Do you think that the HoM crew knows about Randy’s fear of chickens?
(I both hope they do and don’t. Do, because it’s overall funny to think about and Don’t, because I’m sure Randy’s really self conscious about his fear and worries about judgment from anyone)
if it comes up, im sure most of them would be understanding (after all, phobias sometimes can't be helped) after some good natured ribbing
but i have a feeling that Randy might try his best to seem tough in front of them and some would probably take the teasing... a bit too far

The Chicken Hawk's Caper
Tumblr media
In the cozy coop, where feathers fluff, A hawk with a beak as sharp as a bluff, Landed one day, with a mischievous grin, Ready to stir up a poultry whirlwind.
The hens clucked in panic, feathers aflutter, "Who invited this hawk? What a terrible clutter!" But the hawk just grinned wider, eyes gleaming bright, "Hello, my fine fowls! I'm here for a bite!"
He strutted around, wings flapping with glee, Ignoring the rooster, who crowed, "Hey, that's me!" The chicks huddled close, their tiny hearts racing, While the hawk eyed the buffet – oh, what a placing!
"Listen up, ladies," the hawk declared, "I've come for a feast, and I'm not easily scared. Your eggs are my treasure, your drumsticks divine, So step aside, cluckers, it's mealtime, no whine!"
The hens exchanged glances, their wattles all droopy, "Is this guy for real? He's acting downright loopy!" But the hawk lunged at an egg, claws outstretched wide, And the rooster squawked, "Hold it right there, feathered tide!"
He flapped his wings, feathers flying like confetti, "Enough is enough! You're not having spaghetti!" The hawk blinked in shock, feathers ruffled and bent, "Rooster, my friend, I thought we were content!"
The rooster puffed up, chest swelling with pride, "Content? Not with you here, causing chaos inside! This coop is for chickens, not hawkish invaders, Now shoo, before I call in the egg-laying crusaders!"
The hawk grumbled, talons tapping the floor, "But I'm just a hungry bird, seeking a little more." The hens formed a circle, feathers fluffed in defiance, "Go hunt elsewhere, hawk, this is our alliance!"
And so, with a flap and a squawk, the hawk took flight, Leaving behind a coop in disarray and slight. The hens cheered, the rooster crowed, victory won, And the chicken hawk learned: coops aren't for fun!
So next time you see a hawk eyeing your eggs, Remember this tale of coop-bound dregs. For even the fiercest bird can't outwit a crew, When it comes to protecting their eggs and their coup!

TW: Animal death (I think)
RIP Barred Rock (?)
We noticed yesterday that the rooster's tail was all short. (His flopped-over comb has always been like that.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then I realized that for some reason, it seemed like there were fewer chickens. After counting over and over (you try counting chickens whilst they're running around. Contrary to clichés, it is easier to count your chickens before they've hatched!)
Finally, we realized that neither of us had seen the barred rock lately. No trace. All we can surmise is that hawk we recently saw flying over came back, grabbed the barred rock, the rooster tried to fight him off (losing some tailfeathers in the process), and the hawk got away with her. We found no barred rock feathers anywhere, but the woods are thick with brush. If the hawk went to a nearby tree for its meal, the brush could easily hide the dropped feathers.
The remaining Buff Orpington (aka "the blonde one") is the sole remaining hen from our first chickens, and all the hens from the year after are gone. She must have nine lives!

I've been worried this week about birds of prey attacking my chickens—well, one bird of prey. I heard a hen make her very characteristic INTRUDER cry the other day and ran out of the house and there was a hawk flying in circles high above. I half-heartedly threw some sticks in its direction and told my hen not to be so dramatic (the hawk looked like it was minding its own business frankly), but the next day it happened again, and I thought, I've been unfair to the hens, the hawk from yesterday was actually reconnoitering and they could tell. Then there was another alert the next day. I was starting to get a bit alarmed about the fact that I was dealing with the world's most determined hawk—though I didn't see it again past the first time, I figured I arrived too late and Pandolf had already deterred it.
I ended up setting up a pen for the hens very near my house, under the hazel tree so they'd be sheltered, and spying from the kitchen window the next day, to see if it was still the same bird or what. It tended to attack at the same time every day, which was extra baffling.
And what I saw was Pandolf returning from his daily morning patrol around the pasture, faff around looking a bit bored, circle my house looking for me, and when he didn't find me, go to the chickens' pen and pretend to pounce on them like a fox, which startled them and made them cry out. Pandolf didn't touch them, he clearly just wanted them to make their magical Make Human Appear noise. Immediately after they yelped he turned to look at the front door expectantly, waiting for me to run out. He knows that when I get distracted from what I was doing indoors I often end up being like, well, now that I'm outside I might as well go do [outdoor chore of the day] and he gets to tag along, so he concocted this devious plan...
So. I must turn this post into a callout post for Pandolf. This is the face of a problematic dog, who tried to frame a hawk and use innocent hens for his own ends after he realised their person-summoning noises work while his do not.

Non-US Backyard Bird Poll!!
edit (11/20) - AFRICAN, SOUTH AMERICAN, and ASIAN Continents! I need more submissions from you!
Is your submission a bird? Have you seen it in your backyard? Or neighborhood? Or randomly at a park? Any commonly seen bird is acceptable! Whether in your own backyard or a vacation you enjoyed, or a friend's place, or-- okay, you get the picture!
Even if you don't know species or common name, just slap your favorite common bird in the submission box and I will do my best to figure out who they are for the poll!
The submission box closes December 1st!
I am not accepting "American" birds (aka USA and perhaps any common Canadian/Mexican birds that are also common in the US), but like... I can't stop you from submitting them. They just won't be included in the final poll. There have been many a "favorite bird" poll I've seen in the past which highlight our beloved US birds and this poll is not for them. (maybe they'll have a "just for fun" poll before the real show starts)

Aah. So like I just recently stumbled upon Sky Cowboys and I am so enraptured by Larn’s worldbuilding.
If you don’t know, Sky Cowboys is basically what if old west but Pegasus and I love it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I made these three for it.
Sorin is based off of a bearded vulture and loves to roll around in red dirt to the point he’s stained his pale gray feathers red.
Asra is based off of an ornate hawk-eagle and she is a very firey mare with a short temper.
Visha is based off a salmon pekin brahman chicken and he is a good boy that loves traveling to dressage shows as well as going for trail rides with kids.
You can go here to see my photo references.
I spent too long on these but it was fun anyway. Will likely add more.
Full credit to @skycowboys for the lineart and worldbuilding I love your ideas and storytelling. I recommend checking out their blog.
