कार्तिक मास के शुक्ल पक्ष की चतुर्थी तिथि से छठ का पावन त्योहार मनाया जाता है। दिवाली के 6 दिन बाद छठ का त्योहार मनाया जाता है। यह पर्व खासतौर पर बिहार, उत्तरप्रेदश, झारखंड में अधिक मनाया जाता है। छठ पूजा में भगवान सूर्य की पूजा का विशेष महत्व है। चार दिनों का महापर्व छठ शुरुआत ‘नहाय खाय’ से होती है। इस बार छठ पूजा 20 नंवबर को पड़ रही हैं।

पहला दिन नहाय खाय

छठ पूजा की शुरूआत कार्तिक मास की शुक्ल पक्ष की चतुर्थी के दिन नहाय खाय के साथ होगी। इस दिन व्रत स्नान करके नए कपड़े धारण करते है और शाकाहारी भोजन करते है। व्रती के भोजन करने के बाद ही परिवार के अन्य सदस्य भोजन ग्रहण करते हैं। इस बार नहाय खाय 18 नवंबर को पड़ रहा है। इस दिन सूर्योदय सुबह 6 बजकर 46 मिनट पर और सूर्योस्त शाम को 5 बजकर 26 मिनट पर होगा।

दूसरा दिन खरना

दूसरे दिन ‘खरना’ होता है। खरना के दिन छठ करने वाले व्यक्ति पूरे दिन का उपवास रखकर शाम के वक्त खीर और रोटी बनाते है। इस बार खरना 19 नवंबर को मनाया जाएगा। खरना के शाम को रोटी और गुड़ के ��ीर का प्रसाद बनाया जाता है। प्रसाद में चावल, दूध के पकवान, ठेकुआ बनाया जाता है। साथ ही फल सब्जियों से पूजा की जाती है। इस दिन सूर्योदय सुबह 6 बजकर 47 मिनट बजे और सूर्योस्त शाम को 5 बजकर 26 मिनट बजे पर होगा।

तीसरे दिन ‘अस्त होते सूर्य को अर्घ्य’

छठ के तीसरे दिन यानी शाम के वक्त अस्त होते हुए सूर्य को अर्घ्य दी जाती है। इस बार शाम का अर्घ्य 20 नवंबर को है। छठ व्रती पूरे दिन निर्जला व्रत करते हुए शाम को अस्त होते हुए सूर्य को अर्घ्य देती है। इस दिन नदी या तालाब में सूर्य को अर्घ्य देने की परंपरा है।

चौथे दिन ‘उगते हुए सूर्य को अर्घ्य’

चौथे दिन उगते हुए सूर्य को अर्घ्य दी जाती है। अर्घ्य देने के बाद लोग घाट पर बैठकर विधिवत तरीके से पूजा करते हैं फिर आसपास के लोगों को प्रसाद दिया जाता है। इस बार 21 नवंबर को मनाया जाएगा।

एक राजा था जिसका नाम स्वायम्भुव मनु था। उनका एक पुत्र प्रियवंद था। प्रियवंद को कोई संतान उत्पन्न नहीं हुई और इसी कारण वो दुखी रहा करते थे। तब महर्षि कश्यप ने पुत्रेष्टि यज्ञ कराकर उनकी पत्नी को प्रसाद दिया, जिसके प्रभाव से रानी का गर्भ तो ठहर गया, किंतु मरा हुआ पुत्र उत्पन्न हुआ।

राजा प्रियवंद उस मरे हुए पुत्र को लेकर श्मशान गए। पुत्र वियोग में प्रियवंद ने भी प्राण त्यागने का प्रयास किया। ठीक उसी समय मणि के समान विमान पर षष्ठी देवी वहां आ पहुंची। राजा ने उन्हें देखकर अपने मृत पुत्र को जमीन में रख दिया और माता से हाथ जोड़कर पूछा कि हे सुव्रते! आप कौन हैं

तब देवी ने कहा कि मै षष्ठी माता हूं। साथ ही इतना कहते ही देवी षष्ठी ने उस बालक को उठा लिया और खेल-खेल में उस बालक को जीवित कर दिया। जिसके बाद माता ने कहा कि तुम मेरी पूजा करो। मैं प्रसन्न ह���कर तुम्हारे पुत्र की आयु लंबी करूंगी और साथ ही वो यश को प्राप्त करेगा। जिसके बाद राजा ने घर जाकर बड़े उत्साह से नियमानुसार षष्ठी देवी की पूजा संपन्न की। जिस दिन यह घटना हुई और राजा ने वो पूजा की उस दिन कार्तिक मास के शुक्ल पक्ष की षष्ठी तिथि को की गई थी। जिसके कारण ��ब से षष्ठी देवी यानी की छठ देवी का व्रत का प्रारम्भ हुआ।

When is Chhath Puja celebrated?

Stories behind celebrating Chhath Puja

Some say that Chhath Puja is the oldest festival that may even go before the Ancient Vedas as the Rigveda contains hymns of worshipping the Sun and some similar rituals as followed in this festival. These rituals also additionally have a notice in the Mahabharata where Draupadi is portrayed performing similar rituals. On the advice of astute Dhaumya, the rituals of Chhath were followed by the Pandavas and Draupadi. This worshipping of the Sun solved many problems of Draupadi and later helped the Pandavas to regain their kingdom. The scientific or yogic history of this festival dates back to the Vedic times when the scholars or rishis of yore used this technique to remain without food as they used to absorb energy from the rays of the sun. This was known as Chhath Method. Some ancient also suggest that Lord Rama and Sita kept fast and offered puja to the sun in the Kartika month during the Shukla Paksha during their coronation after returning from the exile.

Rituals and Traditions of Chhath Puja

The rituals of the festival are observed over a period of four days. The rituals are: holy bathing, fasting and abstaining from drinking water called Vratta, standing in water for long periods of time, and offering Prasad (prayer offerings) and Arghya to the setting and rising sun.

On the first day, the devotees keep fast by eating clean and ‘pure’ food. Meat, garlic and onion are discarded. The second day is Kharna, which is observed to reduce wrongdoing committed by the devotees and the third and major celebration is known as Chhath when the puja is conducted.

No Idol Worship

This is the only Hindu festival or perhaps the only festival in the world that signifies the rising and the setting Sun. The most unique feature of this Chhath Puja is that there is no Murti Pujan or Idol Worshipping unlike most of the festivals of the Hindu religion. Some people simply opine that Sun is necessary for the life of possibly every creature on the earth and this festival is a way to pay tribute to it irrespective of caste, creed, gender, race, and social stigmas.

The significance of Chhath Puja

Now apart from the religious significance of thanking the Sun for providing us a good life, there is some science too attached to the rituals of this festivals. The rituals demand to pray at the river bank or standing at the river bank for long hours and there is an explanation to it. The ultraviolet rays of the sun are at their lowest during sunrise and sunset and that’s why the sun rays are most beneficial at these two times. These sun rays then help in detoxifying the mind, body, and soul by removing all negative energies.

What is Chhath Puja

Chhath Puja is basically celebrated on Kartika Shukla Shashthi, which is the 6th day of the month of Kartika in the Vikram Samvat. According to Gregorian English Calendar, the festival basically falls in the month of October or November. While the 4-day festival will start from 11 November and will end on 14 November.  Chhath Puja is on the 13th(sunset) and 14th(sunrise) of November 2018.
