Endless Possibilities of Natural Stone
Natural stone is an amazing substance that has fascinated mankind for millennia. Natural stone has made its way into many facets of human existence, from building and interior design to landscaping and creative expression, due to its inherent beauty, durability, and unique features. In this blog post series, we will travel through the enthralling world of natural stone, investigating various varieties, qualities, historical importance, and inventive uses that emphasise the ageless attraction and limitless potential of this magnificent material.
1. The Marble Wonders
Marble has played a significant role in architecture and art throughout history, and its use dates back thousands of years.Marble is a metamorphic rock made mostly of calcite or dolomite crystals that is prized for its beauty, durability, and range of colors and patterns. Carrara, Calacatta, and Emperador are three significant variations of marble, each with its own set of characteristics.Marble is a beautiful and long-lasting material, but it needs adequate care and upkeep to retain its aesthetic appeal over time. For regular cleaning, use a soft, wet cloth or a sponge. To avoid stains, wipe away spills as soon as they occur. Marble is porous, making it sensitive to liquids such as wine, coffee, and acidic chemicals.
2. The Allure of Granite
Granite is an igneous rock formed by the gradual crystallization of molten lava under the Earth's surface. It is classed as an intrusive igneous rock since it originates inside the Earth's crust. There are various granite colours and patterns, such as : 1. Absolute Black a deep, intense black granite it is known for its consistent and uniform color throughout the slab. 2. Kashmir White is characterized by its light, creamy white background with speckles of various colors, including burgundy, gray, and dark red. 3. Baltic Brown is known for its rich and warm brown tones, ranging from chocolate brown to lighter tan shades. It may also have small black, gray, and cream-colored minerals.Granite is renowned for its excellent hardness and durability. It is resistant to scratches, heat, and stains, making it ideal for high-traffic areas and extensive usage, such as kitchen counters. Granite is typically low-maintenance, although it does need regular sealing to avoid discoloration.
3. Limestone's Beauty
Limestone is a compelling and timeless natural stone with lasting appeal due to its diverse range of color and texture. Its flexibility and aesthetic appeal make it a popular option for a wide range of architectural and design applications.Limestone has been a popular construction material for ages, and several monuments throughout the world demonstrate its lasting beauty and durability. Two noteworthy examples are Egypt's Great Pyramids and Greece's Parthenon.Limestone, while durable and long-lasting, is susceptible to erosion over time due to various factors such as weathering, water exposure, and environmental pollutants. Understanding the erosibility of limestone is crucial for implementing proper maintenance procedures to preserve its aesthetic appeal and structural integrity.
4. Travertine Elegance
Travertine, a limestone formed by mineral springs, has a long history of usage in ancient Roman architecture. The Romans used travertine extensively in their architectural wonders, demonstrating its longevity, adaptability, and aesthetic appeal.Travertine is a kind of limestone formed by an unusual process, resulting in characteristic holes and veining patterns. Travertine formation is tightly related to geological and hydrological processes, resulting in a stone with unique features that distinguish it from other varieties of limestone.Limestone's capacity to withstand adverse weather and keep its beauty throughout time make it an exceptional and sought-after construction material. Its resistance to the weather adds to its appeal in a variety of architectural applications.
5. Sandstone's Enduring Beauty

We assure you of excellence in quality
From the shimmering aura of the Taj Mahal to the humble floor of your home’s bathroom, marble is one of the world’s most revered and useful natural materials. Marble is Michelangelo’s David, the Washington Monument, and the Duomo of Florence. It is also the primary ingredient in Tums antacid.
Tune into any kitchen design message board and you’ll encounter a sharp divide over the utility of marble. Some people wouldn’t dream of designing a kitchen without marble. Others decry that choice, citing marble’s imperfections and fragility. Many are caught somewhere in the middle: in love with marble’s irresistible appeal, but uncertain if it’s the right choice for their circumstance. In an attempt to create the “perfect” material, legions of synthetic products claim to look “just like marble,” but marble enthusiasts aren’t swayed. Few stones can match the warm glow, the softly flowing colors, the timelessness, and the authenticity of marble. There’s good reason this stone has been used for over 5,000 years.
A seabed, transformed
Marble is a metamorphic rock; it once was a different kind of rock, and was then transformed by a change of circumstance. Before marble becomes marble, it is first limestone, which forms on the shores and floors of tropical seas. Limestone is an accumulation of shells, shelly fragments, microscopically tiny shells, and dissolved shells. Depending on the conditions at a particular beach or sea, limestone’s shelly sediment may be punctuated with occasional layers of clay or lenses of sand. But by and large, limestone is an assortment of shell-remnants, which are made of the mineral calcite.
The tropical shoals that give rise to limestone do not stay peaceful indefinitely. Oceans are basically geologic conveyor belts. The ocean floor slowly spreads apart from the centre and slips underneath continents at the edges, gradually rearranging the map of the world.
When a limestone seabed gets dragged down into the Earth’s crust, the additional heat transforms the calcite grains and fuses them together tightly. The dynamic action of rock layers as they become buried, twisted, and shoved around causes the original flat-lying layers to bend, buckle, and swirl together. A rock in this heated state doesn’t melt. It’s simply warm and flexible, much like a chocolate bar left in your pocket. This process of heating and warping is responsible for marble’s trademark aesthetic of gracefully flowing bands of color. The grey swirls in marble are simply clay layers that got folded, smeared, and re-folded into the marble like a ribbon of chocolate infused throughout fudge ripple ice cream.
Patterns and color-ways give marble versatility and character
Part of what makes natural stone so appealing is the huge range of colors and variations expressed in solid rock. On one hand, these patterns tug on our heartstrings and offer aesthetic possibilities. On the other hand, each of these variations has its root in some sort of geologic process.
Most marble is white. The classic, white marble is pure calcite, without intervening minerals to lend it color. Yule and Thassos marbles are well-known examples of pristine white marbles. Marble can take on a delightful range of hues and textures. Pink marble is tinted by iron oxide, as is golden marble. Green marble and deep red marble contain serpentine, rich in magnesium. Fossil-rich limestone becomes graphite-infused marble, as the carbon in fish, algae, or seaweed reverts back to the elemental carbon in graphite when the rock is heated. Graphite-rich marble is steely grey with a metallic glimmer.
A marble breccia is formed when the stone fractures underground, which can happen if a stone lives in a fault zone. Mineral-laden groundwater comes to the rescue, filling in the voids and patching the fragments back into a solid mass, while creating a spectacular pattern at the same time. Arabescato is a beautiful example of a marble breccia.
It’s important to understand the properties of marble
The mineral content of marble is the same as the limestone it came from, and both of these stones are made of calcite, AKA calcium carbonate, AKA CaCO3. Calcite is one of the more common minerals on Earth’s surface; in addition to limestone and marble, calcite is the primary ingredient in travertine and onyx.
Calcite has a few properties that you should know about before you fall head over heels in love with a stunning marble slab. Calcite is 3 on Mohs hardness scale, which means it will get scratched by knife blades, ceramics, and a cast iron skillet accidentally slid across the kitchen island.
Calcite is also chemically reactive with common acids, such as those found in lemonade, wine, and colas. When acidic liquids land on a marble slab, a tiny amount of the stone is dissolved, or “etched.” This doesn’t affect the integrity of the stone, but it does leave a slight change in the color and/or lustre of the stone. On a polished stone, an etch looks like an unpolished area.
Etches can be polished out, or they can be left alone and considered part of the natural patina that marble will acquire over time.
Marble is ground up into antacid tablets because calcite neutralizes acid, which makes your stomach feel better. That also explains why acid makes a mark on marble. The marble reacts with the acid, neutralizing the acid, but damaging your countertop in the meantime. Ironically, when your teenager dribbles pickle juice on a brand-new countertop, you may find yourself reaching for the antacid, triggering the same chemical reaction both on the countertop and in your digestive tract.
The last piece of potentially bad news is that marble can form “star cracks” or “stun marks” if a heavy, hard object falls on it. Star cracks look like small, light-colored areas where the impact occurred. This is usually an aesthetic issue, not a structural one, but if an impact occurs at the edge of the stone, it can chip or flake.
A common misconception is that marble stains easily. However, this is actually quite rare. The metamorphism that bakes the stone also knits the minerals together tightly. Porosity for marble is similar for that of granite. That said, the porosity of all stones varies, so check the stone specs and do your own tests with a sample of stone. Marbles are typically sealed to reduce the likelihood of staining. Alas, sealing does not make marble any less prone to etching, I’m sorry to say.
Now you can see why some people love marble while others think that marble-lovers are crazy. To some, the nicks and etches on a marble surface add character and mark the passage of time in a busy household. To others, each blemish resonates as a personal loss. Which way do you see it? This is an important question to consider before you head to the slab yard. [Check your stone personality to see what stone suits your temperament.]
Marble with magnesium = Dolomite
Dolomitic marble is a close relative of regular marble. Standard marble is made of calcite (CaCO3), and dolomitic marble has a little magnesium in the mix (CaMgCO3). There is not a huge difference between the two variations, except that dolomitic marble is a little bit slower to etch. You’ll have a moment to wipe up a spill before the chemical reaction takes place.
Marble with quartz = Confusing
While marble is primarily made of calcite, it’s possible for the original limestone to have occasional layers of sand or chert (chert is a marine rock made of pure silica). These interlopers turn into areas of quartz as marble undergoes metamorphism. The end result is a stone that is mostly calcite with some quartz. This combination of ingredients has kicked off industry-wide confusion, because calcite and quartz have distinctly different properties but they look alike.
Unfortunately, marble that contains minor amounts of quartz is sometimes labelled “soft quartzite,” which is both an oxymoron and a misnomer. There is no such thing as soft quartzite, and that term should be avoided by dealers, designers, and customers alike. Marble that contains small areas of quartz is still marble and should just be called marble. Super White is one well-known example of a mislabelled stone. Super White is a dolomitic marble with occasional bits of quartz. Super White is neither quartzite nor “soft quartzite.” It’s marble, and a gorgeous one at that. [Learn more about the quartzite/marble labelling problem in The Definitive Guide to Quartzite,
Limestone is sometimes classified as marble
The term “marble” is often applied broadly rather than literally. Many stone restoration professionals categorize marbles, limestones, and travertines together as a family of stone because they require similar maintenance and refinishing techniques. Polished limestone is sometimes called marble. While there’s not a huge difference between the two, marble is much denser and therefore is resistant to staining. If a slab has fossils, shell fragments, or has open pockets within the stone, it is limestone.
Many stones classified as black marble are actually black limestones. This is particularly true for dark colored stones with stark white veins, like China Black, Dynasty Brown, or Nero Portoro. Because marble has origins as a fluid, heated rock, its stripes and veins are usually soft, flowing, and curved rather than angular.
Many ways to bring marble into our lives
Marble remains a popular choice for countertops, backsplashes, bathrooms, tabletops, flooring, and cladding. Marble’s versatility makes it at home in an ancient Greek sculpture, in a lavish hotel lobby, or on a hardworking kitchen island. Marble also finds its way into our lives as household objects like cheese boards, rolling pins, vases, and lamps.
Despite the emergence of marble lookalikes, there’s nothing quite like the real thing. Real marble has qualities that cannot be replicated in a lab. I recently visited the 9/11 Memorial, a sobering space of monument, museum, and reflection. Next to the footprint of the fallen towers, rises the one part of the site that inspires optimism. Called the Oculus, it is part transit center, part shopping mall, and its soaring white ribs beckon investigation.
Visitors who step inside are rewarded with a vast, cathedral-like space, covered in pure white marble. The combination of natural light, natural stone, and creative architecture transform the sombre mood into a hopeful one. Wandering around the expansive structure, I finally put my finger on my favourite quality of real marble. Light penetrates into the white stone, then radiates back out in heavenly luminosity, filling the room with a warm, soft glow. Leave it to a stone like marble to completely alter the mood of a building. Marble has been a metaphor for worship, reverence, and beauty for millennia. Its ability to do that is all the more appreciated

Grand Canyon Rafting Day 7: I saw a lot of photos of the Colorado River before starting this trip. Sometimes it's blue, sometimes it's more olive colored, and sometimes it's brown. I had hoped the river would stay blue for us; I didn't like the idea of a chocolate milk river. The river changes color when sediment from upstream gets washed down and into the main channel following rain. After it rained two nights ago, I figured the river turn brown, but it stayed blue all day yesterday. I thought perhaps it hadn't rained enough to wash the chocolate loose from the upstream washes. But today, the river is chocolate milk. I've heard that once the river turns brown it takes a long time to turn back to blue. I accept that we've seen the last of the blue Colorado. Today we're passing the Paayu (Little Colorado River) - a tributary that's bright blue in color because of dissolved travertine and limestone in the water. This blue can be washed out by rains as well, so we didn't have high hopes of finding the bright blue water when we woke up to find the river brown. It must have rained the perfect amount because the water is still bright blue and the contrast with the brown in the main flow at the confluence is remarkable. On top of that, we have sun! This, despite the guide book saying we would find none (this guidebook is proving to not be 100% accurate). After lunch and activities, we continue to camp at Lava Carbon Camp. Day: Upper Nankoweap to Lava Canyon Camp Rapids: Kwagunt Rapid (5), 60-Mile Rapid (4) Distance: 12 mi / 19.3 km #LavaCanyonCamp #GrandCanyon

Esoteriko, Bunker In The Treetops
A mid-century flavoured decorative approach directly draws from the unique natural vista to inform shapes, scale, texture, and colour in this Double Bay home.
Customised and handcrafted, the home features an almost artisanal approach to ‘soften its concrete structure, and provide comfortable settings with a strong emphasis on materiality. Esoteriko says the project blurs the boundary between design and decoration.
YSG Studio, Dream Weaver
Winners of 2020 TDF + Laminex Design Awards Interior Design award YSG have again been recognised in 2021 with two new projects.
The first is Dream Weaver, – a Rushcutters Bay penthouse renovation that feels revelatory and futuristic, with an upbeat dose of Pedro Almodóvar’s cinematic eccentricity. Project inspirations include surrealism, contemporary Spanish tapas bars and their liberal use of tiling, plus rich colour gradations evoking a material take on the northern lights.

Edition Office, Melburnian Apartment
Edition Office‘s design response to this Melbourne apartment renovation is inherently simple, refined, and calming to restore and create freedom. A sanctuary for rest and recharging, but also a space which challenges the mind to perform.
‘Continuous function’ curves have been employed throughout to elevate the quality of light and shadow to move effortlessly around the rounded forms of the home without any abrupt changes in the quality of light or shadow. The clients now move through the space in a continuous evolving and smooth loop.
Architects EAT, Carpenter’s Square House
Noting this Caulfield East property’s existing solar orientation, context, and the project budget, Architects EAT devised a simple extension that juts out from the original heritage home, before wrapping around the rear like a carpenter’s square.
In contrast to its simple form, the new interiors are richly detailed, with materials reflective of the original architecture. Most notably, the dusty purple brick band on the facade has been amplified to become the interior floor and walls, while the concave battened ceiling is a contemporary interpretation of decorative period styles.

Adam Kane Architects, Barwon Heads House
Textural and moody, Barwon Heads House by Adam Kane Architects takes cues from its relaxed coastal setting to offer a space of refuge and calm for its young inhabitants. The interior design deliberately reveals itself as one journey’s from old into new, and aims to challenge the stereotypical beachside aesthetic.
Upon entering the renovated home, the light interior is immediately present and carefully contrasted with new charcoal floorboards. Complementing the desaturated timber ceilings and joinery, slabs of silver travertine and burnished concrete floors are supplemented with hand-scratched solid plaster walls in a soft, warm ‘bone’ colour.
Hugh-Jones Mackintosh, The Weave House
Faced with an overwhelming amount of dark timber joinery and chocolate-hued floors, the new owners of this house on Sydney’s North Shore called on Hugh-Jones Mackintosh to lighten and brighten the interior for their young family. The home had only been built a few years earlier, but the heaviness of its interior fitout did not match the sunny position or the tranquil views of Sydney Harbour from the upstairs rooms.
In sanding back the floors and repainting, the home now offers a sense of youthful vitality at every turn. Texture, shapely furniture, and pops of blush and terracotta throughout the decoration lend interest and sophistication.

Maria Danos Architecture, Henry Street Townhouse
A sophisticated yet robust design approach underpins this twin townhouse development in inner-city Melbourne by Maria Danos Architecture. Interiors are flexible anticipating multiple work/dwell scenarios through the considered composition, function and materiality.
Internally, the stair void acts a sculptural insertion with soft corners to enhance spatial flow, and as a conduit of light drawing luminosity from north roof terraces into internal bathrooms and down into the heart of the home at ground floor. Framed by the void, interiors are experienced as dramatic, materially expressive compositions appreciated as aerial perspectives from above, as well as below.
Fox Johnston, SRG House
The 1970s heritage-listed former house of Sir Roy Grounds in Balmain has been reengineered for contemporary family life. Keeping within the building footprint, Fox Johnston carved extra space and forged stronger connections to landscape and place, while maintaining the integrity of the original structure and material language.
The former two-bedroom home now contains four bedrooms with an additional two-bedroom granny flat. Materials and colours mirror the original palette of painted brick, cedar windows and concrete.

Studio Esteta, Mornington Peninsula House. Photo – Sharyn Cairns.
Lauren Egan Design, Victoria Street
A calm and gentle space, but nothing too serious, was this brief for the updated interiors in this 1920s Preston home. Functionality was key, especially in the kitchen, offering plenty of space to gather as a family to entertain.
A Scandinavian meets Japanese aesthetic characterises the updated interiors by Lauren Egan Design. To address the feel of a welcoming and gentle space, a soft palette of toasty browns and muddy greys inherent in the home’s oak and burnished concrete flooring as selected. Flourishes of colour inspired both by the two jacaranda trees in the home’s front and backyards, and a penchant for electric blue, injects further interest and fun.
Studio Esteta, Mornington Peninsula House
The renovation of this Merchant Builders home on the Mornington Peninsula demonstrates considered spatial planning and acute attention to detail, resulting in a design that is harmonious with the landscape, yet reflective of today’s modern living approach.
Through the introduction of new openings and the implementation of a clever and considered layout, both the aesthetics and function of the residence were entirely altered by Studio Esteta. A palette of warm timbers, textured stone and paving mimics the textures and tones of the rolling paddocks and surrounding gums, working cohesively together to create an unpretentious yet modern rural home.

Rosanna Ceravolo Design, South Yarra Apartment
A longing for ceremony underpins the design approach to this 1920s South Yarra art deco apartment renovation by Rosanna Ceravolo. The project maximises amenity through the implementation of robust and enduring materials, with a view to maintaining the place as a rental property going forward.
Though used sparingly, soft colours and light, textural details such as speckled flooring have an important connective effect. The same terrazzo-like surface appears in different rooms throughout the house – the fireplace, bathroom cabinetry, kitchen splashback and entryway – to create flow throughout the otherwise simple spaces.
YSG Studio, Soft Serve
YSG’s second shortlisted project is this Rozelle home, revived with an ‘adroit telescoping of eras and artistic influences.’
Preserving its historical essence as a purpose built late 19th-century Victorian Georgian corner shop, the three-storey sandstone structure has transitioned into a pragmatic and spacious home for a family of four. Furnishings and fixtures subtly reference Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s delicate Art Nouveau flourishes and the quiet restraint of timber framing devices prevalent in traditional Japanese interiors. Bold hues and textures harmoniously mingle with whisper soft sensuality.

Indian Natural Stone Suppliers
There are varied kinds of Natural stones or building stones available in India. They are GRANITE, MARBLE, TRAVERTINE, SLATE, QUARTZITE, sandstone and LIMESTONE.
We should choose the stone relying upon the area environment (Look of the area) and its usage.
SLATE STONE: These are the softest stone and might be pealed out with any regular pressure. These are suggested for wall cladding and low activity floors with proper sealing. Slate stones are available in Natural, Tumbled and polished finish; however, the beauty of this stone is a lot of visible in only Natural finish.
QUARTZITE STONE: These are more durable than slate, because of quartz particles in it and are mostly used for interior protection and flooring. Used also for Tabletops. Quartzite stone is available in Natural, Tumbled, Polished and Brushed Antique finish. Natural, polished and Brushed of these varieties have their different look and pull out the beauty escaped in the depth of the stone.
TRAVERTINE STONE: it's a soft stone and mostly used to offer an antique look to the wall. It looks antique within the natural finish and mostly available in tile size.
SANDSTONE: it's a soft stone and mostly suggested to use outside the building in Natural finish for protection and garden/pathway flooring. Interior walls in Natural, polished, sandblasted n brushed finish. It absorbs water in no time and it will take significant hot and cold temperatures. Choose between fabulous and colorful blended mosaic tile designs!
Decisions may be difficult like a choice between natural stone and glass mosaics for the kitchen backsplash. A mixture of materials is available for many good reasons! Blends are stylish and intensely interesting besides the eternal appeal. How exactly is mosaics born? Look at home decor magazines and the illustrations of throw pillows. These throw pillows bring together several designs, colors, and materials. The pillows may not be attractive separately, but together they seem to be highly stylized.
Now let us create those interesting glass and stone combination kitchen backsplash tiles. Bring together glass mosaic and stone of varied scales, the meaning of different sizes. One could be small, the other of medium or large size. Featuring balanced characteristics turns out to be possible, like the size of one and the color of the other.
Next, be certain that the two colors are similar in tone. Perhaps the natural stone has creams or bright whites. Bright white is a cool shade and you would choose a complementary cool glass mosaic tile, maybe opaque green or blue. If the stone is a warm shade like cream, the glass mosaic would have a warm color like brown or taupe.
The approach is rather straightforward. Keep those two elements in mind and combine mosaics and natural stones for dainty kitchen backsplashes.
1. Arabescato Carrara and Keystone Blend Interlocking Pattern
Why not combine the cool gray Carrara marble with the cool greens and neutral shades? If the home is located in a coastal area or the family loves the grand outdoors, this is the ideal combination.
2. Arctic Storm Brick Pattern
Adopt a more traditional approach with this combination! The glass tiles remind of the bricks usually found in a colonial style building. The Grecian white tiles reflect the brick design on a bigger scale.
3. Black Marquee Stone & Glass and Arabescato Carrara Marble
A black and white pattern looks smart and contemporary. This backsplash design with glass mosaic tiles in a diamond pattern is ultimately elegant.
4. Brown Blend Glass and Ivory Travertine
A relaxed plain design, this color scheme matches well with wood cabinets.
5. Aspen Interlocking Glass And Ivory Travertine
Mosaics arranged vertically.
6. Arabescato Carrara Herringbone Pattern
Herringbone mosaics achieve elegant backsplashes.
7. Sonoma Blend and Emperador Dark
Crackle glass combines with chocolate marble for a rustic appeal.
8. Crystal Vista and Highland Park
Neutral gray and brown shades create a warm mosaic.

Measures In Choosing The Best Flooring Company
A homeowner typically focuses on specific areas that need improvement in regards to renovating. In case your paint has finger smudges and is chipping from your walls, you repaint your inside. The trouble? There are limitless flooring options, and it is tough to narrow them down. Hardwood floor is undoubtedly typically the most popular choice in the last several years. There are various selections of design and colour of hardwood floor, including short boards, long boards, plus a mixture of designs and sizes. The upkeep is considerably less than that of broadloom carpets, as it is straightforward flooring. Just sweep away your dust bunnies and enjoy your flooring. Hardwood is also extremely durable and long lasting, in the event you happen to drop something on them out of the blue, and several designs won't chip or crack. If you find the expanse of the floor throughout your home a bit on the chilly and tough side, you can add a variety of area rugs.
Ceramic tile comes in more varieties than ever, and it's definitely the flooring of choice for front entrances, bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry rooms. You can find many various kinds of ceramic tile, from terra cotta to polished white. High-end tile like travertine is an all-natural jewel that provides a lovely finish to your flooring. Although exceptionally durable when polished and sealed, unsealed travertine flooring can split and break in heat or when something falls on it. Always be sure that your flooring is sealed and installed by a professional. Broadloom carpet is the most common flooring you will find in dwellings. The types of carpeting are many, and the selection comes down to personal taste. Current trends in carpet are a neutral short pile for each room in your home, as well as very long, soft shag in chocolate browns and taupes. It is consistently better to locate a colour that's not too light, specially if you have little children who will frequently be spilling on the carpet.
You may wish to select different colours for your kids 's bedrooms, as carpet can come in colors of pink or blue that your children are certain to adore. When purchasing carpeting, resist the impulse to buy underlay that is less expensive. Carpet with thicker underlay feels more cushy playing on the floor with your children or when walking through your house. Thin underlay gives off the feeling of concrete right under your carpet. Picking to a laminate wood flooring is a huge commitment at home. Is it a pretty pricey endeavour, but its also not simple to alter should you end up disliking it. Bringing and research samples will allow you to choose your family, best, along with the flooring that suits you.

4 REASONS PEOPLE ON THE GULF COAST LOVE TRAVERTINE FLOORING
When it comes to picking the flooring for your home, the choices are overwhelming. Even if you narrow it down to stone, there are thousands of choices. Each type of stone has its own merits, and here are a few things you should know about travertine:
1. IT NEVER GOES OUT OF STYLE. The natural colors are timeless. The neutral beiges and browns are the normal colors, but some dark browns and chocolates are available. This limestone rock is porous and striated with color, so instead of choosing a single color, you will choose a palette of colors to adorn your floors.
2. IT WORKS WITH ANY DÉCOR. The stone can be filled, and smoothed to a polished finish for an elegant and sleek look and feel, or left rustic for a more original appearance and rough texture. You may change your interior design years down the road, but you can count on the travertine flooring being a beautiful complement to any design elements you bring in.
3. IT WILL LAST FOREVER. One of the oldest building materials, travertine was an ancient building material in the Greco-Roman era. Many of these pieces are still intact. The Colosseum was built with travertine, and it stands, although in ruins. It was so durable that it was used for roads! Its durability is renowned, and it is a onetime application, lasting as long as the building surrounding it. If you seek something that you truly will never have to do again in your lifetime, consider travertine.
4. IT WILL GO FROM INSIDE TO OUTSIDE SEAMLESSLY. Although beautiful inside the home, this gorgeous stone will also shine when carried through to the outside living space. Very popular around pools and hot tubs, it is slip-resistant and heat-resistant. Even in the Gulf Coast sunshine the lighter colors will stay cool on bare feet. As outdoor living has become an extension of our indoor space, using more durable tiles in the outdoor area has become the norm, and nothing says this is part of your main living space like using the same flooring.
As well as the floors, you may want to consider travertine for other tiling projects through the house. It makes beautiful shower surrounds, countertops, and backsplashes. Hours may be spent looking at the hundreds of options for travertine tile. For some applications, you may want to seal it occasionally, as it will stain. However, with proper care, it will be beautiful for generations.

Previously a beachside hippie mecca, these days Byron is known for its impeccable, breezy aesthetic and pitch-perfect thrown-togetherness. Longtime design curators Tigmi Trading perfectly encapsulate that vibe. Now even more so, with their new flagship store!
Tigmi founder, Danielle McEwan, and her husband designed the space themselves, completing their transformation of a daggy, besser brick industrial building over the pandemic period last year. ‘We wanted it to be a large-scale, open-plan space that could act as a showroom, a functional working space, our office headquarters, our dispatch and enable us to shoot new product on-site,’ Danielle explains.
Their clear vision involved using raw, natural materials to make the cavernous space feel warm and inviting, while still retaining its awe-inspiring scale. A central part of this plan was bringing on the couple’s friend Steve Clark (aka denHolm) to create a distinctive feature wall, with custom shelving and two additional carved ‘characters’ that flank the entry.
Danielle used a plaster render to sweep the exterior that would replicate the ‘old’ feel of the facades of her favourite buildings in European cities like Paris and Milan; while internally, a natural render gives a more tactile finish. An enormous set of steel doors make a statement at the entryway, and the front desk is wrapped in chocolate brown zellige tile (traditional clay tiles from Morocco) – a feature Danielle describes as ‘a little jewel in the middle of the store.’
The showroom itself is filled with the brand’s own rugs, furniture and a mixture of pieces from local and international makers. Ceramics from Soft Edge Studio sit atop rough-hewn timber tables by Lex Williams, while woven Berber rugs from Morocco carpet the floor, underneath rattan armchairs handmade in India. Ceiling-high steel shelving occupies one wall, housing one-of-a-kind furniture pieces, salon style.
Though Tigmi have held onto their original retail space at the Newrybar Merchants design collective in central Byron, this new flagship has everything under one roof!
