We went to English tea house before going to see my further at the hospital. Since Chirimas will be coming soon, this cafe supplied mincepies. But it was so popular thT we should reserve it previously. Then we reserved mince pie before goig there. Then we could have it. Actualy it was delicious. We also ordered teas. One was Nuwaraeria tea, and another was Sabarganwa milk tea. I like Nuwaraeria tea because it is greenish like Darjleeng first flush tea. They were very tasty. We also added Christmas rich cake. It was also extremely delicious. We enjoyed this tea time very much.

Determination At All Costs: Mbuluni primary school
The drive towards Kinango town in Kwale county is smooth as one cruises past the famed Shimba Hills national reserve, home to rich wildlife as a troop of  monkeys and memory of elephants bid a visitor greetings and farewell at the same time. Soon enough this is behind us, a hot scorching sun and dry rough terrain ‘officially’ ushering one to Kinango. This is among the four administrative sub counties of the Kwale county. Typically characterized by high illiteracy levels, poverty, high pupil enrolment, lack/minimal parental involvement in school affairs, teacher understaffing and inadequate teaching and learning materials. This hinders provision of quality of education in public primary schools.  Aga Khan Foundation School improvement project has trained boards of management and parents from 39 schools in the sub county in Whole school approach, a holistic model in school development.
Deep in the hinterland, we arrive at Mbuluni primary school and meet the head master and few members of the board of management. He narrates how the situation was dire in the school before the training.
"This school at the time had an enrolment of over 400 pupils from ECD to class 5 and we only had two classrooms and small office which were constructed with help from a fundraiser with the local Member of Parliament" he said. 175 level 1 and 2 pupils in ECD were studying under a mango tree with one teacher while class 1 and 2 occupied the nearby dispensary in the tiny doctor consulting rooms while 120 class 3 pupils occupied the new apostolic church (donated by community). The rain and scorching sun demotivated learners to a great extent and absenteeism was high. In addition, pupils did not have toilets and the only available teachers block was shared which meant kids got sick often. Teachers lacked skills in developing teaching and learning materials
Thomas approached his colleagues from Chirima cha Uha and Gulanze primary schools who had received funds from Kinango constituency development fund (CDF) to build classrooms earlier. He used his knowledge from a Diploma course undertaken and reviewed the copies at the schools to  develop 10 proposals to companies and non-profits including Mombasa cement, Bamburi cement, Mabati Rolling Mills, Kenya Airways, Ministry of Education, Plan International, Kenya Ports Authority, Embassy of Japan, Danish Verkaat Foundation and individual philanthropists from United Kingdom.
From left: Construction of 4 classrooms funded by Kenya ports authority and right, completed classroom block from Embassy of Japan funds worth 8 Million Kshs.
He sought the addresses from the Post Office located in Kinango and internet when accessible. With these proposals sent out, they became hopeful only to get regret and waiting letters. The BOM chairperson, Mr Mwanza Mwaruwa added that they had to get parents involved by sending children home thus they agreed to contribute 500 ksh on a monthly basis.
Sentiments echoed by the treasurer Mrs. Jane Ngawa, “It was a challenge as parents would be forced to contribute but they now see the benefits”. She said.
Mbuluni school received funding to put up 4 toilets for boys and a water tank reservoir from Plan International, Constituency Development Fund committee bought 50 desks and additional 30 by individual philanthropists in United Kingdom. A whooping 8 Million grant was awarded by Embassy of Japan who had to verify the situation prior through a representative visit.
They have built 6 new classrooms and renovated 5, bought 120 desks and solar panels (600 watts). A 6 Million Kenya Shillings grant by Kenya Ports Authority is currently being used to construct 4 new classrooms. The community has been impressed by the changes and is more active in the schools development process.
The journey is not yet over as Mr Kusala Mohamed the deputy head master states. "We are in need of personnel and are developing proposals to build kitchen, library, computer room, dormitory , fence and borehole."
He adds, “It is crucial that the problems are identified as a team as more ideas are shared in the process. WSA is powerful as children even had views and a say on how their school will be run and developed”.
For the community here, it's one step at a time towards fulfillment of a dream: a progressive institution of learning.
