hey guys I Cannot stop thinking about the way that Barbossa is always turning the medallion over in his hands in COTBP. the minute he gets a hold of it he starts doing it. and maybe probably it was just because oooh spooky villain has mannerism that displays his condescending and self-assured air but I CANT shake the idea of him doing it as a sort of mindless habit that ties into the curse... because just the idea of him Not Being Able To Feel That!!! but he does it anyway because it's so naturally ingrained in people (especially to a seasoned pirate who has probably seen his fair share of valuable objects) to Feel The Texture on a textured item.
also the idea of it not even being a thought-out choice almost makes this MORE true to me. because if Geoffrey Rush really was just fidgeting with the medallion for no reason other than he felt like it does that not lend itself to this even more??? im sorry im Insane about this stupid fucking curse it drives me out of my MIND please I need to talk about it in excruciating detail

BY GOD. MY TIME HAS COME. I have SO MUCH TO SAY op I am so sorry one of my very top choices is specifically the Deftones version of Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want. the song itself lyric-wise is INCREDIBLY Barbossa to me but the Deftones version has a very certain energy that I think matches him quite well. Just that simmering resentment kind of feel. nothing ever goes his way and he just!! wants it to!! for once!! without some horrible catastrophe following in its wake!! goodness is he miserable <3 I know this is gonna sound so silly of me but a bunch of Mitski songs remind me of him sooo insanely much too. Remember My Name is up there, just the sentiment of wanting to BE something and have recognition for it. so many of Barbossa’s central desires boil down to that I think. absolutely Abbey as well for the similar reason of him being just. so so consumed with his desires and going his entire life chasing after more and more and more and constantly fucking himself and other people over with the pursuit... he was BORN hungry. it’s this constant unyielding desperation that was ingrained into him since a boyhood spent romanticizing the lives of wealthy sea captains, peeking through their doorways and swearing to himself he’d be rich and happy some day. and it sticks with him even through the hazy decade of half-living and constant violent outbursts and utter misery. I’m such an advocate for likening stereotypical “sad girl music” to the bossa bc it’s so him so much of the time
and how could I not add Brutus by Buttress to this list <3 the caesar and brutus metaphor just feels so Jack and Barbossa to me. the song itself encapsulates his energy a lot too. sorry for more Mitski ones but Why Didn’t You Stop Me? is in a similar category to me because it’s just more of Barbossa trying to rationalize his conflicted feelings about Jack in the time immediately surrounding the mutiny. I would do a lyric by lyric analysis of ALL of these if this was not a reply to someone else’s post bc I Feel Bad.
anyway those are just the ones that come to mind first. there’s a good few songs by AJJ, Will Wood. and various other artists that give me very strong Bossa Energy but I do not want to keep adding to this. once again op I apologize profusely but this was too good an opportunity not to take
A question for everyone who sees it
🎼What songs do you associate Barbossa with??
#and if. anyone is even remotely interested in whatever the fuck chickooon has to say#I may actually make some more character analysis posts#especially ones that do relate to songs#but for now have the unorganized heap of thoughts I suppose#pirates of the caribbean#potc#hector barbossa#chickooon ramblings

one of my favorite things about the pirates of the caribbean cast is that almost all of them deserve every bit of misfortune they get but you STILL root for them because of how they’re portrayed by the narrative. fuck all these guys but you also want them to be happy kind of!
#except for calypso. she deserves to do whatever she wants#potc#pirates of the caribbean#chickooon ramblings

potc hangs on a precarious set of butterfly effect circumstances already but the One guy from iwtv whose life events are super important for the plot progression to happen the way it does is of course the one whose life events I am changing

I don’t understand when people say they don’t like Tia Dalma/Calypso because she’s “mean” or she isn’t actively helping the other characters. that's the POINT she is literally the goddess of the sea. she is the physical representation of the ocean. the point is that she can be cruel and on no-one's side except for her own and do whatever she wants. morals mean nothing to her. she deserves to make life harder for the pirates actually because they’re all sons of bitches

listen I do not care if a character has no reason/canon backing to prove that they’re ace/arospec, the rule is that if I like them and they have the right vibes, they just are. I will project onto my blorbos all I want

currently thinking abt how Geoffrey Rush said that he interpreted Barbossa as seeing himself as the hero of his own story and how he ultimately thought that he’d prevail and break the curse and get his happy ending. he’s such an interesting and tragic character, my god

headcanon that Jack and Will trade relationship advice and Elizabeth and Barbossa trade relationship advice. they’re all surprisingly relatively good at it in their own ways but none of them take their own advice. Elizabeth and Will are always like “ok cool thanks but what about whatever you’ve got going on with YOUR husband???” and Jack and Barbossa are both always like “I would eat my hat before apologizing to that man”

Y’all know the one scene in At World’s End where Tia Dalma threatens Barbossa by withering his hand away and delivering a vague threat right?? Bc I’ve always interpreted that as her threatening to re-curse him because that feels like something she’d be able to do, but what I’ve heard from everyone else discussing it is that the intention was that she was just threatening to kill him. Which, yeah, is a fine threat, but I feel like the notion of him being cursed again (only this time without a way to really break it unless he were to somehow beg her long enough to earn himself pity points or something) would be arguably worse? Maybe I’m alone in this but I’ve always imagined that the curse would’ve left him with a considerable amount of psychological damage and the idea of having it return hanging over his head feels worse than a “do what I want or I’ll kill you” because after years of pirating that sort of threat has gotta feel kinda hollow, especially to someone like Barbossa who’s probably killed a whole lotta adversaries over the course of his life. I dunno maybe I’m the weird one but I like to think that Calypso would have the power to curse a mortal person, especially considering that the Aztec gold was cursed by “heathen gods” and Calypso is later referred to as a “heathen god” by Davy Jones. Just food for thought I guess

listen we all know that Jack Sparrow is just about the most touch-starved person in the Caribbean who will constantly grab and lean on people as a form of casual intimacy, but to go along with that I raise you this: Barbossa is simultaneously touch-starved and hates being touched. He is constantly in an inner battle between “keep your grubby hands off me, wretch” and “please for the love of god someone hug me I’m so lonely” because he’s just not used to physical intimacy nor is he emotionally prepared to attempt it. To add ANOTHER layer to this, Jack was just about the only person who ever managed to actually get to the point of being able to touch Barbossa without him getting weirded out because of how close they were pre-COTBP

hey so I have ben thinking abt Sparbossa again and I got an idea, Imagine if, after the mutiny, Barbossa just kina kept a lot of Jack’s old things. Like, any personal belongings or trinkets that he kept in his cabin or around the ship would still be there, but what if Barbossa didn’t have the heart to throw a lot of his stuff away? What if he just shoved the things into a box, or hell, even left some out in the open? Any of Jack’s items that were important to him, any pretty shiny thing he’d stolen and put up as a trophy, any article of clothing that he left behind is either carefully stored away or left in its original place. And after Barbossa dies and Jack gets the Pearl back, he finds all his old belongings either tucked away into a chest, or right where he left them

I think my favorite thing about Barbossa in COTBP is that he played everything up so much just for the vibes. he has to be the most pretentious pirate out there. he has multiple evil monologues that are as extra as possible. he literally freaked Elizabeth out for no reason with the “that’s why there’s no sense to be killing you YET” thing knowing damn well he was just going to slit her palm at the blood ritual anyway. this man runs on spite and melodrama, he is such a theater kid it’s so funny he is such a dramatic asshole
