Or perhaps it was the mere fact that her mother had been training for her this moment since before she could remember, that it became second nature.

Admittedly, she finds the grandeur and spectacle of these gatherings somewhat daunting, preferring the solace of quieter moments away from the spotlight. The superficiality of the marriage market, where debutantes are often paraded as eligible bachelorettes, doesn't quite align with Lucy's more introspective nature.

Angela was perplexed. Lucy had been acting strangely lately, and Angela couldn't quite put her finger on why. Lucy's behavior had taken a turn for the overly sweet and considerate. She was constantly offering to buy Angela lunch, showering her with compliments, and going out of her way to be helpful. While Angela certainly appreciated the kindness, it felt out of character for Lucy. It wasn't like her to be so excessively nice without a clear reason. She was an extremely nice person, however, this was a whole new level.

Angela wondered if Lucy's sudden attentiveness had something to do with her upcoming detective's exam. Maybe Lucy was trying to curry favor or seeking some sort of reassurance. Whatever the reason, it left Angela feeling uneasy and more than a little confused.

Angela approached Nyla's desk, her brow furrowed with concern. She leaned in slightly, lowering her voice to ensure their conversation remained private.

"Nyla, can I ask you something?" Angela began, her tone hesitant.

Finding a respite in the library, Lucy opened the door and stepped inside. The room was dimly lit by the soft glow of lamps and the flickering light of candles, creating a serene and intimate atmosphere. She felt a sense of relief as the hustle and bustle of the ballroom faded away.

To her surprise, she found Angela seated by the fireplace, a book resting on her lap. Angela looked up, her expression shifting from shock to a familiar, teasing smile. “Well, well, if it isn’t the blushing bride herself. I didn’t expect to see you sneaking away like this.”

Lucy’s lips curved into a playful grin. “And I didn’t expect to find you here, hiding from the festivities.”

Angela’s eyes met his, a mixture of desperation and guilt swirling in their depths. “I know. But I need to talk to you.”

Tim sighed, the weight of her words settling heavily on his shoulders. This was the last thing he wanted to deal with right now, especially after everything between them. "Go to my house," he said, his tone resigned. "I'll meet you there."

Angela nodded, a faint expression of relief crossing her face. “Thank you, Tim.”

She took another deep breath, her voice trembling slightly. "It... it's not a guy, Tim. It's a woman."

Tim's eyes widened slightly in surprise, but he remained calm. "Do I know her?" he asked, his voice soft and encouraging.

Lucy nodded, still unable to meet his gaze. "Yes, you know her. We're extremely close. That's part of why it's so confusing. I don't know if these feelings are real or if it's just because I've been feeling lonely."

Tim took a moment to process her words, then reached across the table and placed his hand over hers. "Lucy, it's okay to feel confused. Emotions can be really complicated, especially when it comes to someone you're close to. But whatever you're feeling, it's valid."
