Maaaan I MISS this show!! I think they wasted lot of interesting potential. Like... Ambrose's backstory would be SO interesting to watch. Or some prequel with Zelda and Hilda at school times, young. Or Prudence centered spin-off!!

FEMALE MOVIE/TV RECS (PART 1 / FANTASY)
got inspired from a recommendation post so decided to make a list of movies and shows with female-centric stories/female protagonists. since i can't post all of the genres in one post, i'll split it into multiple posts and y'all can save or add to the list as you wish. (disclaimer: i have watched most of these, but i only know about the existence of others. not every movie/show on these lists will be my recommendation. my recommendations will be beneath the list with reasons. also some of these are way better than others in terms of storytelling/performance--which is why i'll list my faves separately):
#1. FANTASY/ADVENTURE (LIVE ACTION)
Common Themes of Media In the List:
-Strong female friendships
-Romance critical (or anti-romantic centrism)
-Emphasis on female-female relationships
-Warrior girls and women
-Revenge against awful men
-Distrust of male love interests
Ones I Haven't Watched:
His Dark Materials
Everything Everywhere All At Once
Paradise Hills
Crimson Peak
Outlander
The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina
House of the Dragon
The Nevers
Cursed
NOT LISTED BUT QUALIFIES
Pan's Labyrinth
Mary Poppins
Twilight
The Craft
The BFG
PERSONAL NOTES FOR THE ONES I'VE WATCHED
The School for Good and Evil
5/10
There were many things about it that were good. The chemistry between the two leading actresses, the primacy of friendship over romance, the effects, the costume and set design, the insane cast (Charlize Theron, Cate Blanchett, Michelle Yeoh, Kerry Washington?!) and the score. Some of the performances were good, too. The pitfalls of the film had more to do with the writing and directing. Some scenes were rushed, some dialogue was embarrassingly bad, some plot points were just nonsensical and childish. The magic system was also not well executed (though I've seen worse).
It's mostly mid, but the ending is refreshing for the fairytale genre and if you like fairytale fluff, you'll probably be more willing to forgive the film's transgressions. If you can, there'll be a lot of fun left to have with it.
2. Damsel
6.5/10
More action than fantasy and with a much smaller cast. Most of the movie focuses on Millie's character. The performances in this were pretty good, though. If you like heroines getting revenge, non-cliche fantasy stories involving princesses, and dragons, this movie is right up your alley! Also the costuming is delightful! It's predictable, but it is also entertaining.
3. Willow
7/10
This show was just fun. Fantastic effects, female heroics, tomfoolery, lesbians, action, evil forces, cool costuming, lesbians, sword-play, riddle-solving, dumbass princes, sarcastic mentors, and lesbians! This show knew exactly what it was trying to be. Aside from some poor performances, my overall impressions is positive.
4. Wednesday
7/10
I personally enjoy Wednesday Addams' character wherever I see her. Having a whole show of her was just a treat. I didn't care for the typical highschool-shenanigans (like the cliques) as much, but there were many enjoyable elements in this for me. Particularly, the effects, the crime, the other female characters, and the ending. It's entertaining and pretty to look at. Also I'm always on my wenclair propaganda.
5. Shadow & Bone
6/10
I've read the Six of Crows duology and the first book of the Shadow & Bone trilogy, so for me this show was a let down. For new watchers, however, you'll find interesting female characters, cool effects, and an entertaining (though sometimes choppy) plot. Inej Ghafa is my queen forever, regardless.
6. Renegade Nell
7/10
This is puts the fantasy in revenge fantasy. I love all the actresses from Derry Girls, and Louisa Harland is still charming in this. It's basically if Gentleman Jack (same director, I think) and Tinkerbell teamed up. Or if Little Women was also Pirates of the Caribbean but instead of taking to the sea it was highway robbery! The action sequences are so fun, the villains are nuanced (particularly the villainess) the comedy isn't overbearing (like I forgot I was watching a Disney show tbh) and the silly towel boy from Ted Lasso is here! I personally had fun. I hope it's renewed.
7. Alice in Wonderland/Through the Looking Glass
7/10 (i love these so much so it's 8/10 for me)
It sucks that Depp is in this, but I can never ever forsake my girl Mia Wasikowska. I just love these movies. I love the design, the music, the costumes, the irreverence toward marriage and romance, Alice's personality and relationship with her mother, how it tackles the pathologisation of female autonomy, the performances, etc. The books are one of my favorite books of all time so there's that.
8. Maleficent
7/10
I really loved the performances in this, the metaphor for rape, the satisfying revenge. I don't mind that it was cliché. I love Maleficent movies. AND the Lana Del Ray cover for "Once Upon A Dream." Also, the first one makes me tear up every time. The mother-daughter love is just so touching to me.
9. Warrior Nun
(?/10)
I love the premise of this show and I can get behind the characters. The protagonist just annoyed me so much so often I have taken multiple breaks and can't remember the story. I am all for imperfect, asshole girl characters. But this protagonist was just whiny and careless beyond reason. And it was taking too long for her to get with the nuns. Like I was not invested enough in her running away arc. Like sis get your ass to the coven you are not that main of a character!
She took up so much screentime when literally every other character in the show was more interesting than she was.
At least there's lesbians.
10. Snow White & The Huntsman
(8/10)
What can I say? Kristen Stewart was hot in this, as was stepmother. Effects? Stellar. Direction? Stellar. Performance? Mostly stellar. Drama? Action? Magic? All there. Thoroughly entertaining. Refreshingly anti-Disney. Unfortunately there are some annoying men involved (I'm talking about the dwarves of course) but it never gets too overbearing. This is, however, the least feminist of the entire list and scores lowest on the above common themes.

Part 3 of my lil fic for shadowheart x astarion
"Have you been watching Chilling Adventures of Sabrina for too long, darling?" Astarion clicked his tongue after listening to Shadowheart's Halloween ideas.
"More like Founder of diabolism" Shadowheart answered. "And anyway, no one said anything about couple costumes, but if you really want to, you can always dye your hair green and become Beetlejuice, and I'll become Lydia. Although, Lestat de Lioncourt would suit you best out of all the movie universes. You love vampires, don't you?"
"Well, of course!" Astarion playfully smoothed his hair. "Ma sheri".
"Your quasi-French sounds terrible" Shadowheart commented. "No, seriously… in his rock star era, you're just perfect for it. Vibe is similar. I'll help you put on makeup."
"So who will you be then?" Astarion inquired, starting to play with her hair. They were hanging out at Shadowheart's place again. He liked the atmosphere of her occult room too much. And Shadowheart's mom was very happy to see him as a guest at their home and always tried to feed him. The house felt like… a home, not a prison.
"I'll temporarily dye the white half of my hair pink and become Draculaura from the new Monster high".
"Ah, so we're both vampires, even if they're from different universes! How lovely!"
"Yeah, Draculaura is just a witch. It suits me. You know, I'm even glad that I have such a reputation among my classmates. They're all some kind of normie cringe, with whom I don't even have common topics for conversation."
"But now you have me" Astarion reminded her, at the same time exaggerating his importance in her life. "I'm not some kind of dull normie. See, I'm even ready to go do all sorts of rituals with you at the cemetery!"
Shadowheart couldn't help but laugh at him. Finally, someone understood her hobbies and didn't judge her for them. The girl simply hugged him in a friendly way, although she didn't deny that somewhere deep down she liked him a little.
"The hugs last longer than they should," Astarion mocked her, but he didn't push her away, only laying his curly head on her shoulder.
"And then what?" she hugged him a little tighter, as if hinting that there was nothing wrong with that. "I can't hug my best friend as much as I want?"
"Quite right," he didn't deny it. All he got from his stepfather was a slap on the head for bad grades, and not even a kind word or parental affection.
"Okay, that's enough… Now you're getting cheeky" Shadowheart snapped at him, wildly embarrassed.
"No, darling" he carefully adjusted the blanket on the bed and laid Shadowheart on it, and he settled down next to her, resting his head on her chest. "And now - yes!"
Her heart almost jumped out of her chest.
"It's… late… It's getting dark, all that…"
"My stepfather knows where I am. Do you really think he can't get me if he wants? I've run away from home so many times that I can't count them on my fingers. I've gotten beaten by him so many times for no reason… He beat me, locked me in the basement and didn't feed me for days. It's like a meme. Only memes are at least funny, and my life with him is not so much."
Shadowheart listened, holding her breath:
"Now I at least understand why you hang out at my place all the time. I wouldn't want to go back either."
"And he's read some magic nonsense and wants to implement it. So… I need your help. If you really know that much about it… help me. I don't know how true all this is, but if it is, then I might not survive his experiments."
"It sounds really creepy. But I'd like to at least know what exactly he read and all that. So that I have something to work with. Just don't turn into Edward Cullen. I understand that he sparkles in the sun and is also kind of handsome, but still…"
Shadowheart extended her little finger to him to cheer him up and get a playful, almost childish oath.
"So you'll come to me as my girlfriend and sit in our library. Its cool, by the way. And he won't get suspicious. If your parents keep telling him aboutus, he'll believe it even more."
"Okay…" Shadowheart was slightly confused. "What wouldn't you do for some unknown magical crap… In any case… thanks for your honesty. At least that explains a lot."
Astarion intertwined his little finger with hers, shaking it slightly like a handshake.
"Yeah. It made me feel a lot better too, darling… So who was your childhood crush? You know, if it wasn't Edward, then who should I be?"
"I'd be lying if I said Valtor from Winx Club," Shadowheart joked, having more or less gotten used to him lying on her and calmed down. "So let it be Faust from Shaman King."
"…
"What? He's really cool…"
"I don't blame you, I don't blame you at all. And my childhood crush Sailor Mars was…"

S7e17: A Different Kind of Cat
We're back baby!
Betty wants to figure out that she's bisexual
OH SHIT BETTY GO OFF
Dark Betty has risen once more
No Betty not your girlfriend :(
Jughead: You in the witch costume was so sexy and girlboss do it again
Archie: I fucked Reggie, that's what happened
The Riverdale underground lesbian world is growing
SHE'S GONNA PUT A NUDE ON THE COVER? I love her
JOSIE!
My queen I have missed you
Jughead about to write Sabrina the Teenage witch?
Does this imply that The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina cannot exist in the 50s timeline?
Josie looks so fucking pretty
Also the Trans-Atlantic accent is so good
Veronica is totally flirting with her
Twyla: Go find yourself a MILF Archie
NO NOT MISS GRUNDY
ARCHIE STAY AWAY
She's 'coming out'
Cheryl: Have you tried masturbation?
Oh this is so uncomfortable, Archie no
Do the writer's think this is better then S1 bc it's Archie initiating
Fangs I love you
The intersplicing with Cheryl painting and Betty masturbating is so fucking funny
Josie! She looks so gorgeous
Also Fangs playing the bongos is so good
They could've chosen a more interesting song? But the staging more then makes up for it
Please stop writing horny poems Archie
CHUCK CLAYTON AS MACBETH?
Josie I want to hug you so bad
Oh hey Midge got more pregnant real fast
'Sabrina the Teenage witch is a great idea'
They've completely forgot the point that the reason Jughead started at Pep comics was because they stole one of his ideas, huh?
I know he's going to the premier but the idea that Archie would get dressed in shirt and suspenders to write poetry is super funny to me
Veronica be nice to your employees
Josie as always, is the only normal and sensible person in Riverdale
Oh yay she gets another song
She deserves all the songs
Josie's previous send-off episode was great but this has been lovely
And then straight to Frank being homophobic
Uncle Frank die challenge

THE SACRIFICE GAME - Review
DISTRIBUTOR: SHUDDER
SYNOPSIS: It's 1971 and at the Blackvale School for Girls, students Samantha and Clara have different circumstances as to why they will not be heading home for the holidays. As the “holdovers” at the school are settling into their holiday “festivities” a gang of cult killers arrives at their doorstep. Apparently, the school houses ancient texts that figures into the gang’s plan to raise hell, literally. Just in time for Christmas things turn deadly and Clara and Samantha bond over one horror filled night.
REVIEW: Filmmakers Jenn Wexler and Sean Redltz weave cinematic magic together for a holiday horror tale that embraces themes and tones from “Die Hard” to “Home Alone,” and “Violent Night” to “Black Christmas.” THE SACRIFICE GAME is an atmospheric contemporary female driven hybrid genre film that embraces a variety of horror concepts from the “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” to “Anna and the Apocalypse” with a charming cast.
I loved the narrative. Wexler and Raditz interwork twists and turns into an engaging tale. They grab the viewer right by the throat with an “in your face” opening sequence that is shocking and extreme. Their nightmare begins to fade as they introduce us to the Blackvale School for Girls, but just as the last emotional vestiges of the opening sequence seem to be fading, things ratchet up as the gang shows up at the school and mayhem ensues. The duo are experts at building up expectations and then shifting perspectives. They create organic characters in Samantha and Clara that hook the viewer. They even add traits to their villains that make them identifiable and at times somewhat likable. Some of the humor can seem a bit dated and flat, but it might be as it is more a homage to the comedy of the 70’s. I enjoyed the dialogue as they created unique character voices and a feel for the period.
The film has excellent production values and an amazing location. It is a stately manor that feels it possesses the history that ecompasses the foundation for their tale. It feels like another character in the film. Wexler artistically frames her shots, and along with the cinematography, adds a lot of ambience to the film and also is reminiscent of the look of the films of the 70s. Likewise, the costumes and production designs invoke the period while adding this dark fairy tale feel. There are some wonderful visual and special effects that add to the shock and awe, and the sequences are skillfully edited for effect and not distract from the story or performances. Part of the glue bringing this all together is a great score by Mario Sévigny and the sound design. By the end, you get a sense that a large percentage of the budget went into the film’s production values and the exceptional talent that went into pulling it all together.
THE SACRIFICE GAME has a great ensemble cast. From the minor characters to the central roles, everyone feels like they brought their “A” game. While I was sad to see some of the secondary characters murdered-out of the tale, Madison Baines as Samantha and Georgia Acken as Clara do an enchanting job of creating this complex relationship that is nicely choreographed in a way that leaves that at a place in their relationship that feels like the genre equivalent of “Thelma & Louise.” These are two talented actors who I'd love to see in a follow up tale about these two characters, it could even make for an excellent series/limited series… just saying.
Other than Diciken’s “A Christmas Carol,” for years there have been few genre films that combine the perfect blend of Christmas and horror/Halloween. Jenn Wexler’s THE SACRIFICE GAME is a hybrid holiday film that earns its place in your holiday film rotation alongside, some of my personal favorites, such films as “Krampus,” “Anna and the Apocalypse,” “Nightmare Before Christmas,” and “Violent Night,” to name a few. Wexler demonstrates passion and artistry for the medium. Along with her film “The Ranger,” her name should be on your list of filmmakers to stay on the lookout for. Jenn Wexler’s THE SACRIFICE GAME is a new holiday horror event that will add some chills and thrills to your holiday season.
CAST: Mena Massoud, Olivia Scott Welch, Gus Kenworthy, Madison Baines, Derek Johns, Laurent Pitre, Chloë Levine and Georgia Acken. Haven't seen Shadow & Bones but totally agree, they are some many stories the have so much potential but the put money in media which is not actually art and instead put money into shitty reality television. So, a majority of the show cancelled tend to be female and people of color lead, have explicitly queer characters. There is obviously, bigotry and greed. Also, for every season of a show the people who work on it are legally suppose to get a rise, the writers, actors, directors, costume designers, etc.
Some of my favorite have been I Am Not Okay With This, Julia & The Phantoms, First Kill, Paper Girls and A League Of Their Own, Rise Of The Pink Ladies, Diary Of A Future President, Babysitter's Club, Chilling Adventure Of Sabrina, iCarly which is just a few.
I bet if Stranger Things was made now and was about a group of young nerdy girls and the majority of the cast was female it would have been cancelled. I Am Not Okay With This was made by the same people behind Stranger Things, so they know who huge it could have been.
It feels like media in a way has actually become less diverse. We have more stories than ever but they never last enough to see the ending because of greed, misogyny, racism, homophobia, transphobia.
They do not think telling stories for and about girls and women is worth it.
They do not think telling stories for and about people of color are worth it.
They do not think telling stories for and about queer people are worth it.
"the show is expensive to produce" okay but have you considered saving money by producing less garbage and investing in making something good
