Chevy Chevelle - Iconic Muscle Car of its Era
One of the most versatile muscle cars of its era, the Chevy Chevelle first came off the production line in September 1963, introduced at a Chicago press conference. Built on an A-body platform, the Chevelle shared the same underlying frame as the Oldsmobile Cutlass, Pontiac Tempest, and Buick Skylark. Its niche was between the large Impala and compact Chevy II/Nova, and its nearest competitor at launch was the Ford Fairlane. The popular mid-size sold 338,286 units in its first year and remained in production until 1977.
Introduced as a 220-horsepower 283cid, the Chevelle was initially available as a two-door hardtop, the Sports Coupe, or a convertible. A smaller number of four-door sedans and two or four-door station wagon models also made it to showroom floors. One hallmark was that it returned the 115-inch wheelbase of 1955 to 1957 Chevys. This created a smooth ride that backseat passengers appreciated, making it a popular family vehicle. By the end of 1964, the Chevelle was available with a top-line 300 horsepower 327cid engine that solidified it in the performance category.
By 1965, Chevy offered a performance 350hp L79 engine on its Super Sport (SS) trim model. Innovations included vinyl bucket seats with a floor console, a four-gauge cluster, and an optional dash-mounted tachometer that measured revolutions per minute.
In 1965, Chevrolet upped the ante, introducing the Chevy Malibu SS 396 Z16. The Z16 replaced the small-block engine of previous SS models with a big-block V8 engine known as the 396 (or L37). This delivered a full-throated 375 horsepower and is seen by many as the start of the classic muscle car era. The Z16 is also one of the most sought-after models by vintage collectors, as only 201 of the new trim was manufactured in its inaugural year.
The popularity of the higher-performance Super Sport packages on the baseline Chevelle was such that in 1966, Chevrolet made SS its model, which featured a 396 engine and horsepower options between 325 and 375. This more limited version of the first-generation Chevelle, the SS396 series, lasted through 1968.
Spanning 1968 to 1972, the second generation of the Chevelle relegated Super Sport to an engine package again and represented a radical redesign of the vehicle. The 396 cubic inch, 375hp engine remained the top-of-line option. Aesthetically, the taillights were bigger, and the back of the vehicle was shorter and curvier. With a cut wheelbase, the second-generation Chevelle also featured a noticeably longer hood.
The 1970 Chevelle LS6 introduced the iconic twin racing-stripe front hood option, which is familiar from car chase scenes in movies and TV series of the era. Its taillights were bumper-mounted, and with a 450 horsepower 454 block, it had one of the most powerful engines of the era. The highly collected model only lasted a single year: already, United States regulations were on the horizon that would make better mileage vehicles a must, and in 1971, the vehicle returned to a small-block 350 engine.
The mid-1970s oil crisis and further fuel economy regulations stripped the Chevelle line of its power and luster. By 1977, the Chevrolet Chevelle and Malibu series had only 145 horsepower, a far cry from their muscle car heydays. The following year, the Chevelle was folded into the Malibu brand as Chevy streamlined operations.

The particular Quick List Of American Muscle Vehicles
By David Ashton
When I first compiled this list, it was really for my own benefit so I could have a quick reference to all of the major American muscle cars produced between the mid-60s and mid-70s. Basically, the most popular makes and years for that golden age of high displacement muscle machines. Now it’ s time to pass it on to you good folks, so you have a quick reference to start to see the most popular muscle cars at a glance. Now, I know there will be a couple of exceptions here and there missing, so if you see any that are not included, please comment below so that we can add them and make the best list on the net of all things muscle car. For the Ultimate list of muscle cars go here .

Chevy II Nova SS
Ford Torino Cobra 428
Двигатель: 4V CJ (Cobra-Jet), 375 л.с.
Plymouth Road Runner
Chevrolet Impala SS (1967)
Двигатель: Turbo Jet V8, 425 л.с.
Chevrolet Chevelle SS 454
Dodge Challenger SRT-8
Двигатель: Chrysler Hemi V8, 425 л.с.
Pontiac GTO
Chevrolet Camaro Z-28
Ford Mustang Boss 302/Shelby GT500 «Eleanor»
Shelby Mustang.
Shelby Cobra.
Dodge Charger R/T (1969)
Двигатель: 440 Magnum V8, 425 л.с.
Dodge Charger 500.

Original Owner Still Enjoys His Unrestored 1968 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28
Darn Mick Yonkers! Leave it to that rascal to go and buy the exact car Joe Koski wanted a 1967 L79 Chevelle, down to the color and all. Both gearhead guys ran together on the loud streets of Chicago, growing up during the 1960s. Among their friends and Chevy-lovin’ crew, there was one take on performance: small-block. “They seemed to deliver lots of horsepower without breaking as much as the big-blocks,” explains Joe, who still lives in the Windy City. “Of course, we all knew the great things Grumpy Jenkins and Dave Strickler were doing with them at the dragstrip.”
When 1967 rolled around, Joe was ready to buy his own car (returning his dad’s 1965 Impala). He searched high and low for what he wanted most, a 1965 L79-equipped Chevelle. “I liked the power, and a lot of that was due to the cam, pistons, and the Holley on an aluminum high-rise manifold,’ he says. “Those small-block motors sound and perform great. I still dig the sound of a car with a performance camshaft at idle.”
Shortly after buying the hot car, Joe Koski added an alarm, complete with mercury switches and an ignition cutoff. Gas station staff were foggy on the Z’s equipment, but thieves weren’t. “I didn’t want to lose the car to burglary or somebody with a tow truck,” says Joe. “Chicago’s nice, but I wanted to feel secure parking it on the streets.”
Turns out, he wasn’t alone. Even used, those special Chevelles were few and far between, leaving Joe no choice but to pony up and order one new. “I finished the spring college semester, returned home, and was all prepared to go place my order,” he says. His family’s dealership of choice was nearby Brigance Chevrolet, home of Chicago muscle car sales icon Mr. Ed Schoenthaler.
Then came the news of Mick Yonkers and his shiny new ride, and Joe’s plan screeched to a halt. “I always took Mick for a Mopar man since he drove and raced his father’s 1965 426 Wedge Coronet,” says Joe. “Turns out, he liked Chevys, too.”
Mick’s move ended up being a blessing in disguise. It led Joe to the car he would come to cherish for life.
Wanting to be different from his pal, Joe waited to see what the 1968 Chevelle redesign would bring. His hopes rose when news broke that they’d have the L79, but those hopes dropped fast when he learned it would lack the aluminum intake and Holley carb. “Back to the drawing board I went, thinking, How else I could get that combo?” Ruling out the pricy Corvette, within the Chevy lineup those power parameters zeroed his search to just the Camaro Z/28.
Any time the car needed maintenance, Joe easily got it in the Brigance Chevrolet service department. “Several mechanics were buds, but no motor work was ever done. It has never been apart.” Joe estimates that there’s around 15,000 miles on the car. The odometer broke at 11,780, and he never bothered to fix it.
Joe was in a great spot to see those cars up close. That summer (and the summer of 1969), he worked at Brigance. Most days he could be found in the parts department, then the service department, answering customer calls, bringing cars to mechanics, and occasionally filling in as a service writer and drafting work orders. The daily tasks changed but not the high-powered machines constantly around. “All day long I was surrounded by nothing but performance,” he recalls. “The dealership was moving 435-horse Corvettes and 396/375-horse Chevelles, Camaros, and Novas all day long. I’d come to work on Monday, and first thing in the morning we’d be loaded with cars that had been to the track on Sunday and already needed repair.”
One of the guys responsible for moving that Chi-town muscle was salesman Len Dudas. He was the Koski’s go-to guy, and naturally, Joe sought him to order his 1968 Camaro Z/28. Joe was all of 19 that May, with his birthday just around the corner.
This photo, dated July 1968, shows Joe’s Camaro still wearing its window sticker. He took delivery of his Camaro on Memorial Day, which means he either left the sticker in the window for weeks or, more likely, it took a while to finish the roll of film.
Black was his first choice of paint color, but because it was unavailable, he selected his second favorite, Cordovan Maroon. “That matched Dad’s Impala, also ordered from Len,” says Joe.
Most of his limited teenage budget was taken up by the car’s base price, but he dug deep and tacked on a few options, including tinted glass and an AM radio. Like most heavy right footers buying these cars, Joe left off power steering. “Any added belt on the drivetrain was robbing horsepower,” he recalls with a smirk. “That’s not something I wanted.”
The sports car was delivered on a glorious Memorial Day weekend. Right away, Joe saw firsthand how little people knew about the new Chevy offering. “Driving home, I pulled into a Shell station to refuel.” A curious attendant came out and recognized the car, but because of the stripes he couldn’t figure out just what in tarnation it was. “He walked around and around then finally saw the fender badge,” Joe says. “He paused, looked up at me, and said, ‘What’s a Z-2-B?’”
While many folks Joe encountered sought to know what the car was, many more cared to know what it could do. “People constantly wanted to see how fast it was on the street. I always made sure the motor was in tune, just in case something came up.”
He got plenty of street time to dial it in, but even more on sanctioned strips. On any given warm weekend, he’d be at Oswego Dragway in Oswego, Illinois, competing in the E/Pure Stock class. “You’d remove the hubcaps and trim rings, pop on your seatbelt, and with street tires and closed exhaust, you’d be off and running.” The gearhead was constantly lining up against 400 Firebirds, Road Runners, Super Bees, and ram air 4-4-2s, fighting to be competitive.
“The Z’s tires weren’t wide enough for getting off the line well,” Joe remembers. “I’d pop the clutch at 3,000 rpm and feather and dance with the throttle. Once they hooked and I got going, I’d be fine.”
Although they were close to home, the track’s pits weren’t paved and were quite dusty. “It was never fun lying under the car in dirt.” After hearing of Union Grove, Wisconsin’s Great Lakes Dragaway and its asphalt-coated lots, Joe started frequenting there, as well as the US 30 Drag Strip, just over the state line in Indiana.
His biggest boost in top-end power came from a trip back to the dealership. “Once the car had its 1,000-mile warranty check-in, off came the smog pump and belt,” says Joe. “The parts department sold plugs that fit perfectly into the exhaust manifold.” Another trick he did was swapping in six-cylinder distributor springs, which were stiffer and kept better timing.
When Joe slowed down, he’d be found cruising to the local Topps Big Boy on Ogden Avenue. “I’d back in with the parking lights on and watch the other muscle cars parade through.” The joint was known for juicy burgers, but Joe would instead grab a steaming-hot pie from down the street at Villa Nova, a pizzeria still in business today.
Summertime in the Z was splendid, but come those frigid winters things got dicey. “With those skinny tires, that engine power, and rearend, I’d spin on frost,” Joe recalls. Helping him further take it easy was the 4.88 gear he installed in the rearend. He did it to own stoplight romps, but it did make his highway drives more relaxed. So much so that on December 22, 1969, Joe was interstate cruising, heading home from college, when his mirrors lit up blue and red. “The officer pulled me over for going under the speed limit. I explained the situation and the state trooper laughed, letting me go with a warning.”
Joe would go on to get his degree, leaving Brigance Chevrolet and moving on to his teaching career. His first position was teaching math at the Thomas Middle School in Arlington Heights. Now with a 30-mile commute, Joe sourced a well-loved 1957 Chevy Nomad to drive daily.
Decades haven’t changed Joe’s passion for his Z-2-B (as some called it).
Wedding bells tolled for Joe in 1975, followed by four kids in the years to come. The new dad kept the Camaro around, always figuring out a way to keep it garaged. “My single buddies, like Mick, would go from one fast car to another, kidding me that it was time for something,” says Joe. “I’d always reply that my kids are going to drive my car. Sure enough, it’s been around long enough for that to happen.”
Special thanks to model Eva Le Rouge and car owners Mark Knecht, Chuck Casey, Bob Cyr, and Mike Kohanski for taking part in our photo shoot.

Woodward Dream Cruise: Cruising With GM’s Tom & Adrienne Peters
Tom Peters has spent 35 years in GM’s design organization, amassing a portfolio of design icons that includes the first Saturn vehicles, the Corvette Indy, the Pontiac Banshee, the Cadillac Sixteen concepts, the Cadillac XLR, and the C6 Corvette. Today Tom serves as director of design for rear-wheel-drive and performance vehicles. Adrienne, his daughter, inherited all the car-lust chromosomes and now serves as marketing manager for GM performance, essentially helping peddle the fantastic stuff her dad designs. We had the distinct pleasure of cruising with both of them at the 2017 Woodward Dream Cruise, and we shot photos of the cars that moWost interested the pair. Herewith: the Peters’ picks of the Woodward litter.
Tom’s 1965 Chevrolet Impala SS396
“Big-block, stick, air!” That’s the rare combo that drew Tom to this particular ’65 Impala, but the impetus to seek one out was the fact that a neighbor had one back in the day, and it made a big impression on Tom. He’d grown up liking GM cars, though his dad was not in the business and did not have any car-guy genes to pass along to Tom. “Everything was amped up in those days of absolutely herculean cars—Cobra Jets, 427s, 396s,” he said. Tom and his friends all got the car magazines and compared notes. He built loads of model cars and began drawing cars almost obsessively. He got good enough at depicting the iconic customized cars of the day, such as Ed “Big Daddy” Roth’s Rat Fink, that he’d sell small original sketches for a quarter or draw them in permanent marker on a T-shirt for $3.50. It was clearly time well spent.
Adrienne’s ’70/’72 Chevrolet Monte Carlo
OK, the VIN identifies this car as a 1972 model, but Adrienne prefers the simpler, finer lines of the ’70. When the best body she could get was a ’72 model, she simply replaced all the trim items that differentiate the styling with 1970 bits. At the start of the project in 2009, while she was still in college, she sat at the kitchen counter with her dad. “I talked,” she said. “He sketched.” They came up with a murdered-out matte black minimalist look with a cowl-induction hood, no badging (her dad debadged even his company lease cars), and tall-sidewall wide rubber all around. The frame was blasted, boxed, minitubbed (to accept 14-inch-wide rear wheels and tires), and signed by Adrienne in welding rod. The engine is an LS6 short-block dressed with a GM Performance top end, mounted to a THM400 automatic spinning a 3.73:1 Positraction axle.
1968 Chevrolet Chevelle 327
Adrienne first set out to find a ’68 Chevelle. She was particularly drawn to the way the narrow taillamps stretched around the side of the car. “I always wanted to build one, but you see a lot of them,” she said. “I wanted something uncommon and unexpected.”
1966 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray
When Tom was a kid during a stint living in the greater Twin Cities region in Minnesota, he recalls one of the kids at his school being dropped off every day in one of two C2 Corvettes. They looked similar except one of them had a TV screen in the dash. He presumes the dad in question might have been a Honeywell exec.
Dodge Vipers
As we pass a gathering of Vipers, we ask the man who’s worked on multiple Corvettes what he thinks of the Viper design. “I like the first one the best,” he said. “With the second one it seemed like they were looking at the Corvette too much. I wouldn’t want to own one, but I appreciate it.”
1969 Chevrolet Nova 502
Ate up with motor! If you zoom in on the engine identifier ahead of the front side marker lamp on this “No. 2” Nova, you’ll see it has been customized to match what it is that has forced the big bulge in that hood: one of the five 502 big-block offerings from the Chevrolet Performance catalog. Tom is friends with the driver’s dad—big-block owners unite!
1961 Chevrolet Corvair Lakewood
“Boy, you don’t see one of those every day.” Tom said as we rolled up on this nicely preserved station wagon example of Ed Cole’s rear-engine VW rival. As we pulled alongside the driver’s window, Tom shouted, “You’ve got the coolest car on the street!”
1999 Chevrolet Camaro
As a GM exec’s daughter, Adrienne was fortunate enough to hop on the company car bandwagon pretty early. Her first car, which she got at the age of 16 and still remembers quite fondly, was a 1999 Camaro. “That might have been a bit too much car for her—she got in a bit of trouble with that one,” Tom said. (Only speeding tickets! Nothing serious.)
1965 Ford Thunderbird
“I’ve always loved those,” Tom said as we rolled by this red beauty. “You mean even before Thelma and Louise?” we asked (and yes, they ruined a perfectly good ’66, not a ’65). “Yeah, I’ve always considered that car a symbol of California cool.”
1965 Chevrolet Impala 283
Tom and this guy exchanged the customary pleasantries, which is extremely easy at the low-n-slow pace of traffic during Woodward Dream Cruise week. The Avenue was lousy with ’65s, but we never saw a single ’63 Impala. We were looking for one because Tom is especially fond of the sculpture on that car, some of which was likely imprinted on him during his childhood when he fondly and frighteningly recalls riding along with older 17-year-old friends and tearing up the back roads at blistering speeds.
1950 Chevrolet DeLuxe
When we asked Adrienne if she had any particular fondness for cars born well before she was, she instantly identified “those fun shoebox cars” such as the 1950 Chevy. They must still be popular because we saw several shoebox-era Chevys on the Avenue, including this little cutie standing guard outside the Sprint store.
C2 Corvette Grand Sport Custom Clone?
This quasi Corvette Grand Sport knockoff had even Corvette expert Peters scratching his head. It featured the radical wheel flares, a rear diff-cooler, contoured clear lenses covering fixed headlamps, and an extreme big-block clearance hood of a Grand Sport, but also this six-lamp rear treatment. And it’s black, not blue and/or white. Alas, you’re likely to see anything on Woodward!
1971 Camaro Z28 RS
“When that generation of Camaro first came out, I didn’t like it,” Tom said. “But over the years, it’s grown on me. Now I really like its almost Ferrari-like lines.” We agree wholeheartedly, and a Z28 with the split bumper and Endura nose would be exactly the one we’d seek out.
1971 Ford Torino GT
As we passed this hidden-headlamp, pointy-nosed Torino, we all agreed that its design, which was inspired by the Jaguar Pirana concept (which led directly to the Lamborghini Espada four-seater), was one of the higher points of Ford styling in its time.
1951 Chevrolet De Luxe convertible
See, matte black isn’t just for murdered-out race cars and bucks-up supercars—it can also make “shoebox” cars with chrome and wide whites look totally cool!
1968 Dodge Super Bee
As we were turning off the Avenue at the end of the evening, Tom spotted a ’68 Dodge. “Man, look at that Super Bee,” he said. “There are some beautiful shapes on that car. It’s one of my favorite non-GM cars.” Like father, like daughter. Adrienne said almost the exact same thing, adding her appreciation for classic, expressive Mopar.

The Ultimate List of American Muscle Cars
