Tendai “Baba” Maraire of Chimurenga Renaissance and Shabazz Palaces, 2014
Bumbershoot, Seattle
If I’m going to shoot a show the music always comes first, if I’m not into the music then it’s just not worth my time. It’s really a bonus if the artist puts on a great show, and whether Tandai Maraire is performing with Chimurenga Renaissance or Shabazz Palaces you’re guaranteed to get a great performance and some really eye popping costume choices.

Shabazz Palaces- Quazarz: Born on a Gangster Star / Quazarz vs. The Jealous Machines (2017)

On July 14th,Shabazz Palacesare set to issue not one, but two albums through Sub Pop,Quazarz: Born on a Gangster StarandQuazarz vs. The Jealous Machines. In anticipation, both are streaming early on NPR: Gangster Star here and The Jealous Machines here.
The 12-trackGangster Staris a concept album about an alienbeing sent toAmurderca to chronicle and explore as a musical emissary. In the character, Quazarz's, own words:
I, Quazarz,Born On A Gangster Star, son only of Barbara Dream Caster and Reginald The Dark Hoper he who rides on light dreamer of the seventh dream and kissed eternal by Awetthe Sun Scented who far from home I found my same self differents in those constellies that be Dai at my weap-side immediate and all us Water Guild affiliates who revelries in the futures passed recordings and ceremonies flexing resplendent in the Paradise Sportif armor raising these musics a joy/cry that way into these aquadescent diamondized ethers of the Migosphere here on Drake world. Welcome To Quazarz.
Shabazz Palaces' third full-length to date, Gangster Starwas recorded and mixed by Erik Blood at Protect and Exalt Labs in Seattle, with production coming from Knife Knights (Blood alongside Ishmael Butler). Special guest collaborators on the record includeThundercat, The Strokes'Julian Casablancas,Gamble and Huff, Darrius Willrich, Sunny Levine, Ahmir, Jon Kirby, and more.
The Jealous Machines, meanwhile, represents the extra-spatial twin ofGangster Star andserves to elaborate on the mythology of its namesake character. Per a press release:
A wave warrior wielding his sonic sword. Posted to the turnt-up states of Amurderca here on the Gangster Star to chronicle, explore and enjoy as a musical emissary. He discovers a world where humankind's relationship with their tech-devices has become weirdly sensual, seducing a sedentary seamlessness with humans, while capturing and incarcerating the results of their imagination. Quazarz vs The Jealous Machines finds our protagonist with his dazzling cohorts rising a collective Nah to the device and the guilds that proliferate them.
The Jealous Machines features adifferent lineup of collaborators. Production duties were left to Palaceer Lazaro and Sunny Levine and the album was mixed by Levine and Kamal Humphrey of Kamal's House Studio. Among the LP's contributors: Fly Guy Dai of Chimurenga Renaissance, The Shogun Shot, Laz, and Purple Tape Nate, among others.

Remembering Grace, a Girl with a Gun : After spending the night listening to Girlz with Gunz, I spent the day remembering Grace Maseva. She was always cheerful, always smiling, and always making bawdy jokes. For her, sexual organs were a normal part of life. A person must pee and play with something. That’s just how things are; a tree has fruit, a baboon has that prideful butt, we have our special business. She would laugh and laugh. She was also a great cook. Always did the greens just right. She also fought in the Second Chimurenga, the war that ended white rule in Zimbabwe.
Grace was a trained killer. Grace, who survived a brutal war but not the spread of AIDS, could clean, assemble, and load an AK-47. She knew when to duck for cover, when to charge, and when to fire her weapon. There were many women like her in the War of Independence, and their sacrifice, dedication, and general brilliance is celebrated in Girlz with Gunz. This is the spirit of the work. The collaboration between two very talented American-based African musicians, Tendai Maraire and Hussein Kalonji (aka Chimurenga Renaissance), translates the fire of the revolutionary African woman into a music that’s richly and thickly innovative. It is fitting indeed that the most experimental, dazzling, and even dangerous work by Chimurenga Renaissance, a duo that is a part of the trans-African Black Constellation (Shabazz Palaces, THEESatisfaction, Erik Blood), is inspired by women like my cousin, Grace. She was once a girl with a gun. She was trained to kill her oppressors. She wanted to build and live in a better world. Peace always has a price. --- Charles Tonderai Mudede “Merging hip hop and African instrumentation into something mesmeric and true.” ---The Quietus “Speaks to Zimbabwe’s history (“chimurenga” translates to “struggle”), but this is classic message rap that spans regionally.” ---Pitchfork Chimurenga Renaissance features Tendai Maraire, from the widely acclaimed Seattle group Shabazz Palaces, one of the leaders of hip hop’s “audacious progressive fringe”(New York Times). Tendai hails from a renowned Zimbabwean musical lineage. His father, Abraham Dumisani Maraire, moved to the United States in the late 60’s and helped create a flourishing Zimbabwean music scene in the Pacific Northwest. Tendai’s partner in Chimurenga Renaissance, guitarist Hussein Kalonji, is a first generation Congolese American born in Washington DC. His father, Raymond “Braynck” Kalonji, is a Congolese guitar legend credited with pioneering the Rumba/Soukouss sound. Girlz with Gunz is a 27-minute, 11-song EP (vinyl/download). It is Chimurenga Renaissance’s first release for Glitterbeat Records. A full-length album will follow in the autumn of 2016. Otherworldly sonics, Zimbabwean beats, Congolese guitar ambiance, political heat. Directed by Daniel Kaufman Cinematography by Jordan Black

Shabazz Palaces Announce Second New Album, Share Video for New Song “30 Clip Extension”: Watch
Spoil me - I'm a DJ and I'm cute!
Last month, Shabazz Palaces announced a new album called Quazarz: Born on a Gangster Star, due out July 14 via Sub Pop. Now, they’ve announced another album to be released that same day. This one is called Quazarz vs. The Jealous Machines and, like its “extra-spatial twin” record, it tells the story of Quazarz, a “sentient being from somewhere else.” According to a press release, Quazarz vs. The Jealous Machines “finds our protagonist with his dazzling cohorts rising a collective Nah to the device and the guilds that proliferate them.” Below, watch the music video (directed by Cristina T. Bercovitz and clipping.’s Jonathan Snipes) for a new song from the record, “30 Clip Extension.” Scroll down for the Quazarz vs. The Jealous Machines tracklist (which includes a song called “Love in the time of Kanye”) and artwork.
Quazars vs. The Jealous Machines is also available as a limited-edition illustrated album, drawn by cartoonist Joshua Ray Stephens. The 32-page book is out August 18, in collaboration with Fantagraphics Books. Check out the cover art below, along with the artwork for “30 Clip Extension.”
Quazarz: Born on a Gangster Star features the Strokes’ Julian Casblanacas, Thundercat, Gamble and Huff, and more. Previously, Shabazz Palaces shared that LP’s “Shine a Light.”
