Jason Todd fandom squeeing over his "Jersey accent" but what they're imagining may as well be Christian Bale in Newsies
"But Carl Aquateenhungerforce!"
I'm sorry to have to tell you that he is a cartoon character and not a real person from New Jersey
"But Jersey Shore!"
It was called "Jersey Shore" because it was filmed at the Jersey shore. None of the actual cast members were from NJ, several of them were from Staten Island. Also no one hated Jersey Shore more than anyone who lived in Jersey at the time.
"But Frank Sinatra!"
Congratulations! You've identified a single person who had an accent similar to the one you're imagining. Unfortunately he developed that accent in the 1920's, living in a specific part of NJ that has always been overflow from NYC. It is now 2023 and there is an entire state outside of Hoboken, NJ.
You want to know what the rest of NJ actually sounds like? Go listen to Meryl Streep, Whitney Houston, Jon Bon Jovi, James Gandolfini (NOT Sopranos clips, go look up actual interviews where he's not putting on a character). Go watch some Youtube videos by Doctor Mike, like for real I found his channel a couple years ago and listening to him talk legitimately made me homesick for Jersey.
Reblog for a bigger sample size.

Your Bible is Corrupted: How Jesus is Misquoted! | Dr. Bart Ehrman
COMMENTARY:
Giggles, the thing is that number is festooned throughout the fabiric of the scripture, Since your Marxist protocols and procedures of Post Modern Historic Deconstruction discards figures of speach, you are personally under=equiped for literary criticism, which you demonstrate time after time, In the Beginning, was the Word, but before Wrod was, Number Is, Number is the mind of Genesis 1:1 There are at least tree levels of Numer in the scriptures,, Nuberics, textual number and what I can the Mundane numerology of versification. Nuberis is the meaning of each word of the Bible based on each word's numerological value, like Dal Martin's base 8 interpretation of "dove" being 801, Only, of course, in Hebrew. Mam of the conviction that the Hebrew alphabet originated in the Hebrew gematria, which existed before Moses had a jock strap. You can find interpretations of the fist verse of Genesis on YouTube, but an Oxford scholar interpreted the enitre Bible with Numerics in the 19 century, YOu really cannot do Kabala without Numerics. You have to speak and read HEbrews, you need to have memorized at least the Psalms and you need to be bale to render scripture into Nyberics. The Tree of Life contains 22 paths to becoming a person and Paul's Romans follows the Tree of Life as a mechanism of individuation, Textual numerlogy are the numbers that are explicitly in the narrative, such as "on the 7th day, God rested> or John 2:1 1On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. We biw rebder all number with the elegant Arabic symbols, or the "third" day would be rendered τρίτῃ and הַשְּׁבִיעִ֔י in Hebrew. How they did numerology and mathematics with thses mechaisms is a mystery to me. Mundane numerology is what I call versfication, or the numbers of thechapters and verses that were added to the scripture by a collaboration of the type setter Robert Estienne and the Holy Spirit in 1551, This is the playgorund of the Holy Spirit and offers access to the scriptures not avaiable to atheists and the protocols and processes of Dale Martin's critical historicl mehot of the Marxist constructs of Post Modern Historic Deconstruction,  For example, the 10 in Mark 1:10 is an allusion to Acts 10 and the 10 in Acts 20 is a reference to the 10th Legion that is the source of Quelle, Now, Dale Martin's clever interpretation of "dove" as 801 in Greek gematria reveals the base 8 nmuerology of the heritage of Egypt in pre-Jesus Greek and Jewish metaphysics. Base 8 numerology is an artifact of the Magi and Enoch, However "dove" in the Western numerology make possible by Arabic symbols and the Roman alphabet reders "dove: to 19, which is the Alpha and Omega of the trinity of Judaism, Christianity and Islam, Nineteem is revealed in Sura 74:30 as the Alpah Omega of the mind of God: Sura 74:30 abrogates the 200 odd abrogations of the Medinian verses of the Kroan wheh occured after Khadijah's death,  Khadijayh, mother/lover/wife of Mohammad, was Christians, as was her uncle, Khadijah was Mohammad's Witch of Endor and opened the channel between him and Gabrill  Khadijah is the midwife of Islam and the symbol 19 is the figure of Mary, Mother of Jesus, Redemptrix, and her Handmaids, Khadija, Ester and Mrry Magdalene, Mary, Mother of Jesus, it the Patron Saint of the 19th Amendment and reveals the heresy of the Pro-Life Calivins of Christian Nationalism and the blasphemy of the Dodds. decision, You are missing all that shit as an atheiest and a historian of your Chaple Hill Campus Crusde for Apostasy, This is the basis of my charge of your adacemic mal pracice.

It’s been literal years since I’ve done one of these XD thanks to @galaxywolves for tagging!
The last song I listened to: Level Up by Atlant!c! I’ve also been listening to Hostiles (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) by Max Richter, it’s very melancholic and is currently inspiring my writing ideas~
The last movie I watched: Hostiles, which is on Netflix! It’s a 2017 American revisionist Western film that stars Christian Bale, Rosamund Pike, Wes Studi, among other well-known actors! It follows a U.S. Army cavalry officer who must escort a Cheyenne war chief and his family back to their home in Montana in 1892. It’s got some dark moments but the ending was surprisingly uplifting, and I loved the score!
What I’m watching: I’m watching a playlist on YouTube called “The Key Saga” on Matthias’ channel! It’s so eerie and exciting considering it starts with a group of workers at Hi5 Studios discovering a mysterious set of keys in their ceiling, and it basically snowballs over the course of 2 years as they find weird artifacts, an abandoned car with strange items inside, and even a “stalker” breaking into their studios! It’s all real and unscripted (supposedly) which makes it even creepier, and it’s way more engaging than a Netflix mystery lol.
What I’m craving: Well, I’m not really “craving” anything, food-related or otherwise, but there are a lot of things I’d like XD To finish reading my stack of unread books, to buy new books, to write/brainstorm CdM things, to get my second dose of the COVID vaccine, to leave my house and hang out with friends, to visit the UK again!!!, to coach my volleyball players, to finally end this awful pandemic... These are all possible, whether they happen now or in the future, so that’s keeping me hopeful! <3
I’ve got no one else to tag, so hope you enjoyed this glimpse into my past few days!

There’s something I see a lot in relation to DC films and their critical opinions and it annoys me so I wanted to comment on it
I should preface this by saying that, while I understand the strong feelings people have on the subject, I am completely and unambiguously opposed to actions such as harassing people off social media, sending death threats or generally acting in a repulsive manner towards critics or fans in any given situation and that includes these films. Now that that’s out of the way, let’s begin...
The history of critics’ opinions (for the purposes of this post, I’ll be using this to refer to professionals, amateurs, bloggers, people with YT channels, etc) on the franchise are well documented so I don’t feel a need to go back over them here but, suffice it to say, it hasn’t been a positive one and fans such as myself have been vocal about calling out what we see as unfair or overly negative reviews, critical opinions and expectations for how the films are expected to improve in the eyes of detractors.
This has been seen as a misplaced move in the eyes of detractors who will say that we should be grateful for the presence of critical opinions in order to encourage the film makers to do better and that any and all blame should be put on the creators themselves.
It’s clear that people critical of these films have a lofty view of their behavior and goals, seeing themselves as compassionate critics who are only acting in the best interest of the films and who would love nothing more than to enjoy the franchise but are unable to and are bravely fighting the good fight for better cinema, however much it hurts them to act as they do.
It’s a nice story.
The problem is that it isn’t true.
Or, at least, it’s not as true as they keep insisting.
If you’ve spent any amount of time among people critical of these films, you have likely noticed that a lot of them are extremely abrasive about it. Personal insults towards the creators and fans, hyperbolic statements about the franchise’s future and the future of DC adaptations in general, unflattering comparisons to Marvel and a tendency to treat the films as something closer to a personal affront than they should are all common and certainly don’t play into the image of reluctant negativity they are so keen to cite when called out.
This isn’t even limited to online trolls or bloggers (more on them later). Respectable publications have joined in. There are articles written on the Guardian, a news site I genuinely respect and frequent, that wouldn’t be out of place on an independent site run by the stereotypical angry nerds we have been seeing too much of recently where Zack Snyder is characterized not as a filmmaker whose work they dislike but as an active detriment to DC who needs to be stopped and others where the films are treated with the usual nonsense.
The common response that people generally have when DCEU fans push back against criticism is to assume that we want a world where no one says anything negative about anything ever and the films are never called out when they make a mistake but that’s not it.
Criticism is necessary. It’s how people are given feedback to improve and I’m not going to say these films don’t have flaws to be called out or that Warner Bros haven’t made mistakes. But there’s a responsibility on the people delivering their criticism to do respectfully and fairly and without indulging in disproportionate harshness and unnecessary cruelty and to do so without being personal and realizing when you overstep as well as acknowledging progress and a lot of people criticizing these films haven’t been doing that over the years.
They still hold those earlier films over the newer ones more to their liking in a manner that suggests they have little, if any, intention of allowing the studio to move on or regarding any genuine improvement with little more than a dismissive, backhanded acknowledgement.
Even people who dislike the films have said they’re put off by just how vicious some of the negativity towards them and Zack Snyder personally has been.
Your criticism may be intended to encourage improvement but that doesn’t spare you from being called out on your execution or behavior in doing so, any more than a film makers’ sincere desire to make a good film means they can’t be criticized if they don’t live up to that goal in your eyes.
There’s also the issue of intent.
I have no doubt that people saying they’re critical because they want the films to improve are sincere about it. But it’s their definition of what would qualify as an improvement that needs to be question and scrutinized far more than it has been.
Many people’s definition of an improvement would involve completely annexing the films entirely and starting over from scratch. Others would be content with them merely getting rid of the ones they personally didn’t like or abandoning the idea entirely and just focusing on films and animation. Others would rather see Disney acquire the characters in the belief that any films they make would be worth the trade off (it wouldn’t be).
Others want the films to completely remove any trace of Zack Snyder’s vision, down to recasting actors still loyal to him as well as seeing the films adopt a tone virtually identical to that of the MCU. Others want to see Bruce Timm or Greg Berlanti put in charge while others are wondering why they didn’t bring Christian Bale or Michael Keaton back.
You can see the issue at hand. Every person saying this is doing so out of a sincere desire to see the films improve and that’s the problem. It’s their definition of what would qualify as an improvement that DCEU fans are so adamantly against.
You can’t just attribute good intentions to your actions and expect to be free from criticism from there on out.
That’s not even getting into how a lot of the criticism doesn’t serve a purpose other than to kick a franchise while it’s already down, to say nothing of how often it’s just blatantly inaccurate, and how many are the usual toxic fans who are just venting their anger at these films being made in a manner that differs from what they would have liked and whose manner of criticizing them is skewed more towards negativity.
I almost forgot about them. For every respectable critic out there, there are a dozen or so who take pleasure in going after these films and have no interest in seeing them improve. They just enjoy giving them shit and doing so in a very cruel and needlessly personal manner. Anyone can be a critic now and a lot of the ones doing so are, to put it bluntly, horrible people.
There’s also the fact that critics, fans and bloggers who have been doing this are being championed, being seen and seeing themselves as the victors in this conflict.
Their words and actions are certainly having an effect and not necessarily a positive one. Films have been drastically altered to better suit the expectations of such critics, directors have left due to the changes, arcs have been abandoned and some actors have left and others may follow due to how the franchise has changed.
Needless to say, fans have not been happy about this and are open about saying as much and have been vocal about blaming those with such intensely negative views for what they see as the loss of the franchise we could have had.
You can counter that they wouldn’t have faced that issue if they had done what was expected of them from the start but that’s besides the point.
If you’re a critic with an audience, wheter it’s writing or running a Youtube channel or whatever, you have power. People listen to you, even if it’s only a few dozen people, and that includes the creators. So it’s on you to use that power responsibly and that’s what a lot of people haven’t been doing in relation to these films so it falls to people like me and other fans to call them out when we see them as not living up to the lofty image and ideals they have outlined and assigned to themselves.
In short, fans are treating critics the same way critics have been treating these films and the fact that they are so against being held to such a standard only proves that they need it.
Those with negative views of the films have seen this and similar claims as fans putting the blame for the state of the franchise on someone other than the creators but really it’s the logical conclusion of the justification so quickly and frequently used of their behavior.
You can’t have it both ways. You can’t position yourself as someone whose actions are designed to incur change on a major level with these films and then distance yourself from the negative consequences that arise from your words or the actions you have been calling for, even if you didn’t intend it.
On a side note, one of the themes of BvS, the film that started all this, was how sincerely good intentions can have unintended negative consequences. Fate, it seems, is not without a sense of irony.
I wasn’t bullshitting when I said that criticism is necessary and I have no desire to see a world without film critics or where they are only seen as valid if they write what I agree with. I have read and encountered people who didn’t like these films but were still respectful, fair and even-minded about it as well as people who saw potential but felt it wasn’t being lived up to. It is possible to be critical of this franchise without engaging in the behavior I’ve mentioned so many times so I know it’s possible to achieve that which is why I’m annoyed at the behavior I outlined being so commonplace and being dismissed as an unavoidable side effect.
As with fandom, I want film criticism to improve and that will never happen if the people doing all of the stuff I mentioned are just invoking their good intentions as a way to beat away any kind of criticism of their behavior or refusing to ever reflect in a way that is absolutely necessary for improvement.

A Considerable Number of MCU Fans Want Nicolas Cage to Play an MCU Antagonist Character
Tumblr media
It is needless to say that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been built and popularized by its aura of powerful superheroes. It was started by Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man, then Chris Evans’ Captain America joined and raised the bar a little. Chris Hemsworth’s Thor raised the bar even further. This is not to mention that Edward Norton’s portrayal of Hulk (the character of course later went to Mark Ruffalo) has established an impregnable legacy.
Only later did the superheroes like Captain Marvel, Doctor Strange, and Guardians of the Galaxy joined in and made the franchise a hell of a deal at Hollywood.
Nevertheless, we do not need to remind ourselves that superheroes aren’t the only thing that has made MCU what it is today. The credit should also go to the villains (Thanos, of course) in making things look interesting and enthralling. Without them, the heroes would have no purpose, and the stories would become monotonous if not non-existent.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has produced a brilliant assemble of antagonist characters. From Loki (played by Tom Hiddleston) to Helmut Zemo (played by Daniel Bruhl), from Yellow Jacket (Corey Stoll) to universe boss Thanos (played by Josh Brolin), the MCU hasn’t been under par with its production of villains.
This is not to mention the iconic portrayal of Erik Killmonger (played by Michael B. Jordan). No matter whether the villains win or lose in the film, they always have a verified actor playing them, which makes it for a splendid theater experience.
Fans are always found to be theorizing on the internet on who should be the next actor to play the antagonist role in the latest adventure. While they know some of their theories would never come true, it hasn’t stopped them from making their thoughts clear on the casting. Of course, they do not have to care about the budget.
And looper.com has recently published a report, in which they have given some numbers from the recent poll, in which fans got to voice their opinions on who should be the next premium actor (after Christian Bale) to sign a deal with Marvel for the villainous character. And one of the actors they have chosen for the antagonist character is none other than Ghost Rider actor Nicolas Cage.
Looper recently ran a poll on their YouTube channel asking people to vote for the premium actor they wish to see in a Marvel film. Nicolas Cage was one of the names they had chosen as their favorites.
Though the number is average, some people do want to see Cage play a villainous character in the forthcoming MCU film. Leonardo DiCaprio (25%) was, of course, the winner among them all regardless of the fact that he is unlikely to ever be a part of a superhero film. Nicolas Cage was in the second position with little over 16% votes to his name. Liam Neeson was near to Cage at 16%. Other names included in the list were Melissa McCarthy, Russell Crowe, and Rowan Atkinson.
Meanwhile, Christian Bale has surprisingly joined the cast of Thor: Love and Thunder as the solitary villain.

November 20, 2020 at 01:32PM https://ift.tt/3fjmFU4 Movie Reviews, chaos walking trailer release date cast movie book unreleasable chaos walking, daisy ridley, doug liman, lionsgate, tom holland
Chaos Walking trailer has rolled in, suggesting that the film is definitely going to launch. Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman’s subsequent sci-fi journey, starring Daisy Ridley (Rey in Star Wars) and Tom Holland (Spider-Man within the MCU), has been in growth since 2011 and was caught in manufacturing since August 2017, however it’s now gotten a primary trailer. This is the closest we have come to seeing Chaos Walking on display screen. Based on the primary guide “The Knife of Never Letting Go” within the Chaos Walking trilogy, the trailer units up the movie’s premise: a world with none girls, earlier than Ridley actually crashes onto the planet.
Viola Eade (Ridley) by some means survives the wreckage after which runs into Todd Hewitt (Holland) who’s been inspecting the crash website. Their assembly reveals the sci-fi nature of Chaos Walking. Even although Hewitt would not truly say something, translucent shimmers round his head seemingly reveal his inside ideas, together with the truth that he has by no means seen a woman earlier than. Eade is bowled over and later complains how loud it’s. A voice-over from Mads Mikkelsen explains that it is referred to as “Noise” and that it occurred to all males on the planet, placing each thought of their head on show.
A pure query from Ridley’s character follows: “Where are all the women?” The mayor David Prentiss (Mikkelsen) replies that they’re useless. The Chaos Walking trailer then units up different characters, together with the Mayor’s son Davy (Nick Jonas) who tells Hewitt to look at his Noise, and their interplay reveals that Holland’s character has some form of mind-control powers. Later, Eade and Hewitt run away as a result of somebody needs to kidnap her. The Chaos Walking trailer additionally reveals how Noise may give you away in a struggle, with Hewitt’s audible ideas attracting the enemy.
Liman got here on board Chaos Walking in mid-2016, with Ridley (a fan of the books) and Holland being set as leads within the months following. Several extra solid additions have been made as Liman ready to movie Chaos Walking, and principal manufacturing ran from August to November 2017. But following poor check screenings the place it was deemed “unreleasable,” Lionsgate ordered $15-million reshoots, with Fede Álvarez (Don’t Breathe) concerned as director too. But as a consequence of Ridley and Holland’s respective commitments, reshoots may solely happen in April 2019.
Lionsgate would hope that Chaos Walking can recoup all that cash and make sufficient in order that it may well greenlight variations of the 2 different books.
Chaos Walking is at the moment slated to launch January 22, 2021, however the trailer merely says “coming soon.” That is smart given how COVID-19 has been taking part in wrecking ball with film launch dates.

Alexander Siddig Master Post: What to watch and where to watch it
WATCH: Good Candy
Peaky Blinders: most shows mash up all their cool shots with a soundtrack for their trailer. Peaky Blinders is that, only all the time. It’s beautiful, slick and oddly soulless: like a Vanity Fair photoshoot come to life. Siddig’s only in the romantic subplot of Series Three (£9.49 Amazon), but wait to buy as it’s on Netflix from September.
Cairo Time: Set in Egypt. Nice little love story. Surprisingly British in a repressed ‘I’d better go/ yes you better go’ sense. Except they all drink coffee rather than tea and smoke hookah. On YouTube. Worth cost of DVD.
Hannibal: Elephants crossing the Alps on a BBC Drama budget: what’s not to like? Actually done very well and in a sort of documentary style. Added bonus that Scipio is Rose Tyler’s Dad. On YouTube.   ☩
Spooks: Nest of Angels episode: Traumatic. Remember seeing it as a kid in 2003 before UK suicide bombers were a thing. It’s harder to watch now. But definitely do as it’s a bold early attempt to tackle a lot of issues. It was and still is a brave piece of drama. On YouTube.   ☩
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: 7 Series, all available on Netflix: hour after hour of episodes. Say goodbye to at least two months of your life. Noticeable increase in quality and complexity Series 4, 5, 6.
Lawrence After Arabia: interesting, well written and with a young Ralph Fiennes. Pace and style is more like a play than a film. Can rent for £4.00 on Amazon.
WATCH DEPENDING ON YOUR TASTE:  aka. The Marmite flavoured Liquorice
Doctor Who - 1001 Nights (audio play): Really neat idea at the core. Doesn’t really get to Siddig’s story until episode four, but listening to the other parts really adds to the build-up. Yes, it’s £12.99, but it’s made by Big Finish (all round reliable candy makers) who employ a lot of old UK actors & writers, so resist urge to torrent.
Waking the Dead:  Endgame part 1 and part 2. Don’t be fooled by the CSI set up - this is a level up in violent and gruesome. You can watch it on the BBC YouTube channel for £1.99.  ☩
The Phantom of the Opera (audio play): faithful to the novel. Adapted by a Dalek. Good Commuting Material. Tad expensive at £12.99. Slightly cheaper if you use monthly credit on Audible.
Syriana – complex little film, full of a great cast. Intriguing, realistic and with worrying similar themes to Lawrence After Arabia but set a century later. Tad heavy going. Available free on Amazon prime.  ☩
The Flat Earth (audio play): Weirdly like Lost. Don’t listen to it on a flight. I think the writer may have been going for a sense of the transcendent in a way that was meant to be life affirming. But it actually conjures up some pretty horrific mental images…so, yeah… part 1, part 2  ☩
OKAY IF YOU’RE BORED: aka. Chewing Gum
Inescapable: the landscape is shot nicely but the story is dull. £5.10 to download on Amazon, but you can rent for 99p on iTunes which is fine because it’s not a film for repeat viewing.
True Love: only improvised drama series broadcast ever on BBC One. Turns out there is a reason for that: actors need writers.  Siddig is in episode four, which is the least mundane of the bunch. Bonus of Jane Horrocks.
Doomsday: post-apocalyptic movie. Oddly similar ‘flee to Scotland’ vibe as Reign of Fire below.  Not done well. 99p on Google Play, but seriously just go watch the infinitely better 28 Days Later instead.  ☩
Doctor Who – Sisters of the Flame/ The Vengeance of Morbius (Audio play): Worth it to hear Siddig play a centipede. ‘Cause its radio you just hear the hundreds of feet pattering every time he enters. £8.99 so try and buy when Big Finish have a deal on. Part one is both better and has more Siddig than part two. ☩
Un Homme Perdu:  version in Arabic & French but I can’t find a copy with English subtitles. That said, there’s not a lot of dialogue: if your French is moderate like mine you can muddle through. Intention kind of reminded me of the British 60s film Blow-Up. Kind of dull in an ‘art-film’ way even without language barrier.
24 - Season 6: By this point of watching the back catalogue, I’ve got to admit I was getting pretty fed up of variations on Islamic Extremism stories. Siddig’s in episodes 2 – 7 and 9. £7.99 for whole series on Amazon, but low res version available on Dailymotion.  ☩
Reign of Fire: so the poster looks AWESOME (dragons destroying London, hell yes!). But that all happens off screen. Lacking dragon destruction, Siddig, female characters or emotional stakes. Contains FAR too much Matthew McConaughey. Rent for £2.48 to watch Christian Bale valiantly attempt to make the best of a bad job.
BARELY IN: aka Empty calories
Game of Thrones: you’ve probably seen the whole series already. If you want to watch just the episodes with Doran in, these are limited to Series 5: episodes 2, 6, 9, 10 and Series 6, episode 1. The entire globe has downloaded it illegally already, but ignoring that, you can buy it on Google Play for £1.99 per episode. ☩
Turmanbay (audio series): available free on BBC iplayer. Game of Thrones but on the radio. Bit repetitive.
Atlantis: in various episodes across Season 1. Scrappily put together and feels like a kids programme. It’s £12.49 to download on Amazon but I wouldn’t bother.
Primeval: Theoretically in all of Series 4 and 5 – but in reality very little actual scenes until last two episodes of Series 5 (and even then, the amount of acting is debatable). Crappy production values and scripts lacking depth. If you really want to watch it, its £6.99 to stream on Amazon. ☩
Strike Back: Episodes 5 and 6: SAS video game masquerading as a TV show, or one of those books where the cover has a desert and a bullseye on it and the name of the author is in bigger print that the title. Generic variation on Islamic Extremism story…again… ☩
Doctor Who – The Wreck of the Titan: It’s not bad, just a sort of average Sixth Doctor story and for £12.99 you can live without it.
Merlin: meh, not worth it. Series 1, Episode 10: On Netflix. Better than Atlantis and Primeval though. ☩
The Nativity Story – feels like something they make you watch in school. Pretty, but totally lacking humanity or emotion. Part with Alexander Siddig as the Angel Gabriel is here.
DON’T WATCH: Just plain bad
Clash of the Titans: APPALLING MOVIE. WARNING, WARNING. DO NOT WATCH. Can rent for £3.00 on Amazon, but again DO NOT WATCH.  Should also be under ‘barely in’.
The Diary of River Song: “I went to a marvelous party” episode (audio play): Story is boring and heavy handed on the allegory. Add to that the fact it costs £30.00(eek!) makes it a ‘skip it’.
OTHER/ STUFF I CAN’T FIND
Recon: Seriously does this movie even exist? I can’t find it anywhere. Possibly just an elaborate front set up as a tax dodge…
The Big Battalions: missing, presumed wipe. I work near the BFI so went in to see if they have a copy. They didn’t even have a record it exists. Still, it was made by Carnival Productions (who thirty years later churn out Hollow Crown & Downtown Abbey) so was probably good with high production values.
Wild Arabia - documentary narration kindly recommended by little-Vulcan for its ‘dope landscape shots’. On Netflix

Homeless Women in America
By: Bergen Flom and Amelia Bell
In 2017 the City of Los Angeles had a homeless count of 31,285. Two out of three people who are currently homeless are male. The high rate of homelessness among men should show us how our ideas of gender are broken. Gender roles are rooted out of certain behavioral expectation that are based on one’s gender. For example, in our society men who are living on the streets are not living up to the hegemonic ideas of masculinity. Our society tells men to suck it up, be strong, and be a man. We tell women they are pretty, vulnerable, and inherently in need of help. This results in varying survival strategies when it comes to homelessness. Men are less likely to be offered help than women (as reflected in the data) because men are perceived to be more self-sufficient. Both masculinity and femininity can be used on the streets as both a privilege and a weapon depending on the situation and circumstances. For women, they are able to mobilize the resources that come with femininity.
However, once a woman is viewed as less feminine, it's harder for them to have access to resources to getting off the streets. An example of this is when a woman ages.  A 2016 survey conducted to find out homeless women’s needs in DTLA found that more than half of all survey respondents (60.2%) were age 51 and over, a nearly 8% increase from 2013 (52.4%), and a 13% increase from 2010 (47%).
Police give a lot of attention to “saving” women. Forrest Stuart touches on this in chapter 2 of Down Out and Under Arrest when he talks about the police’s efforts to “protect vulnerable future clients.” The police explained the importance of focusing on women because they are easy targets for crime and victimization on the streets. A cop explained how the longer the women are in Skid Row, the more they get abused and lose trust in people because everyone takes advantage of them. Amelia Bell and Bergen Flom have coined the term “damsel in distress syndrome”. This syndrome is based in gender expectations surrounding a woman’s need to be “saved”. This makes it easier for women in places like Skid Row to have access to resources because they are naturally viewed as more vulnerable and in need of assistance. The men are more likely to be left to “man up” and fend for themselves.
Andy Bales is the CEO of Union Rescue Mission. Union Rescue Mission was founded in 1891 and this Christian organization works to get women and children off the streets of Skid Row. Andy discusses how, “There are over 300 registered sex offenders in just a few block area surrounding Union Rescue Mission.” Due to the alarming rate of sexual offenders in such a contained area, their primary focus is in housing women and children and not men. While it may seem that this organization is supporting the “damsel in distress syndrome in reality it’s not, as women and families are fastest growing homeless population.
Homeless women often require different needs and expenses than homeless men. For example, they may need affordable childcare, gynecological and prenatal care, and health and mental services for those who are victims of domestic violence. People often forget that homeless women still get their periods and would feel more comfortable and dignified in a bra. An organization called “I Support the Girls” is dedicated to restoring dignity in homeless women by donating bras and tampons so they don’t have to compromise between a meal and a box of tampons.  This video made by Bustle’s YouTube channel shows the lengths homeless women are forced to go to to keep up their hygiene when they get their period.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABch4VYOJZ0
Things such as wage discrepancies and job discrimination sometimes affect women’s ability to find work. This disproportionately affects women of color, specifically black women, who are also disproportionately affected by homelessness. This is no coincidence. The intersectional situation that black women face is unique and especially detrimental to their success at getting out of homelessness. The Downtown Women’s Assessment surveyed women in downtown LA and found that African-American women surveyed were far more likely to experience chronic homelessness and to face violence.
Women are also often seen as solely responsible for children. Taking care of children is wildly expensive and dealing with the emotional stress of losing your child to child protective services is traumatizing. Domestic violence is one of the main drivers into homelessness for women. More than half (55%) of the Downtown Women’s Assessment survey respondents had experienced domestic abuse. Due to a lack of safe, affordable housing options, these women are often forced to choose between remaining with their abuser or becoming homeless. About 6% of the homeless population in the greater Los Angeles area is fleeing domestic violence.
Places like Downtown Women’s Center (DWC) in Los Angeles fight to provide dignity and resources to homeless women. DWC is the only center in Los Angeles that focuses solely on women’s needs and all women, including trans women, who come through the doors receive 3 meals a day, clean bathrooms & showers, a change of clothes, an address to receive mail, a safe place to socialize, and personal case management services to help connect women to housing. The center is not a shelter but does offer 119 permanent housing units in Skid Row.
While there are lower rates of homeless women than men, it doesn’t imply that their experiences are any easier. They’re just different and tough to compare to a man’s experience. Not all women have access to these resources simply because they are women. Forrest discusses how in South Chicago women are used by gangs to “enhance their performances of innocence” (260). Male gang members would throw their arms around a woman’s shoulder whenever cops drive by, to make the impression that they’re romantically involved. In this sense, women become “props” and are used as objects to keep the police at bay.  Forrest also mentions how street vendors in Skid Row do not want women around because of their heightened police attention usually surrounding around the assumption that women are prostituting.  Prostitution is an easy way for police to criminalize women to get then off the streets and consequently out of danger.  However, men are more likely to experience chronic homelessness than women. It is important to recognize that because some resources cater to only women and children, homeless men can be at a disadvantage because they are seen as a failure to hegemonic masculinity-- therefore solely responsible for their homelessness.
