With the diverse cultures represented in our Harvard students, staff, faculty, researchers and fellows, this month gives us an opportunity to celebrate the legacies, histories, and contributions of Hispanic, Latinx, Chicana, South American, Central American, Latino-Caribbean, and Afro-Latinx individuals and communities.

At the Fine Arts Library, we are highlighting Latinx/Hispanic artists’ works on social media. Home--So Different, So Appealing explores works by diverse U.S. Latinx and Latin American artists whose practices engage with the concept of home.  

“Home signaling a dwelling, residence or place of origin embodies one of the most basic concepts for understanding an individual or group within a larger physical and social environment. Yet home has been a little noted, although prevalent, feature in art since the 1950s, a period in which artists challenged the traditional object of the visual arts through the use of material and media culture, new forms, and performative actions and processes.” (Publisher’s note)

CAM: On the final day of exhibition 03/04/23, we arrived at Crear Studio for an early viewing of Jose Lozano “The Yellow Pad Series.”

We learned through the gallery showcard that this “is a collection of consciousness narratives on faux yellow pad ground, which includes line art and mixed-mediums with graphite, ballpoint pen, and colored pencil on gessoed paper and wood panels.”

One Bunk A gem of a vacation rental, One Bunk Ocean Beach is a thoughtfully decorated, mid-century landmark. Featuring exceptional post-war modern architecture and design, this historic Post and Beam home was designed by architect Loch Crane (an apprentice of Frank Lloyd Wright) in 1962.

Chicano Park Murals Cross-border influence benefits the art scenes in San Diego and Tijuana alike, and the murals of Chicano Park highlight the rich cultural heritage of the Barrio Logan neighborhood. Painted directly on the concrete pillars of the I-5 Coronado Bridge, the artworks represent the world’s largest collection of Mexican-American outdoor murals. The monthly Barrio Logan Art Crawl showcases the murals, as well as the neighborhood’s art studios, galleries, and public art installations.

San Diego is a beer town, home to 120+ craft breweries, the most of any region in the United States.
