Everything happened so fast, from Niragi shooting Chishiya the first time, the ex-militant challenging them to a shootout, to your boyfriend-but not protecting Usagi from getting shot, taking the brunt of it as he fell to the ground. Arisu had shot Niragi, sending him flying off from the car that he was standing on.
“Chishiya!” Your scream echoed throughout the empty street as you ran toward the man you were in love with. “No, no, no, no...” You kept repeating to yourself as you put pressure on his wound. “You’re okay, Shuntaro, you’re okay.” Usually, Chishiya would’ve chided you for using his first name, but with the pain coming from his chest to the panic in your eyes, he couldn’t find himself able to muster up the energy to do so.
Arisu said your name, placing a hand on your shoulder as you turned to look at him with tears in your eyes. “We have to move him.” And move him you guys did, leaning him up against a car where you sat down next to him. “You’re not coming to the final game with us?” Usagi asked. You shook your head, taking your lover’s weak hand in yours. “No, I- I can’t leave him like this.” You whispered. “Don’t be an idiot.” You heard Chishiya say next to you. “I’m not. I’m staying here.” You said firmly. “What if something happens?” Arisu was unsure about leaving you out here in the open, so vulnerable.
“Then it happens, and I’ll handle it, but you guys have to go.” Usagi and Arisu shared a look before they both bent down to hug you, Usagi sparing you an even harder squeeze before she pulled away begrudgingly.
Back when you had first arrived at the Beach, you had found friendship within the mountain climber, the woman making this world much more bearable, fighting side by side with you as you completed games together. You could even say that she had grown to become your best friend.
“Why would you do that?” You turned your attention to the stubborn man. “Because I wanted to.”
A peaceful silence settled around the two of you before you broke it.
“You know, this was not the place I had imagined falling in love in.” There was a bitter smile on your face as you turned to look at him. “I guess there’s no reason to keep it a secret anymore. I love you, Chishiya Shuntaro, no matter how cruel or unempathetic you’ve been to me. I- I don’t regret meeting you, don’t regret being a part of your stupid plan back at the Beach, that I had finally found you again.” You had begun to tear up as he just stared at you. “I don’t know who I am to you, I don’t know if you feel the same despite all those nights we shared together in secret. I don’t know what waits for us on the other side, I- I don’t even know if were going to make it out of this, but if we do, I swear, I will find you.”
“I do.” He groaned. “You what?” You asked with furrowed brows. “I feel the same.” You laughed deliriously, looking like a lunatic with dried blood and tears on you. “Who knew it would take you until you were dying to tell me.” Your comment had caused that shit-eating smirk you loved but also hated so much to spread on his face. You leaned down hesitantly, placing a kiss on his lips. He reciprocated your affections the best he could before your amorous exchange was interrupted by the question of,
“Say yes if you would like permanent residency, say no if you wish to return.”
“What are you going to pick?” You asked after you firmly declared that no, you do not want to stay there. “I don’t want it, I think.” You smacked him light-heartedly, “Don’t be an ass.” He snorted. His hands squeezed yours to bring your attention back to him. “What do you think is going to happen now?” You were overcome with anxiety as you asked him. “I don’t know.” And that was the last thing he had said to you before everything went black.

One moment you were walking to your favorite convenience store, the next there were comets flying in the sky in broad daylight before disaster struck. For the moments that you had been rendered unconscious, you felt as though you had been sent to a far away before you were awoken by EMT’s pulling your body out from under the rubble of fallen buildings, frantically searching for life behind your bleary eyes. Your body was assaulted by overwhelming feelings of pain in every single part of you during your short-lived consciousness, before you had passed out, once again.
Beeping. There was annoying beeping sounding from all around you. Groaning, you peeled your eyes open, which felt like they had been encrusted closed. ‘A hospital room, how lovely’ you couldn’t help but think. “What the hell happened?” You mumbled to yourself, your voice a terrible rasp. A nurse tending to another patient turned to answer you. “There was a comet that destroyed Shibuya. Your heart, and many others even stopped for a minute.” It was almost impossible to wrap your head around what she was saying. It felt way longer than a minute.
Turning your head to your right, you were met with a man with long bleached blonde hair, just staring off into the distance in front of him.
“You in here for the same thing?” You couldn’t help but ask. When he turned to look at you, something familiar settled in your gut. His eyes made you angry as well as shy, like you had gazed into them many times before. “Mhm.” Was all that you had gotten back from him. It was a short response, a valid one to give someone you didn’t know, but he didn’t stop looking at you either. Your heart sped up, which was obvious due to the machine hooked up to you.
The day had bled into night, and upon further inspection from doctors, you were cleared to go home the next day with only a broken arm. A part of you didn’t want to leave your roommate that you had grown fond to in such a short amount of time. Even though you two had soon gotten to know each other through the night, it felt like you had already known that he was a doctor before he had told you, like it wasn’t anything new. He didn’t look all that surprised when you told him about your life as well, as if he felt the same. You grew to find that his name was Chishiya.
You didn’t have much to take home from the hospital, besides your dirty clothes that you had reluctantly put back on. There was dirt and grime all over them, but it felt better than walking out into the busy streets of Tokyo in those hospital gowns that made you feel like you were naked. It was safe to say you were disappointed to find the man that you had embarrassingly grown a crush on in such a short amount of time was gone from his bed, sheets rustled and blanket discarded.
Letting out a sigh, you left the room, heading towards the stairs until you heard someone pipe up from behind you.
“Leaving without saying goodbye?” Chishiya asked in amusement. You turned around, a small smile on your face. “I didn’t know where you were.” He leant on his crutch so that he could lift a bottle of juice clasped in his free hand before lowering his arm back down. “Have they told you when you’re going to be released?” He hummed, “Tomorrow.” He said simply before taking a sip of his drink. His eyes stayed trained on you as you looked to the side before back to him.
“I- uh. Goodbye?” You chuckled awkwardly. Chishiya swallowed his drink, fighting against the whirlwind of emotions brewing inside of him. Even though his face didn’t show it, he felt a constant pull towards you, he did even before you had awakened from your slumber, unable to help his curiosity as he found himself in a hospital room. It was at that moment that he realized that he couldn’t let you go, something inside of him couldn’t allow you to leave.
“A coffee couldn’t hurt.” Was all he said. Your eyebrows furrowed before they raised. “Are you asking me out?” You asked unsurely, albeit hopefully.
He hummed. “If that’s what you’d like to call it.” You broke out into a fuller smile this time. “Then yes, a coffee couldn’t hurt.”

Tumblr media
Death doesn’t discriminate between sinners or saints.
As you lay there on the ground with the smell of cinder filling your nose and the heat of the scorching fire warming your skin, your mind brings you back to the means you had to go through to live another day in Borderland. You’ve lied, beaten, betrayed, and killed to survive. You hadn’t expected the ten of hearts game to appear just as you leave Chishiya. You also hadn’t expected the massacre of the Beach through a witch hunt. Everything about this is unexpected, just like everything that has happened so far in this world you didn’t ask to be in.
Niragi missed anything vital or permanently life-altering, you know that much given your medical background. He missed the femoral artery, you were pretty sure about it. Well, not that he was aiming for it when he started his reckless free-shooting. You were one of the bodies thrown off to the ground and was shot in the leg.
Arisu and Usagi scream for you as you hit the ground with a thud, your arms stopping your head from the impact. With a groan, you lie your head on the ground in defeat.
Usagi starts moving instead of checking on you, maneuvering and avoiding the distraught running bodies and bullets.
You didn’t feel it at first, and then it started to hurt like a bitch that you wanted to die right there and then. How do you survive this? You immediately start thinking. The bleeding has to be stopped, for sure. How deep is the wound? That’s the first thing you have to check. But why can’t you move? You’re so tired.
You turn your head to your left, Usagi has jumped on Niragi’s back, distracting him from his shooting rampage. Arisu comes to her aid, trying to take the gun from Niragi. In return, he gets repeatedly hit in the back by the gunned man in the process.
Arisu couldn’t do it. He had too much injury and was weakened by the constant beating.
Niragi was able to overpower him and kick him to the floor. He spins with his strength, sending Usagi’s body away from his back and flying to the floor with a loud impact.
“Usagi!” you scream, despair not hidden in your voice.
You attempt to sit up, adrenaline rush filling your senses to be able to save your friends. This was game over for you. You have no one to go back to in the real world. Chishiya is safe, you’re sure of it. Kuina is still here so he might be here too. He had to get the last card of the deck, of course. But he’ll be fine.
With a shot leg, you won’t be able to get far anyway.
Arisu quickly crawls in front of Usagi in a useless attempt to protect her from Niragi as he aims his gun at the both of them. They’re both weak and tired, there was no escaping from Niragi as they were his sole target.
“You…” Niragi mutters. “I’ll kill all of you!”
Your body was moving before you even knew it. As if you hadn’t had your thigh injured, you sprint over as a head start and jump to where the perverted asshole is. Your heart raced faster than your feet did as you shouted with all your might, raising your uninjured leg as you flew in the air. You succeed in getting Niragi’s attention as he looks up at you with wide eyes. Unlike Usagi, you don't jump to his back, instead your foot slams into his head, sending him flying across the floor.
This attack had you rolling on the ground and then on your stomach when you land. Coughs sputter out of your mouth as the burning building’s smoke begins to affect your lungs.
Arisu and Usagi could only look at you with stunned wide opened eyes and raised brows as you landed a few feet away from them.
“Run!” You scream at them with tight fists as you attempt to get back up again. It seems the adrenaline rush was no longer there to help you as you struggle to support yourself again.
Niragi was getting up again. This makes you furrow your brows and groan, tears forming in your eyes in frustration as you slam your fists on the ground. There was no time. If the two try to run away in their bad state, they’ll be shot dead by Niragi.
You’re fucked.
Why can’t this motherfucker just die? you grimaced.
You drag your body with whatever strength you have, barely sitting up as you stare down at the man who had just gotten up to his feet with difficulty and a hand on his bleeding head.
Just as Niragi raises his weapon, like a raging bull, Aguni rushes in and attacks him, pushing himself and Niragi into the spreading fire deeper inside the building. You could no longer see their bodies but shots were heard.
“Three minutes remaining,” the game reminded the players.
As your body collapses on the floor in relief, all the people of the Beach rush to carry Momoka’s body to the Fire of Judgement.
Arisu and Usagi try to help you stand but you wave them off when they successfully make you sit. “No. No. Clear the game first.” You laughed in between coughs. “I need to catch a breath.”
Usagi tries to argue with you but you glare at her. “I’ll be out as soon as the phone dings,” you assure them.
“Can you walk?” Arisu asks as he looks at your leg.
You nod and roll your eyes. “I was a med student, Arisu. I can handle it.”
The pair looked at each other as if communicating with their eyes and then they nod, lifting each and limping out of the building to head over to the Fire of Judgement. You watch their retreating figures, relieved that the two are safe.
You look back down at your wounded thigh and laugh. You were probably overreacting a bit. It seems that your presumptions were correct. It didn’t hit anything bad and the bullet did enter you but exited you as well. But you do have to stop the bleeding as soon as possible.
Great, now you’re going to have ugly scars on your thigh. So it’s bye-bye bikinis?
You scoff and take off the white cover-up you had over yourself, leaving you in the two-piece black bikini you’ve been wearing since you arrived at the beach. You began to wrap it around your thigh skillfully just as you were taught. Blood began to seep through the cloth and you knew that soon enough, you have to replace it with a real bandage and sew the open wound.
The phone for the game dinged and you sigh in relief. They were able to burn Momoka’s body, after all.
Definitely not with ease, you were able to push yourself back up. If it wasn’t for your determination to keep your promise to Usagi and Arisu, you would’ve just laid there for a little longer.
So much for Utopia, you thought.
As you were about to exit the building, your feet stopped on their own accord when something crossed your mind, making the corner of your lips turn up into a smirk.
Tumblr media
You sat on the small round marble table with your legs dangling and fingers playing with the ten of hearts card. Flames are eating up the building around you but you know you don’t have to be around here any longer. As if on cue, you see the familiar white jacket from your peripheral, bringing a sad smile to your face.
“I saved it for you, Chishiya.”
There was no greeting needed. You turn your head to your right and give him a happier, faker smile. His eyes stray down to your injured thigh for a second but back to your face in no time. He approaches you with no caution and no clue of emotion on his face.
You don’t doubt he saw the whole ordeal back there. He probably saw you and your friends struggle as he sat back and watched the scene unfold like a movie. He watched you almost die. It was so like him, quiet and scheming as he does whatever is best for him.
Now, he was here to steal the last remaining card too.
“It’s no longer Shuntarou, huh?”
He doesn’t receive any answer from you but he knows the answer why. You were still mad at him. How could you not? He practically sent your comrades to their deathbeds if it wasn’t for the unexpected game venue.
“To be honest, I don’t think it’s even important if we collect all the cards,” you confessed as you stare at the single card in your hand, flipping to its front and back. You finally turn your whole body to face him, stretching your arm to offer the card to him. “But here, just so you have it all.”
He raises a brow, staring at you with a smirk. Goddamn, is he attractive. It’s so unfair.
His mouth opens, about to say something but another person walks in. He realizes this when your eyes stray from his and shift to the tall woman in a blue swimsuit. You smile at her, uncaring of the interruption.
“You two are quite persistent, aren’t you?” Kuina asks with a smirk. Chishiya turns to look at her for a second before facing you again.
She nods over to your still wrapped-up thigh. “That was cool–what you did to Niragi. Where did you learn that?”
“It was just luck,” you tell her, earning a scoff from the man in front of you.
He takes the card from your hand. “Don’t believe her. She’s a spades player and was an athlete.”
Among other things, sports were one of the few things you had to give up on when you were forced to pursue medicine. But you never told Chishiya that you would still make time to compete in underground fights. It was the only way you could keep doing it with your parents not knowing. So yes, you were a retired mixed martial arts athlete that eventually became skilled in street fights.
Chishiya knew, of course. You would disappear and not bother him for weeks, healing any injuries that you incurred during the fights. Most of the time, you’ll be gone for a week. Until, there was one time in particular when you had not bothered him for almost two weeks and even canceled the date you were so excited to be on. Curiosity got the best of him, leading him to your apartment where he found you tending to your wounds alone. It was when you finally told him what you have been doing.
“So this is what you have been up to.”
Chishiya was leaning against the doorway with an unamused face, holding a flier of the underground fight in his hand.
You had been applying ointment on your wounds. The fight was worse than usual and your opponent decided to destroy your face. Of course, you won because you were so pissed off that you were going to have to cancel a date with Chishiya so he wouldn’t notice the black eye and your wounded nose.
You drop the cotton bud with wide eyes and a gasp, scrambling to hide your face in your hands.
It was kind of funny—you in your underwear, exposing all the healing bruises all over your body and face. Chishiya doesn’t react seeing you almost naked. It was like the nonchalant man doesn’t see you as a woman.
You lower your hands from your eyes so you could see him but still enough to cover your face from the eyes down. “Are you going to tell dad?” you ask like a kid being caught shattering a vase.
He sighs, walking over to your bed and sitting down with his hands inside his jacket’s pocket. “What would I gain from that?” It was rhetorical. You know he’ll gain nothing from saying anything. Instead, you know he’d rather keep his mouth shut and use it against you.
In front of the mirror, you watch his reflection fixate on your body’s bruises. Suddenly feeling a bit insecure, you purse your bruised lips and head over to your closet to grab a silk robe to wrap around your half-naked self.
“Why are you here, Shuntarou?” you ask with folded arms.
He shrugs and looks away from you. “‘Was curious.”
Silence filled your room, only the ticking of your wall clock being heard. You sigh. “I won’t stop doing it,” you tell him firmly.
“I know,” he responds as if he expected you to say that. “But tell me, how long do you plan to keep on doing this?” He raises the flier in his hand again as if mocking you with it.
You understand. You used to fight in arenas with media, judges, journalists, and opponents who are trained the same way as you. Underground fighting—it was different. It’s illegal, messier, and deadlier. Often, there are no rules. It’s quite literally beat your opponent to death or be beaten to death. Sometimes, weapons are even snuck in and nobody cares if it’s against the rules.
It was dangerous for you but more dangerous for your family name.
But you couldn’t help it, the rush it gives you—it made you feel alive more than championships ever did.
To hide the bruises from your father, you would over-accessorize and constantly shop for new clothes. During the day, you were the rich and elegant daughter he wanted. But at night, you were a fighter under a different name and a mask.
When you don’t answer, Chishiya dismisses the question and looks over the medicine you got for yourself on your vanity table. “There’s better ointment than that.”
You roll your eyes. Of course, he has to be smarter about that. “It’s the only brand the nearest drugstore had.”
Then you grin, a thought coming into your mind. “Maybe you can help me apply it?”
“No,” he stands up from your bed. “I’m leaving.”
But he didn’t and he spent the night treating your wounds like a doctor should.
“Well, I have to go back to my friends,” you brought yourself to your feet, a hand hovering over your injured thigh. Kuina reached over to help you but you rejected her attempt with a smile. There’s a struggle but you were able to walk away from them even with the pain.
You would kill for crutches right now.
“Wait!” Kuina stops you. You turn around, confused as she approaches you. She removes the sword sheath from her shoulder and hands it over to you. You quickly recognize this as The Last Boss’, the militant always around Niragi, sword. “You can use this to steady yourself.”
You smile and take it from her. “Thank you,” you accept it with genuine gratitude, looking over to Chishiya who was watching the exchange quietly on the side.
“I’ll see you around, Kuina.”
Tumblr media
Arisu, Usagi, and you found a place to stay along with the others from the Beach. There, you tended to your wounds and recovered. There were no games. Those whose visas were about to expire tried to go to previous game venues but nothing happened.
It’s as if Borderlands completely stopped.
Some assume that the games are over since all the numbered cards were completed but you know that’s hardly the case. This is the silence before the storm—a grace period if you will.
“Where’s Usagi?” you ask Arisu when you wake up and the pretty climber was nowhere to be found. He was looking better and his injuries were mostly healed.
“She went and looked for supplies with the others,” he answered with a yawn.
Even if the three of you only spent a few days at the Beach, everyone began to miss the luxury of hotel beds, warm breakfast, hot showers, and electricity. Following the ten of hearts game, the survivors camped together. Eventually, it began to be suffocating as the same people reminded them of the Witch Hunt massacre. Most militants were eaten by their guilt and left, while those who had their comrades killed by militants still felt disgusted by them and chose to separate from the group. Wounds heal but they can’t be rushed.
The three of you stayed with Ann and Tatta, hopping from one place to another for a few nights.
Last night, you stayed at a small house with two bedrooms which were occupied by the girls and boys each. It didn’t have much supply hence why Usagi must’ve gone with Tatta and Ann.
You were pretty much useless because of your injury and one of your three companions always had to stay with you even if you try to assure them you’ll be fine. It was mostly Arisu who was being overprotective. You had a hunch that it was mostly because it was a leg injury. It must’ve hit close to home, you think.
Nevertheless, you were thankful for their care. Plus, it was a good thing that the games have somehow stopped for a while because you surely wouldn’t have survived with a leg you could barely walk on. The bullet missed your muscle or any artery, what it hit was mostly fat.
You raised your leg on the coffee table while you sat on the couch. You could walk better now and maybe even run. You haven’t pushed it though, opting to do exercises that would help you recover faster. You were a spades player, after all. It wouldn’t do you any good when the games finally start.
“It’s a good thing you were in med school,” Arisu points to your leg. You gave him a wide grin, taking in the compliment.
“What a shame it was so boring,” you say.
Arisu smiles, handing you the cup of instant ramen. You thanked him quietly and began to eat. He sits down beside you and eats his cup too. For a minute, the only thing that could be heard in the living room was the sound of your slurps and chewing.
“So,” Arisu started, “I’m sorry about Chishiya.”
You shrug, trying not to show how the C-word affects you. “I’m sorry too. Y’know, because he basically tried to kill you and Usagi. I know that you mostly trusted him because of my feelings for him.”
“That’s what I’m sorry for,” he explains, “I didn’t think he’d betray you too. I thought he really cared for you. Especially when he said those things about you.”
His words make you pause from your meal, looking at the shaggy-haired boy in curiosity and confusion. “What things?” you ask and begin to chew again, this time slowly, waiting for your friend’s answer.
“He told me we shouldn’t include you in our plans because…” He set down his cup on his lap and chewed away the fullness of his mouth before continuing. “Because he doesn’t want you in any danger. He said ‘I’m sure you understand. If you were in my place, you wouldn’t want the only person you like in this life to be in any danger.’”
Your breath catches in your throat. You know it wasn’t real. But to hear that Chishiya Shuntarou said those words about you even if they were lies? You wish you would’ve heard it yourself. In fact, you would give an arm and a leg for him to say that to you.
Arisu sighed, slumping his back on the couch. “He said it was still my choice if I’ll ask you and it was just his simple request. I was an idiot. I didn’t know he was doing it because he knows you’ll figure out his real plans if you knew our plan.”
You stayed silent for a few seconds and then replied in a low voice. “You’re not an idiot.” A frown paints on your face. “He’s a manipulative motherfucker, that’s what he is.”
“What made you like him so much, then?” Arisu lets his curiosity free with the question.
His question was valid. It’s no doubt that the asshole was attractive and cool. These are traits he had in common with millions of men in the world so why Chishiya of all people? Is it because you had no option? But you do. In fact, you hated the idea of your parents saying you’ll marry one of their friends’ sons.
But heck, do your parents know you. They’re clever, you’ll admit. They really got you where they wanted you.
“I’m sorry, I’m late!”
The door opens with a loud thud, revealing you with your hands on your knees, in your messily worn high school uniform, and catching your breath from the running. You came from morning training for the Karate team but lost track of time. All your classmates had their eyes on you, some snickering and laughing at you.
“Miss L/N, that’s the third time this month,” your teacher deadpans while still writing on the board.
“I know, sir! I’ll try my very very very best not to do it again this month, sir!” You shout, grinning from ear to ear as you stand up straight with your left arm on your sides and your other hand in a salute. Your teacher sighs, muttering “this month” and shaking his head, making the class laugh.
“Just get back to your seat, L/N,” he replies in defeat.
“Yes, sir!” you agree and set down your salute back into a military stance. Your class laughs once again and you laugh along with them. You head to your seat at the back of the class, a few of your classmates giving you a high-five greeting as you pass by them.
Your steps halt when you notice you finally have a seatmate. He had mid-length blonde hair, half of it tied up with a few strands on the sides of his face. He wasn’t even looking at you, focusing on the writing on the blackboard instead. The stranger intrigued you so you raise a brow and look at your side where your nearest classmate sat.
“The new student,” he whispers. “His name is Chishiya Shuntarou.”
You smirk, thanking your classmate and heading over to your designated seat. You set down your backpack on the floor and sat down, facing the new student who was still not acknowledging you with his stare.
“Hi. I’m Y/N L/N,” you introduce yourself and hold out your hand. “Let’s be friends, yeah?”
The stranger stops writing his notes and finally looks at you straight in the face and then back to your hand.
He just ignores you and continues writing his notes again.
You stare at him dumbfounded with your held-out hand, frozen and in disbelief. ‘What an asshole,’ you think. You shrug anyway and retract your hand, sitting properly to face the board.
“Chishiya, right?” you start a conversation even if you sense that he won’t bother answering. “Why would you transfer in the middle of the semester?” You were bringing out your notebook when a thought passed by you.
Then it clicks. “Chishiya, that sounds familiar.” You say to yourself particularly when you flip open the pages of your notebook to a blank page.
“Idiot.” It was him mumbling but you hear it all too well.
Your mouth drops at his voice and it finally hits you. It was him. Chishiya Shuntarou, son of most of your hospitals’ directors. You see him during events your parents drag you to ever since you were children. He was always reserved and quiet but you always admired him, even harboring a little crush on him. You’ve been so deep into your sports for years that you actually forgot what your life was like before you found something that really excited you.
A smile unconsciously spreads on your face in recalling the memory.
“Shuntarou,” you pause. “He grounds me down.”
Do you think Chishiya was a good person? Definitely not. You weren’t perfect, either. People are neither good nor bad. There’s no such simple person as that. Chishiya is a troubled person. He’s struggling with how to connect with himself and others. This is something you find in common with him.
When you are in trouble, Chishiya always finds a way to be there for you in his own way. You used to think that he cares about you and you liked to think that way still. But for now, you two have different priorities. You are at war.
And no one comes out the same person they were before the battle started.
Tumblr media
“You sure about this, Y/N?”
Usagi was asking you for the nth time. You nod. “I’m all healed,” you reply. That was partly true. You’re sure you can run now but there’s still a limit to what you can do specifically in terms of fighting. But you were stubborn enough not to leave Arisu and Usagi to investigate the Minami-Aoyama station alone.
The three of you traced the steps of Asahi and Momoka from the video that Arisu found on the phone she left behind. You walked in the dark train tracks just like they did until you found a door.
It was opened so Arisu cautiously heads in while the two of you trail behind him, ready for any attack to come but there was nothing. You continued to walk the empty hallway, searching for the place in the video.
Arisu halts his step and you realize you were here. The three of you entered the dark room, Arisu pointing his flashlights around it.
The lively room filled with monitors and people cheering in the video was now a dark lifeless room with multiple dead people slumped over monitors and evidence of being shot by a laser. They seemed to be players in Borderland too but unlike you, they were well-groomed and well-fed.
“Holy shit,” you mumbled.
“You actually found this place.”
A voice startles the three of you and Arisu immediately points the flashlight in the direction of the voice. From another entrance of the room, Chishiya and Kuina strut in. You put on your guard. Why was he here? Are they one of the dealers? It’s unlikely the case but why?
“As expected from someone I have high hopes for,” the blonde continued.
“We meet again,” Kuina speaks.
Usagi doesn’t hide the disgust in her tone and countenance. “It’s you,” she says with furrowed brows, no doubt still mad over the pair’s betrayal. Kuina looks away in slight guilt, looking over at Chishiya.
You follow her gaze and notice he no longer wears the jacket you gave him. Instead, he wore a blue and white gradient cardigan over his shirt. You feel a tad of disappointment in your heart at the thought that he has thrown it away or lost it.
“Thanks to you, I have all the numbered playing cards with me.” He held up the deck of cards as he says it, a condescending smirk painted on his face. He truly is a despicable human being.
Arisu glares at him and flatly asks, “How did you find this place?”
Chishiya brings out a small folded piece of paper and unfolds it to show you its contents. “It took me a while to realize that this is actually the route map of a subway station.” From afar, the drawing really did look like random scribbles. It’s a good thing that the man is observant. You don’t know where he got it but Arisu may have had a clue as you see the expression on his face. They have both participated in a game, after all.
“What happens when we collect all the cards?” He saunters closer to you with his hands in his pockets. “I thought I’d find the answer if I come here.” His eyes explore the room. “But there’s only one thing I discovered.”
“They’re not game masters,” Arisu cuts him off, finishing his sentence.
“Right,” Chishiya agrees. “Judging from the fact that they were all killed after our victory. They’re humans like us and on top of that, there’s someone above them.”
You scoff. “What? Like a God?”
“Just who could they be?” Usagi asks no one in particular as she looks at Chishiya.
“Who knows? They might be aliens,” he pauses and shifts his eyes to you with a smug and mocking face, “or as your friend said, even God himself.” It was the first time he acknowledged you in the room. You raise a brow, slightly offended. His bitter tone doesn’t pass by you and the fact that he called you ‘your friend’ instead of your name, vexed you.
Not that you planned to give him a reaction but if you did, you wouldn’t be given the chance because the lights of the room turned on, followed by the wall of multiple television and computer screens circling the room accompanied by heightened ceremonial music.
The screens reveal a familiar face—the executive specializing in the hearts game, Mira, sitting on a chair in a black gown. A vicious smile is plastered on her face. It sets an eerie feeling in your heart. What kind of fucked up shit is happening here?
“Congratulations to all players,” her voice sent chills down your spine. “With the exception of the face card games, all of you have cleared all thus far and emerged as victors by sacrificing numerous lives.”
Her head tilts to the side, feigning innocence and wonder. “I wonder how many of your comrades have died?”
She stands up, raising an arm. “Try to remember those that were shot dead with a gun.” She walks around as the screen shows recorded videos of the games. “That girl that you burned alive, those struck with the lasers, those that drowned, those whose heads were blown off, those comrades of yours.” You feel Arisu flinch beside you at the mention of the last sentence.
“The despair you’ve felt so far and those dying moments that you can never forget.”
One particular screen catches your eye but not because of a man’s head being blown off. It was because standing near that man was a familiar shaggy-haired boy. Your gaze flits to the man’s face beside you and you see the flash of horror in his eyes as the screams of people from the games fill your ears.
“I’m extremely touched!” Mira exclaims. “All of you players, we would like to give you a present.” Her movements were odd as if she was really excited about this. One thing’s for sure, whatever’s Mira’s role is in this world, she isn’t being forced to do it.
“Are you returning us to the original world?” Kuina thinks out loud. You purse your lips, doubting that that’s the case.
Mira gasps, eyes widening as her body shakes in excitement. “There will be new games!” She exclaims happily like the words don’t mean death and destruction on a whole new level. “Let’s play games together. You’ll fight for face cards.”
“Wow,” you react with a flat tone. “She’s fucked in the head.”
There’s disbelief in Kuina’s voice when she asks, “New games?”
“I don’t dislike the idea,” Chishiya says, the smirk not being wiped off his face. Your fists clench at his words. You don’t understand him. How could he like these games? Death, betrayal, being played around like lab rats—were those entertaining to him? You always thought Chishiya was a little bit different than most and he was just doing his most to survive but is this a side to him that you’ve blinded yourself to?
“We’ve still got many more wonderful games prepared for all of you, so look forward to it!” Mira ends her ridiculous speech.
“This woman…” Usagi finally speaks.”Is she the game master?”
“I’d rather see an alien appear on the screen.” Kuina thinks out loud.
“The next stage will commence tomorrow at noon,” the camera zooms in on Mira’s face. “Let’s have some fun together!”
“So we have to fight again,” Usagi says, feeling defeated.
“Yes,” Arisu replies. “But something is different... we’re finally seeing our target.” He says with his eyes focused on Mira, glaring and determined.

“You’re mad again,” Chishiya states the obvious in the dark of the room you’ve entered.
You slam yourself on the nearest display bed, looking around the furniture store you’ve sheltered in from the King of Spades. By not answering Chishiya, you clearly agree with his suspicion. Of course, you were pissed off. If he ran with urgency as a normal person does, maybe you would’ve been able to jump inside that car with your friends.
“It’s not like we would’ve fit. I’m sure you’ll find them again,” he assures you, unconvincingly with a bitter tone in his voice.
He looks at the sky through the glass window of the store. “The blimp is gone,” he observes out loud. “We can rest here if you want and then we can go.”
“If his whole Arena is Tokyo, then that means we have no choice but to join the other games,” you think out loud. There are 12 face cards, meaning there’d be 11 games out there and one game where a single overpowered man aims to shoot down every player out here. Even if you were a spades player, your combat skills, no matter how great, are no match with his unending ammo. You can’t exactly kick or punch those bullets away.
“That’s the point,” he replies flatly.
You glare at him, scoffing and lying down on the bed fully with your head resting on your arm. “You should get me food,” you tell him and ignore his sarcastic remark. You don’t really expect him to comply, you were just doing it to get on his nerves like usual.
“Do it yourself,” he says with a sigh.
“As you can see, I’m injured…” You point to your thigh wound that was still wrapped and can be seen clearly from the ends of your gym shorts. Obviously, that was a lie and you can move freely now. “And hungry.”
He scoffs, sitting on the mattress next to you. Deafening silence began to fill the room and you almost forget that Chishiya is in the same room as you. His presence begins to make you uncomfortable, not because you hated him but because you don’t like him seeing you vulnerable. So, you turn to your side with your back facing him.
The king of spades, he just destroyed everyone out there. These next games, they’re much crueler than the numbered ones. You barely made it out alive and now you have to participate in harder games? And when they’re all over, who’s to say that you could actually go back?
Do you even want to go back?
If you were to die here, it wouldn’t be much loss to the real world, anyway. Things haven’t changed despite the circumstances—your priority was still to get Chishiya out of here if he can. You’re sure you will see Usagi and Arisu again. They’ll be fine. They even got Kuina, Ann, and Tatta by their side. Maybe you were separated from them so you can protect Chishiya somehow.
You don’t doubt that he’d want to join the diamond games. In fact, maybe he’s even excited about it. If it came down to you joining him in one, you’ll try your best to help him win. But if you two somehow find yourself in a game where he will need your strength, you’d be glad to be there with him.
The thing is, you know you would sacrifice yourself for him but the question is, would he willingly sacrifice you to win?
As you drown in your thoughts, your body shuts down to sleep, suddenly exhausted from all the running.
The dress you wore flowed freely, the ends dragging on the floor. Even if you find yourself more at home with gym clothes, dressing up did excite you too. It just wasn’t as convenient as gym clothes where you can move freely.
Tonight, you were ecstatic as the lavender gown you had a famous designer made sculpted your upper body perfectly as you fit it the night before the dance. Giggling, you think back to the blonde’s acceptance of your invitation to the school event.
“So, Shuntarou, have you asked someone to the dance yet? or maybe been asked by someone?” you ask as you sat beside him in the classroom during break time.
“If you wouldn’t glare at any girl that would approach me, maybe someone would’ve.” He replies in a monotone voice as he eats his cookies. It was his favorite brand.
“I do not glare,” you reply, glaring. “And if you want to go with someone, just tell me who and I’ll help you.”
He raises a brow, finally looking at you but with full judgment. He knows you’re bluffing. “At least try.”
You lose your facade. “Ok, then. Will you go with me to the dance?”
“I don’t really have a choice, do I?” he replies, dull as always.
You skip around your room, heart fluttering at the thought of slow dancing with the nonchalant blonde boy. You imagine the jealous stares of the girls who have a crush on him. You couldn’t help it. You were in high school and in love.
Afraid to accidentally damage the dress in any way, you remove it and keep it in a safe place. Tomorrow, you’ll have a team to help you get ready. Then, Chishiya will fetch you and you will go to the dance together.
In your excitement, you forgot to drink water or even eat dinner. You were only reminded when you feel your throat get parched. With that realization, you head to the kitchen to get something to eat.
As you were munching on some leftover pasta you found, you hear your father’s voice in the living room. Since when was he home? You become more cautious of your actions, careful not to make any noise as you eat. It’s better to not encounter him at all.
“Ah, he’s taking her to some school dance? That’s good.” School dance? What is he talking about?
Due to curiosity, you leave your food and tiptoe closer to eavesdrop on the conversation. It seems that he’s on the phone.
“She’s still a kid, wasting her time on stupid matters. It’s good that Shuntarou is already thinking about a future in medicine.” Shuntarou? You now realize that he’s talking to Shuntarou’s dad and with the tone of his voice at the mention of ‘her,’ it’s safe to assume that he’s talking about you. Your father hated the numerous extracurriculars you were doing, especially those of sports. He always believed they were a waste of time and that if you wanted to do extracurriculars, you should’ve just joined the student council.
“They’ve been getting along well, I’ve heard. As soon as Shuntarou finishes his residency and gains a little experience, we can have them married,” your father speaks to his phone.
You froze at hearing the word ‘married.’ What did he mean by that? Could it be… Chishiya and you were being arranged to be married? And then it hit you. It’s all planned. The reason why Chishiya was transferred to your school in the middle of the semester after some unknown reason is because of your father. He was transferred there for you.
Your father says more to his friend on the phone. It was all about you and Chishiya and some for the hospital. From what you’ve gathered, it was so Chishiya can inherit the position of chairman.
You can practically hear your heart shatter as it sinks to the ground. At such a young age, your father doesn’t believe in you. It’s always been like this. He just believed from the get-go that you didn’t have it in you to win. You weren’t gifted like him.
Chishiya is the child he wants, not you.
“Tell Chishiya to keep up the good work. I’ll give him a reward for taking my daughter to the dance.”
And it seems that Chishiya knows all about it too.
Your eyes fluttered open, lids feeling a bit heavy because of the unexpected sleep. As you sat up, your throat immediately felt parched from thirst. You really needed water.
Looking around, you find no sign of your companion. You felt a funny feeling in your stomach, wondering where he had gone. Has he already gone and joined a game? It seemed like something he would do here in Borderland, leave you in the middle of nowhere alone and unguarded.
You were about to stand up to actually look for the blonde man when you noticed something new on the display side table of the bed you slept on. It was unopened canned food and a bottle of water. There was no note or anything but it could only be from the blonde-haired guy himself. Has he really gone out alone and looted food for you?
You decide to quench your thirst first before dealing with him, grabbing the plastic bottle in a swift motion and opening the cap hastily before drinking in chugs.
“Slow down.”
As if on cue, Chishiya enters the furniture shop, now in the white jacket you gave him. Where did he hide that? Did he go back to where he left it when you were asleep?
You brought the bottle from your lips, staring at him like a puzzle. “Where did you go?”
“Outside,” he answers flatly. You glare at him. “Just say thank you for the food and water.”
You don’t answer right away, watching silently as the man sits down again on the bed next to you, laying down some things he probably found around. It’s weird how it oddly felt domestic. If you were to disregard the numerous pieces of furniture around you, you could imagine yourself in a place in the real world where you two have your own home, happily married, and are in possession of what you two always wanted.
You shake off the thought. Not only is that impossible in Borderland, but it’s also impossible in the real world.
You open the canned food. It was mixed fruits. After you thanked him softly, you began to eat quietly, chewing slowly as he said to.
“Have you eaten?” you ask as he stares at you. He gives you a nod before taking his eyes off you and back to his tinkering.
“Are you joining a game soon?” you attempt a conversation again.
“I think we have to,” he answers.
He was right. “Yeah.” You bit your lip, afraid to ask what’s been lingering in your mind. “Do… do you want to join a game together?”
He stills, “no.”
“Why not? I’m strong. I can protect you,” you point at the sword you laid on the ground.
“That’s not enough,” Chishiya answers in a heartbeat.
“Would you rather I die alone?” It was a tough question. Not for him but for you. If you were going to be asked, you’d rather have your last moments with him.
He audibly tsks, standing up from the bed and putting his hands in his pockets. He walks away from you and the conversation. Disappointment creeps into your skin. You knew he wouldn’t care about your sentiments.
His hand stays on the door, not opening it yet. “Tomorrow,” he speaks, not even turning around to look at you. “We’ll join a game together.”
It sent a chill down your spine. You didn’t know what his motives are. Did he decide to go on a game with you because of what you asked… or did it give him an idea to finally end you?
Tumblr media
It’s a good thing that the next stage shows you what game you will be entering through the blimps. The game you enter varies on one’s strengths and risks. You know that you wouldn’t willingly enter a Hearts game with the people you care about and you would try to enter a game you specialize in.
“No heart games,” Chishiya tells you.
You’ve found yourself inside a small home to spend the night in. It was safer than the furniture store with glass windows. You thought it’d be nice to decide on what game to choose.
You felt the mattress dip beside you, indicating Chishiya sat down.
The house was small and cozy. It was a one-bedroom and looked like it belonged to a couple simply because it had everything by pair. What made you stay though, is that Chishiya has found their secret stash of food that was hidden inside the bedroom and under the floors of the closet.
The supply could last you maybe about a week.
You turn your head to Chishiya. It was already night time and you only had a candlelight lamp lighting up the room. He has taken off his jacket, leaving him in his shirt and pants.
It was not the first time you’d shared a bed. When your families would go on trips together, they’d make you share a room. If you didn’t know about your father’s plans, you would find it odd how they were too willing for you two to get along that they were putting their young adult child inside a bedroom with a guy her age.
During those trips, you would fall asleep on his bed while telling him stories. At first, Chishiya would leave you be and sleep on your bed. Until one night, when it became too frequent, he just slept beside you. And then the rest was history.
As he lies down beside you, you hear his gentle breathing, see the rise and fall of his chest, and the way he inhales and exhales. It seemed that he was in deep thought. Could it be that he was worried about the games too?
“How about a Diamonds game?” you suggest. You think that you were pretty smart and you could handle it more with him by your side.
Chishiya doesn’t answer, looking like he’s in deep thought.
“Kuina and the others probably joined a Clubs game.” you continue. “Maybe we should join one too.”
The thought brings you back to your comrades. It’s possible that they joined a game together—a Clubs game is the safest bet if they all want to live. Maybe it’s what you and Chishiya can do too.
“We’ll join the Queen of Clubs. It’s the nearest clubs game.” The man beside you finally speaks, his voice a little tired.
You agree, nodding lightly. You spun to your side with your back facing him as he lay on his back, staring up at the ceiling.
“Goodnight, Chishiya,” you mumble, still not being able to call him by his first name. He doesn’t answer but you hear him subtly hum in response.
Tumblr media
The sun was setting when you and Chishiya reach the arena.
After a bit of walking, your mouth drops as you realize that the Queen of Clubs blimp is hovering over a high school building. Specifically, the prestigious high school you and Chishiya attended.
“How fitting,” Chishiya reacts with a bored tone.
Sometimes, you feel like the games are catered to the players. Like they know all your life stories. This high school being the game arena, is it to your advantage or disadvantage? Whatever it is, you have no choice but to find out. This is your first game in the second stage, and it’s a Clubs game. If the two of you work with other players well, the chance of survival is high.
That should be the mindset for the numbered games but right now, you weren’t sure because these are face card games. If the numbered games were difficult as it is, you should be terrified and ready for the face cards.
“I can go in alone,” you suddenly say, afraid to go in there together with him.
“You’re kidding,” he scoffs and walks closer to the entrance. “After all that talk about dying alone?”
The anxiety that was creeping into your skin would put you at a disadvantage. You know that Chishiya could handle himself but you couldn’t help but be worried for him. Sighing, you shake off the worry and decide to push through with joining the game with him.
You enter the arena first and look back. Chishiya stares at you for a few seconds, as if contemplating or memorizing your face. And then he follows you inside. What was that?
The other players were gathered in front of the building, right on the grass field. There were about six people there already. Chishiya followed you inside but didn’t walk beside you or near you. It was probably to not make people assume you know each other. On top of a table were metal cuffs that had a screen, looking like a smartwatch. From the looks of it, it seems that it was the same material as the collars they make you wear in the other games only this time, they were bracelets.
1 PER PERSON
There were two left when Chishiya and you took yours. You clasp it around your non-dominant hand’s wrist and watch as the game confirms your registration. Looking around, you found the other players looking at you. It made you feel a bit insecure but you’ve been in enough games to know that you shouldn’t let them get to you. It should be the other way around.
Another hand reaches for a phone on the table and you look up at her. She looks a bit like a high schooler, wearing a skirt from a uniform and a white tank top. She had a bow and arrow on her back.
Her stare turns into a glare and you frown. It was she who broke eye contact first and stepped away from the table. As she turns around, it was hard not to notice that she was missing a foot, replaced with some kind of metal. She looks interesting to you.
REGISTRATION HAS CLOSED. THE GAME WILL NOW COMMENCE.
The familiar AI voice of a woman is heard through the campus speakers.
Chishiya crosses his arms, waiting for something to happen next. You look up at the screen that was stationed there. As if on cue, the screen lights up, flashing some kind of silhouette of a woman’s head with a crown.

GAME OVER
Players do not gather enough votes to dethrone the Queen of Clubs.
Players do not complete the last challenge.
TIME LIMIT
02:00:00 HRS
You scoff and remove the Katana from your shoulder, putting it on the table. The other players began to gather around it, putting their weapons with yours.
GAME START
You look around at the other players. You give them a nod.
“Alright. Let’s meet by the gym doors after we collect all points,” a man who has glasses said. He wore stripe shirts and was fairly tall. He seemed smart and gave the impression of a leader. It doesn’t look like he’s physically fit, though.
The other players do not waste time, scurrying into the building with determination and a little bit of fear. You stayed behind for a few seconds, looking at Chishiya. He stares back at you with no expression on his face and heads into the building.
There was the girl who had a bow and arrow, still looking at you. You give her a nod. It didn’t look like she could be trusted but this is a Clubs game, after all. You have to work together to survive. She doesn’t give you the same attitude as earlier. Instead, she approaches you, giving you a nod back.
“Akane Heiya,” she introduces herself to you.
“Y/N L/N,” you reply with your name.
The two of you enter the building together, cautious of the darkness that plagues it. You pick up the small flashlight from your belt bag. You can hear the scrambling of the foot of the other players, no doubt racing to get to the classrooms faster.  “The rules didn’t say how much we need, so maybe we can go and check the gym and see if there’s a clue?” you ask her.
“I’ll go check,” she tells you.
“You sure?” you ask her, wanting to know if she doesn’t need a companion.
She nods. “One of us should help collect votes.”
As soon as you nod, she was already on her way to look for the gym. You decide to head to the nearest classroom without a player in it already.
You stand before a classroom door that has a red light on it. You assume that if the votes in this classroom haven’t been collected, its red light is still on.
It wasn’t dark inside the classroom, the sun has almost set all the way but there was still a bit of light seeping through the windows of the room. As you step in, the door shuts behind you. You panic for a bit, checking the door knob if it still works. You groan when you realize that you’re shut in.
The lights of the classroom turned on and a tv screen that was in the middle of the chalkboard flashes a question.
In printing, it’s the color black. In chemistry, it’s potassium. In baseball, it’s a strikeout. Which letter is it?
It was an easy question but there were about maybe forty classrooms in this school. There are nine players. If your hunch was right, there should be a difficulty level or random variation of the difficulty of the challenges on each floor, there are eight classrooms. You were on the first floor.
“K,” you answer confidently.
The room speakers gave out a ‘ding’ sound and some kind of button on the teacher’s desk lights up a green color and you walk towards it. You hesitantly press it and your wrists light up with a green color.
+ 50 votes
You hear the lock of the door click open and you step out. You look up at the light on the door and see that the previous red light has been shut off.
Walking down the hallway, some girl who looked like she was in her thirties, wearing office attire approaches you. “How many votes did you get?” she asks, pointing at her wrist.
“50,” you reply.
Another man completes his room and hears what you were talking about, approaching you two.  “It was hidden in one of the lockers at the back. I got 50 too.”
You nod at them. “It seems that this floor is just full of 50 votes per room.”
Not wasting any more time, you and the others who have completed your rooms head to the second floor. Chishiya was already on the second floor, stepping outside one of the rooms. You approach him. “How many votes in this one?” you ask.
He shows his wrist, flashing the number on his band. 75. Just as you thought.
“So the floors are kind of the levels, huh?” The man in the striped shirt asks you. You nod.
“There isn’t a goal of votes by the gym.”
All of you turn your heads to the source of the voice. Heiya stood there, her chest heaving from the running. You don’t doubt that she was tired—the gym was a bit of a walk from the classrooms. You probably should’ve told her that.
“That must mean we should clear all the rooms.” A woman with a crossbody bag spoke up, joining all of you.
“Then let’s do that,” the man in the striped shirt speaks again.
You and the other players moved as quick as you can. You learned that when you don’t succeed with their mini games inside the classrooms, you’re lasered down and another player has to go to that classroom to finish the task.
In the end, it was six of you who lasted.
The first floor has eight rooms opened with 50 votes each. The second has eight rooms and 75 votes each. The third floor has three rooms with 100 votes each. The fourth floor has two rooms with 150 votes each. Lastly, the fifth floor had one room with 400 votes.
Together, you accumulated 2000 votes. However, it was separated from your wrists. When you reached the gym, whenever you tried, it would show ‘error’ on the electronic lock.
It had to be 2000 on one wrist.
“That means… only one of us gets to go inside?” A girl with a headband says, her eyes looking scared.
You furrow your brows, thinking. “The game said we only need to dethrone her with more votes. Only one needs to do her challenge and then the game should clear.”
“Right,” a man in a plain white shirt replies. “This is a Clubs game. That should be the case.”
“Okay, so who will go?” The woman in office attire asks, her voice trembling a bit.
Each one of you stares at each other, feeling each other out like teenagers afraid of a graded recitation in class. You don’t blame them, you don’t know what exactly the challenge would ask of you.
“I’ll go,” Heiya rolls her eyes impatiently, holding out her wrist as she waits for the other players to move.
“No. Most of the rooms’ challenges are about intellect. It should be me,” stripe shirt complained. Now you know what irks you about this man, he was controlling and stupidly wants to be seen as somewhat of a main character.
Heiya glares at him. “So what? You think you’re the smartest in the room?” She bites, raising her brows. You try your best not to laugh at her accusation and lightly strike your elbows to her side, telling her to tone it down.
“That’s not what I meant,” the man replies, offended and furrowing his brows.
“The challenge wouldn’t be about intelligence,” For the first time in the game, Chishiya finally speaks, making all the other players’ heads turn to him.
He shows everyone a piece of paper in his hands.
The Ivy Award 2020 — Yamada Asaki
No way, could it be?
“After the rooms were cleared per floor, the lights turned on but kept flickering. It made up a morse code. The first floor is I, the second floor is V, and the third floor is Y.” He makes his way near the circle, showing everyone the paper that turned out to be a certificate. “And then I found this on the fourth floor, confirming the morse code.”
“What is this supposed to be?” The man in stripe asks, a bit irritated.
Chishiya stares at him, giving him all his focus with dark eyes. “In the classrooms of the fifth floor, there were shelves containing the awards of this awardee. The Ivy Award was a special award this high school gave to those who excelled in all athletics in the school while maintaining top grades.”
Chishiya pauses, now shifting his eyes to yours. You look away and avoid his gaze. “There are only two people who received that award in this school.”
“Yamada Asaki,” he looks down at the paper in his hand. “And Y/N L/N.” His gaze goes back to you, communicating a million words in one simple stare.
You froze at the mention of your name. Heiya, in her tall stature, looks down at you. “You?” she asks in disbelief and a smirk.
You glare at Chishiya, not understanding why he dropped your name and history out of nowhere. Then you look at Heiya who was waiting for your response.
“That’s true,” you admit, looking down at your feet.
“In fact, she was the first awardee—the reason why the award was made in the first place.” Chishiya gives you a smirk.
You still remember when you were awarded that day. The school made the award for you for the sole reason that universities around the world were contacting them to take you in as their athlete on full scholarship. They were scrambling for your hand in college.
Your father rejected all of them. He used all his power to stop you from going.
Up till now, the award was a topic you don’t like talking about. It was hard for you to remember how much you were controlled and manipulated into staying in Japan.
“The person you’ll be facing,” He puts his eyes back on the man in the striped shirt. “Is a master of all sports and martial arts. Do you think you could handle that?”
The man in the striped shirt couldn’t answer.
Just like that, the other players began giving you their votes. You stand there quietly as they hover their cuffs on yours. This would mean… everyone’s life here is depending on you.
Chishiya took the last turn in giving you his votes. He grabs your limp wrist with his right hand and hovers his cuff on yours. Your eyes are shaking in anxiety as you’re still staring at the floor. You've fought wildly when only your life is in your hands. That’s because you know that you have nothing to lose. You’ll gladly die if it’s your time to die. But right now, you have to live for these people.
“What?” he whispers.
You finally look up into his eyes, meeting his deep stare.
The other players watch as Chishiya leans in, whispering something in your ear. This causes you to freeze, looking up at him with awe.
He spins you around, making you face the door. His hands are still on your shoulder when he leans in.
He whispers in your ear again, sending shivers down your spine. For some reason, it sounded genuine. He wasn’t trying to manipulate you into going. He was motivating you, maybe even pleading.
You turn your head to look at him, his face inches away from yours. From here, his eyes burned with something you don’t understand. There was a slight crease on his forehead that relaxed when you gave him a smile.
“Wait for me, will you, Shuntarou?”
It was the first time you saw Chishiya smile in Borderland—and actually smile and not smirk in a condescending manner.
“You can do it,” Akane nods at you, her arms crossed. You look at her, smirking. You’ve only known the girl for an hour but you already like her.
The other players began motivating you and you gave them all a glance before hovering your cuff on the lock of the door.
The lock dings and the door unlocks by itself. You twist the knob open, revealing the darkness of the room.
You give one last glance to Chishiya whose eyes never left yours. You walk inside, your eyes never leaving his. He has long abandoned the smile on his face, replacing it with his famous poker face. His eyes, however, stayed expressive as if telling you’ll be fine in his own way.
The night should’ve been everything you dreamed about.
Chishiya fetched you, wearing his suit and tie that matched your dress. The hotel venue that the school rented turned out to be designed beautifully. Everything was perfect.
If it weren’t for what you learned last night.
You acted like everything is fine, dancing with your friends as Chishiya sat on the side. To get him to come, he made a deal that he wouldn’t dance until the last. You agreed, only wanting to dance the last slow dance with him.
Chishiya must’ve already realized something is wrong because you haven’t looked at him for more than five seconds all night. It was weird. You really wanted to be here with him yet you can’t even ask him what he thought about the food. You know that it wasn’t his fault. You were the one who approached him first and began pursuing him. He wasn’t exactly actively trying to manipulate you as your father wanted.
But he knew. He knew what your parents wanted.
And you, you were left in the dark again.
The doors of the gym shut with a loud thud, leaving you in blinding darkness.
“I hoped you would come,” it was a girl’s voice from the end of the room.
The lights turn on and you squint your eyes as the sudden change blinds you for a second. When your eyes adjust to the brightness, you see a girl not older than a high school kid. She was wearing a black bodysuit and a crown, sitting on what looks to be like a throne on the stage.
“You’re Yamada Asaki?” you ask, raising a brow.
“and you’re Y/N L/N,” she replies, a smirk plastered on her face.
She stands from her throne, crossing her arms as she walks down the stage. “You know, when I heard that you’re here, I had this game designed just for you.”
“Designed?” your eyes never leave her as you frown. These games are designed by people?
You were curious but she ignores your question. “I wanted to see what’s so great about you.” The bitter tone of her voice doesn’t pass by you. It was clear that this girl doesn’t like you.
“Do you…” Her voice was deadly like it could cut like a sharp knife. Her eyes were focused on you like a target. “Do you know how miserable you made me feel?”
“Obviously not,” you replied with sarcasm, not giving into her sentiments. It would be better not to waste time, you only had 10 minutes left to clear the game.
The girl audibly scoffs so you continue. “I don’t know the reason nor do I care. Tell me the challenge and we can get this over with.”
Asaki’s gaze burn through yours as she removes the crown on her head and throws it on the ground. “The crown is worth 50 votes,” she says, eyes not leaving yours and showing you the cuff on her wrist, 2020 votes, the year she won her award. “You get it if you beat me in a fight.” She puts herself into a stance, getting ready to fight.
“Fine,” you answer, throwing your belt bag across the floor and cracking a few bones of your knuckles. “Are there any rules?”
It’s all bullshit. You know there are no rules in a fight for your life. This is a fight. But still, you ask. It wouldn’t hurt to know if there are.
You read her stance. She’s good, guarded and ready. From her built, it’s clear that she’s experienced. She must be an athlete from her younger years like you. It’s a no brainer, if she’s a receiver of the Ivy Award, then she has been trained like you.
“Rules? There are no rules. No stopping until one of us dies.” Her arrogance was something you take note of. It seems that her confidence is one of her biggest traits. For now, you need to see what she can do.
She attacks first, swinging a fist at your face. You block it and attack with a fist, to which she follows up with a guarding technique of her arms. You move away but she follows that technique with a kick. You dodge her foot by crouching, all while staring at her with burning eyes.
Kickboxing.
It’s the closest to modern-day MMA. From what you saw, this girl is a striker.
You launch forward, heading for her middle. It was fast but she was able to raise her knee which you avoid. Good. She’s good. But what about her footwork?
Pivoting your front foot, you shot your rear leg out and aim at her middle again. She quickly steps away, leaving your foot hitting nothing but the air. Great. Her footwork is good too. You jump back to your feet, raising your fists and moving away from her in a quick motion.
“Taekwondo?” She smirks, her eyes giving you a condescending look as if she’s about to laugh. “It was your favorite, wasn’t it?”
How did she know that? This girl… just who was she and what have you done for her to know you like this?
“So you’ve studied me?” you ask with a smirk, feigning your curiosity.
“Day and night,” she replies. “I watched all your tournaments,” she jabs, you avoid. “Your championships,” she kicks, you block. “Your training,” she swings, you move away. “All because they wanted me to be like you!” She lunges forward and you let her, she grasps the back of your head and gives you a knee strike, hitting you right in the stomach.
You free yourself from her hold, stumbling and landing a few steps from her when she lets go. She laughs like a maniac.
“You’ve become rusty,” she spats.
“Come on,” you raise your fists into a stance once again. “I haven’t even started,” you say and give her a grin.
Her forehead creases as she furrowed her brows, eyes blazing. So her favorite’s kickboxing. You know what to do. Her footwork’s great, her kicks and punches are strong too, it would be dangerous if she attacks you like she did last time. Front kicks are one of their best attacks.
You attack diagonally, catching her off guard. You throw a punch and it lands straight to her face. A kickboxers’ weakness is defending an attack coming diagonally. You have to get close to her.
You attempt to throw punches hastily, making her dodge away again and again until you corner her to a wall. She takes this as a chance to hold the back of your neck again with both hands, catching you in a Thai Clinch. Just like before, you know she’d throw you a knee strike.
Before she could raise her knee, you put both her arms in your hold tightly, preventing her to move. Using your elbow, you give her a strike to her jaw with the single intent to create the worst damage possible. Your jab connected with a crack and you know you broke her jaw. Once the move made her lose focus, you repeatedly take a jab at her, one punch after another.
Blood sputters out of her mouth and she spits as you move away again. You were pretty sure you saw a tooth fall out.
“Forfeit,” you order and her bloodshot eyes gave nothing to you but hatred. You match her threatening gaze. “Before I kill you.”
“Are you kidding?” There’s blood in the corners of her mouth from your punches yet she stands strong.
“Seven years,” she looks up to the ceiling, tears lining up her eyes. “For seven fucking years, I was told that I should be like you.” You’ve known since she greeted you that there’s something that lies here deeper. But who cares? So she’s been forced to work hard for the award, how is that your fault?
“And you failed,” you bluntly state, eyes devoid of emotion.
Her eyes widened in disbelief of your words. She scoffs, tears threatening to spill as she glares at you with resentment. “Failed? I won your award. I did it all!”
An ill feeling fills your stomach as she bares herself. She had become too emotional. One thing you learned about fighting is that your opponent doesn’t care. A real opponent goes straight for the kill. This… is nothing but a sparring session.
“So? After that, what did you do?” you ask, titling your head.
You rush forward, spinning around and straightening your legs to kick her head mid-air. Asaki was pulled of her feet violently and thrown across the floor. She slides along the gym floor, halting just a few inches away from the wall.
“Stand up and tell me,” you instruct her as you land. You wait for her to recover, her forehead bleeding from the impact of your kick.
Rage colored Asaki’s vision red as she uses her arms to push herself back up. “I…” It was a weak attempt, she couldn’t even sputter out the words. Her chest heaves up and down as she stands to her feet, for a moment, you thought she was gonna puke but she recovers. “I died.”
She snarled and rushes towards you and you await her attack, ready to counter it. Mid-air she raises her fist and you raise your hand, catching her burning fists in yours. However, she uses this misdirect to knee the wound of your thigh. You grunt, taking in the pain and trying not to let it falter you.
“You haven’t…” you grit through your teeth and use your free hand in attempt to smash it to her face. Asaki manages to block this, locking your arm and jabbing your stomach repeatedly. Using her strong hold from locking you, you jump and use both of your free legs to kick a blow to her stomach, sending you both flying away from each other and hitting the floor.
You don’t waste any time, jumping to your feet and launching yourself to her body on the ground. You put her in a chokehold, jabbing at her face repeatedly as you sit on her stomach.  “Dying? That’s your reason?” You say to her ear. She spins, making you land on her back. You lock her with your legs, grabbing her hair to raise her head. “Give me something better.”
You free her from your hold, jumping away from her range.
When she fully stands up, you throw a kick as the same time as her. Her left leg hits your outer right thigh and you hit her inner right thigh. She staggers because of this and you use the opportunity to jab three heavy hits to her head. Right. Left. Right. Her head has been hit enough for it to be fatal and she falls to her back.
Cleverly, she uses her legs and feet to block your attacks. You push through, using your body weight to receive the attacks from her legs. She locks you in with her legs on either side of your torso. You let her. If you try to escape, she’ll just lock your head.
In the underground, you’ve fought men and women of different weights. It was often that you were underestimated because of your height and weight. So, you let them think you were weak. But what they don’t know is you got them right where you wanted them—close enough for you to kill.
You use both your hands to block hers, smashing her wrists on the floor. Then, you smash your head against hers. That doesn’t stop you. You use your elbows once again, landing one blow after another. You don’t stop even after you see her face covered in blood.
When her hands lay limp with no force, you take a hand off and use this to grip her neck.
She struggles to breathe from your hold but you don’t let her. If you were inside a stage, a referee would’ve stopped you by now. But that’s not the case for you. Not for a long time.
“Where did you go last night?”
Chishiya asks as soon as you sit down beside him in the room. You ignore him, pretending you don’t hear him because of your earphones. He’s talking about the last dance. When he wasn’t looking, you slipped away from the venue and escaped. You left your bag with him and he only noticed when he couldn’t find you in the crowd anymore. You couldn’t help it, you were overwhelmed by your father and Chishiya. Not only is he controlling your career but he’s controlling your relationships too?
You took a cab ride away from the hotel, still wearing your gown. You told the driver to just drive around and he did. In the ride, you spot a neon signage. It was a club you always see. It had an interesting name; Sarutahiko.
You’ve seen cars come and go there. What you’ve noticed is they all seemed to be very wealthy. You asked for the car to stop by near and without thinking, you made your way into the club, clutching a wealthy man’s arm and pretending to be his date.
That night, instead of being in Chishiya’s arms for the last dance, you won your first fight in the underground. The beloved dress you had made for thousands of dollars, they were ripped and worn when you came home, dirt and scratches running along your skin.
It was the first time you felt it—the euphoria.
When you fought with no rules and no holding back, nothing mattered. You weren’t the beloved athlete that has a bright future ahead of her as an heir of the L/N family. You were just Y/N, or as the underground calls you, 極真 王女 (Kyokushin Ojo; trans: Ultimate Truth Princess; “Kyokushin” is a type of Karate)
Like a princess, you entered the arena in your sparkling gown and destroyed your opponent in five minutes. It was then and there that you decided, you will no longer fight your father’s opposition to your sports. This will be your life and your death.
A life with Chishiya, it’ll be a privilege. You like him… and with his and your father’s deal, you’ll be able to live your other life in peace. Fine, you’ll play the part of the pretty spoiled princess.
Chishiya doesn’t press further but from your lack of luster in your eyes, he understood that something died inside you that day. From then on, you dropped all your sports and didn’t fight your father’s refusal to all the universities that wanted to scout you even if they offered medical studies in exchange for your athletic participation.
If there was one thing you regret, it was you and Chishiya never had your last dance.
You feel it again. The euphoria running through your veins. Don’t stop. Don’t stop. Even if you hear the taps, don’t stop.
Asaki gasps for air, her face reddening as her wide eyes scream for help. You don’t notice this, darkened eyes not even showing mercy or any emotion. You’ve been completely shut off and in auto pilot as you throw one punch and another.
Why should you? Your father never stopped.
“N-no!”
Asaki pushes you off with all her strength, sending off her body. You’re quickly on your feet again, ready to attack as your opponent catches her breath. Asaki sprang of her hands, throwing herself in to a spin that showed off a gymnast’ skill. Like a whirling tornado, she was too fast for you to block or counter-attack.
She doesn’t kick your head and instead kicks your side. You were thrown across the floor, skiddling and tumbling. A groan escapes your lips at the pain that shot through your ribs, adding to the pain of your thigh.. Yeah, your ribs are definitely cracked.
“You said you’ll protect me,” Chishiya whispers in a low voice, you were sure only you could hear it. You did say it back there in the furniture shop.
He spins you around, making you face the door. His hands are still on your shoulder when he leans in.
“Protect me,” he whispers in your ear, sending shivers down your spine. For some reason, it sounded genuine. He wasn’t trying to manipulate you into going. He was motivating you, maybe even pleading.
I’m sorry, Asaki.
You sprang to your feet, ignoring the screaming pain of your ribs. You face your opponent once again, the same distance from when you started. But this time, something was different. In your opponent’s hands, was a butterfly knife.
She was smirking at you like she finally got you. She’s an idiot.
“Fine,” you huff, giving her an equally sinister grin. “You studied all my moves in high school.” You put yourself in a fighting stance again. “I’ll give it to you. You’re a great fighter. You know all the moves, techniques, and all that shit.”
“You did all that research about me… yet you didn’t ask why I stopped?” You don’t even glance once at her weapon again. “Pathetic.”
She lunges with a scream, swinging the knife at you.
You stepped in, closing the gap between you and Asaki, dodging her weapon and striking her upper and lower arm. As your strike clashes with hers, the force makes her arm holding the weapon go limp. You grab her arm, twisting it until her hand is pointed towards the ceiling.
With Asaki’s chest unprotected, you pivot and strike her with your elbow and then your foot to her leg. She loses balance and you use this to take the weapon from her hand.
In a swift motion, you swing the weapon, slashing her across the face. Crimson red drips from her already blooded cheek, adding to the wound on her forehead. She puts a hand to her face, finally executing fright for the first time in the fight.
And then you understand.
The career she wanted instead of the Ivy Award—it was beauty.
Instead of the Ivy Award, she wanted to be prom queen. Life wasn’t for her but she was thrusted into it too. It was so simple and yet you were blinded by the game to notice. You understood. A slash to the face was hard to cover especially if it scars. You were very careful about your face when you fought in the underground.
You feel bad but who were you to be a saint?
You strike a blow to her stomach with your foot, sending her staggering a few steps back. Her focus is still on the wound on her face. She has completely dropped her guard and looked like a simple high school girl who was attacked out of nowhere.
“You were right,” you say as you throw the knife away. “Taekwondo was my favorite. I still use ITF from time to time.”
She was not even guarded yet you continue. One straight powerful jab to the center of her chest. She accepts the attack but doesn’t fall down, eyes widened and coughing at the force of the attack.
“The reason why I stopped competing… was because I found something better.”
Asaki backs away, feeling an unexplained fright. She knows something has shifted as you stride towards her with blazing eyes. Even your walk seemed powerful, exerting an aura of strength and power.
Kyokushin Karate… is the strongest martial art in the world.
Its sole goal is defeating its opponent. Different from Taekwondo at its very core, it’s focused on real fights. There’s no protective gear, just pure hand-to-hand combat.
Those who practice Kyokushin as a martial art, they’re unfamiliar with attacks aimed at the head. But not you. The only reason attacks aimed at the head are banned in Kyokushin Karate is because…
There were too many casualties.
You send a straight punch to Asaki’s face, her head receiving the full force impact of your fist.
You swing your right arm, hitting her across the jaw. Asaki tries to kick your side as a counter attack but you dodge.
If your right arm’s not enough, use your left.
You swing your left arm this time, hitting her cheek and you actually feel her teeth through your fist. Even as you hit her, Asaki uses her hand to slap you across the cheek. You’re thrown off, so you spin and kicked off your legs.
If your left arm isn't enough, use your legs.
The heel of your feet strikes the junction of her neck and shoulder, sending her kneeling on the floor with a loud thud.
You tackle her down like you did before, with your legs on either side of her torso, she could only watch as you repeat your move from before.
And if your legs don’t cut it, use your head.
You smash your head with hers with a loud thud and she goes into shock, eyes wide open as she could no longer move. Her body stills underneath you as she stares up at nothingness.
The spirit of Kyokushin Karate… is a person’s strong will that is never broken.
2 MINUTES LEFT
“That’s…” Her eyes remained unmoving. “Karate.”
Tired, you stand up as she still lays still on the ground, broken bones and wounded face.
“You’ve done well,” you mumble but you’re sure she can hear. You wipe the blood on her face but it does nothing but spread it. You see her face clearly even with the blood. She was pretty with an innocent face now that she’s put down her guard and hatred.  “You can rest now, beautiful.”
And finally, the tears spill out of her eyes and she cries. She cries and cries until they turn into sobs. She cried like the kid that she is, hungry for love—hungry for someone to listen to her. It was all too familiar. You know the feeling all too well.
Walking away from her cries, you pick up the plastic piece of crown. It was silver and had pink stones all around it.
Limping to the stage, you make your way to the prop throne. You sit down on it and groan at the feeling of resting your beat up body.
1 MINUTE
You place the crown on your head and place your bloodied fists on either sides of the arm rests. The cuff on your wrists flash with a sound and a green light.
+ 50 votes
It was followed by a ding and the girl’s automated voice.
CONGRATULATIONS
GAME CLEAR
And then you see it, the laser coming down from the sky and onto Asaki’s skull.
Tumblr media
Stepping out of the gym, you find the other players waiting for you silently. They seemed to be looking up at something so you follow their gaze.
There was a camera. All that happened back there, they saw it.
You stood there in silence, waiting for something to happen next. Their gaze falls on you with your burnt knuckles and the plastic crown on your head. These people, they looked at you with fright in their eyes. It was a familiar look—the audience’s disbelief when you don’t hold yourself back.
“Great job,” Heiya was the first one to approach you with a smirk, putting a hand on your shoulder. It was her and Chishiya who didn’t look scared of you.
You smile, giving her a nod.
Just like that, the other players began giving you their thanks. Out of nine people, six of you survived. They all thanked you, the girl in the headband even hugging you.
All six of you walk out of the game, looking up as the Queen of Clubs’ blimp self-destructs with explosion. Beside you, Chishiya is also looking up, smirking. He was properly beautiful.
Arisu asked you what made you like this man so much and you told him it was because Chishiya grounds you. You never really knew how to explain it until now.
When you were fighting in the underground, it was brutal. It was your way of feeling pain–to feel alive. If you didn’t have Chishiya in your life, you would’ve stayed in the underground forever. But Shuntaro, he gives you a reason to come back to your life.
So you can annoy him.
Tumblr media
You were back in the apartment with Chishiya after you searched for some medical supplies for your injury. As always, he was silent.
“You can shower if you want,” Chishiya breaks the silence, pulling you off your thoughts while you sat on the couch. You nod and leave him alone in the living room.
After you shower, you wore a plain white shirt  and some lounge shorts you found in one of the drawers. When you step out of the room, Chishiya still wore the clothes he had outside but he stood over portable stove, stirring what smelled to be like instant noodles.
He sees you and carries the pot over to the table. The table is already set.
You never thought you’d see the day, Domestic Chishiya. A malewife. You place a hand over your mouth, preventing the smile on your face from forming. Instead, your face contorts into a funny face, earning a glare from Chishiya.
“Are you just going to stand there or eat?” He deadpans.
You bite your lips, shutting yourself up and made your way to the table. “Thank you for the food,” you said, sincerely. He scoffs, sitting across from you.
The two of you ate quietly, you slurp the ramen noodles like its your last meal. It wouldn’t be so bad. Instant Ramen by Chishiya. You giggle in your head, a smile spreading on your face.
When you finish your food, you opted to wash the dishes while Chishiya showers. Looking around, the apartment, you found something really cool—a record player. You inspect it and it looks like it’s the kind that doesn’t need electricity. Your heart swells with excitement, searching for vinyls around the place. You found a box inside the room filled with it and you clap to yourself happily.
“No way,” you react when you turn a knob and found it actually works.
“What’s that?” Chishiya walks in the living room, his jacket long abandoned and wearing a shirt and lounge shorts. Did he match what you were wearing?
“It’s the only thing he has,” he defends himself even when you haven’t said anything.
You pause, thinking if you should say anything but you ignore it, remembering your brilliant discovery. “Look! It’s a record player!”
He sighs. “You’ll only attract others with the sound.”
Your face fell. “Then I’ll beat them up.” You ignore his protests, going over to him and grabbing his hand to pull him over to the record player. He follows you limply, bored and annoyed as always.
You’re not very familiar with the vinyls so you just grab one with a familiar name, Nat King Cole. You placed it on the record player, figuring out how it plays. It began playing but it was too fast. You look up at Chishiya with wide eyes, wondering what you did wrong. He sighs, reaching over to some tiny lever on the turntable and pushing it to number 33.
“It’s the wrong speed,” he tells you.
The song began playing at a normal speed and you grin widely.
It was a slow love song and an idea pops into your mind.
“You know, something popped into my mind back there,” you face your friend, placing a hand on his shoulder. He stills but doesn’t remove your hand.
When I fall in love, it will be forever Or I’ll never fall in love
“We never got to finish our last dance back in high school,” you say with a smirk. “And you promised.”
Surprisingly, Chishiya doesn’t argue. So, you place your other hand around his neck, connecting it with your other hand. You pull him closer, his face inches away from yours. From here, you can see his face clearly. His eyelashes that flutter as he blinks, the creases of his forehead when he scrunches his brows slightly, his lips that were ever so slightly parted. He stays quiet, eyes on your face as if memorizing it like what you were doing to his.
You brought down your hands to place his on your waist and again, he surprisingly doesn’t remove them. You place your hands back to where they belong, pulling him in again. You started to sway with the music, willing Chishiya to do the same.
“I’m sorry.” The words come out of his mouth like air. If you weren’t close enough, you wouldn’t have heard it. Heat rushes to your face as your eyes widen. Did you really just hear Chishiya apologize to you?
Your shock melts into a tightlipped smile. “You’re just going to have to make it up to me by loving me forever.” It was a reference to the song that was playing.
He scoffs at your cheesy words. “Don’t be ridiculous.”
Love. It’s a privilege. You know that you two aren’t children made by love. It’s the reason why you two find it so hard to believe that love exists. Chishiya no doubt finds it harder to believe. He doesn’t understand the sentiment–the romance.
“Fine. Tell me,” he mumbled. You stare back at him, unsure of what he means. His eyes were steady, focused on you and begging in his own way. It takes years of experience to notice the subtle changes of emotion his face makes and your heart swells at the slight tremble of his lips. “Tell me what to do instead.”
Your brows slightly furrow, cheeks reddening and eyes glossy. When he’s not showcasing his intelligence and mischief, Chishiya is a man of few words. As your eyes are locked on each other, you bare yourself open into nothingness. Nothing mattered, not the games, not even the meaning of life. It was neither warm nor cold. Looking into Chishiya’s eyes was like looking into a mirror you cannot escape and yet you’d like to drown in them.
“Worship me,” you proposed in a commanding manner, finding confidence in yourself and what you feel for him.
“Worship?” he asks with a confused and amused tone in his voice.
“Love is overrated. Worship me instead.”
And he smirks, pulling your waist closer. His lips touch yours and your world exploded. There weren’t fireworks, no sparks… it’s just felt like summer day. A bright sky, lighting up the road as the breeze hits your skin. His hand is heavy on your waist, your body fully aware of all of him. Your mouth melted into his, everything else is forgotten. The tip of your tongue brushes his and he parts his lips, welcoming you in. You cling unto him, longing more of him.
And the moment I can feel that You feel that way too Is when I fall in love with you

Hi! can you do chishiya and his s/o in the jack of hearts of game please? Have a good day!
A/N: I don't really think this is all that good but I hope you enjoy it anyway.
Tumblr media
The unmistakable sounds of people fucking greeted YN and Chishiya as they walked into the Jack of Hearts game venue.
YN couldn't help the grin that grew on their face, "Seems like they have the right idea."
Chishiya hummed in agreement as he slipped the collar on, "Indulging in pleasure in a world of death... makes sense I suppose"
"Interested?" YN asked as they slipped on their own collar. "I'm sure we'll manage to find a free space on our calendar to fit it in, you know between running for our lives from the King of Spades and trying to find our group again."
Chishiya didn't respond, simply waving YN upstairs to the guardroom where a few other people were waiting. All of them looked uncomfortable from the noises coming from one of the cells. one of the older ladies gave them a judging look as they walked by as if expecting them to go off to a cell as well.
Chishiya finds a shadowed corner for them though YN can barely wait a couple of minutes of silence before they speak up again, "Do you think they came to this world together and were a thing before or do you think that they're just making the most out of a bad situation?"
Chishiya gives them an incredulous look." What difference does it make?"
YN shrugs, "None I suppose. I just wanted to gossip... I miss Kuina, she was always willing to gossip with me"
"You two spent more time gossiping than doing anything else." Chishiya engages in conversation. "A miracle you managed to clear games."
YN rolled her eyes at his derision, "It's not like there was much else to do. Most people aren't making DIY flamethrowers and backstabbing people, believe it or not."
Chishiya releases an amused huff and the conversation dies off again, at least until the noisy couple comes out to join the growing group of players filling the room, when chishiya whispers to YN, "They came together. Boss and secretary, perhaps?"
YN nods, "Uh-huh, the power dynamic must be crazy..."
┆彡
YN looked around at the players as the rules were explained, they weren’t exactly worried as they knew that Chishiya had their back but figuring out who the Jack was, is going to take an insane amount of time.
Heart games were psychological and YN had heard of heart games that had been designed so that only one person survives but this game seemed to be one that focused on backstabbing and creating suspicion amongst its players.
There was no time limit, unlimited food and visas weren't going to expire. Putting scared and nervous people in this environment only caused these people to get caught up in their thoughts and paranoid.
Whoever the Jack was, they designed this game to be a massacre. Picking off people whilst disguised as a player. A smart way to design the game but every player had a secret and putting someone in a situation like this may bring out a new side of them.
“So, what do you think?” Chishiya whispered as they watched groups being formed around them.
“To early to even make a guess, give me a couple more rounds”
Chishiya nodded before the young man next to them asked if they could team up, as YN watched two men interact on the floor below through the floor grate. The smaller man seemed to be establishing dominance to create an uneven partnership.
YN looked away from them as a young girl in a blue dress walked over to them with her group following behind her,
“Say, would you like to join our team?” She asks, “It’s okay if you don’t want to”
The guy that Chishiya was talking to quickly responds before looking over at Chishiya who looks at YN.
YN gives a nod and shrug, so Chishiya turns back to the girl and nods,
“Okay. Let’s work together.”
┆彡
YN watched Chishiya as he watched other people. He always had some sort of plan in motion at any given time and during games, he had backups to his backups.
YN had given up trying to guess whatever was going on in his head and usually went along with him though, they never relied on him a hundred per cent, making sure they had at least one plan because if something ever happened to Chishiya, they’ll be fucked.
Rounds kept on passing with at least one person dying each round and YN was over it, the smell of death permeated the air and no amount of free food and stay could convince them to stay any longer than necessary.
There were six of them left now, YN, Chishiya, Bada, Matsushita, Bada and Kotoko and just after the previous round ended with two more dead bodies, YN followed Chishiya to beg for him to set whatever plan he had in motion to end this game.
“You know who it is, right?” YN asks as they follow Chishiya around the food room.
Chishiya hummed as he picked up a packet of cookies and began snacking on them.
“You do?” YN huffed at their boyfriend, “End the game now. We can be done with this and look for Kuina.”
Chishiya offered YN cookies which they refused with a roll of their eyes, “The plan is already in motion.”
“How long have you known who the Jack of Hearts was?”
“I wasn’t certain until this round” Chishiya took a bite of his cookie, “Satisfied now?”
YN bit their tongue, it was no good to start an argument now, especially since Chishiya was never a fair person to argue against, he had a tendency to use personal things against whoever he was fighting against to win the argument.
┆彡
YN speed walked out of the prison after the Jack of Hearts was defeated and they had cleared the game. Though ‘defeated’ was a strong word when you remember that Banda and Yaba had tortured Matsushita to the point where he could no longer talk so when the round concluded and he couldn’t say his suit, his collar activated and killed him.
“Are you still upset?” Chishiya asked as he followed them out, jogging at times to catch up to YN’s fast pace.
“No” YN grumbled, their pace not decreasing, “Let’s just focus on finding Kuina and the others.”
Chishiya saddles up to YN’s side and doesn’t say a word but he does reach out and take YN’s hand in his. His version of an apology.

Haru
Chishiya Shuntaro x F!Reader
Chishiya would never forget the day, Haru was born. How is cold, uncaring, and emotionless exterior melted away even more. She didn’t even cry she just looked around the room. Taking in her new surroundings, and her gaze stopped at Chishiya. He could’ve sworn he saw the tiniest and faintest smile form on her face.
She knew immediately who her father is, he held her in his arms. For the first time; and his wife [Y/n] could’ve sworn she saw him him tear up the moment he looked down at his daughter. She was so small, yet her heart already seemed so big. She cooed, looking up at her father curiously.
“Chisi, can I hold our baby please?” [Y/n] asked, and he looked up at his wife. Then back down at Haru, who squirmed in his hold. He placed the baby on his wife’s chest and she smiled, crying tears of joy looking down at the baby.
As she grew, Haru became a force to be reckoned with. She was high of energy, normal for children. She loved running around in the park, and playing at the public playgrounds.
Chishiya and [Y/n], decided to surprise Haru with their first house. Haru had a bigger room, painted a pastel yellow (her favorite color). With different colored butterflies scattered across the room.
She loved it so much, and the moment she saw the backyard and all the space she had to run around. She was ecstatic. Seeing their daughter this happy melted the married couples heart.
But that all changed, once they’d suddenly entered Borderlands.
[Y/n] covered Haru’s mouth with her hand, as a tiny scream escaped her mouth. Her tiny body shaking violently as the gunshots echoed throughout the apartment building.
Chishiya kept watching, as his family stayed hidden. He looked down noticing the tears rolling down, his daughters cheek and wished she wasn’t brought into this upside down version of their world.
She didn’t deserve it, she was too young to understand everything going on. And couldn’t even comprehend the severity of the games. No child, should be experiencing such gruesome and violent acts at their age.
[Y/n] looked up at Chishiya tears rolling down her cheeks, as she held her daughter in her arms. Trying her best too soothe the little girl. As she gripped onto her mothers clothes for dear life. Chishiya handed his wife his headphones, and she placed them over her daughter’s head. Giving her some sort of comfort.
She kissed her daughter on the forehead, “I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry.” She whispered, with each gunshot that echoed throughout the apartment complex. Haru turned towards her father, who kept his eyes on something on the floor below them. Her mother finger ran through her hair, that was similar to that of her fathers.
Suddenly, she noticed a stuffed grey haired cat plushy on the ground. She reached towards it and picked it up, [Y/n] looked at it curiously.
‘That wasn’t there before?’
But it immediately caught Haru’s eyes, and she quietly played with it. Keeping her entertained, as she blocked out the noises of the gunshots.

Risk It All (30)- Choose Life pt.1
Tumblr media
Genre: Chishiya x f!Reader| angst | eventual smut
Warning: mentions of injuries/blood/violence
A/N:lmao this is nearly the end of the first season yet I've been writing this story for YEARS???

Tumblr media
Neither of you stopped, weaving in and out of burnings, over and under rubble as your feet carried you as far away as possible. Ignoring the chance you were dragging yourself into more danger, you let Chishiya guide you.
“In here!”
It was a small hardware store, the windows were already broken and the shelves raided, no doubt for weapons but luckily hidden behind the counter was a set of stairs. You tripped up them still holding each other's hand. As much as you desperately wanted to slump against the floor and let your lungs replenish the mass amounts of oxygen that you had depleted due to your impromptu sprint you knew that safety wasn’t guaranteed.
“Help me get this across the door.” You gesture to a solid filing cabinet. Mustering up the last of your shared strength you locked yourselves in. Bullets wouldn’t get through metal that thick.
The windows thankfully hadn’t been smashed but there was no heat.
This wasn’t like the home Chishiya had made.
“Did you get hit?” Chishiya asked through a pant. “How is your arm?”
“Fine.” You check to make sure. “What about you?”
He lifts his shirt before nodding. “It didn’t reopen, it’s okay.”
“What the fuck was that.” You drop your head against the wall. “How did he find us.”
Chishiya pulled off his backpack, handing you a bottle of water. “I think he knew people would be heading there to join the game.”
You stilled, the bottle clutched in your hand. “The game Kuina and An left to join?”
“Yeah probably.” He takes another swig of the water before recapping it and putting it back in his bag. “Why?”
“What if they got shot?”
He shakes his head. “Trust me Kuina is like a leech, she won’t die.”
“But what if-“
“Stop worrying about them.” He cuts you off. “They weren’t the ones that just nearly got shot to death, it’s okay to care about them but you have to prioritise yourself. Stop being irrational.”
“I’m not being irrational, I'm worrying about a friend.” You explain through gritted teeth.
He stares at you blankly. “Do you think Kuina would want you to worry in this way?”
You hate how he makes a good point.
Kuina would be angered at the thought you were worrying about her when your own life had been in danger. “No, she wouldn’t.”
“Then forget about her for a while. It’s okay to do that. It’s okay to care for yourself.” He assures you. “We need to figure out where we are.”
You peek out of the window, dropping back into your previous position when you see nothing. “I didn’t see any signs as we ran, it’s too dark.”
He agreed. “We will have to wait until the sun comes up but whatever is going on, I think this is coming to an end.”
“You think the games are nearly complete?”
He sounds sure. “I think that we have nearly won every card we need.”
“I hope so.” You wish. “I don’t think either of us will fare well against another game.”
“We should rest.” He manages to find a blanket and a cushion, laying them down on the floor. “You sleep first we can take it in turns, I’ll wake you up in a little so we can switch.”
“Are you sure?” You eye the makeshift bed. “You’ve just come out of a game one that was no doubt exhausting, mentally if not physically. I’m okay you want to sleep first.”
“No, it’s okay.” He declines the offer. “You get some sleep, I'm going to try and see if there is anything useful here, just let me know if I make too much noise.”
“Okay.” You agree, laying atop the blanket. “Goodnight.”
“Mhm.”
Despite his warning about making noise you don’t hear anything, it was hard to drift off at first. Your mind ran a world of its own as it had you picturing the masked gunman shooting down the door any second but eventually, the adrenaline you’d worked up burned out and you were left depleted and exhausted.
This time there were no dreams, just a void.
“Hey.” You felt yourself being sat up.
“What?” You grumbled, still disoriented from your nap. “What’s wrong?”
“It’s been a few hours.” Ah, it was time to switch.
You sit up, huffing as you brush the stray hairs out of your face. “Okay you sleep, I’ll take watch.”
“Okay.” He agrees, slipping onto the mat you’d just moved from. “I found a spare wrench, it’s against the wall.”
“Oh that’s good.” You yawn, leaning against the wall opposite Chishiya. “Sleep.”
“Goodnight.” He mumbles.
It didn’t take him long to fall asleep, it made sense though. He hadn’t exactly had time to rest after his game and it was unlikely he had managed to eat anything.
That was another pressing matter - food.
You quietly looked around, sifting through drawers and cupboards. Most of it was no good, perishable foods that were so rotten they looked as if they had been there for a millennia.
At this point they probably could have been.
It was hard not to wonder what was happening in the real world, if time passed different here then how long had you been gone? Years? Months? Days? It felt as though you’d been here for at least a year but it was probably something more like a few months.
The sun was already rising, it seemed as though some days night lasted forever, an unending darkness accompanied by a few hours of dull sunshine but some days it was the opposite, a hot sun with little reprieve found in the minimal hours of darkness that coats the city.
Today seemed like the latter.
You peered over the windowsill, the city as always was dead but you took that as a positive rather than a negative, you dropped back to the floor with a thud.
It was probably weird to watch Chishiya sleep but it wasn’t as though you had a variety of things to keep you entertained, you missed the small house and all of its perks. You forgot, even for a few days, what it was like to have absolutely nothing in a world where there was no permanency.
Your life in the real world - if it could be called that - had grown dull. There wasn’t much variety in the things you’d do, you were lonely and had grown accustomed to living alone but you missed how permanent things were. You had a home you could return to, you had a job, you had people you’d interact with, the sun rose and set at a normal time, you could go to stores and not worry about the shelves being empty.
Nothing here was permanent, not even the people, that’s what hurt you the most.
From the corner of your eye you saw an object stutter in the sky, you scrambled up, your heart racing in preparation to run.
Only to see something that, for once, provided you comfort.
“Chishiya wake up!” You slap his chest.
He jolts up, body rigid. “What?!”
“Look!” You point out the window at the mass ball of flames falling upon the city.
“Is that the blimp?” He squints. “It’s the king of spades. If I’ve worked it out correctly and I’m sure I have, that means after Kuina and Ans game finishes there’s just one game left.”
“What one?” You ask, a part of you relaxing at the blimp crashing into the ground.
“The queen of hearts.”
“We should go.” He stands, brushing his clothes off.
You quickly pack up, both taking a few sips of water and halving an oat bar before setting off.
The journey to the final blimp was thankfully a short one, the game stationed relatively close to the hardware store you'd hidden in the day prior. It made sense, you were practically in the heart of the city.
“Is that-“ You were shocked to see so many familiar faces. “Arisu? Usagi?” You called out.
They both turned to you at the same time, eyeing Chishiya cautiously before approaching you. “You’re alive?”
“Clearly.” Chishiya scoffs under his breath before turning to you. “I’ll be over here.”
You nod as he walks away. “How are you both?”
Arisu smiles although it’s strained. “As well as can be, are you going to play?”
“No.” You shook your head. “I have enough days on my visa.”
Usagi shrugs. “We played a few, I think we all just want this to be over.”
“You can say that again.” Arisu laughs. “Heart games are never good.”
“They aren’t.” You agree, the memories of your own horrifying experience with the card were always on your mind. “Have you seen anyone else?”
“Like who?”
“ An? Kuina?” You ask.
“Not for a while.” Usagi answers. “I saw them both after we split up at the train station they were doing okay.”
“We were staying together.” You explains. “Only for a few days but they both had to leave to join a game.”
“The Queen of Clubs?” Arisu questions.
You make a noise of affirmation. “How did you know?”
“I saw the blimp pass over, I also saw it crash.”
If the game was over and they weren’t here that could mean….
“Didn’t you say you were staying together?” Usagi seems to notice your train of thought and intervenes. “Did they know you were coming here?”
“No.” You purse your lips. “We were hiding out at a small house type hut but the king of spades turned up and quite literally blew it up.”
“I’m sure they are fine.” Usagi rubs your arm. “They probably went back there first.”
You truly hoped that was the case.
“Thanks.” You smile at her. “Is there anyone else here?”
The atmosphere around you turned into something solemn.“Tata…he passed away during a game.”
“How?” You weren’t close with him but he wasn’t a bad person.
Arisu looks at you with unbridled guilt. “He died helping us win.”
“I’m sure he wouldn’t regret that choice.” You reassure him, it was never easy when you were the reason for someone’s death even when you weren’t directly involved in it. “I’m glad you’re both okay.”
“Likewise.” He doesn’t make an attempt to smile, you can understand why. “I think the game is starting.”
You look back to find the gates surrounding the large building open, something they hadn’t been when you arrived. “I’m gonna go get Chishiya.”
He seems to have the same idea as he walks towards you. “Happy?”
“Just peachy.” You retort sarcastically. “Let’s go.”
“Without us?” You could scream as you turn back to see Kuina and An walking towards you, both worse for wear with various cuts and bruises littering their pale bodies.
“Fuck.” You curse as you run towards them, your arms wrapping around their waist as you help them stay upright. “Chishiya!”
He understands and wraps Ans arm around his shoulder. “You owe me, both of you owe me.”
“Stop complaining.” You hiss at him. “What happened to you two?”
“We won our game but it was hard.” Kuina says tiredly. “I need to sit.”
“Here.” You help them both slump down against the set of stairs beside the building. “You’ll be okay, you will. Chishiya do you have anything to help?”
He looks at the pair before grabbing your hand and pulling you aside. “I’ll be honest. I don’t think they are going to make it.”
“Don’t say that.” You felt the colour drain from your face. “You can help them.”
“There’s too much blood.” He shakes his head. “It will be pointless.”
“Chishiya please.” You bat away your tears. “I can’t lose them.”
He groans but pulls the bag off his back. “What one first?”
“Her.” An nudges Kuina. “She has it worse.”
“Take this.” Chishiya shoved a small bottle of cleaning alcohol into your hands. “Clean as much as you can. I’ll deal with Kuina.”
“What happened?” You glance at Arisu before tuning back to An.
“They were in a game.” Your voice wavers as you carefully dab at the large gash on Ans leg. “We need to finish this and get out of here, they need a hospital.”
“Usagi and I have decided to play.” He informs you. “I’ll do my best.”
You hear him turn away. “Arisu?”
He turns back to you. “Yeah?”
“I know you can win this.”
You watch as he and Usagi disappear inside the building, both of them limping as they go, clearly sustaining their own injuries.
“Hey?” An croaks.
You turn your attention back to her. “Yeah?”
“It’s okay.” It takes her far more effort than it should to brush the tears away from your cheeks. “It’s okay.”
Arisu needed to win.
You needed to get out.
They needed to live.
You needed them to live.

Thinking about how relaxing would be to stay by the Beach pool, your legs in the water, a cool breeze brushing your skin in the depth of night, the moon illuminating the dark sky. But suddenly, you're bothered by the sounds of someone's steps. Chishiya.
"Can't sleep?" He said.
His hands are stuffed in his pockets, his white hoodie half zipped up.
"not really...today's game was pretty tough"
You're avoiding Chishiya's face, keeping your stare up at the beautiful stars that portray the sky so lovely you can't look away. Chishiya nods, taking a few more steps toward you as he keeps his eyes on your figure.
"what card suit did you have?" He asked.
"three of spades, why?"
Chishiya's lips curl upward into a small smirk, taking his eyes off you for a few seconds before returning to stare at you.
"three of spades? Weird, I haven't seen it marked at the wall. Are you sure it was three of spades?"
You stop for a second, your breath caught in your throat for a second. God, you're so stupid. So stupid. How could you tell him the actual card suit?
"Probably Hatter forgot to" you say quietly, still not looking at Chishiya.
Yeah right.
Hatter never forgot to mark the cards. Your heart started beating a bit faster at the thought of getting caught.
Chishiya's smirk grew a bit wider at this. He was fully aware you're lying and the fact that he caught you with something like that made him feel even prouder of himself.
"Come on ___, I'm not stupid, I know you're lying" He rolled his eyes nonchalantly.
"What do you want, Chishiya?"
You know if somebody else finds out about this you're dead. Hatter doesn't make any exceptions. Ever.
"I want a little pawn to spy on Hatter for me. I plan on getting out of here and since Hatter loves to hide things really well, I need a backup plan in case I don't find all the cards."
You finally look away from the dark sky and shift your eyes on him. His expression was stern but that arrogant smirk still plastered on his face. He knew what he was doing.
"and if I don't...?" Your voice was quivering slightly, your hands turning cold at the stress put on your shoulders and at the fear of getting caught by Hatter or someone else.
"I'll tell Hatter what you did. I'm not here to play games with you ___, I played enough games in the past few months"
His expression never changed, it was like he was empty inside. No emotion...just emptiness.
"Fine."
Chishiya sure knew how to ruin someone's peaceful night.

Scalpels and Paintbrushes || Chishiya Shuntarô x Reader
- read ‘til the end for notes -
When a freelance artist travels to Japan to rekindle her passion for art and her life, she finds herself in a whole other predicament. Dangerous games, dangerous people, a dangerous world with dangerous rules. She’s alone, fending for herself, until she meets a disoriented medical student that will bring her comfort but might bring more difficulties and heartbreak aswell.
TW: gore, Niragi being Niragi
Chapter 7: I am not a Woman I'm a God
Tumblr media
The first two weeks of being alone without Chishiya were the worse, I felt disoriented, like I was a ship lost in a turbulent sea without an anchor to keep me in place. I lost an arm and it also felt like I had lost a friend, or more than that... a lover.
I didn't know what we were, everyday, I wrapped my wound and felt the stump left instead of my arm, wanting it to be him helping me lick my wounds. Everyday I fall asleep with my walkie talkie clutched tight in my arms. I was waiting for him, because he was the only one I had left. And unlike Hide or Yumeko, he wasn't dead, I didn't kill him, he was fine....was he? Is he? I still have no news and I am starting to lose my mind. I try to be positive, to tell myself he'll call but then another week passes. Two more games are completed. They are harder when you only have one arm left.
"I should get in better shape, I'm back at letting myself die at this point."
Looking in the mirror I see that the chub that used to be around my hips and waist, and the one around my legs and right arm are gone. My face is looking thinner and my clavicles start to show. It has been hard taking care of myself while lacking an arm and someone to help me in this disorienting situation. I still needed to find ways to make everything easier for myself.
"I need to eat more, and I definitely need to do something about this nest of hair."
"Seriously, I need to put on some muscles, I won't be able to help anyone out if I'm a dead woman standing. C'mon (y/n) he'll call when he can, when he's ready. He said he needed time, and so you will need some too, not thinking about him, but getting better for others and him to see that you are here, alive and well and ready to help."
Because that was my vow to Hide and Yumeko. That I'll help others in this shitshow of a world.
And with a sigh I cover up the mirror and prepare myself to go get the traps I set outside for wild rabbits, hoping for a good catch. Hunting by setting traps was by far the easiest way to get food for me, as I couldnt hunt with only one arm, or at least not yet, I'd adapt sooner or later I hope.
Fortunately, three rabbits were caught in my net. Enough to last me two days, and as I could make broth out of the bones they would last me even more.
That was how my life was since Chishiya left. One armed lass against the cruel world of the borderlands, waiting for her beau to call. Playing games when absolutely needed and hoping they didn't require two arms or else she'd be royally fucked.
And then three weeks turned into four, then five, six, seven, two months, then three, then four.
And as I lost hope of ever seeing him again, whether it be because he died or ghosted me, which would be the same in essence, I decided to take it upon myself to get stronger.
So one might expect a training montage while I say this and honestly it might be better but the reality is more cruel unfortunately.
It started after the one month mark:
In the mornings I'd wake up and run until my legs and lungs gave out, having two arms to catch yourself is easily taken for granted in situations like this one and I most often than not face planted.
Nose bloodied I made my way to the traps, some days luckier and more bountiful than others.
More often than not I'd go to games whenever I could in the evenings, they'd keep my mind sharp and would force me to adapt to my new disability. And as monstrous as it sounds, you easily get adapted to the sight of brain matter and organs on the floor and walls.
My stump hurt like crazy still, it also itched under the bandages. And more often than not, I woke up with the phantom pains, feeling as if my arm got ripped from me, again and again.
I could rarely fall asleep, so I went to take Chishiya's old blouse and used it to cuddle as i curled on myself during the hard nighs, which were most of them.
After the two months mark I got better:
My legs and lungs had a harder time giving out so I ran further and faster until they did.
I also barely managed to cut my hair at this point, it was down to the middle of my back and looked just about ready to be a rat king. So with gardening scissors, a lot of shaking and a lot of patience I managed to look like a little boy who cut his hair with daddy's ball trimmer. It was bad, but more breathable, easier to take care of, and I mean who doesn't like a short haired, one armed wonder?
I didn't but you get used to it when it's all you can have.
I also started hunting bigger catches, like wild boar. And to do so I had to learn by myself, with the help of books I found in the mall book store. My japanese, having gotten much better in the bast two months, helped me enough that I could decypher how to observe and analyse the tell tale signs of the presence of boars. Bite marks on the trees, shape of frictions on the ground, hoof marks...
And that also meant I had to learn how to make spears. You never know how much more useful can your legs get until you use them as a second arm to hold wood down as you sharpen it. And they are definitely of use when trapping a boar down as you pin the beast with all your weight and deliver the killing blow.
That also meant my right arm got much stronger, I mean to compensate for my lacking left one, I had to make it better than it was. So, remembering Yumeko's self defence lessons I started to use them on real people in games.
To train of course.
.
.
.
But also because those people really need to get a grip. The lack of physically present autorities and the permission to commit atrocities really get to some people and they need to get their brains out of their asses before they get got.
Of course if assholes died it isn't much of my fault, I mean I do warn them. But do I go out of my way to save a guy that just groped a middle school girl? Nah. Fuck that. I much prefer saving the pregnant woman from getting killed by a masked kitsune.
And the third month I started to see:
My stump had healed almost fully by this point, it was itchy yes, the phantom pains were killing me, also yes. But there were almost no signs of fresh flesh or almost no risk of infections. That was one less worry to have? But to give me more balance I put a belt around it and gave it some weight, it would help me be better and faster on my feet without fearing that I'll fall every second that I live.
The walkie talkie was loud with silence, it teased me, laughed in my face at my abandonment so I hid it in Yumeko's stuff. And speaking of Yumeko and Hide, I organized their stuff in boxes, but not without crying at the memories and reiterating my vow to them.
I swore once more to them that I'd live once more, but also that as much as I'll help the ones around me I won't trust anyone to be close again. Not if it ends up with death, not if it ends up with them leaving
I left the idea of Chishiya contacting me again, maybe he did die, maybe he really did just leave, or maybe he broke or lost his walkie talkie. But I have to forget him, as good as it was he isn't here anymore so I have to learn to be by myself.
And that had to be the hardest thing.
"Goodbye Shuntarô."
I say as I close the box containing his scrubs, ID and white vest.
And until the summer I thrived:
After the third and fourth months I felt it, how I hardened mentally. The loneliness didn't feel quite as gruelling, the sound of silence not as mean. The pain in my stump stopped and other than my flashes of phantom pain I was, almost back to normal, as normal as I could be lacking a limb.
During a game in Harajuku I also found much better clothes than what I had. And I decided to treat myself, a trench coat, similar to the one from the Kuchisake-Onna game that felt was years ago. But also better, stronger and more comfortable combat boots. The rest was easy enough to find as Harajuku is the fashion district of Tokyo. But looking in the mirror, it was a different me than the one I was when I first came to Japan.
"It pains me to say it, but this batshit insane game really did give me my spark back. Just not in the way I had hoped."
But a win is a win, and I was not about to refuse something alright happening to me.
Hunting was bountiful, once every four to five days I could catch a boar and on the daily would be fish, some rabbit too. I also started to grow chillies, soy, sorghum and wheat as they were easy to conserve and create durable meals out of.
As time passed I saw some sort of faction make itself more and more known, people dressed in bikinis and other swimsuits rolling around in old cars with guns and a strong smell of weed following them. They were loud and participated in a few games with me, seeming more excitable and deranged than the average game player around.
So, I kept an eye on them, danger is common around here but they were trouble.
"Why are you looking at those people like that?"
I turn around to see a tall lanky girl with dreadlocks looking at me curiously.
"It's fine, they just seem way too excited to be here."
"I hear you. I'm Kuina, nice to meet you."
"You're part of their org aren't you Kuina-san?"
"Oh please don't be so formal with me. And yeah, I am. Is that a problem?"
She asks looking a tad bit nervous.
"As long as you don't cause any problem, no. But if your friends do don't expect me to go easy on them."
"You didn't tell me your name?"
"It's (y/n). You've been with them for long?"
"Nah, only a month or so? I had a good card they wanted so they brought me to their boss and boom."
She shows her wrist, showing a locker key bracelet with a number on it.
So, it seems this org was looking for cards, did they want to have every number from every suit? Why would that be?
Could it be their answer to being out here, could it be a way out?
It would be stupid, but maybe not impossible.
All of a sudden a chime is heard.
"Game, Eight of Spades: The Cage. You will have weapons at your disposition and the group will be separated in four smaller player groups, each fighting in one of the four arenas until only one is left alive. The four players left will be granted their visas. Good luck!"
Damn, my fucking arm. I'm fucked, but I need to try.
On the four tables are an array of simple short range weapons, american fists, many types of knives, boxing gloves reinforced with metal, batons, tonfas, bo, kendo swords. All in all, they'd be better for abled people.
All except for one. A long and strudy steel chain whip with its blades looking ready to shred flesh.
I close my hand in a fist, trying to calm my shudders, and take the whip. It was heavy but not too much, the lack of material made it lighter than a two handed sword but the length made it harder to manipulate than a butcher knife. They will do, they have to. and all of a sudden it glows teal, displaying my name on the pommel.
"Players, please separate in even numbers to form the groups"
Kuina and five other people are sent to one side of the room to an arena as she nods good luck to me and I to her. A bald and tattoed man, feeling similar to a snake somehow, lead his group to another arena. A long black haired man with a monochrome patterned shirt and a sadistic smile lead his to the penultimate arena. And I was left walking with my own group to the last one.
Here we were given earphones.
"Welcome to arena four. The rules are simple, the matches are one to one and end only when one of you is dead. The winners will fight each other again one to one until two are left, the winner of this last fight will recieve their visas and be granted the right to keep their weapon. Good luck."
Some look anxious and others look extatic, as for the latter one of them approaches me and grabs me by the stump.
"I'll take you, it'll be an easy win for an easy woman."
"Of course you go for the disabled one, trying to compensate for something big boy?"
The people around us laugh.
"Cause if so c'mere, mommy will put you to sleep so you can think on it. Unless I bashed your brains in enough that I destroyed your last braincells."
I get in the arena and motion for him to come teasingly.
"(y/l/n) (y/n) against Yoshitsuke Kunizaku"
And Kunizaku doesn't waste time, coming at me full speed with his machete. So I drop to the ground and kick his feet from under him, his momentum making him fall harder than he would've normally.
He is like a boar.
He attacks again and again, brashly but with a strength to worry about. So just like a boar I slowly turn around him, I make him lose his breath with unnecessary chases.
He nicks me on the face, under the breasts, on the arm, on the leg. But he breathes herder, and as I evade him I swing my whip, and I cut and lacerate his legs.
And so they give up on him.
And he is left writhing, clawing his way to his machete and when he does he blindly cuts as he tries to get back to his feet.
"You see the sad thing about a bladed whip is that I can't kill you at once, so don't make it harder for yourself little boar."
The whip is lashed at the man, and the arm holding his weapon is cut again and again until only bone and mangled flesh are left. And as he bleeds and screams I swing the whip again and again and again. My rage, my stress, and the pain felt during the past months possessing my senses as I finish by wrapping the whip around his head and cutting it clean off.
.
.
.
"(y/l/n) (y/n) wins"
And I pant as I get off the arena, people looking at me while I pant and wake up from my haze. The rest of the fights are a blur until mine.
She was fast and slippery like a fish. She hit with small cuts, nothing impairing but definitely would make you lose enough blood on the long run so that she could win.
So instead of playing around like with the boar, I take her by her hair and kick her to the ground, then make her a belt out of my whip. I try to shut my brain off as I saw her in half and she screams in agony.
What am I doing with myself. That I what I ask to the inner me who laughs and just say one word that rises bile in my mouth.
"Survive"
Yeah, right, survive.
"(y/l/n) (y/n) wins"
My last oponent is a very tall man, probably ex military. He looks, blank. And I would be scared of him, if I wasn't already of myself. This game was only one of the many after the Eight of Hearts in which I had to kill someone....multiple someones. And I was doing it flawlessly. As I did last time and the time before. And the fact that I didn't feel much while doing it was disgusting me.
But that's how the borderlands are. They change you, and it's never for the best.
"(y/l/n) (y/n) against Hikaru Kazushi"
He waits for me to attack first. He is patient, almost catatonic. It's a game of who will crack first and give the upper hand to the adversary.
So I slowly approach, wating to tease, to tempt him to attack first but he doesn't. So I turn around and prepare my whip, acting as if I was preparing an attack.
And he beats me to it.
Hitting the back of my head with his american fists. He turns me around expertedly and hits just about everything he can.
My eyes start to fade to black.
I need to find an opening
But where?
WHERE?!
I don't want to die, not yet, I need to repent, I need to uphold my promise
I NEED TO LIVE
"Found it."
He was using his left arm more, flinching when using his right. When I heard him move, he limped and seeing as he ended with his right leg he limped from the left.
So as he winds his right arm to hit my face I turn at the last moment, trapping it between my stump and my ribcage in my armpit. I kick his crotch a few times to destabilize him and turn us so I would be on top of him, his arm still in my grasp. And I wind my legs around his left leg and squeeze, hearing a pained yell from him and a crack from the leg. I then take care of the right arm and hit his elbow, hitting it so that it breaks and then bending the limb to an unnatural angle, the arm almost completely cut in two.
"See, now we're twinsies!"
I say as I agitate my stump in his horrified face and then use what is left of my left arm to cut his hair flow. With my right arm I grab my discarded weapon and bring it to the throat of the bleeding man beneath me and slit his throat.
As he gargles with his blood chimes are resonating all around the building.
"Takatora Samura, Suguru Niragi, Hikari Kuina and (y/l/n) (y/n) congratulations!"
I get up and as I do I try not to look beneath me as I fear I will vomit. And I stay here for a while, standing up without moving. My breaths short and rapid, body covered in blood, short hair sticking to me like glue with my sweat and blood.
"Damn woman, that was hot. Do you wanna do the same but in my bed, I'd love for you to draw my blood and use me as a fucking punching ball as I fuck you into my mattress and cut you open."
wha- What the fuck?
"What the hell Niragi, don't you know how to talk to a woman?!"
"As if YOU were a woman Kuina. Plus she isn't just a woman, she's a fucking war machine! A blood Goddess!"
I turn to see that Kuina was arguing with the man that flirted with me...? The psycho himself was the monochrome patterned shirt wearing man from group three.
"Blood Goddess? I'm flattered but refrain from talking to me like that or I'll castrate you kiddo."
The tattoed dobby wannabe snickered at that and full on laughed when Niragi glared at him.
"We've seen you around sexy, you've made quite the impression. Everyone at The Beach knows about you one way or the other, you've killed many of us and always seem to observe. We'd like to recruit you, we're sure you got some good cards, plus we could have some fun you and I. One on one, or if you want more I could always call more friends, fill you up real good with all of us until you're round and satisfied."
I visibly cringe at this, I've seen him around too. Always laughing, always smiling, always with his gun and always sadistic and horrendous towards others if he isn't already gutting them open.
"Listen I get what your org is trying to do and I'm fine on my own, why should I get in?"
"Why not, we have electricity, we have pleanty of food, booze, drugs, anyone you could ever want to have sex with. We have comfortable beds and a shelter that is assured against any type of exterior attack from greedy newbies or other factions."
"Yeah! And (y/n) I could really use a lady friend, shit is pretty much boring for me female wise there, they all act the same and you seem cool! Wouldn't you like a friend?"
"Not really no, you know what happens to people around here, I'm not losing someone else around here Kuina."
She nods, knowing the feeling. And then her head shoots back up with her eyes sparkling. And she starts to talk as we get out of the building and towards their cars.
"Listen I know you don't want to come and I won't force you but if you have enough good cards you could very much become a member of the executive council, and then you'd get infos no one else has and influence!"
"And why why would I care?"
"From what I know you want to protect people right? With those you could very well be the guardian of our people here at The Beach. There will always be a purpose for you there, and you won't be alone!"
That had me interested. Loneliness, I had gotten adapted to it but it was certainly getting to me at times. There I could go to my room or disappear outside if I needed alone time.
I also would have a permanent job. Whether as a card collector or as a "guardian" as Kuina put. It would certainly give me a purpose other than waiting until I get a new game and visa.
And it would certainly beat the emptiness at home.
So I sighed and climbed in the car next to Kuina who beamed at me.
"Niragi, drive before I change my mind."
He snickers and answers with a playful "yes ma'am" as he speeds on the road.
It was quiet surprisingly, the night was black and it was cold enough to stay awake but it was also so comfortable. The wind was blowing on us. And I stood straight, holding the headrest of Last Boss (as I learned he prefers to be called) and let myself relax a bit. The blood caked on me was going to suck ass but I'm finally going to be able to have a bath. From what I've heard they even have a sauna.
"How the fuck do you guys have so much, are you in a hotel?"
"Sorta, yeah. We're in a holiday resort, so there's the hotel but also a shit load more."
"Damn. That's fun."
"Where did you live before?"
"Oh a store in a mall that old friends and I made into a cool living space. We recycled rain water, and lately I even grew my own food for some things. I hunted for my meat in the suburbs, mostly boar and rabbit but also fish. It was calm enough but I had to wack away a few assholes that tried to overrun the place."
Kuina then stands up holding Niragi's headrest to be with me.
"We also recycle rain water, we use the fuel from cars to fuel our generators to make electricity and the old cars are our means of travelling since electronics are not worth much in this world compared to analog."
"Yeah, I can see you guys are self sufficient if The Beach hasn't crumbled yet in the time it has been around, even with the large number you guys seem to be."
And as I finish talking I hear yells from afar, they get louder and louder as we get to the coast where a resort is situated.
They scream at us like the public yells in joy after a gladiator wins his fight against a feral animal, like a country welcoming their war heroes. And I look at Kuina, silently asking her if it was always this way, and by the way she laughs at my face, it seems to be the case.
And after the car was parked Kuina said goodbye to me and Niragi and Last Boss lead me to where I'd be introduced to the "executive council". Overall, I respect the organization of...well, the organization. And so we walked, up many stairs and down many corridors until we arrived at a large double door.
"So uh lady let me tell you, the boss is quit an egotistical asshole so try not to bite his head off, though I'd love to see it."
"Niragi, I'm not interested."
"Hey, but you might be some time!"
"Yeah, no. I like my men less psychotic and my women nicer. Open the door please? I'd rather get this done quickly and be able to shower."
"Sure baby, come to me anytime you want to-"
"Niragi."
And with that he knocked, calling upon the people inside who he contacted previously via walkie talkie, and opened the door with Last Boss. They allowed me to walk first and closed the door behind me.
"Come, come! Please sit! I am Hatter, the boss of this utopia that is The Beach!"
Yeah he's a hatter alright, a mad one for sure. Extravagant and loud but most importantly way too confident.
"And you, who are you sweetie? I gotta know who my future member is after all!"
"(y/n)."
"Not a talker are you?"
"Not really no, I'm efficient in my work, that's all you need to know."
"And that's fine! I love it when we have efficient players! What cards do you have darling?"
I reach into my backpack and pull a packet of a dozen or so cards and Hatter looks extatic. And as he looks excitedly through the cards that he snatched from me I look around the room. There is one man with glasses, he seems tense. A woman with sunglasses who seems to be impatient. A woman with short side bangs and long black hair who seems almost like she is pleased. A tall muscular man, probably ex military. And in the far back someone, in white...
In Hide's old clothes.
He looks at me, face lacking expressions but eyes showing surprise and maybe even fear.
The man that left.
The man who abandonned me.
The man I tried so hard not to think about anymore, not to love anymore.

hi :) which chishiya fic do u guys want to see next ?
1. “greed” . a moment of rest for you two: no games nor violence, just peace. [chishiya x reader, in which they rest beside each other in an abandoned garden. based off of greed by jiwoo.]
2. untitled . chishiya, who shows nothing but detest towards you. and you, who shows nothing but care and respect for him. it’s almost embarrassing when he realizes how motherly you are to him, and as much as he “dislikes” your presence, a part of him (his inner child) yearns for your care. [chishiya x med classmate!reader, in which you simply cannot stop caring for chishiya — not for the sake of love, but just because you want to.]
3. “work hard!” . he was content with the neutral comfort and safe distance your relationship had (with the rare affectionate moments), but seeing you now in a position where he is responsible for your survival makes him wish he had done a little better. [chishiya x ill!reader, in which his lover develops an illness, and although cure-able, it sends him head first into an unfamiliar spiral of anxiety. why? because he’s responsible for the surgery.]

I would love to know what Chishiya is like in group projects in high school or college.
I can see him being like: listen, I'll do the work myself, just don't let your stupidity get on the way. If you don't annoy me, I won't annoy you.
Chishiya, c'mon, don't be so mean.

hiii could you please write chishiya x reader in episode 4? maybe they’d been in the group together before and had some type of fight but of course they have to rely on one another now and reader still doesn’t know whether to trust him or not?
First of all, I apologize for taking so long to do this request (+ the ones I have in my inbox). January was not kind to me, I almost got fired and then I got sick and I still am but hopefully, February is much kinder.
Tumblr media
He used them. They hated him.
Weeks, if not months of what you thought was friendship and bonding down the drain because he had used you.
He wanted to get out, and escape this world but so did everyone else, so what gave him the right? If Hatter's theory was correct, Chishiya was high enough up on The Beach hierarchy that he wouldn't have to wait terribly long anyway but that was not the type of person Chishiya was.
Chiyshiya had used you, Arisu and Kuina, all three of you were manipulated and disposed of once Chishiya had all of the cards that Hatter and company had collected.
All that had been for nought as Hatter died, The Beach had turned into a game and the second stage had begun.
The last time you saw Chishiya, you cursed and glared at him before you disappeared from the crowd watching The Beach burn down.
Now here you were, waiting in a prison, waiting for The Jack of Hearts game to begin.
You were a solo player since The Ten of Hearst game at The Beach and it had worked out well for you. You didn't have to worry about any partners you were with, any partnerships you had were short and only for clearing games. nothing long-term. You had learned your lesson.
You had been too caught up on people watching that you hadn't noticed Chishiya Walk in and he had noticed and took the opportunity to get the jump on you.
"Nice to see that you're still alive" Chishiya muttered as he shifted to your side
You whipped around to face him, glare on your face as soon as you heard his voice.
"You've got to be fucking kidding me..."
Chishiya sent you a snarky grin, "Long time no see"
"Fuck off"
You tried to move around him and go to the other side of the room, when the speakers crackled to life, announcing the start of the game. You listened as they explained the rules, trying your hardest to ignore Chishiya right next to you.
Your mood soured as you realised that this game required partnership and you were in no mood to do teamwork in any form.
You watch everyone as they come to the same conclusion, pairs that had joined the game together were separating themselves from the rest of the players, others getting into pairs or small groups and one large group formed, led by a preppy young woman.
As everyone busied themselves for the next hour, you debated whether or not you should join that large group, by joining them you should be able to get through the next few rounds before the group, like any over large ones, implodes.
“We should probably join that group, at least at first,” Chiyshiya speaks out loud to you, which in itself is annoying but it’s double annoying because you had the same thought process as him.
Deciding to ignore him, you trail behind the large group. You planned to tag along relatively unnoticed just so you could set up a more concrete plan and people-watch. You wanted to find the damn Jack of Hearts and finish this game.
┆彡
There were only six of you left after Ippei died. He was kind enough to tell you your suit but the stress of the game had got to them and he chose to die though both you and Chishiya had told him his.
Now you were left with one person you could team up with, the last person you ever wanted but desperate times call for desperate measures.
Everyone else had fallen victim to backstabbing and manipulation that a combination of what these games purposely create along with certain personality types that thrive in the borderland.
Chishiya was one of them. He wasn’t someone who revelled in the depravity of the world but he managed to move within this world and its quirks without a problem.
You were in the cafeteria, snacking on some biscuits, wondering what the hell you were going to do. You knew that Chishiya was your only option but you could not move yourself to ask him for help you did not want to die, not whilst you were so close to the end.
Your thoughts were interrupted by someone stopping behind you,
“Heart”
Chishiya was behind you, your saving grace.
You turn your head to look at him and he gives you a shrug, “We’re in the same boat.”
He turns around and moves his hair to the side, showing you his suit. The opportunity to get payback on him after what he had done to you was staring right at you but you couldn’t do it, lying would mean his death and you could not have that on your conscience.
“Diamond”
Chishiya nods his head at you in thanks.
“I know who the Jack is. The next round is the last one” Chishiya lingers, “...I’m sorry by the way about what happened at The Beach”
“Forgiven and slightly forgotten”
Chishiya gives you one last smirk before he leaves the cafeteria.

bedtime and band aid
Chishiya x F!Reader
Haru sniffled, as she stared at the scraps on her knee that would definitely leave a little scar but nothing too serious. Chishiya knelt down opening the packet of alcohol wipes, and looked up at his daughter.
“This will sting a bit okay?” He said, and she nodded gripping onto the cat plush. Chishiya wiped the scrap, and Haru whined in pain at the burning sensation on her leg.
Chishiya reached over grabbing the small, tube of Neosporin, and gently squeezing it on her wound. Then grabbing a band aid and placing it on her knee.
“There you go,” He says, and she smiled softly looking at her knee.
“Thanks daddy,” she says, hopping off the bed. “When will mommy get home?” She asks, and Chishiya looked down at his daughter.
He knew that there was a chance that, [Y/n] could die. That’s very much a possibility, but she had too much to fight for a family, a daughter.
“Once she finished the game,” He says, and Haru looked down pouting she wanted mommy. She already missed her even thought it’s barely been an hour since she left.
Chishiya sighed, kneeling down and picking up his daughter. Her friend hand played with his light blonde hair; running her tiny fingers through it. She then gently played with his white jacket, he smiled softly looking at his daughter. Her cheeks puffed up telling him that she was upset.
Chishiya kissed her forehead letting her know; that everything will be alright. He placed her down on the ground, and just as he did.
The door to their bedroom opened. Haru smiled, and ran towards her mother. “Mommy!” Haru exclaimed, and her mother knelt down wrapping her arms around her daughter.
“I’m back, like I promised.” [Y/n] said, kissing the side of her daughters head. She then looked up and saw Chishiya. She pulled away from her daughter, and walked towards her husband.
“How hard was the game?” He asked, and she looked at him.
“Pretty hard, got nicked right here.” She says, pointing at the scar on her cheek. “Put pretty much I’m alright.” She says, and Chishiya smiled.
“Was she good?” She asked, and Haru looked down. “She, ran off I couldn’t find her for about a half an hour.” He said, and [Y/n] turned to look towards her daughter who looked down.
“Luckily, Kuina was able to find her.” He said, and he watched as his wife knelt down to Haru’s level.
She hid her face behind the plush cat. “Haru…” [Y/n] said, sternly.
“Yes, mommy.” Haru revealed her face, “I told you to listen to daddy, while I’m gone.” Haru listened to her mother and frowned.
“What if something were to happen to you. While I’m away, everytime either me or daddy are gone. We worry about you so much.” She says, and Haru pouts.
“I’m sorry mommy and daddy.” Haru says, and [Y/n] sighs, planting another kiss on her forehead.
“Alright, bedtime.” [Y/n] said, and scooping up her daughter.

Risk It All (27)- Temporary Goodbyes
Tumblr media
Genre: Chishiya X F!reader | eventual smut | angst
Warning: none for this!
A/N: ignore me spam posting these 😭
Prev | Masterlist | Next
Tumblr media
It had been four days since AN  and Kuina had arrived, you'd spent the first catching up, the second discussing the borderlands, and the third making a run to the closest store which went surprisingly well considering  Chishiya had to explain the way from home and the fourth dragging Chishiya from bed to join the land of the living once again.
His wounds had healed enough to walk around, barely....
"I said no Chishiya." You slammed the cupboard door. "It's too dangerous."
"If I don't go my visit is going to run out." He retorts. "There are no choices here."
You huff, blowing a strand of hair out of your face. "We don't even know if we need visas anymore."
"I'm not risking it and I know you won't either." You know Kuina and An can hear everything, it's not like the walls are thick but you're thankful they let you both have your privacy. "We don't know when the next game will start."
You pull out a packet of rice and pour it into a pot. "Don't use terms like 'we' when you decide this all on your own."
"I did but you shouldn't expect any different." You can practically hear him shrugging. "I have to leave today."
"You can't even walk let alone win a game!" You shout, the bag of rice ripping open and spilling everywhere. "Fuck."
"Let me help." Chishiya says, limping over to you. "Just sit do-
"Stop trying to baby me! I can handle a bag of spoilt rice Chishiya. You can't handle an adult conversation where you discuss something as important as joining another game yet you can help me clean up unimportant messes?"
He frowns. "That's not what you're mad about."
You know it's not. "Whatever just go away."
"I'm leaving to enter the game today." He reminds you.
"I know."
"Are you going to join?"
You shake your head. "I don't need to, not yet."
He nods. "How many days on your visa?"
It hadn't been something you'd begun to worry about, the time was more than enough. "I think 11"
"I'll be fine." He mumbles.
You hate that he seems to understand why you're upset. "I know you will."
"You're scared." He points out as though it's not obvious.
You forgo cleaning the rice in favour of pushing your way into his arms. "I'm terrified, what if you don't come back?"
"I will." He reassures you, his hand hesitantly brushing against your waist. "Don't think about pointless things like that, if I die you just keep going."
"Don't say stuff like that!" You smack his arm, tears threatening to fall. "You can't die Chishiya."
"Why?" He asks, pulling back a little to look at you.
The words are no more than a whisper but you knew he heard them considering how close your bodies were.  "Because I need you."
He laughs, shaking his head. "You don't need anyone, I don't need anyone, you want."
"Fine then I fucking want you okay. Is it so bad I want you to be safe?"
"I will be."
It's easy to ignore the way your nose grows stuffy as you shed a few tears. "You don't know that."
"I do."
"How." You mumble into his chest.
He looks the the ceiling as though genuinely considering his answer. "Because you don't know how to fix the power generator if it goes out and I'm pretty sure if it does you'll die which although seems great because I'll never have to hear you complain again is more trouble than it's worth considering the fact there's a great chance you'll follow me to the afterlife, which by the way I don't believe it, and you'll continue to be just as irritating there too."
You push him away in favour of going back to clean the rice. "I should have let you bleed out on the doorstep.
"You wouldn't do that." He laughs
You ask him. "Why are you so sure?"
"Because I fucking need you." He imitates you.
It's almost like a reflex when you throw the broom at him. "Fuck you."
"Can't, don't have condo-"
Kuina pushes past Chishiya, opening up the cupboard containing the canned food. "This looks fun but I'm hungry."
Chishiya glares at you whilst you hold back a laugh, your chest shaking as you try to be quiet.
"Can't wait to leave." You hear him mutter as he sits down at the table.
Kuina looks at him before pointing to the hall. "Door is right there."
"Great, now I won't get lost." He thanks sarcastically.
You watch them bicker as you tip the dirty rice into a bag, a smile on your face as you force yourself to forget the fact that in a few hours, the house that had become somewhat of a temporary home would be lacking one crucial person.
Lunch passes by as no more than a blur, the food you'd helped Kuina make sitting practically untouched on your plate by the time everyone else had finished. "You weren't hungry?" An asks, taking your plate as you'd asked.
"Not really." You force a smile. "I'm going to lay down for a little I think my head is starting to hurt."
You don't wait for a response from anyone before you pull yourself up, walking directly to the bedroom and closing the door behind you.
It turns out that forgetting Chishiya would be gone was harder to forget than you'd ever imagine.
You don't ask who it is when there's a knock on the door, your instincts know who it is before they walk inside. "You're being a crybaby."
"Fuck you." You know it is probably ineligible from the way your face is buried in the pillows that you and Chishiya share but you don't care. "Go away."
The bed dips as he sits down."I'm not going away, not until later."
"Stop making jokes."
"Look you're right, I could die but I won't and if I do you'll be okay. I told you not to fall for me, not here but you didn't listen and this is what the outcome is. I won't baby you and tell you that it's going to be fine because we both know what could happen but I'd rather not leave here with you being sad and depressed." You force yourself to look at him despite how awful you must appear.
"Because you'd struggle in the game if I was sad?"
He snorts before schooling his face when he catches your expression. "I wouldn't let it affect me so no but afterwards it would be annoying."
"If there even is an afterwards." You say aloud with it thinking.
"I haven't lost a game up to now and I won't anytime soon so stop being ridiculous and come and show me how to play this stupid card game you kept mumbling about ." He pulls the blanket off you.
You manage to smile at the way he remembered the conversation you'd had two days ago. Chishiya, still unable to get out of bed, you'd wanted to try and keep him company, but despite your 30-minute pleading session for him to let you teach him a few of your favourite card games he had refused.
"Chishiya?" You grab his hand before he opens the door.
He spins on his heel to face you. "Yeah?"
"Please don't die on me."
"I won't." He smiles, pulling the door open.
Kuina and An are already sitting around the makeshift table, the deck of cards in the middle with various snacks dotted around the floor.
You take a seat on one of the pillows, Chishiya sitting beside you. Kuina catches your eye, mouthing an "Are you okay?"
You nod with a smile, despite knowing you looked sad. You wanted to enjoy today, even if it was for a short while you could pretend like everything was normal. "Isn't it morbid playing card games considering where we are?"
You laugh at the question An asks as she shuffles the cards. "Not really, I think it's kind of ironic."
"Idiotic more like." Chishiya scoffs.
You and Kuina both roll your eyes at the comment, An seemingly unbothered as she hands you the pack of cards to which you deal out equally.  "So the name of the game is called cheat but some people call it-"
"Bullshit." An finishes.
You raise your eyebrows at her. "You know it?"
"Of course I do." She laughs. "I'm the best at it."
"I doubt it."
You both laugh, as Kuina and Chishiya stare at you both in confusion. "The game also has another name, some people refer to it as "I doubt it."
"Ohhhhh!" Kuina claps. "Now I get it."
"Okay forget this im going to sleep." Chishiya makes to stand but you pull him back down by the pocket of his pants.
"Sit and shut up." He raises his eyebrows in something akin to shock before huffing and sliding back down into his previous position. "So as I was saying, the player to the left of the dealer, which would be Kuina, starts by placing between 1-4 cards face down in a discard pile in the centre. The player must state what the cards they have placed down are but they do not have to tell the truth. They do however have to keep the value the same. For example, I could say I have the 3 kings but place down 3 of the clubs... are you all following?"
You wait for all three of them to say yes before continuing. "The other players can call "cheat" or "bullshit if they think the player is lying about the value of their cards."
"So what happens then?" Chishiya asks, looking at his cards.
"Well, I'd say Kuina, for example, were to say that if you were to call cheat you would have to show your cards to everyone. If Kuina was right you would have to pick up all the cards in the centre, then it would be Kuina's turn to go. If Kuina is wrong, the person on the left of the player, which would be me, will go next."
"And if no one calls the bullshit thing?" You almost choke at hearing Chishiya cuss but you hold it back.
"Well I would take my turn but I must declare the value of my cards to be only one up or down from what you have said yours is." You answer him before turning back to Kuina and An. "For example, Chishiya says his cards were kings. I would have to say mine are queens, kings or aces."
Kuina nods enthusiastically, smiling at her cards. Her body angled away from the rest of the table. "I get it, so how do you know who the winner is."
"The person who gets rid of all their cards first is the winner."
Chishiya hums. "Who's going first?"
"An?" You offer.
"Sure." She smiles, placing down one card. "I have the 7 of diamonds."
"Bullshit." Chishiya spits with a grin the second she finishes her sentence.
You can't stop yourself from laughing at how his face falls when An turns over her card, the 7 of diamonds. "Don't forget to pick it up."
"Go away." He huffs, picking up the card as though it's tainted.
The game passes like that, thankfully no arguments arise despite a near miss when Kuina calls Chishiya a liar because "you're a bad liar your face looks weird when you lie." Only for him to respond with "Your face looks weird all the time but I still believe you when it's necessary."
You'd had so much fun playing, the memory of your sister beside you as you silently remember the way you used to help her cheat at the game against her friends. She would always call you her eyes.
"I have to leave soon." Chishiya whispered as he pulled you aside, Kuina and An still at the table packing up the cards. "I need to be there before I miss my opportunity."
"I know but can't you stay just a little longer?" You ask, fighting the urge to lock him in the bedroom and prevent him from leaving.
"I can't risk not getting a place in the game. I'll be back but I have to leave soon."
"How soon?" You don't need him to answer, the sickening feeling in your stomach tells you what you need to know.
He looks to the floor. "In the next thirty minutes."
You bite the inside of your cheek, not wanting to cry. "Okay."
"Fuck." He huffs, grabbing your wrist. "Come with me."
You let him pull you into the bedroom, waiting until he closes the door to speak. "What's wrong?"
"I'm going to come back but if I don't the generator won't hold out with all three of you using it for an extended period of time. If it comes between saving yourself, Kuina or An you know what to choose."
You ignore the subtlety of his message. "You'll come back it doesn't matter if the generator won't work."
"I will but if I don't."
"But you will." You insist.
"I will."
"Chishiya?" You whisper, taking a step closer.
"Hmm?"
"Can I kiss you?"
He takes a step closer, closing the already small gap between you. "Are you incapable of making your own decisions?"
"No?" You shake your head.
"Then don't ask."
If you could freeze a moment in time this would be it, his hand resting against your hip, albeit awkwardly. His lips pressed against yours, your body ignoring the need for oxygen by supplementing it with a need for him.
He is the one who breaks the kiss, his eyes mapping out your face before smiling a little. "You'll be fine."
"You have to come back."
His tone was definitive. "I will. I should leave now, don't come out until I leave. I'll tell Kuina to come in here."
You so badly wanted to beg him to stay, the fear that he was walking into his death was almost crushing and despite how final the words felt you'd hate yourself forever if you missed an opportunity to say them. "I love you, please be safe."
"Tell me when this is all over." He places a light kiss on your forehead before extracting himself from your hold and leaving the room. You watch as the door closes behind him, the silence in the room is deafening without him.
You tried so hard to ignore the sound of the front door opening and closing, so so hard, but you couldn't, you couldn't stop yourself from hearing him leave nor stop the tears you'd been holding back since early morning.
He was gone and you, you were truly realising just how lonely the Borderlands were.

ᴄʜᴀᴘᴛᴇʀ ꜱɪx
-CENSUS
the air in the room is cold, removing the jacket that covered the swim-top hatter ordered you wear. the girl beside you begins breathing exercises, filling her lungs in with air before quickly exhaling a total of three times.
you attempt to raise the volume of the headset before hearing a sharp screech of connection and a string of “hello? can you hear me- hello?”’s. you simply nod as you adjust the headset and shake off your shoes. tatta sighs on the other end of the screen, and chishiya leans forward to grip onto the silver, thick mic on the panel
“tell us what you find, we can work from there. there’s too many variables on this end to figure out what the answer is”
the girl wastes no time, she deeply inhales one again before gracefully diving into the depths of the dark water. you admit you’re not as brave as her, and it takes you a second before you say ‘fuck it’ and follow after her.
the water feels strange, it makes your bones shiver- and the deeper you go, the heavier it feels against your body. if you didn’t know any better, you’d say it felt like swimming in tar.
you can barely see in the water, just shadows of kicking feet in front of you before feeling your shoulder knock into something hard. you can’t help but silently yelp out in the water- losing your precious air- but you hold onto the metal plate you slammed onto to stabilize yourself. you’re about to continue your search, until you feel indents onto the plate. you reach for the phone in your pocket, and use the countdown from 28 minutes to shine onto the dark plate.
11
there’s no way of alerting your partner that you’ve found a piece to your puzzle, she’s gone further than you’ll be able to manage- and you decide she’ll learn once she resurfaces for a breath. you turn quickly, fighting the thickness of the water to go towards the light of the opening into the room. at 27 minutes you catch a breath, and haphazardly click onto the headset- finally able to speak to your teammates.
“i found- i found something. 11, thats all it said.” the man nods, and turns to move furniture in the other room- looking amongst magazines. chishiya has a faint look of relief on his face, moving from the mic to speak to tatta. you cannot hear a single word they say- until chishiya hits the mic
“keep going.”
and you do, you dive right back in- not even bothering to get a proper breath and just begin to swim blindly. this time, you keep an arm out- searching for obstacles that will give you any clue. the girl swims past you quickly- needing to breathe badly after being underwater for over 2 minutes. you can hear her talk muffled over your headset, and hear chishiya replying. they talk for a while- and it bothers you slightly. what did she find that was so important? you came back first anyways. you ignore the questions once you feel your elbow graze a thin cut of metal. to your upper right, is a jagged edge lodged into the corner of an eroded rock- etched on-top of it is the number 6
you push yourself off the rock to gain momentum to reach the surface once again to deliver the news- feeling the bubbling air emanate from your nose the closer you get to the opening.
you grip onto the edge of the opening, just breathing, ignoring the conversation that occurs in the headset- letting your eyes focus back into the bright overhead light of the room. the girl is standing against the glass screen, locking eyes with the man as they talk about theories. you scan the room- and notice something is different. while you were gone for no more than a minute, a metal sheet in the wall has produced its own panel- assuming its for your own idea of what the code and order is.
“forget that! maybe it’s the recording studio? do they mention top artists produced here?”
“how the fuck do you expect me to know what that is? you think the gamemakers are just gonna tell us that !” the man argues with her, and she scoffs- muttering curses at him before catching you perched below.
“did you get anything ?” you just nod, shifting up before telling her ‘6’, to which she repeats in her headset.
“makes no sense to keep going back down there- i dont even know if we’re going to remember all the numbers accurately.” tatta says to chishiya, who has left the mic on. he softly nods- getting up to open a filing cabinet in the back. your hair feels as though it is going to stiffen - and you’re shivering from the cool air and the water stuck on your skin. “what are the magazines?” you speak into the headset, the men just look at you from the other end, waiting for you continue.
“are they from the same company- is it based on the issues of the magazine?” the man in the corner brings a stack of magazines to the top on the control panel, and the girl climbs ontop of the now empty headset table to see the magazines better from the other side of the glass.
he’s flipping through, at least 4- until he starts on the 5th one and stops immediately before speaking .
“different brands and topics. these three are about car sales, manufacturers, and racers. these two are social gossip ones- none of them have 11, 4, or 6 as their issue number.”
4? so thats the one she found.
you can’t help but huffing out a bit, a bit frustrated at the fact that despite it being a clubs game, its starting to feel a bit more like diamonds. you can notice chishiya focusing on a specific paragraph in one of the discarded magazines. his brows have furrowed, and his eyes are rapidly scanning the page. you know he’s finding a pattern. “chishiya”
he looks up at you, confused
“the time is running, we need to look for the other numbers.” he sighs, huffing into the mic “alright, but after you both get a number-you’re in charge of remembering it. “ “of course”
the girl and you go back in.
you pass by the number 4 plate- ignoring the way your arm begins to ache from the pressure of the water and the bruise that’s forming from before. you both go your own ways, you lean to the left side of the cove while she covers the right.
you can feel your own jolts from your body, begging for some air- but you continue to push through until you can find something. it’s until your arm comes into contact with a plate directly in front of you that you realize how deep you’ve gone. you hold onto the plate, trying to use the phone as a source of light but the light hardly hits the plate. 20 minutes left, and you put the phone back away- starting to run your fingers over the plate to feel the number.
3..? no, 8.
you can feel the obvious loop of the number and realize it is infact an 8- and immediately make your way back. you’re slightly struggling, jolting again like an injured fish as you search for the cove’s entrance before finally finding it. you break through with a gasp, throwing your headset onto the ground in front of you while you just breathe for a bit. the girl had came up before you, and she looks at you with high concern, patting your back from her place above the ground. you hoarse out an ‘8’ and she nods, relaying the message once again and you can faintly hear the yell of frustration from her headset.
you hate to admit it, but it takes you a little while to recollect yourself and tie your brain back to reality. and when you do, you make the wasted time count. your partner had went down a second time- and came back with nothing new. the only numbers you’ve found were 11, 4, 8, 6, and 12- but your counterparts are hardly figuring out the order to the 6 number code, one of which you’re missing.
you grab your headset and lunge yourself out of the water, shoving it back on and ignoring the chill of goosebumps cursing your arms as you jump onto the table against the glass, clicking onto the connection to speak on the headset microphone
“let me see the magazine articles, you guys look for other hints.” tatta switches seats with chishiya, holding the magazine shakily in front of you as you quickly skim over the details- ignoring the glares of contrasting light enveloping the pages. you dont say much- only short, curt commands of ’ turn’ and ‘next’, hoping to find a common factor.
and you think you’ve found it.
at 13 minutes, your partner is resting, rubbing her chest as she breathes in air and practices exercises before she sends herself back into the dense cove soon.
“countries.”
you say, but it doesn’t exactly resonate in your mind until a few beats later. “there’s always an article mentioning a country…”
tatta looks at you a bit confused, while chishiya just stares at you from his place- seemingly have figured it out already on his own.
“in the first two magazines- there was a writer who discussed about agricultural updates and also economics in indonesia. this one is mentioning a celebrity who talks about their home country of nigeria for at least three paragraphs. the one before that was about japan’s best international car sales and placements.”
the man who had been in his own world tunes in, practically running to the microphone “so, just look for countries? is that what you’re saying.. test our geography?”
“maybe not geography itself.. but that’s the only common factor here, if this is the only thing you guys have found then it has to be tied into this” the two young men nod, and chishiya gives you his own look of praise that makes you swell with self confidence.
“i’m going to help look for the last digit, let us know what you find”
they acknowledge your statement loosely, and you brace yourself for another encounter with the deep sea.
your partner looks at you briefly, before she dips back into the water- knowing you are to follow soon behind her.
you grip onto your headset as you kick your feet in the thick waters with newfound adrenaline at 8 minutes- ignoring the odd feeling of your sweatpants grazing against your legs. you have to run your fingers over a couple of plates- locating the 12 and 6 plates until you shuffle around and nearly head-bump into a third plate. you quickly attack the plate with your touch, feeling the tips of your fingers run over the smoothened and buffed imprint of the number 1. you’re grateful, you located the last digit for the code- but unfortunately you’re so far deep you admit you’ve forgotten which direction you came from, and you’re losing that energy. you can feel your head burn with anxiety, and try to suppress it to preserve any breaths. you flutter your eyes to gain new focus on your surroundings- just trying to poorly make out the shapes and shadows of the depths of the water. you decide to swim upwards. and follow the top of the metal cove.
it takes all your strength and self control to not give up and try to breathe under the suffocation of the water- but after 3 minutes you’re jolting again, panicking that maybe you’re following the metal hinges to the wrong place.
until you cut your knee into the number 6 plate’s sharped jagged edge- and you can finally recall the area, quickly moving in the cove to turn and see the overhead light of the recording room. you’re already bubbling and gasping before you hit the surface, feeling hot liquid come up your throat before harshly coughing up nothing but panic on the floor.
you grab for your headset, feeling it on your neck now and shakily put it up to your head and rested onto your ears
“y/n are yo-“
“its one. the last number. what are the countries?” you can’t wait to get out, you need to find the connection between them now.
they put a scribbled piece of paper to the glass wall, and your teammate helps you up to view it.
indonesia, nigeria, palestine, japan, ethiopia, brazil, india, russia, united states, mexico, italy, bangladesh.
what the hell?
none of the countries were even tied together to the same continent… and every magazine is a separate entity altogether.
it irks you how chishiya stares at you under his lashes, waiting for your move while he simply basks in the glory of observing your trial.
“what are the dates?”
the man questions you , to which you give a short reply- just eager to get it over with. “the articles! what are the dates? put them in order.” tatta and the man do as you say, and your teammate questions you after you click off the microphone on your headset
“what are you thinking? no offense but i dont exactly like the idea of us dying because its your game run” shes right, you know that even in the afterlife- you’d face eternal shame and damnation if it turned out to be your fault for causing a game over.
“hey! here quick!” the man yells into the headset- shaking off your private conversation as you both separately click the headset mic on.
you just stare at the array of paragraphs- losing yourself to the words on the pages. they were so different, talking about anything and everything that differed from the next.
“hey tatta… you read these right?” he nods and you climb back on the table. “tatta, tell me about the car sales for japan.”
“how does this even remotely help! come on a lesso-“
“sh.” chishiya’s hum of command is recognizable to you- and you can feel your ears twitch at the sound of it. the man shuts up quickly, sneering at the blonde while tatta begins his summary to you as you continue to read.
“w-well… it said that toyota continued to be the leading manufacturer… uhm somewhat over a million sales just last year here in japan. what else uhm…” he looks at his lap ,unsure “uh… like…68% of japan’s population owns a conventional vehicle? making it the reason toyota is such a-“
“wait.”
chishiyas face flickers, you can sense it even though you dont look at him
“whats indias article..?” you search for it until you find it
‘india’s homeowners census revealed that over 50% of the nation- nearly 62%- own their homes, while a staggering 13% rent!’
you run your eyes over the articles- finding that 9 of the articles all discuss one common factor
“population. its about populations.”
your teammate gasps, finally realizing it with you
“g-get rid of brazil’s article! its just a fashion recap of the show from two months ago!” she orders and the man across from her easily throws it behind them.
nigeria, japan, india, russia, united states, indonesia, bangladesh, palestine, ethiopia, and mexico are the only countries left.
“these are all in order right tatta? from when they were published?” he nods eagerly, fixing up the line-up as you humm nervously.
“india is the leading country in population- its number 1. india is the third article published… 1 is the third in the sequence.”
“united states is 3rd in world population no?” the girl says , quickly turning to you
“yes, but we didn’t find a three… so the united states isnt part of the sequence.” like clockwork, the man discards of the u.s. article, pushing the other magazines together.
“bangladesh, i remember doing a report on it for a humanities class in college” the man says, staring at the article- “its 8th in the running for population”
you continue to rack each other’s brains- putting russia, palestine, and mexico’s magazines to the side after guessing their placements.
you glance at the chicken scratch tatta managed to etch onto the paper- the code sequence there at 2minutes left on the countdown.
6 , 12 , 1 , 4 , 8 , 11
“perfect! let’s try it!” your teammate is the most excited of all, running to your control panel before you can even speak to argue with her about the choice. she enters the code, before screaming as the control panel sparks and bursts into flames on her hand- and you immediately cover her hand in the jacket you wore previously- dunking her hand into the gross water as she dryly sobs
ATTEMPT 1 USED: WRONG SEQUENCE.
ONE ATTEMPT LEFT
1 MINUTE 13 SECONDS
“you said it was right! whats wrong with you!” she screams at you with hate, and you faintly hear chishiya getting out of his chair to sit at the control panel- the other two men now gone from it as they take their frustrations and panic on the secured room
the girl shrugs your hands off her- viciously tossing her headset into the water as she loudly cries
he leans into the microphone, whispering- though you can hear his deeply raspy voice incredibly clear
“were all the numbers right?”
“of course they were right, chishiya. i saw them myself! and i triple checked the ones i couldn’t see why would it be wr-“
he cuts you off
“were they all. right? were they all…in the same way?” he stares at you, begging you to understand his desperate hint as the clock ticks.
the same way? what does that even mean
you can feel the wear and tear of this experience- your body aches, and you can tell your hair is matting. your bruise on your shoulder and cut on the knee plagues your thought process
the bruise
the cut
the only plate that stuck out to cut you
was number 6
‘were they all. right? were they all…in the same way?’
the 6… its a 9.
“oh my god!” you view the notes again before rabidly speaking. russia was the 9th in population- making it the third in the sequence-
“the code! its 12 , 1 , 9 , 4 , 8 , 11”
tatta looks at you confused, until chishiya urges him to put the code in- he clumsily hits the panel keys, entering the code at the final 42 seconds on the countdown.
you can breathe, way better than you could ever thought of even when you were nearly drowning. the voice ringing GAME CLEAR brings you joy- indescribable joy as you laugh in shock, your teammate also stunned and amazed at the congratulations by the system. she lunges at you, sobbing into a hug. the water has long stolen her scent of weed- and replaced it with a plastic-metallic smell you know you share with her. your knee buckles as you help her up, the thickened blood from your cut building up on its dried layers.
the metal door separating the rest of your crew flings open, and the man helps you with fixing her hair and clothes while she rolls her wrist over and over.
chishiya stands the furthest from you, but greets you the warmest- a smile on his face.
he can’t wait to put your skills to use in this plan.
“hey doctor-“
“don’t call me that” he says, rolling his eyes as he flips the page in his book
you just disregard his statement and continue
“would you say this is healing up pretty well?” you nearly kick your leg onto his, your now colorful knee coming into his peripheral view as he reacts with disgust. “get that away from me y/n”
“come on! seriously its super sore..” you say, fiddling with the end of the lettuce trimmed swim-skirt- and he sighs, shutting the book with a random napkin as a bookmark
he pulls the leg closer to his torso, much to your surprise, and leans to examine it stoically. you feel slightly uncomfortable- feeling his warm hands hold down your thigh and you’re secretly wondering if you should’ve shaved this morning.
“to be honest, it kind of just looks really gross.”
“thanks.”
“i mean it, it literally looks awful what are you doing to it?” you just snatch your leg from him- or at least try to. he holds the leg with random strength you didnt think this twig of a man had- his smirk adding to the damage.
“ive been wiping it with alcohol! and that shit hurts like hell! you would know!!” you successfully reunite your leg with the other, crossing your arms as chishiya reaches for his book once again
“sure, you’ll be fine then. just avoid going into the pool.”
“be serious with me chishiya,” he looks at you from the corner of his eyes “ do you honestly think id swim in that pool?” he rolls his eyes, but you continue- leaning to whisper in his ear
“do you know how many people fuck in there?? i feel like i’d be reliving my journey to the womb..” he stifles a laugh- but it transforms into a snort and he regrets reacting as a whole once the noise escapes him
“you did not-“
“shut up.”
