Dear Gus & Magnus,
Nene took us to the Children's Theatre today to see a production of "The Very Hungry Caterpillar," which you both enjoyed. Afterward we walked over to the playground and ran around, then we went to Loblolly for ice cream. Today's preferred flavors:
Dad -- Double Vanilla, Strawberry Buttermilk in a Loblolly Waffle Cone
Mom -- Funfetti in a bowl
Gus -- Cotton Candy in a regular cone
Mags -- Vanilla Coconut in a bowl
Dad.
Little Rock, Arkansas. 5.27.2023 - 1.58pm.
SIDENOTE: I don't know how Gus scratched his cheek, but it was only around for a day or so.
SIDENOTE #2: Here's some pictures Gus took.

the parallel between Lestat marking all the tenor's flat notes and Armand writing all his aggressive director notes for Claudia on the 500th performance... the performing community of Paris better thank their lucky stars everyday that lesmand didn't become a real couple because there would be no survivors
#they would have all killed themselves within a month..fucking in the box is honestly the kindest thing those bitches could do#modern/human au lesmand run the local youth theatre like the fucking navy#but whenever the moms are around they turn up the cute sassy gay couple charm#so no one even cares/notices that they are giving children permanent psyche issues#on another level though it would probably never work bc Lestat's basic ass would just want to do Shakespeare and classic musicals#while Armand would try to put on NYC black box plays about geopolitical conflicts#iwtv#m.text

Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things (1972)
"Come children, Uncle Alan's going to curdle your blood."
"Uncle Alan already does. Turns my stomach, too."
#children shouldn't play with dead things#1972#horror imagery#horror film#bob clark#american cinema#alan ormsby#valerie mamches#jeff gillen#anya ormsby#paul cronin#jane daly#roy engleman#robert philip#bruce solomon#alecs baird#seth sklarey#bob sherman#curtis bryant#carl zittrer#a pretty rough and ready indie horror film about a theatre troupe who fuck around with the occult (and‚ naturally‚ find out)#this hasn't a whole lot to recommend it on its own merits; it's most interesting as a formative work by filmmaker Clark‚ his first stab at#the horror genre. juat a few years later Clark would helm the superlative Black Christmas‚ sincerely one of the greatest slasher#films ever made‚ but Children... is if anything a testament to just how much his style progressed in a short span. there are moments here#that pack a visual punch‚ tbf‚ and once the dead begin to rise it improves considerably. anything with the impressive looking 'Orville'#corpse (third and final pics above) is great. the problem is more in the script‚ cowritten with star and frequent Clark collaborator Ormsby#it's a turgid mess‚ with an hour of bitchy bickering between the theatre group before anything really happens. there's some great snark in#there and it's pretty entertaining at first‚ but my god does it go on (and on) until you're willing the zombies to tear everyone to shreds#in the zombie canon this has obvious debts to Romero's NotLD as well as more traditional folklore‚ but its emphasis stays frustratingly on#the unlikeable characters and their incidental conversations rather than exploring anything more interesting.

I was just thinking back to Greg Palmer's 1987 play Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs for the Seattle Children's Theatre, which was later retitled Snow White and the Family Dwarf. I reviewed the telecast of that play as part of my Snow White Winter project in 2021.
In some ways it's a deconstruction of the Disney version that in modern terms could be called "woke," but it does it in different ways than the new remake. Some of its choices in this vein I think are slightly annoying, but others I think are well-done.
*The seven Dwarfs aren't dwarfs: they're a family of seven orphaned siblings, four brothers and three sisters, whose surname happens to be Dwarf because they had ancestors with dwarfism.
*The main theme of this version is that Snow White, who has been lonely and neglected ever since her father died, finds a family of choice with the Dwarfs. Her romantic love story is a part of this too...
*Palmer seems to have recognized that arguably, the true heart of the Disney film is Grumpy learning to love Snow White, so his play takes this to the next level. The Grumpy-like Dwarf brother, Elliot, becomes Snow White's love interest. They spend more time talking and getting to know each other than Disney's Snow White and Grumpy, and Elliot reveals his softer side earlier on (mainly through his affection for his little sister Peg, the Dopey character) and eventually reveals that his grumpy attitude is a defense mechanism stemming from grief for his parents. As an orphan too, Snow White bonds with him over this, and by the end they fall in love.
*The Doc character, Walt (ha ha), also has a crush on Snow White, but in the end he accepts that she belongs with his brother, is happy to have her as a friend and sister-in-law, and has faith that "someday my princess will come."
*The Dopey character, Peg, is a realistic portrayal of a developmentally disabled teenager. Apparently, Palmer (who had a son with Down's Syndrome) felt that Disney's Dopey is a caricature of a developmentally disabled person, so he set out to address that fact. Peg is "slow" and lacks social awareness, and some of her odd remarks are played for laughs, but she's fully humanized, and turns out to be much more thoughtful, self-aware, and soulful than she seems at first glance. Meanwhile, her siblings adore her and treat her with care and respect, not with the comic exasperation that Dopey tends to receive from the other dwarfs. They even trust her to stay behind and protect Snow White while the rest of them go to the mine, and when the Queen arrives with the apple, Peg is suspicious right away and figures out that the apple is poisoned, although she fails to stop Snow White from eating it. So even though she thinks of herself as "not smart," she really is.
*The Prince, whose name is Andre, is a classic "Prince Charmless": handsome but stupid and arrogant. When he tries to kiss Snow White, thinking it might break the spell, he accidentally toggles a mechanism on her bed that jolts her into the air. (One of the Dwarfs is a quirky inventor, and he added that to the bed so she'd never have trouble getting up in the morning.) Elliot catches her, and she promptly revives – it's left ambiguous whether the piece of apple is jolted out of her mouth or whether Elliot's embrace breaks the spell.
*Meanwhile, the other Dwarfs capture the Queen. Snow White and the Queen each deliver a monologue to the other, expressing their innermost pain: Snow White from having grown up hated and shunned by the only mother figure she's ever known, the Queen from knowing that all her power comes from her beauty and working exhaustively to maintain it, but knowing all the while that eventually, time will take it from her. After this, seeing the true misery and lovelessness of the Queen's life, Snow White insists that the Dwarfs let her go, since her very existence is punishment enough.
*After this, Snow White almost leaves with Prince Andre, just because that's what fairy tale heroines always do. But then she thinks it over and realizes that she already has true love, not only with Elliot, but with her found family, the Dwarfs. So in the end, she stays in the forest to live happily ever after with them.
It's a lesser-known adaptation, but it's one that stands out in my memory.

was supposed to only skim through a book I need to study for an exam but it actually ended up being interesting. I don't think I'll ever graduate

#it's called fear: a cultural history by joanna bourke#last night i read the chapter about disasters and mass panic#and how if mass panic sets in it'll take 5 minutes for people to start dying. so you have to be able to evacuate in 3-4 minutes#also mass panic sets easily in places where emotions are manipulated ie. theatre and sports stadiums#after the victoria hall disaster in 1883 where children were trampled to death as they scrambled for a toy prize after a theatre show#they invented those doors with the horisontal handles that you can push and they open. the crash bar#which prevents a mass of people getting stuck#anyway. i'm here all week for history trivia#nor's rambles

Thought of the day: Armand has spent more time in France than Lestat by several orders of magnitude. Lestat is born and raised there, but leaves when he’s around 20. While he does come back, as evidenced in moments like the trial, he spends a long time away. Meanwhile Armand was the leader of the Parisian coven for like… 250-300 years, and then the Theatre for another 150. Armand’s spent most of his life in Paris.
I just feel like the amount of time he’s spent there is something I never properly considered, especially when compared to the Frenchman.
How does he feel about watching the city itself changing around him? About the fact that Les Innocents no longer exists? French was fourth and poorest of his languages once, I’m sure it isn’t anymore (speaking of, French, Italian, anyone want to weigh in on what languages three and four are?)
When does the Theatre become an institution on the Boulevard du Temple? Does it as the neighbourhood changes in its entirety? Are there old bones of his former coven members preserved in the Louvre alongside the paintings with him in them?
Is there relief or grief when Les Innocents is destroyed? How about when the theatre goes up in flames? Does he read the news articles talking about its destruction?
Like we all know there’s Venice shaped traumas and rose tinted lenses some days, but tell me more about Armand in Paris. Can he really live somewhere for the 4/5th of his life give it take and then walk away with barely a backward glance.
If he ever returns, what is that like for him?
