Hibernating
Hello, interweb pals. I've been lazy, but I've also been avoiding sending my thoughts out into the world. They are not happy thoughts and why on Earth would I want to add to the mountain of bad news and daily drama that we're all drowning in at the moment? Although the orange menace is actively attempting to destroy all that is good and kind, I'm not here to make things worse. So let's take a little trip into the Land of Denial and pretend that everything is fine.
I'll fill you in on what's shaking around the Pullen house. Well, not much, actually. The days tend to all run together and I try to stay busy in my craft room making everything from greeting cards to mosaic birdhouses - it keeps me sane. These are the cards currently in progress. I still need to clean them up a bit and embellish them, I usually just add buttons.

The first birdhouse is already sitting on the front porch. The winter porch is so blah, doesn't hurt to have a little something bright out there.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/df16225984567c853f1f24ef0e876429/e747fdaae8e7a7b4-0f/s540x810/a9b78fe2a8bc109f3c4d7f4f3d39f4afa61d9c84.jpg)
That's just a cheap, unfinished wood birdhouse from Michael's. I think it was $6. Some broken china from Goodwill, a little paint and grout, and our birds have the fanciest digs in town. Also, my hands were busy so I didn't kill anyone that week. Speaking of my poor hands. I've been picking up vases and candleholders at Goodwill, painting them, then covering them in shattered glass. I think mentioned this a couple of months ago. We made them with my sweet grandma when we were kids and she called them GloomChasers. When you put a candle inside it casts the colored light on your walls and chases away the gloom. I looked everywhere in the internet to find a method for making them,no luck. It seemed so easy when we did it with Grandma. I remembered (maybe incorrectly?) that the glass was already colored. My sister said she remembered painting each individual piece of glass. The truth is probably somewhere in between. Anyyywayyy, my darling husband purchased a sheet of tempered glass, we wrapped it up and gave it a good whack to shatter it and I made trial run with a goldfish bowl. It was okay, and I learned from my mistakes. Kind of.

I've been practicing because I have a big box of broken glass to use, and now I've got stuff like this sitting and drying all over my craft room (waiting for grout).
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/ee90f73f16e0d434d11182dbf2e6a76c/e747fdaae8e7a7b4-23/s540x810/c0cc0957621a6dcf57b6290c8854c925aa823b2f.jpg)
I've got red for next Christmas, blue just because I had blue paint, another is painted in a rainbow of colors...and I've jabbed my fingers so many times with glass that I doubt I have fingerprints anymore. If I ever go missing and detective sprays my craft room with luminol they'll arrest Mickey for murder. I don't remember bloody fingers when I was a kid, so I'm doing something terribly wrong, but it's a very zen activity and fun to do while I listen to a podcast. Last, but certainly not least, we took a little trip out of town. Originally we'd planned to escape all of the inaugural hoopty-do, but a blizzard canceled those plans. We pushed our plans back a few days and then headed north(west). We crossed the icy Chesapeake Bay...
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/b8b69cbe753aeb8d38e96f2fdc4e3c32/e747fdaae8e7a7b4-e7/s540x810/01a3156ee8bd508fc8c110f6141782d27060c2d7.jpg)
and pointed the car toward Hagerstown.

The drive was uneventful, and I was delighted to find our hotel was right next door to a mall. Here in Dogpatch I am deprived of my favorite pastime - browsing. To say that our shopping selections are sparse is an enormous understatement. I was so excited to see a BELK that I might have yelped. It was a big one, too.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/5a13834da870d86e6f122da391d38bc2/e747fdaae8e7a7b4-76/s540x810/04787e081e68aadc1d43641be7d0a95259ff24d0.jpg)
I didn't buy a single thing in there, but I sure loved looking. There's a polka dot blouse that I can't stop thinking about, but where would I wear it...Aldi?? I think I touched everything in the store - shoes, cosmetics, clothing, purses, Christmas decor clearance (80% off!!!). It was wonderful. I actually did make some purchases while we were in Hagerstown - I found a Hallmark store and bought three boxes of Xmas cards that were 80% off. Three boxes for $7.95 total! For several years I've designed our cards and had them printed, but I don't think anyone really cares. They all end up in the trash, so $7.95 feels smarter. We also paid a visit to a JoAnn Fabrics store (imagine Mickeys' delight) because that's where I used to buy my paper supplies for making cards. They always have the best selection and best prices. Haven't been able to visit one in ages. You guys, I went to the one in Hagerstown twice. I mean, the paper was on sale and who knows when I'll get to shop at JoAnn's again. Rumor has it they're going out of business- I hope not.
I made one other purchase on our little trip. A book. Just a paperback, but it was signed by the author. Nora Roberts has an inn in Boonsboro, Maryland - and she once wrote a trilogy with that inn as the setting. It had everything - romance, heartache, humor, a ghost. I've read a ton of her books over the years, she also writes under the name JD Robb. I remember a series that took place on thoroughbred farms in Kentucky (that really fed into my love of the Kentucky Derby). She's written well over 200 romance novels, and perhaps as many suspense novels under the JD Robb moniker. I'm rambling - I should just say we went to Boonsboro and found the inn right on Main Street.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/d032169de6e9c21ad2f0b1a35cd86bc2/e747fdaae8e7a7b4-52/s540x810/1434cb58c2801dd1dd3a290e40d972771e7b1593.jpg)
The gorgeous suites are all named for literary couples, Elizabeth and Darcy, Nick and Nora, Titania and Oberon, Jane and Rochester - you get the idea. Right across the street from the inn you'll find her husband's shop, Turn the Page Book Store. Next to that is the inn's gift shop featuring all sorts of gorgeous creations from local artisans. Her sons own a few restaurants in town, a couple of them on Main Street. Her family is keeping this little mountain town alive and employed. People come to see the inn and buy a book, they stay for coffee and a meal. Nora Roberts was once asked why she lived in Washington County, Maryland when she could live anywhere in the world. She replied that Boonsboro is home, that she raised her sons there, wrote her first book there, found love again there, and loves it. She's worth about $400 million and lives in the same rambler house she raised her children in, though she has added a gym and an enormous closet. ha! Here's a great article from a few years back: https://www.jezebel.com/welcome-to-noraville-the-small-maryland-town-rebuilt-b-1832961839 Her foundation has poured millions into the town and the state, so I didn't hesitate to drop a few dollars at the bookstore. I know it will be used well. Imagine my surprise while I was browsing when I realized she was right behind me!
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/a8716b96b9a6f73a47392c1c23c71a02/e747fdaae8e7a7b4-83/s540x810/857e66230b8977c29131e030cc5cc9e6b2e579ff.jpg)
Can't tell you how relieved I was to be out of focus in that shot. Wrinkles, two-toned hair with static electricity reaching for the ceiling - I really had it goin' on that day. Look away, look at Nora! Pretend she was really there and we had a long conversation and became BFFs. *sigh* Anywho, we had a grand time running around the region - and we hardly scraped the surface. There's so much history there, we did pay a visit to the National Park Service site at the C&O Canal. Super interesting, tons of labor and money spent and then the railroad came through before it was even finished and made it obsolete. Oops. I mean, boats pulled by mules on a tow path might not have been the best plan anyway, but the river was otherwise not really navigable, so the canal seemed like a grand idea. I'll bet they didn't ask a single woman for input. Just sayin'. That's about it from the Pullen Patch. Very little to share, just trying to survive with my heart and mind intact. The future looks rather grim, so it's important to find happiness where we can. Too often for me that's in a cookie jar or an online boutique - two habits I'm trying to break. Tomorrow will be a wonderful day because my sister is coming. We both really like a hair stylist in Easton so we've booked appointments for tomorrow and she's driving in. Isn't that an awful thing to do to that poor stylist? Two heads of hair like ours in one day, one after the other? I feel like I should take her a gift, or at the very least apologize. I haven't had a haircut since I had it chopped short in August. Then I made the mistake of coloring it mid-October before we went to France. It's a mess. I'm not sure what I want her to do with it, but I can't keep walking around like this.
I feel so dated. But I don't like short hair with my mug. Help! I swear, I'll go to my grave wondering what to do with the mop on my head. I really regret coloring it and now having to grow out all that white hair again. Ugh. Oh well, I guess we'll see what happens tomorrow. If nothing else I know my sister and I can laugh about it. Then we'll drown our sorrows in a bowl of crab soup. That's a win. Okay, I've blathered enough. What a bunch of nonsense. If you're still here, thank you. Give yourself a cookie. Hopefully something blogworthy will happen soon - we have a very special family member who has a 7th birthday coming up, that'll be fun! She's having a party at a trampoline park. I don't see Grancy participating in that. The next blog post would be about how I broke my hip and got carted out of a birthday party by EMTs. No thanks. I hope that you're doing well and finding tidbits of joy where you can. Don't let the bastards grind you down. Joy is resistance, happiness is powerful. Stay well, stay safe. XOXO, Nancy

top 3 candles ive ever owned. For the curious.
1. Blue cedar fig (chesapeake bay) (TWO SEPARATE PEOPLE HAVE STOLEN THIS CANDLE FROM ME. i have never gotten to the bottom of one of these but ive had three over the years and light it fairly frequently)
2. Catwoman themed candle from gamestop. Clove and incense is the description. Gamestop also sold a harley quinn vanilla pudding candle that I will forever be obsessed with.
3. Sandalwood vanilla but a very specific brand I stole from target that I can't remember the name of but im always thinking about it
#the catwoman candle reminds me of qrow. if it means anything. i need a qrow themed candle so bad but i dont trust others opinions#.ares

Typical Tuesday
Life moves at a snail’s pace here but so do I. I used to be such a bouncy, bright gal until my ankles and feet decided to turn on me. Now everything hurts and cracks, and scoffs at me when I say, “Hey we should dance!” Boy, I miss dancing. I still shimmy around the kitchen when I cook, but sustained dancing for an hour or so seems like a big ask. Poor, poor me.
I’m only thinking about that because I just tried making an appointment with an orthopedic doctor for a weird thing that’s causing pain in my left ankle, formerly known as my “good ankle”. I was on hold for about ten minutes, went through the new patient song and dance with a very friendly young woman, gave all of my pertinent info, and then she said, “Okay, just as soon as your former doctor sends your medical records someone will call you to schedule an appointment.” Well, crap. I replied, “I’m going to go out on a limb and guess that you will not request those records.” She confirmed that, said I’d have to get them to fax the records, and hopefully everyone would do their part and I can see a doctor before my foot falls off. Immediately after ending that call I placed a call to my doctor in Tennessee and said I needed my records to be faxed up here. That not-so-nice lady said that would require an official form from the doctor’s office in Maryland, and blah blah blah. I explained that they told me I had to make the request and maybe I get the form from them, or perhaps it could be emailed to me, or could I possibly find it on their (TN) website. I was battering her with all of the ways I might be able to get my hands on the form and get this done today, when she finally sighed and said, “Look just email me giving your permission to release the records and put your name and date of birth in the email.” Now, was that so hard? I thanked her profusely and sent the email fifteen seconds after we hung up. Who thinks that this will all go smoothly and I’ll get a call this week? I’d say those odds are slim. I hope I’m wrong, but I’ll bet I have to request the records at least once more and won’t see a doctor before September. Ugh. But that’s not why I’m here. I’m here because I don’t post enough and I’m trying to make myself show up. It would help if I had something to actually write about but you’ll just have to bear with me. If I show up every day maybe my muse will show up too. Cross your fingers, light a candle, rub some beads.
Today started the way our days it always start. The mister gets up early and goes out for a long walk. He likes to show off his healthy feet. He listens to audiobooks and watches the town wake up. While he’s doing that I play word games on my phone (Wordle, Spelling Bee, Letter Boxed, Connections, etc). Then I have long conversations with the cats, eventually get up and make the bed, and ease into my day. We’re very different people. For example, he’s been watching Wimbledon and he caught me tuned into the Hallmark channel’s Christmas in July.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/a990de7d915b97ed23494c00ed9af8cc/055fb06f72af1963-75/s540x810/a4994de47ae115c7df39f3462579a2c1e9a8e7aa.jpg)
Don’t judge me. The world is on fire, I needed a dose of predictable sweetness with a happy ending. Speaking of sweetness, on Sunday we drove over to spend an afternoon with the Edgewater gang. Everyone is getting ready to scatter on different trips, so we wanted to hug them before that happened. Little Miss was as entertaining and fun as always. We were treated to a mermaid water show in her pool, I played Barbies with her for a little while, and then she belly laughed while driving her cats bonkers with a laser pointer. It was a full afternoon. A big storm blew in and dumped tons of rain that same afternoon. We made our exit when there was a break in the radar and raced the rain home. As we started across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge I saw these big freighters lined up to head into port, and those ominous clouds hovering above them. Yikes.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/df536696ce880e68c1c3a2deeb5344d5/055fb06f72af1963-1d/s540x810/649271336d62c6d376065644cc03cd65203af480.jpg)
That was snapped from a moving car so the quality isn’t great, but...anyone else notice there’s a chunk of the bridge missing? I didn’t notice it when I took the picture, I was too busy looking at those ships. Doesn’t look big enough to alter the integrity of the structure, but what the heck happened there? Someone had a bad day.
On a happier note, I’ve got one sunflower fully opened and several nearly there. Aren’t they cheerful? I just love ‘em.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/52c8850ae970c5e2e54f26904441aeb6/055fb06f72af1963-78/s540x810/e8e4519b926b4cf6bdfbb68f29e495af1c0dd760.jpg)
Other things that give me pleasure are clean windows (how’s that for a segue?). My sister turned me on to this fabulous spray cleaner.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/3a6704fd3fb7c77002c6804c01e8d085/055fb06f72af1963-29/s540x810/7023845bc0feacc3f3f1a8eb1cb13a7b29e5e602.jpg)
It’s amazing. Even better, it smells wonderful and it’s just $2.50! I picked up my can at Walmart, I’m sure it’s sold elsewhere. Anyway, it’s cheap, it leaves windows sparkling and streak-free, and the fragrance smells just like the lobby of the fancy-schmancy Grosvenor House Hotel in London. No lie. When we stayed there like the Clampetts a few years back it was one of the best parts of the stay - walking into that lobby and being enveloped in the fragrance. I didn’t know if it was all of the fresh flowers, some special spray they used, or if that’s what loads of money smells like. Whatever it was, you can have it in your home for $2.50. I’m a fan. I’m not a fan of my hair. I mean, that’s not exactly news. It’s been an on-going battle since kindergarten. I’ve let it grow again, it’s long again, and I look stuck in the 70′s. My hair behaves a little better when it’s long, the weight is like a Thunder Shirt. But I don’t think the length is a friend to my face, I know the style isn’t. To be fair, I go through this every year during July and August. The height of summer heat and humidity always makes me want to shave my head. I was zipping along just fine in June, it wasn’t even hot. Right around the 4th of July the sticky heat arrived and my hair lost its dang mind. I’m walking around looking like this.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/1681394d4aae76e604cebbd18fb631f4/055fb06f72af1963-93/s540x810/8f564b0c7ce2c5af46cef378231c185020674c83.jpg)
So I’m spending lots of time on Pinterest looking at short haircuts. I’m going to do it it’s just a matter of choosing a style (which won’t work), a place (good luck with that), and screwing up my courage. We all know this will be a disaster. It always is. I don’t think I’ve even once walked into a salon and walked out feeling better. It’s a generational curse. But it’s been quite a while since I tempted fate, and I’m feeing so ugly lately anyway, might as well. Best case scenario, I end up with a cute, fresh style that I like.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/044430cbf05aa40171723f2d9f8013c1/055fb06f72af1963-51/s540x810/fffff662c410de0b8116159840712847186dbf3f.jpg)
Worst case scenario, I look like Mrs. Claus.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/95a0d08e99e6f1bfedd1e6e18d4a9bb1/055fb06f72af1963-e8/s540x810/7e605d0e6653326c61f09923a8b7ca5492255552.jpg)
It’s a safe bet that I have more Mrs. Claus tendencies than I do Helen Mirren tendencies. Darn. If nothing else maybe it’s just time for a change. Will I miss the ease of a ponytail or a big hair clip? Yep. Will I miss this same, old, tired hairstyle? Nope. Well, maybe. There’s always comfort in what we know vs the unknown. Finding a place is daunting. I called the Ulta salon in Easton thinking that if the haircut sucked then at least I’d be inside Ulta and I could treat myself to a new lipstick or something. They only have two stylists and a haircut and blowdry is $70. I will start up the weedeater and let it cut my hair before I pay $70. I don’t want to go to the salon that I visited in Denton, the owner cut my hair and she was delightful, but the haircut was not. There are plenty of others in the area, mostly pricey, so I may just have to throw a dart and pick a place. Or I could spend the rest of my life in a ponytail. Back to Pinterest...
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/5de0425d8695898f61b3e1b9014a9173/055fb06f72af1963-da/s540x810/c6c8f7fe345c208645104d3f81a91de27eb65b93.jpg)
Raise your hand if you’re tired of hearing me talk about my hair.
Told you I didn’t have anything to write about, pretty sure the glass cleaner was the high point of this post. I think I’ll head upstairs and soak in a bubble bath and lose myself in a book - a book where the main character has perfect hair. I hope that your week has been a delight so far. I hope that you have had at least one good laugh and at least two moments of pure pleasure. If not, hey, it’s only Tuesday! There’s plenty of time. Sending out loads of love tonight. Stay safe, stay well. XOXO, Nancy

Image 1: BetterHealth - This pamphlet is a promotion for BetterHealth Market. The typography is emphasized more than visuals of the products. This is seen through the size and contrast of colors with the 5 day sale being the main marketing strategy to get people to go into the stores.
Image 2: Hand Soap - Lacura’s hand soap utilizes a green color background and white typography along with one image of an aloe plant to market their hand soap. There is adequate white space to not distract the user from the product.
Image 3: XA Sticker - The XA sticker consists of the MSU logo along with the letters XA to represent the Experience Architecture program. The minimal design is intended to intrigue the eye from further distances.
Image 4: Floss - This floss pack uses bright colors, large shapes, images, and typography to stand out from competitors.
Image 5: Candle - Chesapeake Bay’s candle utilizes a logo, minimal colors, and all typography to brand their candle. The small size of text coupled with the white space around the product represents the simplicity of the product itself.
The pictures above are what I think graphic design is. As discussed from the readings graphic design and culture are intertwined. We can see this with the endless need for graphic designers to create product branding and marketing for corporations.

Snuggly Sweater, a candle scent produced by the Chesapeake Bay Candle Company in 2021. My wife and I'd just started dating and she found it in a store because it smelled like me. When I found and sniffed one for myself, it smelled odourless.
what’s your signature scent? (favorite cologne or perfume)
