They silly chimeras
I spent an entire day mindlessly drawing a bunch of these things for no reason
I have like way more and most of the rest is gay
They don’t rlly have lore but like I made smt up
Chosen is the largest one and dark is the smallest
Dark has like a hive mind thing where he controls people n stuff
Yeah they’re literally the more feral virus designs. I’m sorry 😞

Backbeard - Day 61
Race: Foul
Alignment: Dark-Chaos
July 1st, 2024
Tumblr media
ZEHAHAHA- wait, no L. Unfortunate. Today's Demon of the Day is, strangely, a modern version of a classic type of monster, and one that originates from a very specific source- a manga. Yep, we have another one that leads you in circles in research, though in this case, it's because it might not even exist. Enter Backbeard, a yōkai that originates from GeGeGe no Kitaro. Before I start digging into what little there is to offer, I'd like to give a huge thank you to @kanekocribs 's fantastic post about this subject, which also had a great delve into Porewit, which you all know my very... intense feelings about.
For the most part, Backbeard's origin is incredibly hard to trace; the purported origin of the yōkai in the book "100 Ghosts and Hauntings of the World" seems to have just been made up by the SMT fandom wiki, as the closest thing I can even trace to that name is the series of woodblock prints from the 1830's called "One Hundred Ghost Stories" which can be further traced back to a set of parlor games called "Hyakumonogatari Kaidankai." In these sources, though, I can't find any reference to Backbeard or even just a single-eyed entity, which appears to be the primary trait for a lot of depictions. Even going back and trying to find anything related to an August 1965 edition of Shonen Book, which the wiki page cites...
Sends you right back to GeGeGe no Kitaro. Please get some sources cited Megaten wiki. Regardless, though, what on earth is GeGeGe no Kitaro even about? It's about yōkai, of course! In the story, Backbeard appears as a major antagonist, leading scores of the 'Western Yōkai,' effectively meaning groups of classical horror movie monsters such as the Wolfman, Dracula, Witches, etc. He's seen as the main antagonist of several of the stories, but in most adaptations he's cut for more personal antagonists. I'm not well versed in GeGeGe no Kitaro, especially because I haven't read it, but the design says all it really needs to say.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Later on, it's attributed and believed that Backbeard may have taken inspiration from several sources conglomerating together, though I could not find a source for the LIFE OF ME regarding the first one. TW for body horror and bugs below, but some people purport that Backbeard may have been based on the 'Eye Bugs' from the aforementioned magazine '100 Ghosts and Hauntings of the World,' though again, I have no idea where this picture comes from, and searching is turning up diddly squat. The second picture, though, I can attest to existing- a piece of art called the Shinjuku Phantom Chimera by Masatoshi Naitō.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ironically, I pulled this from another blog! Special thanks as well to @littleeyesofpallas for this post about Bleach that ALSO goes into Backbeard. Finally, we can trace the inspiration for Backbeard and Shinjuku Phantom Chimera all the way back to the 1800's, wherein we have this painting by French artist Odilon Redon, simply called Eye Balloon.
Tumblr media
So, cool! What do I do with this? I have no idea! There isn't really a moral at the end of this, or any grand message, and my hours of digging have dealt me many, many headaches with not much else in return. I guess, at the very least, I satisfied my curiosity, and also found out that Bleach has a GeGeGe no Kitaro reference in it.

From @thedragonqueen1998
Oh, so many options! Though i'm a sucker for epic and scary creatures, so a lion or a dragon would be awesome. XD
From @mysticalbasementwitch
A QUIMERA!!!!
Alrighty then XD
Maria had heard of the tall tales some of the men whisper during the night. These lands have been corrupted by infidels. Monsters roam the wilderness, attacking the children of God.
The Devil has sent demons to assist their enemies.
Maria never paid it any attention.
They were fighting men who believed in their cause.
They were not any different. They were blinded by their loyalty, attacking in the name of their ruler and their god.
It was just that Maria believed their cause was the right one.
But this…
This creature…
A lion with the head of a curled horn goat and a snake for a tail.
“A demon!” One of them shouted.
“It’s a chimera.” Robert de Sablé announced as he unsheathed his sword, “A guard dog from the ancient days.”
Ancient days?
Maria knew they were secretly digging through one of the oldest ‘ruins’ in Jerusalem to look for something of grave importance.
She had assumed it was a holy artifact.
But a chimera?
She had heard of it. One of the soldiers who knew how to read told them stories from faraway, of pagan gods and mythical beings.
The head and body of a lion, another head akin to a goat, and a snake for a tail.
This was truly a chimera.
But the snake… looked strange.
Its head was more angular than the snakes Maria had seen before.
“Steady yourself! We shall vanquish this blight in our God’s name!”
Robert de Sablé’s words brought order and determination to all the men.
Maria pushed away all her questions and hesitation.
Robert de Sablé was with them.
They were the righteous ones.
Because of that, they would prevail.
.
.
The tail was not a snake at all.
The smell of burning bodies reminded Maria of meat cooking on open fire.
She wanted to hurl.
They had tried to corner it, surround it with their superior number.
They didn’t realize it was not some wild beast.
But an intelligent monster who waited until they were all close enough for it to take them all out.
Light started to appear from underneath the tail’s scales.
And then…
From its open mouth spew fire as white as the sun and hotter than anything Maria had ever felt. She had been at the back and managed to jump away from the flames before it could get her.
Those closest to the monster…
They all screamed as they burned.
Even when they try to roll around the ground, the fire did not go out.
It consumed them until they fell silent.
“Retreat!” Robert de Sablé ordered and the knights started to back away. The monster turned its gaze at Robert de Sablé and roared.
The roar echoed all around them and Maria noticed that the snake also had its mouth open as if it was roaring as well.
The monster charged them.
No.
It was chasing after Robert de Sablé.
“No!” Maria shouted as she stood her ground between the monster and Robert de Sablé, sword blocking the monster’s claws.
The goat head turned to face her and their eyes met.
She couldn’t move.
Her body felt like thunder was coursing all around it, keeping her still.
The tail lifted above them and opened its mouth.
Nononono.
She felt the hot air breezing past her as the tail shoot out that demonic white flame above her head.
She heard the screams.
She recognized Robert de Sablé’s voice in agony.
And then…
Silence.
The monster pushed her away and she fell on the ground.
Her body trembled as she tried to force herself to move, the thunder still in her veins making it harder.
“I’ll kill you!” She spat at the monster that was walking away from the massacre.
The goat head turned to face her.
“I’ll hunt you down!” She proclaimed in anger and frustration.
The monster walked deeper into the tunnel until darkness had consumed its entire form.
Not once did it stop.
Why?
Why did it spare her?
Why?

All these ‘Desmond as …’ asks with him as dangerous animals. This would be his reaction to a Templar trying to move him from somewhere. Or an Assassin he didn’t like…
=====================================
short snippet by teecup
I made it vague what kind of animal/creature Desmond in this one so if you want him to be Mr. Tunnel Fluffball, go ahead XD
.
.
“My lord… the excavation team cannot proceed with digging deeper underneath the temple.”
Maria stood quietly as Robert glared at the poor messenger who had the misfortune of informing Robert of the unfortunate news.
“What’s the problem now? We already paid off everyone to let us dig in peace and to stay quiet. This should not have gotten to Saladin’s ears.” Robert growled.
“It’s not… it’s not the Saracens, sire.” The poor messenger gripped his hat tight enough to crumple it as he tried to explain, “They… they say that the only route we can take is blocked.”
“Blocked?”
“Yes, sire.”
“And they can’t just dig around the blockage?”
“No, sire.” The poor messenger shook his head and Maria wondered if the messenger was already saying a silent prayer in fear, “They say that this is the only route. Any other places would weaken the foundation and we risk the temple collapsing above us.”
Robert was not a brute.
He was quite a reasonable man.
A wise man.
But this entire expedition had put a strain on him. They do not have complete control over Jerusalem so simply being here, digging underneath Solomon’s Temple was a danger all by itself.
But he had just received word that left him in a very bad mood and everyone was walking lightly, hoping they wouldn’t be the one to step on broken glass.
“And we can’t just… unblock it?”
The messenger hesitated.
“What is blocking it?” Robert asked with a frown.
“I… I believe it is better if you come see for yourself, sire.”
With that ominous words, the messenger led them deeper into the tunnel they had been digging. Maria did not know just how deep Robert wishes to dig nor did she know what they were digging this much more.
All Robert said was that a treasure that can change the entire world nestled deep underground.
Maria believed that Robert was talking about a holy artifact, perhaps the grail or the ark.
Something that will show to everyone that this Holy War is necessary.
That they are doing what is right and what God has intended.
As they reached the end of tunnel, Maria froze.
As the entire tunnel echoed the roar of the beast impending their holy mission.

To the anon that sent me an ask about asking my thoughts about the tv show, Im so sorry but something happened and I think it got deleted 😭 But dw I would still answer it here-
So this would be a critism post and I want to make it clear that everyone is free to reblog and comment their thoughts freely, while being kind. Critism is valid and its not rude, but any bad comments or hateful remarks to any actor, especially child actors, would be deleted. I dont like blocking so dont make me please!
Okay to start, I would be so honest and say I did not find the show successful and I did not like it. I would explain all the reasons, but did it make me feel nostalgia a bit? Yes it did. Did it make me cry at the end? Yes :) I would add pros at the end. But first:
Cgi was really bad, I mean that claiming scene would be a laughing stock in a few years. Chimera? Nope- Medusa's hair also looked better in that movie in 2010. Also they avoided showing Grover's legs so much, also didn't even show us riptide's change...They got 15M per episode and if these are the results, then it is a problem. Background of Percy and Ares's fight- so so greenscreen. I wish Disney can take things seriously.
Lighting was so dark, especially for the lighting thief. Which was such a humor filled book and it was way too colorful. Why make it all so dark and lifeless?
Also humor? Way too low for pjo. "But we are not reading Percy's mind!" Yet, there were so many jokes in the books that could have been add, but they didn't. Yes there are some good jokes (pinecone fate) but to the standart, I expected to laugh way more. Its pjo!
Changes? Well to be honest I am a person who keeps book and show separate, I dont think they are the same at all. So I dont complain about the changes at much. But most of the changes were pointless to me and so many things left unsaid. I wish they didn't make Gabe way too soft. Children's show, yes. But then again, what would you do for later seasons if they cant even show Crusty's dead. Sally's real reason to marry Gabe never get explained, why? 4 pearls, why? Missing deadline? Totally pointless. Not mentioning Riptide's name? Chiron might have say it. Love tunnel? Now its a long one. Rick explained they couldn't do spiders and its hilarious, you gotta do sea monsters man- And instead of a chance to see an actual comedy: live on Olympus and Annabeth losing her shit. We get to see such a early scene of Percabeth drama. Why changing one of the funniest scene in the books to drama? You needed more edits for view or smt? Hephaestus falling over to the speech of friendship was nothing but cringe to me. Moving on, Thalia's acting to Annabeth. Why she is not nice to her and Annabeth had to earn her love. The point was Thalia to remember Jason and taking Annabeth under her wings immediatly bcs of it. Medusa's scene- Instead of us laughing to trio's silly behaviours and falling to her trap like little kids would, we get to hear a monster-hero talk. Yay another speech! Ovid's side of the story also bothered me. Greek mythology, why adding Ovid? Just us to sympatize with Medusa. Lotus Casino scene- We could have watch them have fun and going crazy but noo- they had do add more drama with Hermes. Did not see the point of his appearing either. Why is he there? I wanted to see them being children...And wanted to see the magic of the place!
Now if I move to characters, Percy's I know it all side is just annoying and adds no suspense to the viewers. What's the point if he knows everything already? "But his mom taught him!" But guys, remember, the whole point of pjo was: us to learn with Percy! We were learning the Greek myths with Percy, who is new to the world. They go somewhere and Percy immediatly: "You are Crusty, my mom told stories about you!" 😑 What a relief then! You tell us. Percy's sudden bravery at the end? Dude, he has 5 books for that.
Annabeth turning to a stoic child soldier? Suddenly goody-two shoes? Where are her emotions? Her fears? Her flaws? Her fricking love of architecture? She doesnt need to know everything to be smart girl. She had ADHD, she is 12! Ofc she was supposed to fall in traps. We should have watch her blushing as Luke talks, getting all wet by Percy in the toilet, she was supposed to our little girl. She is not just a badass queen yet, please. Give her personality back. Why she only smiled once at the end of the series? And not having a childhood, not even watched a movie? You guys cant be serious- She grew up in chb! She picked up strawberries, she played games and she watched movies when she was little, remember? She was not in legion... She is one of the most emotional characters, should we remind this to Rick and writers? She cries, she has feeling! Dam she was crying when they left Cerberus! She was a trouble-maker, she stole clothes, remember? Her portrayal was awful...
And about the Gods- Just..."He is trying to make them look awful at the beginning" Then why the hell it was only Athena? Almost turning her to second Zeus- Are you kidding me? You make her suddenly a child killer, when in the books she was nothing like that. Why making her worse, when other gods(Poseidon, Hermes, Hephaestus,Dionysus,Ares,Hades) seem way more human and nicer? You cant tell me he tries to make them worse when they are portrayed like that! No sir- Hephaestus is nice enough to release Percy after a friendship speech. Poseidon is suddenly a perfect dad, he is not sorry that Percy is born. Ares is just a dumb twitter bully, where in the books he was threating them to no end. And fricking Hades?! I am sorry but Hades like that- He should have been scary. But no, he is just a lonely cool guy. I thought he softened after Nico. Cant wait for the development now...
Other than that, one of my most important things: vibe. Sorry...Like I said, it was way too boring for pjo. Even that horrible movies had more vibe! Gimme the vibe!
Pacing? Has a problem and I hope they fix it. Episodes being too short? Also another issue.
Now for the chb, I was hoping to see more activity. Why the camp is not full of noisy kids running around, playing hide and seek like in the books, training wild around the areas, camfire and silly songs? Where are our children screaming and being ADHD demigods? Instead they play chess in the cabin- Please, give more life to chb.
Finally, for the things I liked:
Riptide song!!! That song is my favourite thing in the whole show- Like its soo good.
Seeing Sally's struggle to raise Percy. Also a plus for me. Because I was curious. Also adding Poseidon to the scene was okay. I loved that parts.
Young Percy did awesome and he was such a good actor :)
Percy's dreams were good, I loved seeing them. Congrats! Andd, child accurate cast. It was important. But I wish they hurry so then we wont have it anymore 😭
That was it! Like I said, I find it a bad show, as a fan of 12 years. I waited this for so many years. I was dreaming this. But sorry, bad show is a bad show. At least it did give me some nostalgia and it did make me cry at the end :) I hope they improve because it would suck if they get a cancel before season 5. The bad thing is, I feel they knew we pjo fandom wanted a show for years. And they knew we would eat the crumbs. Its just not fair, you know. They would like it anyway, type. They are not taking it as seriously as they should. With that budget, look at other shows with that budget. I know, its still a kids' show. But I dont think its an excuse for them to upset the fans who waited this long...
Thanks for the ask anon! And like I said, feel free to add your thoughts :)

Digimon Survive-esque evolutions for some of the spinoff protags
With the idea of the SMT characters fighting alongside their Digimon, they evolve based on the main attack type you have been using since their last form. These also correspond to the vaccine, data, virus trio of types.
The DS duo
Tumblr media
Honestly I started with Manticoremon then went backwards. It’s both demonic and angelic which I thought worked well. I liked the idea of going with a chimera route considering he absorbs the other Bels. Machinedramon is a combination of a bunch of ultimate Digimon. Shakamon is a jogress here. I didn’t use Chimeramon mostly because I used Milleniumon for another character.
Tumblr media
I kinda already used Lunamon😅. So I used Apollomon’s line instead. I didn’t use Gargomon because it felt very-dex. Of course I had to use Baihumon because of the anime.
DDS (I didn’t know what to do with Sera😅)
Tumblr media
Seraph’s starting element is ice so I went with that. I kinda wanted to use Shivamon but I couldn’t think of any way to transition it to that well. So I did a route focusing on the more demonic side to his character. I wish there were more IceDevimon related evolutions. There’s just not a lot of demonic ice Digimon. The white sprite is Omnimon Merciful Mode who I can’t explain for spoilery reasons.
The Persona trio (Sorry I haven’t played the first two)
I decided to have them represent data-vaccine-virus. I didn’t think the other way would work with persona really so I made it more like survive and based on if you make positive dialogue choices and do social links. I imagine the more you choose asshole options and act anti-social you would get the negative ones which is ironically just like Survive.
Tumblr media
The idea with going with Dorumon is because it has a death evolution where it evolves through dying. For obvious reasons I thought this was thematic (with death being a big part of P3). Its attacks are also fire based. The first white sprite is Jesmon GX and the other is Death X mon.
Tumblr media
I gave him Pulsemon because he becomes a lightning god. Yeah, it’s that simple. Unfortunately that led to me having to reuse some Digimon but it’s kinda unavoidable in some cases wherein there’s not many alternatives especially when it comes to the Ultras. As for going with AxeKnightmon it was more based on his personality in Xros Wars. I feel like the dark version of a persona protagonist would be a lot like him. Also I think the Pulsemon dark evo is best saved for a certain someone. I’m imagining Marie has Fenrirloogamon which he jogresses his Digimon with.
Tumblr media
I had to use Jokermon my hands were tied. I thought Beezlemon fits well because he’s also edgy and likes using guns. Also despite being a demon lord it’s often used as an anti-hero and has a big rebel vibe. Lucemon isn’t really an ultra. In this case it’s acting as Satanel with being his true mega. Considering Satan mode is supposed to be uncontrollable I thought that fit more for the negative one. The negative one was very hard to do.
For mainline:

Let us see the terror of heaven
I was thinking a while ago today about the way angels are consistently designed in Shin Megami Tensei vs the way the Law alignment is sort of steadily portrayed in later games. It's a weird trip but hopefully where I'm going will become clear.
Most of Shin Megami Tensei's angels actually hue fairly close to the "traditional" image of angels, as fair-looking winged humans. We see this for instance in Shin Megami Tensei's Angel.
Tumblr media
In nearly all of the angels in the Tenshi clan:
Tumblr media
And of course, the Four Archangels/Seraphs/Heralds. Let's just use Uriel as an example here:
Tumblr media
There's also Haniel and Kazfiel whose designs both follow traditional Christian depictions of seraphs. We'll bring up Haniel's art here:
Tumblr media
But then we get to Shin Megami Tensei II where we really start to see the "Biblically accurate angels" trope emerge in earnest, where we see the more human/Hellenistic-looking angels alongside some pretty eldritch entities in the Daitenshi clan. For example, Tzaphkiel:
Tumblr media
Or how about Ophanim, which seems to be based around Ezekiel's vision of the cherubim:
Tumblr media
And then of course there's SMT 2's Satan:
Tumblr media
Devil Summoner and Soul Hackers can be seen as developing the inhuman aesthetic of SMT's angels as extending from the "Biblically accurate angel" trope. Let's start with the Tenshi clan in Devil Summoner:
Tumblr media
And some of the Daitenshi:
Tumblr media
Then Soul Hacker's Tenshi:
Tumblr media
And Daitenshi:
Tumblr media
With Shin Megami Tensei IV it seems that one of the guest artists, Keita Amemiya, took the inhuman direction for angel design to the nth degree in terms of his approach to demon design in general as reflecting the idea of angels and demons as artificial beings.
Tumblr media
At this point I should get to where I'm going here. For a while, at least a decade ago, I might have favoured the idea of the angels as strictly inhuman, or even artifical, possibly to convey the externality and alienness of the repression of the order of God. Keita Amemiya seemed to really lean on that idea, though the designs were certainly rather poorly executed at least for the Four Heralds. But thinking about it, I think the older designs for the Four Seraphs appeal to me for more than just being the classic designs from SMT 1 and 2.
Even though the "Biblically accurate" design direction is very suitably weird both for SMT's context and the linking of the strange and alien to representation of dreadful aspects of divine awe, I find that the more humanlike representation of angels in the context of the Law alignment works better for what, in my mind, I prefer to see. To understand where I'm going, let's look at SMT IV and Apocalypse. Here, the Law alignment is much as it is in SMT I and II, in that it can understood in terms of a single-minded devotion to the order of God, and to the extent that the forces of Law are ruthless in their actions, willing even to wipe out all of Tokyo in order to preserve the Eastern Kingdom of Mikado. In Apocalypse, you see YHVH's "true form" as a monstrous chimera the likes of which, as I remember Eirikr noting, you would probably see as the formulaic final boss of literally any JRPG.
Tumblr media
To my mind, it serves to very obviously signify YHVH as unambiguously evil, which, oddly for SMT, is represented as similarly unambiguously demonic. Of course it might be argued that the conceits of Sethian "Gnosticism" are also in play. I think that the opposite approach would be better. SMT IV's approach seems to tie the order of God and the atrocity that the forces of Law undertake to uphold as, all along, the manifestation of a demonic will. But the better idea for me is that all of the same atrocity is done not by monsters but by the traditional figures of light.
Every scheme to dominate the universe, and every massacre that follows to support it, every terror that befalls mankind for its perceived failure, I prefer that we see all of it under the auspice of the traditional figures of light. That would be a far more fitting adage of the inversion that SMT is known for. As Valerio Mattioli said of Rome as portrayed by Luchino Visconti, hell lies in the celestial vaults. And what better way to illustrate that then all of the violence and terror of Law being the instrument not of monstrous chimeras but of celestial form. Of a "beauty" that hides unfathomable violence within itself. And I don't want SMT to be the only place where you can find this idea. Oh no no no I think more media should play with that idea, more art should go all in on this kind of aesthetic-moral inversion.
Update: it occurred to me that I've forgotten something. I forgot to talk about SMT V.
When it comes to SMTV, we see echoes of SMTIV Apocalypse's handling of Law and the violence of order, in that it both reasserts its treatment of that as the affect of an actually demonic will and presents Abdiel's desire to reassert God's order as a plunge to towards the demonic. Hence you see the angel Abdiel transform from sort of an angelic Princess Padme in gold armour into an actual fallen angel, who even gets reclassed as the only Law-aligned member of the Fallen clan.
Tumblr media
Not to mention her attempt to become a Nahobino resulting in a transformation into a giant demon centaur whose design seems to recall Sirene's fusion with Kaim in Devilman.
Tumblr media
Of course, in context this is all supposed to emerge from the premise of God's death, Abdiel's denial of that death, and the resulting desperation to restore order. But, again, that desire as strictly the affect of the classically demonic to me misses the point. Yet, given the obvious resonances with Nocturne, where three of the main characters merge with their demonic sponsors, it's worth pointing to an obvious contrast: Baal Avatar.
Tumblr media
And moreso, the fact that before you see Baal Avatar you witness Chiaki slaughter the Manikins, ramble about how the strong deserve to crush the weak, and then in a flash of light three out of the four archangels (namely Raphael, Gabriel, and Uriel) appear as her allies, which you fight.
youtube
Now there's a setting where the representatives of Social Darwinist violence and atrocity also make no bones about what guides them: the idea that they're making the world beautiful and promoting the ultimate good. Their radiant appearance is not to be understood as a deception covering up some inner demonic nature or demonomania but instead only reflects their seemingly divine conceit. It's not only that they believe they are paragons of virtue. Everything they do, they do as figures of light. And you, a monster among monsters, a cursed being in the world of demons, might oppose them and might just stop them if you choose to. It's really hard to think of anything else that has that angle. It's also somewhat concerning to think that future games might miss the mark.
The development exemplified by Abdiel's transformation into literally a fallen angel ultimately lends not only to certain ideas about the hope that there might be something "unambiguously good" about Law, but also the idea that all the bad things about it are all about concert with the demonic, which is ultimately familiar to the conceit that all of the negative aspects of Christianity are simply the manifestations of a falsification of Christianity, that the "real" blasphemers, heretics, and demons are actually just Christian fundamentalists. But I'm not interested in that idea. I'm interested in the worst that humanity has to offer being contained in its loftiest aspirations of order and in turn represented in the figures of light, because I'm interested in the idea that it is in the name of "the Good" that atrocity always manifests, and for which we cast it into a shadow of the human, in evil.
What we are striving to forget is that the worst deeds in the world are always either utterly human or surely the work of God. Nothing demonic could come close. So let us see more inversion that reflects that insight. The insight that, so far, SMT is among the few media to portray, let alone portray as brilliantly as it often has.

For the ask game!
I'll be predictable and ask you about Micolash and Edgar: 1, 12, and 25
Thanks Karnaca for the questions about the dear boys of course! x) asks list
1. Why do you like or dislike this character?
I think I kinda like both? In general. It's very rare when I just hate a character. They are not my favs for sure and smt Micolash scare me with all the horrible things he probably did (so I can dislike him for that) but they are both very intriguing characters.
12. What's a headcanon you have for this character?
Hm good question 🤔 I was gonna say a lot but it's not like big things so what to choose hm?
For Micolash I will say that our dear Willem pay in part for his tuition? He's like a distant relatives by alliance of him or smt. He also spend lot of time with Rom & Laurence as children!
He had a (black) cat too! Pets aren't suppose to be allowed but if you say it belong to the director and his family it work XD (at first I would have said he might like dogs and crows but they are typically hunter's animals and he made chimera with it so now I don't think he liked them a lol XD)
Now for Edgar well he was an orphaned at the choir I supposed. He was friend with the young Amelia, Yurie, Ioselka and maybe even Henriett as a kid. He became very smart and very talented.
25. What was your first impression of this character? How about now?
I found Micolash very cool! Very intriguing character. Pretty crazy but pretty cool XD Then I saw how people online were crazy for him kinda 😅 but now it's better too.
At first I was like wtf if this guy? Micolash simp the character lol? But now I think he's quite interesting because does his loyalty lie with the choir or Mensis now... what's his purpose? So many intriguing possibilities.

One of my absolute favorite types of characters is ones who are utterly convinced that they are awful, evil people who should not be allowed to walk free. Just gigantic messes of self-loathing, guys who are convinced they are villains, that their inherent nature is evil, and that they can never overcome it. Bonus points if they're not actually bad people at all and are fighting a chimera in their head
The example that's always on my mind is Dirk Strider Homestuck). God, what an overdramatic goober. I love him to bits
In SMT, this is the vibe I get from Heat in the Vritra boss fight. I LOVE how he riles up the party with his in-battle dialogue, tries to fan their rage ("I killed your leader!! Aren't you angry? Where's your hatred?"), all because his overwhelming guilt's convinced him he deserves to die, and he knows the others wouldn't just kill him if he didn't force their hand.
If anyone knows more of these types of guys... pray tell please hahaha

pretty certain these have all been done before but I wanted to round out the weird subdivision thing I did with this massive convoluted family tree --We did Tatzelwurm, we did Hydra, we did Cockatrice and Griffin... So here's the Basilisk end of things.
BASILISK, it's a basilisk. you know how that goes. Rooster Snake with the killing or paralyzing gaze and all that.
ALLIGATIGER seemingly random combination of animals, but on instinct I would've guessed some sort of GelShocker monster from kamen Rider, as their whole gimmick was mashing up two random animals, but there was never any kind of Wanitora monster of the week. (they did have a kind of horrifying centipede-tiger guy tho)
AAMON[アーマーン] different from AMON[アモン], seems to be the same crocodile monster featured in the SMT series where it was localized as AMMUT[アーマーン] depite the phonetics for both ti and the wild arms version clearly being AAMAAN. But it seems to check out that this is some kind of common Japanese localization error(?) in the name AMMIT/AHEMAIT, of the Egyptian goddess described as being part crocodile, lion, and hippo.(head to tail)
CHIMERA GEO just another of the elemental CHIMERA quartet from WA3. I get the intention of making it a composite of land beasts but I feel like crocodiles are more strongly associated with water, which makes it kinda odd. To be fair the CHIMERA FLAY also had weird air elemental associations that contradicted its fire theme as well.

I've seen some people mention that Nasu doesn't like the musou style Extella has.
So if the Extra storyline continues I wonder if they'll change genre again.
After playing SMT V and open world exploration game like that where you explore the Moon Cell as Hakuno would kick ass That and a open world game would definitely expand upon Seraph much better, since Extella is limited to like, what, 5 maps? Doesn't help that Umbral Star and Link tease the idea of the Moon Cell recreating things from the past like an entire Nordic territory and we never see it. And Nero flat our wrestling a chimera and winning when it isn't an enemy you can fight
I really like the idea of an open world rpg Extra game. One that continues where the two Extella games left off with a darker story about trying to fend off Velber and fix the almost completely destroyed earth and humanity

I think the dragons are kinna hard to judge quite like this... at least when they're written properly. I think when dragon's are written well (aka one of those things Knaak ends up doing despite the unfortunate way in which he chooses to arrange the english language), you're reminded that they are, in fact, lizards, and are not humans, and it means some of their values and are different than humans.
How they think about their offspring is one of those things, since they are sort of inarguably R-strategy, many offspring species. The way they think about eggs is like, both precious and not precious. A large number of eggs not making it is like, expected, I would think, even if people aren't actively smashing them. I do think that that would lead to different reaction than K strategy children are special and hard to have races
Doing lots of expirements on an egg to try and see if they can cleanse it from old god corruption which we as real ppl don't actually have an analogue for. I don't think experiments trying to cleanse wrathion's egg is morally equal to the kind of experiments deathwing did to try and make roided out chimera dragons. It's less about disposability or risk of destruction, because like, eggs are prob getting fucked up all the time. And even whelplings like.. their idea of personhood for a dragon is really probably later than even whelp stage lol. That's the impression I've got from the dragon stuff I've seen and what I think think is the most interesting interpretation. A bunch of eggs are fucked up and maybe going to turn out evil? Smash em. It's sad but also like, something that happens all the time to them, it's not the same as murdering a bunch of "actual dragons".
Alex's reaction to the dragonmaw is like one of these things as well, it's just an inhuman reaction. Not only is she a lizard but shes also has a supernatural love of life, and is not just like.. a nice person making a choice to forgive. I don't think it says she's so good, but it says she's like, has certain natural and supernatural rules that govern her concerns, which happens to typically mean she's aligned with what the rest of the beings on azeroth consider good.
Idk what the insulting Sab/wrath/ebys is referring to, is that in DF? Is she is afraid they're still susceptible to old god mojo or smt?
I think Alex is actually a really good example of a like truly Neutral NPC? Like more a force of nature sorta character? I think if done well, what she did to Bolvar is a pretty good summation of her whole character type. Saved a dude but because of what she is, it was kinna fucked up.
this is prob not actually relevant to the original points so sry but also i do like to think about how dragons should be weird and more likable if they were a little more alien and less just another race on azeroth
I'm just saying adding that it is something Blizzard does often, that is have a character do terrible awful things and than be presented as a saintly neutral quest giver that has done nothing wrong.
You know, I see where you're coming from, but I have to disagree on it. When we take quests from, say, Illidan in Legion, the narrative has already gone through all of Illidan's history and addressed them. Maiev has had the narrative address her history (loosely, in terms of Wolfheart, but they have acknowledged that book again). Jaina is a shining example of literally always having to pay her karmic debts.
The narrative does not acknowledge that the Red Dragonflight, the protectors of life, kill and magically alter unborn children. In Cataclysm, a red dragon is experimenting on the black dragonflight so that they can have a purified black dragon that they could keep as a slave. This is deemed as okay, because the blacks are crazy anyway, and you go and help this red dragon who basically goes "don't judge me on this it's important" as you beat an enslaved mother into submission and steal her children from her to experiment on. This is something Deathwing does later on the reds, and it's largely considered a bad thing to have done.
So what happens in Dragonflight, a dragon focused expansion where Wrathion, the victim of the red flight's meddling, who narrowly avoided being a slave to the red flight after they murdered his mother and killed all his siblings? Alexstrasza insults and belittles him for wanting to reconnect with his ancestry, repeatedly, one time right after he saved her life and was just politely asking her for aid (you know because the black dragonflight was driven to near extinction). All Wrathion gets to do is look annoyed at her in the cutscene and leave, and from then on we see him, Sabellian, and Ebyssian all try and kowtow to her as she insults their family and them for wanting to take up the good and noble parts of the black flight's legacy.
Yes, Horde and Alliance members have bickered between each other, but this is the queen of dragons, the protector of all life, and here she is belittling the few remaining victims of the Old God's plot and spitting on everything they do.
That's not even mentioning the other shit that happens to children. In Dragonflight, like was said earlier, you're immediately smashing and killing the whelps inside of eggs for having the audacity to be changed with elemental magic. There's no mercy for them, there's no trying to save them with the magic aqueducts of order magic, there's just smash smash smash and you go onto the next one. In Wrath, we smash blue dragon eggs that were just there (you know the blue dragons live there) because the reds wanted us to. These were not combatants in the war. That was a blatant attack on a decimated flight meant to wound Malygos, just as killing his mate and dragging her corpse around to insult him was.
One of Garrosh's crimes was being associated with the Dragonmaw clan, as they enslaved the red dragons before (reminder, Garrosh wasn't even on the planet when this happened). Alexstrasza gives this testimony about how horrible and cruel it was in her time enslaved by the Dragonmaw, but that she forgives all those orcs, because she just loves life so much. Never once is it mentioned that the red dragonflight has done worse things themselves, and that Alexstrasza either gave the order for it or was complicit in it the entire time. Never once has the narrative ever addressed this past occasionally going "Wrathion doesn't really like Alexstrasza" which is the most mild aspect out of all of this.
Magni was never presented as saintly. In Before the Storm, Sylvanas makes a point about how she doesn't trust him because he's still a dwarf and (IIRC) Baine tells her that. well. he is a rock now. Repeatedly his mistakes with his daughter were mentioned—The Shattering, Before the Storm, BFA, off the top of my head—and the narrative does go "Hey, this character is flawed." Yeah, maybe they didn't specifically address the fact that Magni okayed a dig site on tauren land, but that's kind of comparing apples to child murder imo. The most Alexstrasza gets dinged on is Vyranoth going "I thought it was fucked up that you helped the Titans corrupt and change my children" and she STILL joins team Titan at the end of the day. Alexstrasza faces no real repercussions for her actions on this past she lost some friends twenty thousand years ago in a book no one seemed to want to read.
That's why I harp on how the narrative presents Alexstrasza so much.
