Chandrashila is the summit of the Tungnath peak. It literally means ‘Moon Rock’. It is located at a height of about 4,000 meters (13,000 feet) above sea level. This peak provides a spectacular view of Himalayas, especially Nandadevi, Trisul, Kedar Peak, Bandar punch and Chaukhamba peaks. The trek to Chandrashila is very popular amongst tourists. The trek to the peak is 5 kms long. The trek route that starts from Chopta takes one to Tungnath (the highest Shiva temple in the world); from here, it is a kilometer long, and a steep trek. Though shorter in distance, steep climbing makes this trek rigorous. 🙏🏻🧘🏻♂️

While Chopta attracts tourists throughout the year, winter adds a magical touch, making it a perfect destination for trekking enthusiasts and nature lovers.
A Chopta itinerary trek in winter is ideal for those who seek adventure, tranquility, and a connection with nature. With snow-capped mountains, beautiful meadows, and clear views of some of the most prominent Himalayan peaks, it is no surprise that Chopta has gained popularity as a trekking destination.
The trek to Tungnath Temple and Chandrashila Peak is a key highlight for trekkers, offering not only spiritual significance but also breathtaking panoramic views.
In this comprehensive guide, we will cover everything you need to know about planning your Chopta winter trek, including a detailed itinerary, packing tips, and essential insights into the beauty and challenges that winter trekking in Chopta brings.
Why Choose Chopta for a Winter Trek?
Winter trekking in Chopta is a unique experience. Whether you are a seasoned trekker or a beginner, this destination offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, adventure, and peace. Here are some reasons why Chopta should be on your winter travel list:
Snow-Laden Trails: Trekking through the snow-covered trails is an extraordinary experience. As the winter unfolds, Chopta is blanketed in a thick layer of snow, turning the trek into a fairy-tale-like journey through pine and deodar forests.
Breathtaking Himalayan Views: One of the biggest draws of a winter trek in Chopta is the panoramic view of the towering Himalayan peaks. From Nanda Devi to Trishul and Chaukhamba, the mighty mountains stand as a beautiful backdrop throughout your trek.
Serenity and Solitude: Unlike the more popular trekking routes in Uttarakhand, Chopta remains relatively untouched by mass tourism in winter. This means that you can experience the serenity and peace of nature without the distractions of large crowds.
Spiritual Significance: Chopta is home to the revered Tungnath Temple, the highest Shiva temple in the world. The temple is often covered in snow during the winter months, adding a unique and sacred ambiance to the trek.
Suitable for All Levels: While the trek is moderate in difficulty, it is accessible to both beginner and experienced trekkers. The winter snow adds a sense of adventure, but with the right preparation, the trek can be safely enjoyed by anyone with reasonable fitness levels.
Chopta Itinerary for Winter Trekking
Day 1: Arrival in Chopta and Acclimatization
Journey to Chopta: Your trek begins with a scenic drive from Rishikesh or Haridwar, taking you through picturesque landscapes, mountain roads, and quaint villages. Chopta is about 7-8 hours away by road, and you will pass through destinations like Devprayag and Rudraprayag, where rivers meet in stunning confluence.
Base Camp: Upon reaching Chopta, check into your guesthouse or camp. The first day is dedicated to acclimatization, as you prepare for the trek ahead. The altitude and cold weather can take time to adjust to, so this is your chance to relax and soak in the winter beauty of the Chopta valley.
Bonfire and Stargazing: Chopta is known for its clear skies, making it a perfect spot for stargazing at night. If your itinerary includes a bonfire, it’s the perfect way to end the day in warmth, surrounded by the snowy landscape.
Day 2: Trek to Tungnath Temple
Distance: 3.5 km (one way)
Trek Time: 4-5 hours
The second day begins with an early morning trek to Tungnath Temple. At an altitude of 3,680 meters, this is the highest Shiva temple in the world and a key highlight of the Chopta Tungnath trip. The trek to Tungnath is moderately challenging, especially in winter when the trail is covered in snow.
Trail Details: As you ascend, you’ll walk through enchanting snow-covered meadows and forests, with glimpses of the Himalayas accompanying you along the way. The serene, white landscape, combined with the peaceful ambiance of the trail, makes this trek one to remember.
Tungnath Temple: Upon reaching the temple, you’ll be struck by its ancient architecture and the spiritual energy that surrounds the place. Although the temple is often closed during winter due to heavy snowfall, the view and ambiance are worth the trek.
Day 3: Trek to Chandrashila Peak
Distance: 1.5 km (from Tungnath Temple)
Trek Time: 2 hours
The next destination on your Chopta itinerary trek in winter is Chandrashila Peak, located 1.5 km above Tungnath Temple at an altitude of 4,000 meters. The trek is short but steep, and it’s considered the most challenging part of the journey, especially with snow underfoot.
Summit Views: The effort is rewarded with a 360-degree panoramic view of some of the highest peaks in the Indian Himalayas, including Nanda Devi, Kedarnath, Chaukhamba, and Trishul. On clear winter mornings, the sunrise over the peaks is nothing short of spectacular, as the first rays of sunlight bathe the snowy mountains in a golden hue.
After taking in the views, descend back to Chopta for an overnight stay.
Day 4: Deoria Tal Trek and Departure
Distance: 2.5 km (one way)
Trek Time: 2-3 hours
After breakfast, you’ll set off for the final trek to Deoria Tal, a beautiful high-altitude lake located about 22 km from Chopta. The trek is relatively easy and passes through dense forests and small meadows.
Scenic Beauty: Deoria Tal is famous for its clear waters, which reflect the surrounding snow-clad peaks like a mirror. In winter, the lake often freezes, adding a surreal quality to the scenery. Spend some time enjoying the peace and beauty of the area before heading back to your base camp.
Departure: After your trek, return to Chopta and begin your journey back to Haridwar or Rishikesh, marking the end of your Chopta winter trek package.
Best Time for the Chopta Winter Trek
The best time to undertake a Chopta itinerary trek in winter is between December and February. This is when the region is covered in a blanket of snow, transforming the landscape into a winter wonderland. Each month offers a slightly different experience:
December: Early winter with light snow, perfect for those who want to experience a mix of snow and clear weather.
January: Mid-winter with heavy snowfall, making it ideal for those seeking the true adventure of snow trekking.
February: Late winter with moderate snow and relatively milder temperatures, best for trekkers who prefer winter trekking without extreme cold.
Packing Essentials for a Winter Trek in Chopta
Winter trekking requires special gear to ensure you stay warm and comfortable throughout the journey. Here’s a list of essentials you’ll need for your Chopta Tungnath trip:
Clothing: Dress in layers for optimal warmth. Thermal inners, a fleece jacket, and a windproof and waterproof outer layer are a must. Insulated jackets and woolen sweaters will help combat the cold during the trek.
Footwear: Waterproof trekking boots with good grip are crucial, especially for walking on snow. Woolen socks and gaiters to keep your legs warm and dry are recommended.
Trekking Gear: Carry trekking poles, crampons, and a backpack with a rain cover. Trekking poles provide stability on snowy trails, while crampons help with grip on icy sections.
Accessories: Don’t forget gloves, a woolen hat, a scarf, and sunglasses (to protect your eyes from snow glare). A headlamp or torch is useful for early morning or late evening treks.
Snacks and Water: Carry energy-rich snacks like dry fruits, protein bars, and chocolate to keep your energy levels up. Hydration is key, so carry a water bottle and refill it whenever possible.
Costs of a Chopta Winter Trek Package
A typical Chopta package for winter trekking costs around INR 6,000 to INR 10,000 per person for a 3-4 day trek. The cost usually includes:
Accommodation: Camps or guesthouses in Chopta, often with heating options for winter.
Meals: Full-board meals, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Trekking Guide: A local guide to lead you on the trails, ensuring safety in the snow-covered landscape.
Trekking Gear: Some packages include gear like snow boots, crampons, and poles. If not included in your package.
Conclusion:

Getting Started: The Road to Chopta
The adventure kicks off with your journey to Chopta, a small, quiet hamlet that serves as the base for this trek. Expect to be surrounded by the natural beauty of the Himalayas long before you even lace up your boots.

Travel Tip: It’s best to start your journey early in the morning, so you can reach Chopta by afternoon and enjoy some time acclimatizing to the high-altitude environment.
Once you arrive in Chopta, you’ll be greeted by the rolling meadows and panoramic views of Himalayan peaks like Chaukhamba and Trishul. Chopta is often dubbed the “Mini Switzerland of India,” and it’s not hard to see why. The landscape, rich in flora and fauna, offers the perfect introduction to the scenic wonders awaiting you.
The Ascent to Tungnath: Trekking to the World’s Highest Shiva Temple
The real trek begins as you leave Chopta behind and head toward Tungnath, the highest Shiva temple in the world, standing at an impressive 3,680 meters. Though the trek is only 3.5 km, the steep incline will test your endurance. The paved trail is well-maintained, making it accessible to both novice and experienced trekkers, but the ascent can still be a challenge.
As you trek, you’ll walk through lush rhododendron and oak forests, occasionally catching glimpses of the towering peaks in the distance. In spring, the rhododendron trees bloom in vivid red and pink, turning the landscape into a colorful canvas.
Tungnath Temple: When you finally reach Tungnath, the air is crisp and cool, and the sense of calm is almost palpable. This ancient temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is one of the Panch Kedars and has a spiritual energy that draws pilgrims and trekkers alike. The temple is usually open from April to November, so plan your visit accordingly.
Chandrashila Summit: A Panoramic View of the Himalayas
From Tungnath, the path to Chandrashila Peak is a further 1.5 km and involves a steep ascent. Though short, this part of the trek can be demanding due to the high altitude and gradient. However, the effort is more than worth it when you reach the summit. Chandrashila, which literally means "Moon Rock," stands at a towering 4,000 meters and offers a 360-degree panoramic view of some of the most famous Himalayan peaks, including Nanda Devi, Kedarnath, and Trishul.
Many trekkers aim to reach the summit early in the morning to catch the sunrise, which bathes the snow-capped mountains in shades of gold and pink. It’s a truly magical moment that makes the climb unforgettable.
Pro Tip: Dress in layers, even if you’re trekking in summer. The temperature can drop significantly at higher altitudes, and the wind at Chandrashila can be biting.
Descend and Unwind in Chopta
After soaking in the views at Chandrashila, you’ll make your way back to Chopta. The descent is much easier on the knees, and you’ll have time to admire the landscapes you may have rushed past earlier. Once you return to Chopta, the evening can be spent relaxing by a campfire, exchanging stories with fellow trekkers, or simply stargazing in the clear Himalayan night sky.
Local Cuisine: Don’t miss the chance to try some traditional Garhwali food while you’re in Chopta. Aloo Ke Gutke (spiced potatoes) and Mandua Roti (finger millet bread) are popular regional dishes that will help replenish your energy after a long day’s trek.
Deoriatal: A Tranquil Lake in the Heart of the Forest
While many trekkers stop at Tungnath and Chandrashila, a visit to Deoriatal is a highly recommended extension of the journey. Located near the village of Sari, about 20 km from Chopta, Deoriatal is a crystal-clear alpine lake surrounded by dense forests. The trek to Deoriatal is relatively easy, covering a distance of about 2.5 km from Sari village.
What makes Deoriatal so special is the reflection of the Chaukhamba peaks in the lake’s still waters. The tranquil setting feels like a scene straight out of a painting. It’s a great spot to relax, soak in the natural beauty, and take some stunning photographs.
If you’re looking for a more immersive experience, you can camp near the lake. Many trekkers choose to spend the night at Deoriatal, waking up to the sound of birds chirping and the sight of mist rolling over the lake’s surface.
Birdwatching: Deoriatal is a paradise for bird lovers. The surrounding forest is home to a wide variety of birds, including the Himalayan Monal, which is the state bird of Uttarakhand, and several species of eagles, woodpeckers, and flycatchers.
What to Pack for the Chopta-Tungnath-Chandrashila and Deoriatal Trek
Packing smart is essential for this trek. Here’s a checklist of essentials to ensure you’re well-prepared:
Warm Clothing: Even during the summer months, it can get cold, especially at Tungnath and Chandrashila. Bring a good quality jacket, thermals, gloves, and a hat.
Sturdy Trekking Shoes: The trails can be rocky and steep, so make sure your shoes have good grip and ankle support.
Trekking Poles: These can be extremely helpful, particularly for the steep ascent to Chandrashila.
Sunscreen and Sunglasses: The high altitude means you’ll be exposed to stronger UV rays. Protect your skin and eyes.
Water and Snacks: There are a few tea stalls along the way, but it’s best to carry your own water and energy bars or dry fruits.
Headlamp or Torch: If you’re planning to start your trek early or stay overnight at Deoriatal, a headlamp will be useful.
Responsible Trekking
While trekking in the Himalayas is a beautiful experience, it’s important to trek responsibly to protect the fragile ecosystem. Always carry your waste back with you and avoid littering. Respect the local culture and traditions, especially when visiting religious sites like Tungnath Temple.
The Essence of the Trek
The Chopta-Tungnath-Chandrashila and Deoriatal trek offers much more than just a physical challenge. It’s a journey into nature’s pristine beauty, a chance to disconnect from the chaos of city life and reconnect with yourself. Whether it’s the spiritual vibes of Tungnath, the sweeping vistas from Chandrashila, or the peaceful ambiance of Deoriatal, every step on this trek is a step into tranquility and wonder.
This trek has something for everyone—whether you're a seasoned trekker looking for breathtaking views or a spiritual seeker in search of peace. It’s not just about reaching the destination; it’s about experiencing the beauty of the journey itself.
