Trekking the Enchanting Chopta-Tungnath-Chandrashila and Deoriatal Trail
Tumblr media
The Chopta-Tungnath-Chandrashila trek, along with a visit to the pristine Deoriatal Lake, offers an unforgettable experience for nature lovers and adventurers. Set amidst the breathtaking Garhwal Himalayas, this trek seamlessly combines serene landscapes, challenging climbs, and spiritual energy. If you’re looking for a Himalayan trek that has it all—lush meadows, snow-clad peaks, ancient temples, and glistening alpine lakes—this is the journey you’ve been waiting for.
Getting Started: The Road to Chopta
Tumblr media
The adventure kicks off with your journey to Chopta, a small, quiet hamlet that serves as the base for this trek. Whether you’re coming from Delhi, Rishikesh, or Haridwar, the road to Chopta winds through scenic valleys, rivers, and forests. Expect to be surrounded by the natural beauty of the Himalayas long before you even lace up your boots.
Choptatourpackage
Travel Tip: It’s best to start your journey early in the morning, so you can reach Chopta by afternoon and enjoy some time acclimatizing to the high-altitude environment.
Once you arrive in Chopta, you’ll be greeted by the rolling meadows and panoramic views of Himalayan peaks like Chaukhamba and Trishul. Chopta is often dubbed the “Mini Switzerland of India,” and it’s not hard to see why. The landscape, rich in flora and fauna, offers the perfect introduction to the scenic wonders awaiting you.
The Ascent to Tungnath: Trekking to the World’s Highest Shiva Temple
Tumblr media
The real trek begins as you leave Chopta behind and head toward Tungnath, the highest Shiva temple in the world, standing at an impressive 3,680 meters. Though the trek is only 3.5 km, the steep incline will test your endurance. The paved trail is well-maintained, making it accessible to both novice and experienced trekkers, but the ascent can still be a challenge.
As you trek, you’ll walk through lush rhododendron and oak forests, occasionally catching glimpses of the towering peaks in the distance. In spring, the rhododendron trees bloom in vivid red and pink, turning the landscape into a colorful canvas.
Tungnath Temple: When you finally reach Tungnath, the air is crisp and cool, and the sense of calm is almost palpable. This ancient temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is one of the Panch Kedars and has a spiritual energy that draws pilgrims and trekkers alike. The temple is usually open from April to November, so plan your visit accordingly.
Chandrashila Summit: A Panoramic View of the Himalayas
Tumblr media
From Tungnath, the path to Chandrashila Peak is a further 1.5 km and involves a steep ascent. Though short, this part of the trek can be demanding due to the high altitude and gradient. However, the effort is more than worth it when you reach the summit. Chandrashila, which literally means "Moon Rock," stands at a towering 4,000 meters and offers a 360-degree panoramic view of some of the most famous Himalayan peaks, including Nanda Devi, Kedarnath, and Trishul.
Many trekkers aim to reach the summit early in the morning to catch the sunrise, which bathes the snow-capped mountains in shades of gold and pink. It’s a truly magical moment that makes the climb unforgettable.
Pro Tip: Dress in layers, even if you’re trekking in summer. The temperature can drop significantly at higher altitudes, and the wind at Chandrashila can be biting.
Descend and Unwind in Chopta
Tumblr media
After soaking in the views at Chandrashila, you’ll make your way back to Chopta. The descent is much easier on the knees, and you’ll have time to admire the landscapes you may have rushed past earlier. Once you return to Chopta, the evening can be spent relaxing by a campfire, exchanging stories with fellow trekkers, or simply stargazing in the clear Himalayan night sky.
Local Cuisine: Don’t miss the chance to try some traditional Garhwali food while you’re in Chopta. Aloo Ke Gutke (spiced potatoes) and Mandua Roti (finger millet bread) are popular regional dishes that will help replenish your energy after a long day’s trek.
Deoriatal: A Tranquil Lake in the Heart of the Forest
Tumblr media
While many trekkers stop at Tungnath and Chandrashila, a visit to Deoriatal is a highly recommended extension of the journey. Located near the village of Sari, about 20 km from Chopta, Deoriatal is a crystal-clear alpine lake surrounded by dense forests. The trek to Deoriatal is relatively easy, covering a distance of about 2.5 km from Sari village.
What makes Deoriatal so special is the reflection of the Chaukhamba peaks in the lake’s still waters. The tranquil setting feels like a scene straight out of a painting. It’s a great spot to relax, soak in the natural beauty, and take some stunning photographs.
If you’re looking for a more immersive experience, you can camp near the lake. Many trekkers choose to spend the night at Deoriatal, waking up to the sound of birds chirping and the sight of mist rolling over the lake’s surface.
Birdwatching: Deoriatal is a paradise for bird lovers. The surrounding forest is home to a wide variety of birds, including the Himalayan Monal, which is the state bird of Uttarakhand, and several species of eagles, woodpeckers, and flycatchers.
What to Pack for the Chopta-Tungnath-Chandrashila and Deoriatal Trek
Tumblr media
Packing smart is essential for this trek. Here’s a checklist of essentials to ensure you’re well-prepared:
Warm Clothing: Even during the summer months, it can get cold, especially at Tungnath and Chandrashila. Bring a good quality jacket, thermals, gloves, and a hat.
Sturdy Trekking Shoes: The trails can be rocky and steep, so make sure your shoes have good grip and ankle support.
Trekking Poles: These can be extremely helpful, particularly for the steep ascent to Chandrashila.
Sunscreen and Sunglasses: The high altitude means you’ll be exposed to stronger UV rays. Protect your skin and eyes.
Water and Snacks: There are a few tea stalls along the way, but it’s best to carry your own water and energy bars or dry fruits.
Headlamp or Torch: If you’re planning to start your trek early or stay overnight at Deoriatal, a headlamp will be useful.
Responsible Trekking
While trekking in the Himalayas is a beautiful experience, it’s important to trek responsibly to protect the fragile ecosystem. Always carry your waste back with you and avoid littering. Respect the local culture and traditions, especially when visiting religious sites like Tungnath Temple.
The Essence of the Trek
Tumblr media
The Chopta-Tungnath-Chandrashila and Deoriatal trek offers much more than just a physical challenge. It’s a journey into nature’s pristine beauty, a chance to disconnect from the chaos of city life and reconnect with yourself. Whether it’s the spiritual vibes of Tungnath, the sweeping vistas from Chandrashila, or the peaceful ambiance of Deoriatal, every step on this trek is a step into tranquility and wonder.
This trek has something for everyone—whether you're a seasoned trekker looking for breathtaking views or a spiritual seeker in search of peace. It’s not just about reaching the destination; it’s about experiencing the beauty of the journey itself.

 Detailed overview of Tungnath
Tungnath is a sacred Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand, India. It holds the distinction of being the highest Shiva temple in the world, situated at an altitude of approximately 3,680 meters (12,073 feet) above sea level. The temple is an integral part of the Panch Kedar pilgrimage circuit, which comprises five temples dedicated to Lord Shiva in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand.
Here's a detailed overview of Tungnath:
1 History: The exact origins of Tungnath Temple are not precisely documented, but it is believed to have been constructed thousands of years ago. Legend has it that the temple was built by the Pandavas, the protagonists of the Hindu epic Mahabharata, during their exile. Another legend suggests that it was constructed by Adi Shankaracharya, the 8th-century Hindu philosopher and theologian who revitalized Hinduism. 2 Architecture: The architecture of Tungnath Temple reflects traditional North Indian temple architecture. It is made of stone and has a simple yet elegant design. The sanctum sanctorum (garbhagriha) houses the main deity, Lord Shiva, in the form of a lingam. Surrounding the main temple, there are smaller shrines dedicated to other deities such as Parvati, Vyas, and Kal Bhairav. 3 Location and Accessibility: Tungnath Temple is situated in the picturesque setting of the Himalayas, amidst lush greenery and snow-capped peaks. The temple can be reached via a trekking route that starts from Chopta, a small town in Uttarakhand. The trek to Tungnath is moderately challenging, covering a distance of around 3.5 kilometers (2.2 miles). It typically takes 3-4 hours to complete the trek, depending on one's fitness level. The route offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. 4 Religious Significance: Tungnath holds immense religious significance for Hindus, particularly devotees of Lord Shiva. It is believed to be one of the sacred sites where Lord Shiva's arms appeared after he took the form of a bull to evade the Pandavas. Pilgrims visit Tungnath to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva and to experience spiritual tranquility in the serene Himalayan environment. 5 Pilgrimage Circuit: As part of the Panch Kedar pilgrimage circuit, Tungnath is visited by devotees along with four other temples dedicated to Lord Shiva: Kedarnath, Madhyamaheshwar, Rudranath, and Kalpeshwar. The pilgrimage is considered a significant spiritual journey for devotees seeking self-realization and divine blessings. 6  Festivals: Several festivals are celebrated at Tungnath Temple throughout the year, with Maha Shivaratri being the most prominent. During this festival, thousands of devotees undertake the arduous trek to Tungnath to offer prayers to Lord Shiva and participate in religious ceremonies. 7 Conservation Efforts: Given its high-altitude location and fragile ecosystem, Tungnath, like other Himalayan temples, faces challenges related to environmental degradation and infrastructure development. Efforts are being made by the local government and environmental organizations to promote sustainable tourism and preserve the natural beauty of the region. Tungnath Temple stands not only as a symbol of religious devotion but also as a testament to the awe-inspiring beauty of the Himalayas and the rich cultural heritage of India.
