Trump Cautions China Could Face Consequences for Virus Outbreak
On Saturday, President Donald Trump warned China that if it was "knowingly responsible" for the novel virus outbreak it will face repercussions, as he intensified Beijing's criticism of its treatment of the outbreak During a daily White House briefing, Mr. Trump said, “It could have been stopped in China before it started and it wasn’t, and the whole world is suffering because of it.” It was the latest U.S. volley in a word war between the two largest economies in the world, indicating heightened friction in relationships at a time when according to experts an unprecedented level of cooperation and collaboration is entailed to cope with the devastating virus outbreak. “If it was a mistake, a mistake is a mistake. But if they were knowingly responsible, yeah, I mean, then sure there should be consequences,” Trump stated. He has not commented on what steps the U.S. might take. Mr. Donald Trump and senior aides have censured China of losing accountability since the coronavirus broke out in its city of Wuhan late last year. He suspended World Health Organization funding this week and accused it of being "China-centric." Washington and Beijing have frequently sparred over the virus in public. Trump initially lavished praise for his statement on China and his counterpart Xi Jinping. However, he and other senior officials have referred to it as the "Chinese virus," and have ramped up their rhetoric in recent days. They also vigorously denied earlier attempts by some Chinese officials to blame the US military for the sources of the virus.

Trump's domestic critics argue that although China performed badly at the outset and still needs to be honest about what happened, he is now trying to use Beijing to help redirect his own response from the shortcomings and take an edge of developing anit-China emotions among some voters for his 2020 re-election bid. White House officials are, however, at the same time aware of the possible backlash if things get too high. The United States relies heavily on China for personal protective equipment which American medical workers urgently need and Trump is also keen to keep track of a hard-won trade agreement. Trump said the relationship between the U.S. and China had been good until recently, citing a multi-billion agricultural deal intended to defuse a brutal trade war. “But then all of a sudden you hear about this,” he stated. Chinese were “embarrassed” he said, and the question was whether what happened with the virus outbreak was “a mistake that got out of control, or was it done deliberately?” “There’s a big difference between those two,” he added. Wuhan Lab Trump also raised concerns about a Wuhan virology laboratory that the coronavirus was likely created as part of China's attempt to demonstrate its ability to recognize and combat viruses. Trump has said his government is trying to conclude whether the virus originated from a Chinese laboratory. As of February, the Chinese state-sponsored Wuhan Institute of Virology debunked claims that the virus might have been synthesized artificially in one of its laboratories or perhaps escaped from such a facility. Wandering off the coronavirus issue, Trump also used the White House briefing to take a swing at supposed Democratic presidential nominee – Joe Biden – and his long record as senator and prior vice president on China. Mr. Trump while focusing on his own confrontational trade terms toward China and using his nickname “Sleepy Joe” for his rival, stated if Biden wins the White House that China and the rest of countries “will take our country.” Trump also raised doubts again regarding China's death rate, which was updated on Friday. China stated 1,300 people died of the virus outbreak in Wuhan were not counted, but dismissed accusations of a cover-up. The United States has the highest number of recorded cases of coronavirus in the world by far, with more than 720,000 infections and more than 37,000 deaths. Chin’s denies It Concealed the Virus Death Toll in Wuhan
A spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry stated that some medical institutes were overloaded with patients during the early stages of the outbreak and had little link with the disease prevention and control system, but "no concealing existed" on the part of death toll. On Friday, China's Foreign Ministry said Wuhan's upward review of coronavirus cases and deaths was a matter of historical and public duty, denying claims that it was a cover-up. The "timely" revision was necessary for scientific decision-making, as well as being a "response to social issues," Zhao Lijian, Foreign Ministry spokesperson, said. He said some medical facilities were stunned with patients during the early stages of the outbreak and had failed to communicate with the network of disease prevention and control. "Missed and mistaken reporting, objectively, did occur, but no concealing existed or was allowed." Issues have long swirled around the accuracy of Chinese case reporting, with Wuhan in January going in particular several days without reporting new cases or death toll. Many U.S. officials, including President Trump, flirted with an unfounded hypothesis that a Chinese lab had loosened the latest coronavirus to the world that permitted it to escape. There is already an emerging scientific consensus. Yet, scientists generally believe study of the genome of the new coronavirus rules out the possibility of it being created by humans, as indicated by some conspiracy theories.

The U.S. worked mainly to "confuse the public, divert attention and shirk accountability." Zhao – spokesperson – in Beijing, said. "We urge the US to stop political manipulation, do their part, and focus more on how to overcome the virus and boost the economy as soon as possible," he stated. The new coronavirus causes mild to moderate symptoms for most people, such as fever and cough which will clear up in two to three weeks. But the virus is extremely infectious, and can spread through those with noticeable signs that are mild or not. This can cause more serious illness, including pneumonia, which may lead to death for others, particularly older adults and those with established health problems.
