Pavel adds, “I’m a graduate of the Law Faculty of the Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia, Fairleigh Dickinson University in the USA, and the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School. Such an international educational background helped me get attorney licenses in the Russian Federation, Canada, and the UAE, giving me exclusive practice rights within the GCC.”
Moreover, Pavel Gerasimov is licensed as a pilot and has a PPL license. His professional success compliments this one obsession to learn and to share knowledge. He is an expert acknowledged by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), who has pleaded victims’ rights in several spectacular air crash cases, such as Tu-154 in Sochi, A-321 in Egypt, SSJ-100 at Moscow Sheremetyevo Airport, and Boeing-737 Max in Addis Ababa. Our tailored solutions meet your specific needs, allowing you to focus on your business goals while we expertly manage the process.”
On Being A Successful Leader
An effective leader can play a pivotal role in the success of a business. Pavel’s company currently has a market share of about 10% in Dubai. Pavel Gerasimov believes that great leadership occurs if one can excel at communicating. And, they need to be adept at planning, problem-solving, and delegating, alongside being capable of navigating any challenges that arise.
Exceptional leaders have some intangible X-factor that sets them apart. For Pavel Gerasimov , several traits explain this difference. But first and foremost, it is about authenticity- instead of being one’s best self, most people lead with a pseudo-representative persona, which will inspire distrust and discomfort in followers. He adds, “Again, leaders need to be better than average in having the self-awareness to create conditions for their success. Curiosity, adopting an ‘outside-in’ perspective, aligns with being open to external stakeholder viewpoints. Analytical ability to break down complex issues and find new, sometimes innovative solutions, is critical. For leaders, it is critical in this fast-changing landscape, quite frankly, driven by emerging technology and the changing expectations of stakeholders.”
Being creative and leveraging the diversity of thought will allow leaders to tap into this adjacent possibility and generate groundbreaking ideas. Effective leaders have also to negotiate their way through ambiguity. They take on a systems mindset to reconcile conflicting priorities. The quality of resilience is also key: knowing the situations are fluid and taking the right time to recalculate when things do not work out as planned. At the final moment, empathy is what stands out in establishing relationships, trust, and an emotional bond with team members. “You need to be able to step into the shoes of your team members, understand what matters to them, what their priorities are, and identify common ground,” says Pavel.
Furthermore, developing emotional intelligence gives a deeper appreciation of the complex challenges others are working through, and helps the leader foster a more supportive and nurturing environment. All these qualities enable leaders to inspire, motivate, and drive performance in this increasingly fast-changing business environment.
Words Of Wisdom For Beginners
Addressing the beginners, Pavel Gerasimov says, “Learn to get on with people you wouldn’t go to lunch with. You don’t have to be best friends but you need to be polite. When someone says something insulting, treat it as intel, not gospel. Form your own opinions about the people you meet. If a colleague is gossiping about you about another colleague, they will be gossiping about you to someone else. Remember, don’t attribute to malice what can be explained by incompetence or a genuine mistake.”

Mission rejected
- a short story by keinjournalist -
This is the story of a man who fully understood the meaning of the word soldier. He should be released from this body, because only the soul survives. And only if the soul wants it, then the body survives. But at what price?
Germany in 2024, the Bundeswehr has bought new F-35 fighter jets and is offering a pilot training program. Young Stephan signs up and is accepted. What nobody knew, except for a few close friends, is that Stephan has spent every cent on books since high school. His library receipt was record-breaking. In a small company building belonging to one of his friend's grandfathers, which was no longer in use, he learned everything about modern aircraft engines. In 2025, the year his training began, he knew everything about engines. In front of the instructors, however, he pretended that he was still learning. The friends were given an enormous boost of motivation by their colleague's success. The years passed and little by little his friends brought up the idea of the magnetic field engine.
As early as 2020 he joined an underground blog on the dark web that specialized in military knowledge and offered all kinds of information about 5th, 6th and even 7th generation fighter aircraft. The latter, however, was considered crazy and everyone who wrote about it was called a lateral thinker, although hardly anyone had checked the plans that could be viewed under this thread. All kinds of emotional outbursts in Chinese, Russian and Hindi could be read there.
Stephan wrote in his own subblog of the Hyperuranion blog about his fantasies of a community of all earthly warriors. An international association of the armed forces to bury the dispute once and for all. What he did not know, and neither did the others who faithfully read his essays, was how much attention this site was getting. Only one of the website operators had once taken a look at how many views the texts were getting. But he doesn't tell anyone. He also had no idea who was behind the number. Pretty much all the generals of well-known countries were there. And numerous (more powerful than anyone thought) paramilitaries, independent individuals and collectives.
The day came when Stephan had his first mission in Syria. There he was supposed to "neutralize a target". (A mission led by the American government.) In secret, however, he had finished the magnetic field engine that he had developed up to that point. Without attracting the attention of the German army, he installed it in the plane.
And so he flew "the new bird" over Syria. As soon as he arrived at the location, the commanders radioed confirmation.
The answer came as a surprise:
"Mission rejected!"
And so it happened, and all readers gradually began to switch off the security systems of the major cities. The F-35 flew over all the major cities in the world and everyone looked up to him. Loud cheering broke out. Parties were thrown. The excitement was high everywhere. Everyone expected the plane to be over their city soon.
One of the smartest hackers of the time, named Michael, made sure that there was not a soul in the building. A fake message here, a public viewing event there, financed by cryptocurrencies, so that no one was left in the building. He even managed to distract the caretaker when the time came.
The last city was Dubai.
And the powerful weapon found its purpose.
Found its worthy owner.
Hubris fell and became the grave of Mars.

CJ current events 5sep24 - part II b/c tumblr stinks
I'm sure it's a page turner
On Tuesday, The Tennessee Star and Editor-in-Chief Michael Patrick Leahy released 90 pages of writings left by Covenant School killer Audrey Elizabeth Hale. The Covenant Killer’s 2023 Journal, which was handwritten by Hale between January and March of 2023, can be downloaded here.*** In various entries that referenced her mental health, Hale confirmed her desire to transition genders, revealed a purported autism diagnosis, claimed she was not “bi-polar,” and wrote that she once called a phone number associated with a Suicide Prevention Helpline five times in one day. Hale also referenced her therapist in a possible allusion to her status as a 22-year mental health patient at Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC), where police documents obtained by The Star reveal she was twice evaluated for commitment.***
Hale apparently used a symbol to mark or authenticate pages in the notebook.
It looks like a Maltese Cross inside an octagon.

Gholam Reza Goodarzi, also known as Ron Goodarzi, 76, a dual U.S. and Iranian citizen who resides in Porter, Texas, made his initial appearance today in the Southern District of Texas following his arrest at the George Bush International Airport on Aug. 30. Goodarzi is charged by criminal complaint with smuggling parts and components used in the production of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), as well as other manned aircraft, from the United States to Iran.*** According to court documents, from December 1, 2020, through July 5, Goodarzi illegally exported aircraft-related parts, in addition to oil and drilling components, to Iran. As alleged, Goodarzi purchased U.S.-origin aircraft components from U.S.-based suppliers and then exported them to Iran – typically through Dubai, UAE. He also traveled to and from Iran multiple times per year and concealed aircraft parts and other items in his checked luggage. Goodarzi exchanged multiple emails with suppliers and customers, acknowledging that parts could not be shipped to Iran because of sanctions. The complaint alleges that on several occasions, authorities searched Goodarzi’s luggage and found numerous aircraft parts and components hidden within articles of clothing. Some of the items had characteristics consistent with parts for the production of UAVs, as well as parts with electrical motor and generator applications. Goodarzi does not have the required licenses to export such items to sanctioned countries, including Iran, according to the complaint. If convicted, he faces a penalty of up to 10 years in prison for the charge of smuggling goods and a possible $250,000 maximum fine. ***

Bari's bunch - Oliver Wiseman
On Tuesday, New York governor Kathy Hochul’s former deputy chief of staff was charged with spying for the Chinese government. Linda Sun, 40, along with her husband Chris Hu, 41, was allegedly paid millions of dollars to wield her influence to the Chinese Communist Party’s advantage. Meanwhile, a report released by Graphika, a social network analysis company, uncovered links between the CCP and a cross-platform “spamouflage” operation, with fake social media accounts posing as U.S. nationals and advocacy groups designed to wreak havoc ahead of the election.
Since denying the results of the Venezuelan election in July and refusing to step down, Nicolás Maduro has prosecuted a brutal crackdown on dissent. He escalated his effort to snuff out all opposition this week by issuing an arrest warrant for Edmundo González, the opposition candidate who won a clear majority of votes. González has been charged with falsifying documents, conspiracy, and usurpation.
NYPD sources estimate that three in four of the people arrested in Midtown Manhattan for violent crimes are migrants. And thanks to New York’s status as a sanctuary city, local police cannot coordinate with ICE when suspects are believed to have entered the U.S. illegally. ***

Maybe this time they'll keep him in custody
BESSEMER, Ala. (WBRC) - A man charged in a recent triple homicide in Bessemer was out on bond for the deadly shooting of a 15-year-old girl in 2022. Raukeem Bernard Cunningham told police at that time he and Janiyah Simmons were playfighting with a loaded gun when it went off and shot Simmons, a freshman at Wenonah High School. Cunningham was 18 and charged with manslaughter. Police say Cunningham stayed on the scene when that shooting happened. Cunningham is charged with capital murder of two or more people after a shooting Aug. 30 around 11:45 p.m. at the Citgo gas station on 4th Ave North in Bessemer. The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office has identified the victims as 20-year-old Ronald Demetrius Dixon, Jr., 41-year-old Wesley Fowler Jr. and 25-year-old Christopher Dajuan Eddins. All three men were from Bessemer. According to Detective Justin Burmeister, the shooting started in the gas station’s parking lot and proceeded inside the store. Burmeister said the victims ran inside and were chased by the suspects.***

"he was on our radar"
The FBI has confirmed that the alleged shooter who killed two students and two teachers and wounded nine others at a Georgia high school Wednesday has been on its radar as a possible threat since last year. In a joint statement, the FBI's Atlanta field office and Jackson County Sheriff's Office said the agency's National Threat Operations Center received an anonymous tip about threats posted online regarding a possible school shooting in May 2023. The agencies said that the threats contained images of guns. *** "The Jackson County Sheriffs’ Office located a possible subject, a 13-year-old male, and interviewed him and his father," the FBI said. "The father stated he had hunting guns in the house, but the subject did not have unsupervised access to them."***
Some high schools put students on safety plans. Students on the plan must check with the principal or the resource officer upon entering the campus.

It's the second-ever criminal trial of a sitting president's son, and the second for Hunter Biden this year. Hunter Biden, 54, was indicted in December on three felony and six misdemeanor counts alleging that he failed to pay his taxes during a period when, he has said, he was in the throes of drug addiction, as well as when he got sober. The indictment says that “rather than pay his taxes, the Defendant spent millions of dollars on an extravagant lifestyle.” *** https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/politics-news/jury-selection-hunter-biden-tax-trial-los-angeles-rcna169560

Person 1 did not perform any work after being formally placed on payroll in spring 2018 and had no work-related communication with the Defendant after she was placed on payroll. Cultural Diversity in Dubai Preschools: Celebrating and Integrating Multiculturalism
Dubai is renowned for its cosmopolitan lifestyle, drawing people from all corners of the globe. This melting pot of cultures is vividly reflected in the city’s educational institutions, especially its preschools. Cultural diversity in Dubai preschools is not just a byproduct of the city’s international demographic; it is a celebrated and integral part of the educational experience. Here’s a look at how preschools in Dubai embrace and integrate cultural diversity into their programs.
Multicultural Curriculum
Many preschools in Dubai adopt a multicultural curriculum that highlights and respects the various cultures represented by their students. Lessons and activities are designed to introduce children to different traditions, languages, and customs. For instance, a classroom might celebrate Diwali, Chinese New Year, and Ramadan, each with equal enthusiasm and educational content. By doing so, children learn to appreciate and respect cultural differences from an early age.
Language Inclusion
Given the multitude of nationalities in Dubai, preschools often have children who speak a variety of languages. Many institutions encourage bilingualism and multilingualism by offering language classes or incorporating multiple languages into daily activities. For example, a preschool might have a “language of the week” where children learn basic greetings and phrases in a different language, fostering an environment of linguistic diversity.
Celebrating Cultural Festivals
One of the most visible ways preschools in Dubai celebrate diversity is through the recognition and celebration of cultural festivals. Schools host events and activities around various cultural holidays, inviting parents and families to participate and share their traditions. During these celebrations, children might wear traditional attire, sample foods from different cultures, and engage in related arts and crafts. These festivities provide a hands-on learning experience and allow children to share and take pride in their cultural heritage.
Diverse Teaching Staff
Preschools in Dubai often employ a diverse teaching staff to reflect the multicultural student body. Teachers from different backgrounds bring unique perspectives and teaching methods to the classroom, enriching the learning experience. This diversity among staff members helps children see representation in authority figures and role models from various cultures, promoting inclusivity and respect.
Culturally Diverse Learning Materials
The materials used in classrooms, such as books, music, and visual aids, are often selected to reflect the diversity of the student population. Storybooks featuring characters from different ethnic backgrounds, songs in various languages, and maps and globes highlighting the home countries of students contribute to an inclusive learning environment. These resources help children see their own cultures represented and valued within the educational setting.
Inclusive Play and Social Activities
Play is a crucial part of early childhood education, and in Dubai preschools, playtime often incorporates elements of cultural diversity. Group activities and games are designed to be inclusive, teaching children about teamwork and cooperation across cultural lines. Through role-playing, puppet shows, and other interactive activities, children learn about different cultures in a fun and engaging way.
Parental Involvement
Many Dubai preschools actively involve parents in the cultural education process. Schools might invite parents to share stories, traditional music, or cultural artifacts from their home countries. This involvement not only enriches the educational content but also strengthens the connection between home and school, creating a community feel that celebrates diversity.
Culturally Sensitive Policies
Preschools in Dubai are mindful of cultural sensitivities and ensure their policies and practices are inclusive. This might include accommodating dietary restrictions, respecting religious practices, and creating a respectful environment for all cultural norms. By being sensitive to the needs of all students, preschools foster a sense of belonging and security.
Cultural diversity in Dubai preschools is celebrated through a variety of thoughtful and inclusive practices. From multicultural curriculums and diverse teaching staff to the celebration of cultural festivals and parental involvement, these institutions are committed to fostering an environment of respect and appreciation for all cultures. This approach not only enriches the educational experience but also prepares children to thrive in a globalized world where understanding and respecting cultural diversity is paramount. Dubai preschools are shining examples of how early education can embrace and celebrate the rich tapestry of cultures that make up our world.

Airbus A320 Pilots.
Want to earn $300,000 tax free? Try flying a plane in China
Chinese airlines are offering huge pay packages to tempt foreign pilots as demand for air travel balloons.
Some carriers are advertising salaries of more than $300,000 a year -- and they say they'll cover the tax bill, too.
"There's not enough pilots in the world to fill the demand," said Dave Ross, the CEO of Wasinc International, a firm that finds pilots for Chinese airlines. "This is why the pay keeps going higher."
China will need between 4,000 and 5,000 new airline pilots every year for the next two decades, analysts estimate. Chinese airlines are among the fastest growing on the planet -- at home and abroad -- and they're the biggest buyers of jetliners from Airbus(EADSF) and Boeing (BA).
Training schools in China aren't churning out enough pilots to keep up with the industry's meteoric growth, and there's an acute shortage of experienced captains.
The airlines' rich offers have attracted industry veterans from all around the globe.
"Before I was flying anywhere from 80-100 hours a month. Here, I only fly 50 for pretty much three times the pay," said Jeff Graham. He left a job with cargo airline Southern Air in San Antonio, Texas, last year to work for a carrier in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen.
"There were a couple of other options in Asia, but the pay -- the best rate now -- is in China," said Fernando, who declined to be identified by his full name because he didn't have permission from the airline to speak publicly. He and his wife moved to Chengdu in August, and he recently finished his training.
Western pilots have long chased the financial incentives that come with hot demand for their skills and experience.

Veteran aviators who once flew for U.S. and European airlines upped sticks previously for Middle Eastern carriers. Some of those same pilots are now headed from Dubai to China, according to one Boeing 777 pilot who has followed the money east.
Multiple ads from Chinese airlines on recruitment sites like Wasinc offer monthly salaries of more than $25,000 (with tax paid) for captains.
"In China, pilots are always in short supply," said Guo Jing, a spokesperson for the airline. "And we offer high salaries because if we don't, nobody will come."
The sums Chengdu and others are willing to pay compare with an average monthly salary of $17,400 for the most senior pilots at major U.S. carriers like United (UAL) and Delta(DAL), according to aviation consultancy Kit Darby.

Some top U.S. airlines have recently granted big pay raises as part of new labor agreements, and others are under pressure to do the same. Pilots at some regional carriers can earn less than $25,000 per year, according to the Air Line Pilots Association, International.
Low pay and changes in rules governing pilot flight hours have caused an acute pilot shortage among those smaller carriers in the U.S.
Despite the head-turning sums, Chinese airlines are still struggling to find enough foreign pilots to match their shiny new jet fleets.
"Their view is, 'We're paying very good money, keep sending us more candidates,'" said Liz Loveridge, North East Asia director for Rishworth Aviation, which recruits pilots. "But we may have a limited number of candidates who will be interested."
Issues such as China's heavy bureaucracy and nasty pollution have prompted some potential candidates to think twice, according to recruiters.
Related: Singapore Airlines shops for world's longest jet
And it can be a long haul from being offered a job to getting the first pay check. The process of getting a Chinese pilot's license -- from putting in the application, traveling to China for a written test and exhaustive medical evaluations, and then returning once more for a test flight -- took Graham about a year, he says.
Such hurdles test how much foreign pilots are willing to go through to land fat salaries in China.
"If you're coming here strictly for a pay check, you're probably not going to be here very long," said Doug Ward, an American who's been flying planes in China for more than seven years. He also acts as a representative for the pilots Wasinc has recruited.
Both he and Graham say they've enjoyed the experience of living in a different culture and the broader horizons it offers for their children.
"We've only been here a year, but if it continues with this path, I'd like to stay as long as I could," Graham said. "I wouldn't mind staying 10 to 12 years."

Future Careers May Be Launched By A Legal Degree From The Uk
Why should Indian overseas aspirants choose to study Law in the UK? At which stage should they seek such opportunities?
A growing number of Indian students, who fall into two primary categories, want to study law in the UK. First, students with an Indian law degree may apply to study for a master's degree in law (LLM). The UK's one-year PG program, which is shorter than India's typical two-year llm in uk program, gives students access to a variety of global options.
Second, students may arrive in the llm university in uk right out of high school to get a three-year LLB UG degree in law. This is especially enticing because it is feasible to earn a fast-track law degree at a young age, which again opens up some foreign prospects. Several UK colleges, including the University of Birmingham, provide undergraduate law degrees that are acknowledged by the Bar Council of India as the first stage towards being qualified to practice law in India. Students would still need to fulfill a few additional prerequisites and pass the Indian Bar Exam, though.
Which fundamental legal concepts and useful abilities are taught to students at your university?
The University of Birmingham offers a wide selection of law courses that cover both the fundamentals of the subject and several other, more specialised topics. International Commercial Law, Environmental Law, Human Rights, International Law, and Law & Technology are some of the areas where the Law School excels academically.
To help students gain the practical skills needed to succeed as lawyers or in other professional fields, the university also places a high focus on extracurricular activities. Students can engage in endeavours like internships, pro bono work, and advocacy through our Centre for Professional Legal Education. Additionally, because the Law School has an international concentration, we allow all students to partake in free international summer schools that concentrate on legal practice in several overseas locations, including India, Singapore, Canada, and Dubai.
How does a UK law degree benefit students' resumes globally?
Although the value of a UK law degree varies depending on the curriculum, both postgraduate and undergraduate programs provide substantial value for students. The key draw is the high calibre of UK law schools and the widespread application of English law, which makes an English legal degree an excellent springboard for future jobs. Additionally, all students who get a degree in the UK are eligible to apply for a two-year UK work visa after they graduate, giving them the option to "stay back" and pursue a career in the country while acquiring additional beneficial global experience.
Most students who choose to pursue a master's degree in the UK do so to obtain a highly regarded international credential that will expand their options for employment in the UK, India, or other nations. Students typically qualify in India based on their undergraduate degree rather than their UK master's degree because the latter does not in and of itself qualify students to practice there.
Has the Fall intake across streams registered pre-Covid numbers at your university and elsewhere? Will international student mobility be on the rise?
International student mobility in the UK has significantly increased over the past year, and it is expected to continue to rise and surpass pre-Covid numbers. Despite Covid's difficulties, the University of Birmingham has been providing students with a complete campus experience since September 2021. Students are grateful for the chance to once again attend classes in person and have expressed their appreciation for this.
Numerous Indians travel to the UK to study law each year. What were the statistics over the past two years, despite the effects of COVID and the reintroduction of work visas that followed?
In the next two years, the number of Indian students studying law in the UK is expected to surpass that of Chinese students, who are now the largest international student population in the country. The reintroduction of post-study work visas in 2020 appears to be a particular draw, with almost one-third of applications for these visas in 2022 coming from India originally. Students so benefit from not only the academic experience of attending a top UK university but also the potential to advance their careers by gaining foreign job experience both during and after their studies.

191009 New K-pop Band SuperM: ‘We Don’t Want to Step on Other Groups to Get to the Top’
With K-pop firmly entrenched in the mainstream, SuperM say it’s time to start raising the bar
The well-coiffed guys from the new K-pop supergroup, SuperM, are sitting around a conference room at the Capitol Records building in Los Angeles, and feeling like they may have left something on the table.
Two days earlier, the seven-piece unit — put together using members from four established K-pop boy bands — had shut down an intersection in the heart of Hollywood and made their live debut before more than 5,000 frenzied fans, some of whom had lined up for days just to get a prime spot to see the guys perform.
For SuperM, the outdoor show — which was also streamed live worldwide on YouTube — served as their official group debut as well, with the boy band finally being introduced to the world after months of secrecy.
“Going in front of our fans and performing as SuperM was nerve-wracking, and it’s not something we usually feel because we’ve all been in this industry for a while now,” says Kai, the pretty, pouty-mouthed singer who was chosen to join SuperM from the band EXO. “There were some members that felt like maybe we could’ve done better with this or stronger with that, but it’s okay,” he says, smiling. “More than anything, I was just proud that we could finally show everyone what we’ve been preparing for.”
SuperM is the latest creation of Korean management company, SM Entertainment (the band’s name is not exactly subtle). Founded in 1995 by Lee Soo-man, a man so famous in Korea he’s just known as “Mr. Lee,” SM is regarded as one of the pioneers of the global K-pop movement, having first brought Korean artists to North America in the early 2000s at the height of the teen pop craze.
SuperM is the company’s latest attempt to make a dent in the U.S. market. After years of breaking all sorts of records in Asia but remaining relatively unknown in the States, the crossover success of bands like BTS and Blackpink have given entertainment companies like SM a renewed interest in reaching the international market, with the U.S. as a pivotal launching pad.
For SuperM, it wasn’t about starting from scratch, but rather starting from the top. SuperM culled its members from some of SM’s most popular groups, who collectively have sold more than 14 million adjusted albums combined, and amassed nearly four billion views of their music videos online. SuperM’s fans lovingly refer to them as “the Avengers of K-pop,” stemming from the belief that the group features the most talented and popular members from each of the individual bands.
Baekhyun and Kai are from EXO, a stylish and well-packaged boy band that, as of 2018, had actually sold more records than BTS in Korea (the release of BTS’ Map of the Soul: Persona this past April have tipped the scales back in the latter group’s favor). At 27, Baekhyun is the oldest member of SuperM, and has unofficially acquired the title of group leader.
Taemin, the second oldest member at 26, is from SHINee, considered one of the veterans of K-pop, after having debuted in 2008. The group made news in 2017 after founding member, Jonghyun, died from an apparent suicide, which sparked a debate over working conditions and unreasonably high expectations for these young performers, many of whom are pulled from school to begin “training” for their debut.
The last four members of SuperM were culled from subunits of the massive 21-person K-pop group, NCT (Mr. Lee calls them the first “unlimited” boy band, with a constantly rotating roster of new members). Taeyong and Mark are from NCT 127, and Ten and Lucas are from NCT’s Chinese subset, WayV.
The idea for an all-star group was first discussed last year, though the seven members didn’t actually come together to record until earlier this spring. While the guys had met before — SM organizes an annual “SM Town” concert tour, similar to say, when Diddy took his Bad Boy artists on the road — they had never actually worked together until SuperM was formed.
The group’s debut EP, The 1st Mini Album, hit stores last week. The five-song set opens with lead single, “Jopping,” a turbo-charged track whose name comes from a combination of the words, “jumping” and “popping” (a publicist sighed that the name was both crazy yet catchy at the same time). The song mixes hip-hop with EDM, with the members trading verses in both English and Korean. The video for “Jopping,” meantime, was filmed in Dubai over the summer and has already amassed more than 22 million views online. Fueled by massive buzz for the song and album, SuperM announced this week that they will be hitting the road for a North American tour, kicking off November 11th in Fort Worth, Texas.
While BTS have blasted into the mainstream, with number one albums, appearances on all the late-night talk shows and even Grammy buzz, the guys in SuperM are motivated to find success on their own terms.
“Yes, the competition exists and we can’t ignore that,” says Taemin, “but we don’t want to step on other groups to get to the top. We want to stand alone as a group and bring something fresh and new to this K-pop scene.”
To that end, the group has been working on carving out a more signature sound for their debut LP, which will still sit comfortably in the hip-hop/pop/R&B arena, but also see them weaving in and out of different genres within a single song. While other groups — such as Blackpink and BTS — primarily perform in Korean, SuperM could also be releasing more English language tracks. (Though Mark was born in Canada and speaks fluent English, the band’s publicist confirms the rest of the group’s members have been taking English lessons.)
They’ve been doing their homework too, listening to the radio while they’re in Los Angeles and streaming an eclectic mix of artists like H.E.R., Ella Mai, Daniel Caesar and Billie Eilish (“Let’s get that collabo!” Taemin hollers).
And while Korean management companies are notorious for controlling their groups’ images and keeping their artists on a short leash (I once arrived to meet EXO in Seoul and was told I couldn’t interview the guys in person because they didn’t have their makeup on), from this perspective, SuperM feels a lot… looser.
On this recent swing through L.A., the young men reveal that their first stop after landing at LAX wasn’t straight to their hotel, but rather to In-N-Out. Though they’ve booked dinners in Malibu, the members also rave about the traditional Korean tofu stew at BCD Tofu House, a 24-hour Southern California chain of cheap eats (“It’s honestly better than Korea,” Taeyong says). During the interview, the guys are decked out in leather jackets and oversized sweats, sipping on iced coffees from Starbucks, and fidgeting with their phones like any other twenty-something, as they dish about trying to take a group vacation after their tour is over. They travel with a translator, but all of them try valiantly to respond to questions in English before they crumble in laughter when they lose their words. If their original groups gave them a crash course in making it in the music business, it seems SuperM will give these guys a chance to be themselves — and in doing so, a chance to grow.
“If I said I didn’t feel any pressure that would be a lie,” says Kai. “We all come from successful, established careers, but in a way, we are still unknowns, at least when it comes to this formation. But with that pressure comes this new level of excitement,” he continues, “because there’s so much more we can try and do, and the possibilities are endless.”
“There are a lot of groups out there and a lot of competition,” Taeyong admits, “but our goal is to make K-pop shine even brighter. The spirit of competition is not necessarily bad, because it pushes us to want to put out better things.”
Kai is more specific: “SuperM is here to level up the K-pop genre,” he asserts. “We are ready for K-pop to start raising the bar.”

The picture shown is my favourite airlines when travelling. Every summer up until a couple of years ago I would fly on Emirates airlines to go visit my family in Dubai and also Pakistan. These trips were all possible due to the invention of the plane and its evolution. Transportation in present times has made the world more connected than ever before and is a major part of globalization. One aspect that I personally experienced which is due to transportation is that I could maintain a relationship with my uncle, aunt and grandparents living in the Middle East. One hundred years ago, if I lived in Canada and my family in the Middle East, there would be no way I could just easily fly over there every summer in 16 hours. It would have taken me about a month in travel. The methods of being able to travel the Earth in 2019 creates opportunities that were never imaginable in terms of economy, culture and education. The economy is greatly benefited; for example, using very large cargo ships for trading decreases the cost of transporting goods between countries. This is just one way, but it has created a global economy, in the sense that goods and services from around the world can be accessible to anyone, anywhere. Another way that transportation and globalization coincide is in regards to culture. By immigration, culture is diffusing into places it has never originally been. For example, when families from Pakistan move to Canada, they bring their “cultural suitcase”, which could be their ability to cook traditional meals, cultural clothing attires and the spread of different faiths depending on their religion. Evidence of the spread of culture are places such as Chinatown in Canada, which has all the culture of the Chinese people in a certain area of space. Clearly, culture has become international and is no longer only present in its place of origin. This is all part of globalization, and was only possible due to transportation. One more opportunity which has become available due to transportation is education. McMaster University, an institution widely recognized as top level education, welcomed about 1500 international students to the school in 2018. People are now able to attend the top schools even if they live on the other side of the planet. Clearly, transportation in present times has led to interconnections like never before, which has created opportunities like never before. With technology advancing and new ideas in transportation arising, who knows what kind of opportunities the future holds!
