     Stressful days were – unfortunately – a very common occurrence at the SBPD. Even if everything was running smoothly, the catching, questioning, and imprisoning of criminals didn’t exactly lend itself to a soothing environment. Especially not for the higher-ups. Such as the chief.

     Fortunately, Buzz McNab knew a little bit about how to alleviate stress. At least, he knew what worked for him when he was stressed.

     So he approached the chief’s office, balanced one of two cups on the back of his hand, and used his now-free hand to knock on the door. After waiting a moment, he stepped inside, holding a cup in either hand.

     “Uh, hey, chief.” He placed the cups on the desk. “These are for you. I didn’t know whether you preferred coffee or tea, so I brought both.” He had already distributed the other cups to others; as he usually did when on break, he brought coffee back for the policemen and detectives who seemed most stressed. (Such as Lassiter, who looked stressed 24/7.) It had become a habit, and one he almost enjoyed, if only to see his coworkers’ eyes brighten as they smiled and thanked him. (Except Lassiter, who seemed to be a in a perpetual state of hating the world, the poor guy.)

  If Carlton Lassiter was one thing, he was stubborn. And being stubborn meant that if he wasn’t laid up in a hospital bed, he was going to be at work, no doubts about it.

          So when he was released from the hospital - after recuperating from a bullet wound and a concussion, both of which he received in a showdown with a few kidnappers - Lassiter went home, and promptly woke up at 5:30am as he did every morning. And he went to work.

       He could feel other policemen staring at him; some were looking at the still-healing injury on his head, others were possibly looking on in admiration at him in regards to the part he had played in taking down the kidnappers. Some of them simply liked to watch everyone who walked in. He didn’t particularly care why people stared at him today. 

        Truth be told, the main reason for that was because he simply could not focus on much of anything except his work, and even that was d i f f i c u l t. His mind seemed a bit foggy, and it frustrated him.

     Before long, he drifted off, unaware of the fact he was sitting at his desk and staring blankly at the surface.
