Tacenda {Kim Jongin} Soulmate Au (Part II)

part I

the man introduced himself as kyungsoo, yoonseo’s soulmate. you two exchanged numbers after the wedding was over with promises to talk keep in touch. at first it was a bit hard and awkward to text kyungsoo. you knew nothing about the man except your soulmate married his. but after finding a common interest in cooking, you guys instantly bonded. soon the texting changed into calling. calling turned into going out to eat together. going out to eat turned into a date. that one date turned into multiple. before you knew it, you were dating kyungsoo and he moved into the apartment you once shared with yoonseo and jongin.

when kyungsoo moved in, the two of you spent the afternoon talking about rules and boundaries. you guys had only been dating for three months. you would still sleep in separate rooms, but otherwise share everything else. surprisingly, it was easy to live with kyungsoo. he always cleaned up after himself, never left the tv on, and sometimes would surprise you with dinner when you got home. he also quickly learned when you wanted company and when you wanted to be left alone. in return you wouldn’t bother him when he’s reading and would join him for movies.

six months into the relationship, you and kyungsoo shared a bed for the first time and said ‘i love you.’ the words that came out of your mouth surprised you. you knew you could love another person beside your soulmate, but you just never thought you would. kyungsoo smiled, his lips formed their classic heart shape and his eyes curled up as he repeated the words after you. that night was one of the best nights in all of your lives.

as time went on and you continued dating kyungsoo, you couldn’t help but notice the differences between him and jongin. kyungsoo smiles more while jongin is always laughing. kyungsoo had a quick, hot temper while jongin had a slow, wet temper. you could tease kyungsoo, and he would make fun of you right back. if you tried to tease jongin, he would most likely take it to heart, especially if it was about one of his flaws.

kissing kyungsoo was like slipping into a warm sweater after a cold day. it was like taking a large sip of hot tea and leftover whip cream on the top of your lip from hot chococalte. kissing kyungsoo was slow, just like a fire that dies in the middle of the night. kissing jongin was like bathing in the sun. it was like gulping down ice cold lemonade and getting ice cream all over your hands. kissing jongin was fast, just like fireworks bursting into the night sky.

they were similar in all the ways they weren’t.

yoonseo and jongin attended yours and kyungsoo’s wedding. they sat in the first row and both clapped as the two of you shared the kiss. jongin was the one who handed you a gift and yoonseo was the one who dragged him away. you hadn’t seen the couple in a few months, but you didn’t care to catch up. you were too happy to care.

you and kyungsoo kept the apartment you’ve been living in since college. after all, it had two extra bedrooms and that was enough space for a nursery. when news that you were expecting first arrived, all of your friends knew about it, including jongin. he even came over to help decorate the nursery. if there was anything in the world he adored, it was children. he so desperately wanted kids, he told you once. he wanted to watch his kids run around in a backyard chasing the dogs. he wanted it more than anything, but yoonseo didn’t like children. so he settled on having a dog.

when your first child was born, jongin was named the godfather. it was actually kyungsoo who suggested it, and you agreed. when your son, jongdae, was brought home, jongin was at your apartment anytime he could. he constatnly asked to hold the baby, to feed the baby, and even to change him. normally a new mother would be worried, but you weren’t concerned. you’ve had too many children to count with jongin once before. 

before your second and third child was born, you and kyungsoo bought a house together. after all the furniture was arranged, a large party that doubled as a baby shower was held. jongin dragged yoonseo with him. it was the first time you saw her in a year. she looked uncomfortable to be there, but still made nice conversation with everyone. that night when all the guests left and kyungsoo was putting jongdae to bed, jongin confessed to you. he quietly whispered how he and yoonseo were fighting a lot. how she would always go out with friends to clubs and bars. how she never seemed satisfied. how she always put jongin down whenever he tried to do something for himself. you would’ve told him the reason why yoonseo and him weren’t getting along, but you weren’t his in this life.

your twins chanyeol and baekhyun grew up with jongin as a babysitter. on weekends they would come home with stories about where their ‘uncle’ took them and all the books he read them. they absolutely adored jongin and would tell him anything. 

it was one friday night when your big secret was let out. you and kyungsoo were on a date night. that meant jongin watching the three kids. jongdae was too busy watching a singing competition to listen to the book that jongin was reading.

“and that’s why everyone marries their soulmate,” jongin finished with a smile. he had baekhyun sitting on his lap while chanyeol peered over his arms.

“mommy and daddy says you don’t have to marry your soulmate,” baekhyun said as he looked up to his uncle.

jongin’s smiled faltered. he didn’t know how to respond to that. he knew that people now didn’t always marry their soulmate, wanting to break free from fate. but most parents told their kids that they would end up marrying their soulmate. he always thought you and kyungsoo would be one of those parents, the two of you were soulmates after all.

chanyeol nodded, his wide eyes surprisingly serious. “yeah, mommy and daddy said it was alright to marry someone else. but you have to make sure you’ll love them for a long time.”

“yes, you certainly could.” jongin placed the book so he could focus fully on both children. “but most people love their soulmates.”

chanyeol shook his head. “not mommy and daddy. their soulmates married someone else before they could. they are not soulmates and they love each other very much.” baekyhyun nodded at his twin’s statement.

jongin was silent. for some reason, everything made sense. why he was so taken with you and yoonseo during high school. why he felt so at home when the three of you shared an apartment. why all the smiles and laughter was brought from his memories. why all the warmth he felt slowly died when he got married. his soulmate was never yoonseo. she never understood jongin, nor did she try to. his soulmate was someone who actually knew him. who knew his favorite dog was a poodle and he loves to mess with other people’s food. who knew that you couldn’t make fun of his mistakes and smothering his constant giggles was pointless. his soulmate was you. it always has been.
