Chandrashila is the summit of the Tungnath peak. It literally means ‘Moon Rock’. It is located at a height of about 4,000 meters (13,000 feet) above sea level. This peak provides a spectacular view of Himalayas, especially Nandadevi, Trisul, Kedar Peak, Bandar punch and Chaukhamba peaks. The trek to Chandrashila is very popular amongst tourists. The trek to the peak is 5 kms long. The trek route that starts from Chopta takes one to Tungnath (the highest Shiva temple in the world); from here, it is a kilometer long, and a steep trek. Explore the Mystical Panch Kedar Yatra Routes
The Panch Kedar Yatra is a spiritual pilgrimage that takes devotees and trekkers through the breathtaking landscapes of the Himalayas to visit five sacred temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. Located in the serene and mystical state of Uttarakhand, these temples—Kedarnath, Tungnath, Rudranath, Madhyamaheshwar, and Kalpeshwar—are revered as some of the holiest shrines for Hindus. The journey is not just a testament to one’s devotion but also an adventure that brings travelers closer to nature and self-realization. In this article, we will delve into the details of the Panch Kedar Yatra routes, offering insights into the spiritual and scenic marvels that await.
Tumblr media
Overview of Panch Kedar Temples
The origin of the Panch Kedar Yatra is rooted in mythology. According to legend, after the Kurukshetra War, the Pandavas sought penance for killing their kin. They were advised to worship Lord Shiva, who, displeased with their actions, transformed into a bull and disappeared into the ground. His body reappeared in five different locations, which are now the Panch Kedar temples. These five temples collectively symbolize Shiva’s divine presence and are among the most challenging yet rewarding pilgrimages in India.
Kedarnath Temple: Located at an altitude of 3,583 meters, Kedarnath is the most renowned of the Panch Kedar temples. It is home to the hump of Shiva’s bull form.
Tungnath Temple: The world’s highest Shiva temple at 3,680 meters, Tungnath represents Shiva’s arms.
Rudranath Temple: Nestled in a dense forest, this temple houses the face of Shiva.
Madhyamaheshwar Temple: Located at 3,289 meters, this temple is where Shiva’s navel emerged.
Kalpeshwar Temple: The only Panch Kedar temple accessible throughout the year, it represents Shiva’s hair.
Routes of the Panch Kedar Yatra
The Panch Kedar Yatra is a combination of trekking and road journeys. Each route offers unique experiences and challenges, blending spiritual fulfillment with natural beauty.
1. Kedarnath Yatra Route
Starting Point: Gaurikund
Distance: 16 km trek
Highlights: The journey to Kedarnath begins at Gaurikund, a place known for its hot springs and spiritual significance. The trek is moderately challenging, taking you through lush forests, roaring waterfalls, and snow-capped mountains. The Kedarnath temple’s stunning backdrop of the Kedarnath range adds to its divine aura.
2. Tungnath Yatra Route
Starting Point: Chopta
Distance: 4 km trek
Highlights: Known as the "Mini Switzerland of India," Chopta serves as the base for the Tungnath trek. The short yet steep trail is adorned with rhododendron forests and panoramic views of the Himalayan peaks. Tungnath’s serene ambiance makes it a favorite among trekkers and devotees alike.
3. Rudranath Yatra Route
Starting Point: Sagar Village or Urgam Village
Distance: 20-24 km trek
Highlights: The trek to Rudranath is one of the most challenging in the Panch Kedar Yatra. The route takes you through dense forests, alpine meadows, and small streams. The temple’s location amidst a picturesque setting of wildflowers and towering peaks makes the arduous journey worthwhile.
4. Madhyamaheshwar Yatra Route
Starting Point: Ransi Village
Distance: 16 km trek
Highlights: The trail to Madhyamaheshwar is a mix of paved paths and rugged terrain, passing through quaint villages and green meadows. The temple’s unique location in a valley surrounded by snow-capped peaks creates a mesmerizing spiritual ambiance.
5. Kalpeshwar Yatra Route
Starting Point: Helang Village
Distance: 12 km trek
Highlights: The trek to Kalpeshwar is relatively easier compared to other Panch Kedar routes. It passes through apple orchards, terraced fields, and dense forests. The temple’s tranquil setting and accessibility throughout the year make it a special destination for pilgrims.
Best Time for Panch Kedar Yatra
The ideal time to undertake the Panch Kedar Yatra is between May and October. During this period, the weather is pleasant, and the routes are more accessible. Monsoon months (July and August) should be avoided due to the risk of landslides and slippery trails. Winter makes most of the temples inaccessible except for Kalpeshwar, which remains open year-round.
Preparation and Tips for the Yatra
The Panch Kedar Yatra demands physical fitness and mental determination. Here are some tips to help you prepare:
Physical Fitness: Regular cardio and strength training exercises are recommended to build stamina for the treks.
Packing Essentials: Carry warm clothing, trekking gear, sturdy shoes, and a first-aid kit. Lightweight backpacks are preferable.
Acclimatization: Spend a day acclimatizing at higher altitudes to avoid altitude sickness.
Local Guides: Hiring a local guide ensures safety and enhances your understanding of the region’s culture and history.
Sustainable Travel: Respect the environment by avoiding littering and adhering to eco-friendly practices.
Spiritual and Scenic Marvels
The Panch Kedar Yatra offers a harmonious blend of spiritual enlightenment and natural beauty. From the snow-clad peaks of Kedarnath to the forested trails of Rudranath, each temple is a testament to the divine connection between humanity and nature. The journey’s hardships are rewarded with breathtaking views, serene environments, and a deep sense of accomplishment.
Conclusion
The Panch Kedar Yatra is more than just a pilgrimage; it is a transformative experience that tests one’s faith, endurance, and love for nature. Traversing through the Himalayan wilderness to seek Lord Shiva’s blessings is a journey of spiritual awakening and inner peace. Whether you’re a devotee or an adventurer, the Panch Kedar Yatra promises memories that last a lifetime. Trekking Essentials and Tips for Chopta, Tungnath, and Chandrashila
Before embarking on the Chopta Tungnath trek or the Chandrashila summit trek, it's important to be well-prepared and carry the necessary gear. While these treks are considered moderate to easy, the high-altitude environment and weather conditions can make them challenging for some trekkers.
Essential Trekking Gear
Footwear: A good pair of trekking shoes with a solid grip is essential for the trek. Choose shoes that are waterproof, especially if you are trekking during the rainy season or winter.
Clothing: Dress in layers to ensure you can adjust to changing temperatures. A waterproof jacket, thermal wear, and gloves are recommended, especially in winter or early spring.

Journey to Chopta: Your trek begins with a scenic drive from Rishikesh or Haridwar, taking you through picturesque landscapes, mountain roads, and quaint villages. Chopta is about 7-8 hours away by road, and you will pass through destinations like Devprayag and Rudraprayag, where rivers meet in stunning confluence.
Base Camp: Upon reaching Chopta, check into your guesthouse or camp. The first day is dedicated to acclimatization, as you prepare for the trek ahead. The altitude and cold weather can take time to adjust to, so this is your chance to relax and soak in the winter beauty of the Chopta valley.
Bonfire and Stargazing: Chopta is known for its clear skies, making it a perfect spot for stargazing at night. If your itinerary includes a bonfire, it’s the perfect way to end the day in warmth, surrounded by the snowy landscape.
Day 2: Trek to Tungnath Temple
Distance: 3.5 km (one way)
Trek Time: 4-5 hours
The second day begins with an early morning trek to Tungnath Temple. At an altitude of 3,680 meters, this is the highest Shiva temple in the world and a key highlight of the Chopta Tungnath trip. The trek to Tungnath is moderately challenging, especially in winter when the trail is covered in snow.
Trail Details: As you ascend, you’ll walk through enchanting snow-covered meadows and forests, with glimpses of the Himalayas accompanying you along the way. The serene, white landscape, combined with the peaceful ambiance of the trail, makes this trek one to remember.
Tungnath Temple: Upon reaching the temple, you’ll be struck by its ancient architecture and the spiritual energy that surrounds the place. Although the temple is often closed during winter due to heavy snowfall, the view and ambiance are worth the trek.
Day 3: Trek to Chandrashila Peak

The next destination on your Chopta itinerary trek in winter is Chandrashila Peak, located 1.5 km above Tungnath Temple at an altitude of 4,000 meters. The trek is short but steep, and it’s considered the most challenging part of the journey, especially with snow underfoot.
Summit Views: The effort is rewarded with a 360-degree panoramic view of some of the highest peaks in the Indian Himalayas, including Nanda Devi, Kedarnath, Chaukhamba, and Trishul.
